Abstract

Understanding nanoscale mechanisms responsible for the recently discovered ferroelectric nematics can be helped by direct visualization of self-assembly of strongly polar molecules. Here we report on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of monomolecular layers of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal on a reconstructed Au(111) surface. The monolayers are obtained by deposition from a solution at ambient conditions. The adsorbed ferroelectric nematic molecules self-assemble into regular rows with tilted orientation, resembling a layered structure of a smectic C. Remarkably, each molecular dipole in this architecture is oriented along the same direction giving rise to polar ferroelectric ordering., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Propelling single molecules in a controlled manner along an unmodified surface remains extremely challenging because it requires molecules that can use light, chemical or electrical energy to modulate their interaction with the surface in a way that generates motion. Nature's motor proteins (1,2) have mastered the art of converting conformational changes into directed motion, and have inspired the design of artificial systems (3) such as DNA walkers (4,5) and light- and redox-driven molecular motors (6-11). But although controlled movement of single molecules along a surface has been reported (12-16), the molecules in these examples act as passive elements that either diffuse along a preferential direction with equal probability for forward and backward movement or are dragged by an STM tip. Here we present a molecule with four functional units-our previously reported rotary motors (6,8,17) -that undergo continuous and defined conformational changes upon sequential electronic and vibrational excitation. Scanning tunnelling microscopy confirms that activation of the conformational changes of the rotors through inelastic electron tunnelling propels the molecule unidirectionally across a Cu(111) surface. The system can be adapted to follow either linear or random surface trajectories or to remain stationary, by tuning the chirality of the individual motor units. Abstract

The analysis has extended the study of Schiff base polymorphism to the molecular level by using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy at the liquid/solid interface and molecular modeling. The results have shown that the dimer-based structure seen on Au(111) has originated from molecule/surface interactions, which in turn has modified molecule/molecule interactions, and the Au(111) substrate has played a vital role in the morphology of 2D polymorphs.

Abstract

Here, we report a superstructure of self-assembled chiral nematic microspheres of well-defined size that can distribute incoming light in any direction, while displaying high selectivity for the color and chi-rality of the incoming light. The cross-communication between the droplets can be tuned, both gradually in wavelength and reversibly in polarization.1 Monodisperse droplets are produced using a microfluidic device, and this monodispersity promotes the self-assembly of the droplets into hexagonal superstruc-tures, where they communicate optically with high selectivity for the color and chirality of light.

The mechanism of the photoinduced rotational reorganization of semifree cholesteric liquid crystal films is examined. The photochemical process is used for the controlling of the rotational reorganization via the coupling between the chirality of the dopant and the elastic properties of the liquid crystal host.

Chiral domains are formed at liquid/solid interface by achiral diarylethenes due to surface-induced atropoisomerism. Molecular dynamics have shown that these dimers of diarylethenes are chiral dimers, rather than prochiral dimers.

Abstract

The structure of molecular monolayers formed at the interface between atomically flat surfaces and a solution of free-base meso-tetradodecylporphyrins ([H.sub.2]Ps) is analyzed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the liquid/solid interface. On the surface of graphite (HOPG), ([H.sub.2]Ps) form a well-ordered monolayer characterized by an oblique unit cell, while on Au(111), ([H.sub.2]Ps) form a self-organized monolayer consisting of two distinct domain types in which the density of the porphyrin cores is increased in comparison to the arrangement observed on HOPG.
