We report on robust measurements of elemental abundances of the Type IIn supernova SN 1978K, based on the high-resolution X-ray spectrum obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The RGS clearly resolves a number of emission lines, including N Ly$\alpha$, O Ly$\alpha$, O Ly$\beta$, Fe XVII, Fe XVIII, Ne He$\alpha$ and Ne Ly$\alpha$ for the first time from SN 1978K. The X-ray spectrum can be represented by an absorbed, two-temperature thermal emission model, with temperatures of $kT \sim 0.6$ keV and $2.7$ keV. The elemental abundances are obtained to be N $=$ $2.36_{-0.80}^{+0.88}$, O $=$ $0.20 \pm{0.05}$, Ne $=$ $0.47 \pm{0.12}$, Fe $=$ $0.15_{-0.02}^{+0.01}$ times the solar values. The low metal abundances except for N show that the X-ray emitting plasma originates from the circumstellar medium blown by the progenitor star. The abundances of N and O are far from CNO-equilibrium abundances expected for the surface composition of a luminous blue variable, and resemble the H-rich envelope of less-massive stars with masses of 10-25 M$_\odot$. Together with other peculiar properties of SN 1978K, i.e., a low expansion velocity of 500-1000 km s$^{-1}$ and SN IIn-like optical spectra, we propose that SN 1978K is a result of either an electron-capture SN from a super asymptotic giant branch star, or a weak Fe core-collapse explosion of a relatively low-mass ($\sim$10 M$_\odot$) or high-mass ($\sim$20-25 M$_\odot$) red supergiant star. However, these scenarios can not naturally explain the high mass-loss rate of the order of $\dot{M} \sim 10^{-3} \rm{M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$ over $\gtrsim$1000 yr before the explosion, which is inferred by this work as well as many other earlier studies. Further theoretical studies are required to explain the high mass-loss rates at the final evolutionary stages of massive stars., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Charge exchange (CX) is an important process in shock physics since it indicates an interaction between downstream ions and ambient neutral hydrogen, suggesting a presence of a collisionless shock. We present a high-resolution spectroscopy of an X-ray bright spot in a nearby supernova remnant (SNR), the Cygnus Loop, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The target is a compact knotty structure called "southwestern knot (SW-K)" located at the outer edge of the shell, where the blast wave is likely interacting with dense surrounding materials. The RGS spectrum of the SW-K shows details of the line features below ~ 1 keV, where we discover a high forbidden-to-resonance line ratio of OVII He$\alpha$. The soft-band (10-35 \AA) spectrum is well explained by a thermal component with a CX X-ray emission obscured by neutral and ionized absorbers. The presence of the CX X-ray emission will provide new insights into the shock physics of SNRs. The high-resolution spectroscopy also reveals that the CNO, Ne and Fe abundances are truly lower than the solar values (0.2-0.4 solar) at the SW-K region . Our result gives a clue to solving the previously known "low-abundance problem" reported from a number of evolved SNRs., Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an interpretation of the time variability of the $X$-ray flux recently reported from a multi-epoch campaign of $15$ years observations of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A by {\it Chandra}. We show for the first time quantitatively that the $[4.2-6]$ keV non-thermal flux increase up to $50\%$ traces the growth of the magnetic field due to vortical amplification mechanism at a reflection inward shock colliding with inner overdensities. The fast synchrotron cooling as compared with shock-acceleration time scale qualitatively supports the flux decrease., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, PRL in press

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The hard X-ray detector (HXD) onboard {\it Suzaku} measured soft $\gamma$-rays from the Type Ia supernova SN2014J at $77\pm2$ days after the explosion. Although the confidence level of the signal is about 90\% (i.e., $2 \sigma$), the $3 \sigma$ upper limit has been derived at $< 2.2 \times10^{-4}$ ph s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 170 -- 250 keV band as the first independent measurement of soft $\gamma$-rays with an instrument other than {\it INTEGRAL}. For this analysis, we have examined the reproducibility of the NXB model of HXD/GSO using blank sky data. We find that the residual count rate in the 90 -- 500 keV band is distributed around an average of 0.19\% with a standard deviation of 0.42\% relative to the NXB rate. The averaged residual signals are consistent with that expected from the cosmic X-ray background. The flux of SN2014J derived from {\it Suzaku} measurements taken in one snapshot at $t=77\pm2$ days after the explosion is consistent with the {\it INTEGRAL} values averaged over the period between $t=$50 and 100 days and also with explosion models of single or double degenerate scenarios. Being sensitive to the total ejecta mass surrounding the radioactive material, the ratio between continuum and line flux in the soft gamma-ray regime might distinguish different progenitor models. The {\it Suzaku} data have been examined with this relation at $t=77\pm2$ days, but could not distinguish models between single and double degenerate-progenitors. We disfavor explosion models with larger $^{56}$Ni masses than 1 $M_\odot$, from our $1 \sigma$ error on the 170-250 keV X-ray flux of $(1.2\pm0.7) \times10^{-4}$ ph s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We report on a second epoch of Chandra X-ray imaging spectroscopy of the spatially-resolved old nova remnant GK Persei. An ACIS-S3 observation of 97.4 ks was conducted in November 2013 after a lapse of 13.8 years from the last visit in 2000. The X-ray emitting nebula appeared more faint and patchy compared with the first epoch. The flux decline was particularly evident in fainter regions and the mean decline was 30-40 % in the 0.5-1.2 keV energy band. A typical expansion of the brightest part of the remnant was 1.9 arcsec, which corresponds to an expansion rate of 0.14 arcsec yr^{-1}. The soft X-ray spectra extracted from both the 2000 and 2013 data can be explained by a non-equilibrium ionization collisional plasma model convolved with interstellar absorption, though do not allow us to constrain the origin of the flux evolution. The plasma temperature has not significantly evolved since the 2000 epoch and we conclude that the fading of the X-ray emission is due largely to expansion. This implies that recent expansion has been into a lower density medium, a scenario that is qualitatively consistent with the structure of the circumstellar environment photographed soon after the initial explosion more than a century ago. Fainter areas are fading more quickly than brighter areas, indicating that they are fainter because of a lower ambient medium density and consequently more rapid expansion., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal; 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

This white paper addresses selected new (to X-ray astronomy) physics and data analysis issues that will impact ASTRO-H SWG observations as a result of its high-spectral-resolution X-ray microcalorimeter, the focussing hard X-ray optics and corresponding detectors, and the low background soft gamma-ray detector. We concentrate on issues of atomic and nuclear physics, including basic bound-bound and bound-free transitions as well as scattering and radiative transfer. The major topic categories include the physics of charge exchange, solar system X-ray sources, advanced spectral model, radiative transfer, and hard X-ray emission lines and sources., Comment: 37 pages, 19 figures, ASTRO-H White Paper

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Most supernova remnants (SNRs) are old, in the sense that their structure has been profoundly modified by their interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Old SNRs are very heterogenous in terms of their appearance, reflecting differences in their evolutionary state, the environments in which SNe explode and in the explosion products. Some old SNRs are seen primarily as a result of a strong shock wave interacting with the ISM. Others, the so-called mixed-morphology SNRs, show central concentrations of emission, which may still show evidence of emission from the ejecta. Yet others, the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), are seen primarily as a result of emission powered by a pulsar; these SNRs often lack the detectable thermal emission from the primary shock. The underlying goal in all studies of old SNRs is to understand these differences, in terms of the SNe that created them, the nature of the ISM into which they are expanding, and the fundamental physical processes that govern their evolution. Here we identify three areas of study where ASTRO-H can make important contributions. These are constraining abundances and physical processes in mature limb-brightened SNRs, understanding the puzzling nature of mixed-morphology SNRs, and exploring the nature of PWNe. The Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on-board ASTRO-H will, as a result of its high spectral resolution, be the primary tool for addressing problems associated with old SNRs, supported by hard X-ray observations with the Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) to obtain broad band X-ray coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, ASTRO-H White Paper

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Thanks to the unprecedented spectral resolution and sensitivity of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) to soft thermal X-ray emission, ASTRO-H will open a new discovery window for understanding young, ejecta-dominated, supernova remnants (SNRs). In particular we study how ASTRO-H observations will address, comprehensively, three key topics in SNR research: (1) using abundance measurements to unveil SNR progenitors, (2) using spatial and velocity distribution of the ejecta to understand supernova explosion mechanisms, (3) revealing the link between the thermal plasma state of SNRs and the efficiency of their particle acceleration., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures, ASTRO-H White Paper

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
We observed the Cygnus Loop with XMM-Newton (9 pointings) and Suzaku (32 pointings) between 2002 and 2008. The total effective exposure time is 670.2 ks. By using all of the available data, we intended to improve a signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum. Accordingly, the accumulated spectra obtained by the XIS and the EPIC show some line features around 3 keV that are attributed to the S He$\beta$ and Ar He$\alpha$ lines, respectively. Since the Cygnus Loop is an evolved ($\sim$10,000 yr) supernova remnant whose temperature is relatively low ($<$1 keV) compared with other young remnants, its spectrum is generally faint above 3.0 keV, no emission lines, such as the Ar-K line have ever been detected. The detection of the Ar-K line is the first time and we found that its abundance is significantly higher than that of the solar value; 9.0$^{+4.0}_{-3.8}$ and 8.4$^{+2.5}_{-2.7}$ (in units of solar), estimated from the XIS and the EPIC spectra, respectively. We conclude that the Ar-K line originated from the ejecta of the Cygnus Loop. Follow-up X-ray observations to tightly constrain the abundances of Ar-rich ejecta will be useful to accurately estimate the progenitor's mass., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report on the discovery of fast-moving X-ray--emitting ejecta knots in the Galactic Oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A from XMM-Newton observations. We find an X-ray knotty feature positionally coincident with an O-rich fast-moving optical filament with blue-shifted line emission located in the northeast of Puppis A. We extract spectra from northern and southern regions of the feature. Applying a one-component non-equilibrium ionization model for the two spectra, we find high metal abundances relative to the solar values in both spectra. This fact clearly shows that the feature originates from metal-rich ejecta. In addition, we find that line emission in the two regions is blue-shifted. The Doppler velocities derived in the two regions are different with each other, suggesting that the knotty feature consists of two knots that are close to each other along the line of sight. Since fast-moving O-rich optical knots/filaments are believed to be recoiled metal-rich ejecta, expelled to the opposite direction against the high-velocity central compact object, we propose that the ejecta knots disclosed here are also part of the recoiled material., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
The detection of radioactive decay line of 44Ti provides a unique evidence that the gamma-ray source is a young (< 1,000 yr) supernova remnant because of its short lifetime of about 90 yr. Only two Galactic remnants, Cassiopeia A and RX J0852.0-4622, are hitherto reported to be the 44Ti line emitter, although the detection from the latter has been debated. Here we report on an expansion measurement of the northwestern rim of RX J0852.0-4622 obtained with X-ray observations separated by 6.5 yr. The expansion rate is derived to be 0.023+/-0.006% that is about five times lower than those of young historical remnants. Such a slow expansion suggests that RX J0852.0-4622 is not a young remnant as has been expected. We estimate the age of 1,700-4,300 yr of this remnant depending on its evolutionary stage. Assuming a high shock speed of about 3000 km/sec, which is suggested by the detection of non-thermal X-ray radiation, the distance of about 750 pc to this remnant is also derived., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the results of a spatially resolved spectral analysis from four Suzaku observations covering the northeastern rim of the Cygnus Loop. A two-kT_e non-ionization equilibrium (NEI) model fairly well represents our data, which confirms the NEI condition of the plasma there. The metal abundances are depleted relative to the solar values almost everywhere in our field of view. We find abundance inhomogeneities across the field: the northernmost region (Region A) has enhanced absolute abundances compared with other regions. In addition, the relative abundances of Mg/O and Fe/O in Region A are lower than the solar values, while those in the other regions are twice higher than the solar values. As far as we are concerned, neither a circumstellar medium, fragments of ejecta, nor abundance inhomogeneities of the local interstellar medium around the Cygnus Loop can explain the relatively enhanced abundance in Region A. This point is left as an open question for future work., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
We observed a linearly sliced area of the Cygnus Loop from the north-east to the south-west with Suzaku in seven pointings. After dividing the entire fields of view (FOV) into 119 cells, we extracted spectra from all of the cells and performed spectral analysis for them. We then applied both one- and two-component non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) models for all of the spectra, finding that almost all were significantly better fitted by the two-component NEI model rather than the one-component NEI model. Judging from the abundances, the high-kT_e component must be the ejecta component, while the low-kT_e component comes from the swept-up matter. Therefore, the ejecta turn out to be distributed inside a large area (at least our FOV) of the Cygnus Loop. We divided the entire FOV into northern and southern parts, and found that the ejecta distributions were asymmetric to the geometric center: the ejecta of Si, S, and Fe seem to be distributed more in the south than in the north of the Cygnus Loop by a factor of about 2. The degree of ejecta-asymmetry is consistent with that expected by recent supernova explosion models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
A charge injection technique is applied to the X-ray CCD camera, XIS (X-ray Imaging Spectrometer) onboard Suzaku. The charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) in each CCD column (vertical transfer channel) is measured by the injection of charge packets into a transfer channel and subsequent readout. This paper reports the performances of the charge injection capability based on the ground experiments using a radiation damaged device, and in-orbit measurements of the XIS. The ground experiments show that charges are stably injected with the dispersion of 91eV in FWHM in a specific column for the charges equivalent to the X-ray energy of 5.1keV. This dispersion width is significantly smaller than that of the X-ray events of 113eV (FWHM) at approximately the same energy. The amount of charge loss during transfer in a specific column, which is measured with the charge injection capability, is consistent with that measured with the calibration source. These results indicate that the charge injection technique can accurately measure column-dependent charge losses rather than the calibration sources. The column-to-column CTI correction to the calibration source spectra significantly reduces the line widths compared to those with a column-averaged CTI correction (from 193eV to 173eV in FWHM on an average at the time of one year after the launch). In addition, this method significantly reduces the low energy tail in the line profile of the calibration source spectrum., Comment: Paper contains 18 figures and 15 tables. Astrophysics - Abstract
We have developed a framework for the Monte-Carlo simulation of the X-Ray Telescopes (XRT) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) onboard Suzaku, mainly for the scientific analysis of spatially and spectroscopically complex celestial sources. A photon-by-photon instrumental simulator is built on the ANL platform, which has been successfully used in ASCA data analysis. The simulator has a modular structure, in which the XRT simulation is based on a ray-tracing library, while the XIS simulation utilizes a spectral "Redistribution Matrix File" (RMF), generated separately by other tools. Instrumental characteristics and calibration results, e.g., XRT geometry, reflectivity, mutual alignments, thermal shield transmission, build-up of the contamination on the XIS optical blocking filters (OBF), are incorporated as completely as possible. Most of this information is available in the form of the FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) files in the standard calibration database (CALDB). This simulator can also be utilized to generate an "Ancillary Response File" (ARF), which describes the XRT response and the amount of OBF contamination. The ARF is dependent on the spatial distribution of the celestial target and the photon accumulation region on the detector, as well as observing conditions such as the observation date and satellite attitude. We describe principles of the simulator and the ARF generator, and demonstrate their performance in comparison with in-flight data., Comment: 19 pages with 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ Vol 58, Suzaku special issue

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the detailed X-ray spectroscopy of Vela shrapnel A with the XMM-Newton satellite. Vela shrapnel A is one of several protrusions identified as bullets from Vela supernova explosion. The XMM-Newton image shows that shrapnel A consists of a bright knot and a faint trailing wake. We extracted spectra from various regions, finding a prominent Si Ly$_\alpha$ emission line in all the spectra. All the spectra are well represented by the non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model. The abundances are estimated to be O$\sim$0.3, Ne$\sim$0.9, Mg$\sim$0.8, Si$\sim$3, Fe$\sim$0.8 times their solar values. The non-solar abundance ratio between O and Si indicates that shrapnel A originates from a deep layer of a progenitor star. We found that the relative abundances between heavy elements are almost uniform in shrapnel A, which suggests that the ejecta from supernova explosion are well mixed with swept-up interstellar medium., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, ApJ 10 May 2006, v642 2 issue

We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. © 2021 The Author(s)., We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the following agencies and organisations: State Committee of Science of Armenia, Armenia; The Australian Research Council, Astronomy Australia Ltd, The University of Adelaide, Australian National University, Monash University, The University of New South Wales, The University of Sydney, Western Sydney University, Australia; Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, and Innsbruck University, Austria; Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq), Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP), Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), and Instituto Serrapilheira, Brasil; Ministry of Education and Science, National RI Roadmap Project DO1-153/28.08.2018, Bulgaria; The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Space Agency, Canada; CONICYT-Chile grants CATA AFB 170002, ANID PIA/APOYO AFB 180002, ACT 1406, FONDECYT-Chile grants, 1161463, 1170171, 1190886, 1171421, 1170345, 1201582, Gemini-ANID 32180007, Chile; Croatian Science Foundation, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, University of Osijek, University of Rijeka, University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Croatia; Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, MEYS LM2015046, LM2018105, LTT17006, EU/MEYS CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/16_013/0001403, CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/18_046/0016007 and CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/16_019/0000754, Czech Republic; Academy of Finland (grant nr.317636, 320045, 317383 and 320085), Finland; Ministry of Higher Education and Research, CNRS-INSU and CNRS-IN2P3, CEA-Irfu, ANR, Regional Council Ile de France, Labex ENIGMASS, OSUG2020, P2IO and OCEVU, France; Max Planck Society, BMBF, DESY, Helmholtz Association, Germany; Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science and Technology, India; Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), MIUR, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF-OABRERA) Grant Fondazione Cariplo/Regione Lombardia ID 2014-1980/RST_ERC, Italy; ICRR, University of Tokyo, JSPS, MEXT, Japan; Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), Netherlands; University of Oslo, Norway; Ministry of Science and Higher Education, DIR/WK/2017/12, the National Centre for Research and Development and the National Science Centre, UMO-2016/22/M/ST9/00583, Poland; Slovenian Research Agency, grants P1-0031, P1-0385, I0-0033, J1-9146, J1-1700, N1-0111, and the Young Researcher program, Slovenia; South African Department of Science and Technology and National Research Foundation through the South African Gamma-Ray Astronomy Programme, South Africa; The Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Spanish Research State Agency (AEI) through grants AYA2016-79724-C4-1-P, AYA2016-80889-P, AYA2016-76012-C3-1-P, BES-2016-076342, ESP2017-87055-C2-1-P, FPA2017-82729-C6-1-R, FPA2017-82729-C6-2-R, FPA2017-82729-C6-3-R, FPA2017-82729-C6-4-R, FPA2017-82729-C6-5-R, FPA2017-82729-C6-6-R, PGC2018-095161-B-I00, PGC2018-095512-B-I00; the \Centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa"program through grants no. © 2017. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E ≈ 3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of S xvi (E ≃ 3.44 keV rest-frame) - a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A confirmation of this interesting feature has to wait for a more sensitive observation with a future calorimeter experiment.

Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics::Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics ,Hitomi Collaboration ,Astrophysics::Galaxy Astrophysics - Abstract
Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and many astrophysical processes. However, knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, the mass of which is much larger than the combined mass of all the stars in the cluster, is lacking. Such knowledge would enable insights into the injection of mechanical energy by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for determining cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50-million-kelvin diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The active galactic nucleus of the central galaxy NGC 1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These bubbles probably induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas, preventing runaway radiative cooling - a process known as active galactic nucleus feedback. Here we report X-ray observations of the core of the Perseus cluster, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere in which the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164 ± 10 kilometres per second in the region 30-60 kiloparsecs from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150 ± 70 kilometres per second is found across the 60-kiloparsec image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is four per cent of the thermodynamic pressure, with large-scale shear at most doubling this estimate. We infer that a total cluster mass determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in a central region would require little correction for turbulent pressure., Please visit the publisher's website for funding information.

To study development of the aortic baroreflex mechanisms under conditions of microgravity, we carried out the various experiments in the neonate rats aged 25 days raised in microgravity for 16 days (flight: FLT group) in Neurolab program (STS-90, space shuttle Columbia, launch date: Apr 17, '98. Some results of the experiments were already reported. The results of histological examination of the aortic nerve which is the afferent of the aortic baroreflex showed that the number of unmyelinated fibers in FLT was significantly less in than those in two control groups and there was no difference between FLT and each control group in the analysis of myelin. In the present paper, the frequency distribution of axon diameters of the left aortic nerves in FLT was compared to that in two ground control groups to examine the growth of the aortic nerve fibers in space. After breeding Sprague-Dawley rats for 16 days in the shuttle in space and in the animal center in the Kennedy space center, a total of 43 deeply anesthetized rats were perfused with 1% parahormaldehyde and 1% glutaraldehyde or 4% parahormaldehyde solution buffered at pH7.4 with 0.12 M phosphate solution. Concerning the control groups, one group was the asynchronous ground control (AGC) group in which the rats were housed in the same cages as those on the shuttle, and the other was the vivarium ground control (VIV) group in which the rats were housed in commercial cages. The cervical region of the left aortic nerve which is a branch of the vagus was cut off and stored in the same fixative as that used for perfusion, and postfixed in the solution of 1% OsO4, for 2 hours within 24 hours after the perfusion. The fixed specimens were embedded in epoxy resin blocks by the usual method for electron microscopy following dehydration. Electron microscopic montages of transverse sections of these nerve trunks were made from the five left aortic nerves in each group. The magnification of the montages was approximately 13400 times. The long and short axes (a and b) of the nerve fibers and the myelin thickness (T) were measured with a caliper and the axon diameters (R were calculated by following formula: R2=[(a-2T)2+(b-2T)2]/2.
