Robust inference of galaxy stellar masses from photometry is crucial for constraints on galaxy assembly across cosmic time. Here, we test a commonly-used Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting code, using simulated galaxies from the SPHINX20 cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation, with JWST NIRCam photometry forward-modelled with radiative transfer. Fitting the synthetic photometry with various star formation history models, we show that recovered stellar masses are, encouragingly, generally robust to within a factor of ~3 for galaxies in the range M*~10^7-10^9M_sol at z=5-10. These results are in stark contrast to recent work claiming that stellar masses can be underestimated by as much as an order of magnitude in these mass and redshift ranges. However, while >90% of masses are recovered to within 0.5dex, there are notable systematic trends, with stellar masses typically overestimated for low-mass galaxies (M*<~10^8M_sol) and slightly underestimated for high-mass galaxies (M*>~10^9M_sol). We demonstrate that these trends arise due to the SED fitting code poorly modelling the impact of strong emission lines on broadband photometry. These systematic trends, which exist for all star formation history parametrisations tested, have a tilting effect on the inferred stellar mass function, with number densities of massive galaxies underestimated (particularly at the lowest redshifts studied) and number densities of lower-mass galaxies typically overestimated. Overall, this work suggests that we should be optimistic about our ability to infer the masses of high-z galaxies observed with JWST (notwithstanding contamination from AGN) but careful when modelling the impact of strong emission lines on broadband photometry., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Several Lyman Continuum (LyC) emitters have been detected so far, but their observed ionising spectra sometimes differ from attenuated stellar spectra predicted by stellar population synthesis modelling. This discrepancy may be due to a significant contribution of LyC nebular emission. We aim to quantify the importance this emission in LyC leakers: its contribution to the ionising photons budget, and to measurements of LyC escape. To estimate the nebular contribution to the LyC spectra of galaxies, we run photoionisation models with Cloudy for a range of BPASS templates, varying the column density of the surrounding gas, from density-bounded (log(NH$_{\rm{stop}}$/cm$^{-2}$)=16) to ionisation-bounded (log(NH$_{\rm{stop}}$/cm$^{-2}$)=19) regimes. In the limits of very optically thin (f$_{\rm{esc}}$ = 1), or thick configurations (f$_{\rm{esc}}$ = 0), there is no nebular contribution to the emergent LyC spectra. This contribution matters only at intermediate LyC opacities ($0 <$ f$_{\rm{esc}}$ $< 1$), where it alters the shape of the LyC spectrum chromatically, so that escape fractions estimates are highly sensitive to the wavelength range over which they are calculated. We propose a formula to estimate integrated escape fractions using f$_{\lambda 700}$/f$_{\lambda 1100}$ flux ratios, since this wavelength range is not affected by nebular emission. Regarding simulations, the boost of hydrogen ionising photons escaping galaxies is inversely proportional to the stellar escape fractions, but since typical simulated escape fractions are low, LyC photons escape is important. Nebular LyC is a non-negligible additional source of ionising photons from galaxies, which contribution has been overlooked so far in observations and in cosmic reionisation simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures (plus appendix). Finding reliable indicators of Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage from galaxies is essential in order to infer their escape fraction in the epoch of reionisation, where direct measurements of LyC flux are impossible. To this end, here we investigate whether strong C IV $\lambda \lambda 1548,1550$ emission in the rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies traces conditions ripe for ample production and escape of LyC photons. We compile a sample of 19 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $z=3.1-4.6$ from the VANDELS survey that exhibit strong C IV emission, producing a stacked spectrum where all major rest-UV emission lines are clearly detected. Best-fitting spectral energy distribution models containing both stellar and nebular emission suggest the need for low stellar metallicities ($Z=0.1-0.2\,Z_\odot$), young stellar ages ($\log(\rm{age/yr}) = 6.1-6.5$), a high ionisation parameter ($\log U = -2$) and little to no dust attenuation ($E(B-V)=0.00-0.01$). However, these models are unable to fully reproduce the observed C IV and He II line strengths. We find that the Ly$\alpha$ line in the stacked spectrum is strong and peaks close to the systemic velocity, features that are indicative of significant LyC photon leakage along the line-of-sight. The covering fractions of low-ionisation interstellar absorption lines are also low implying LyC escape fraction in the range $\approx 0.05-0.30$, with signatures of outflowing gas. Finally, C IV/C III] ratios of >0.75 for a subset of individual galaxies with reliable detections of both lines are also consistent with physical conditions that enable significant LyC leakage. Overall, we report that multiple spectroscopic indicators of LyC leakage are present in the stacked spectrum of strong C IV emitting galaxies, potentially making C IV an important tracer of LyC photon escape at $z>6$., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS

Observations of the early Universe suggest that reionization was complete by $z\sim6$, however, the exact history of this process is still unknown. One method for measuring the evolution of the neutral fraction throughout this epoch is via observing the Ly$\alpha$ damping wings of high-redshift quasars. In order to constrain the neutral fraction from quasar observations, one needs an accurate model of the quasar spectrum around Ly$\alpha$, after the spectrum has been processed by its host galaxy but before it is altered by absorption and damping in the intervening IGM. In this paper, we present a novel machine learning approach, using artificial neural networks, to reconstruct quasar continua around Ly$\alpha$. Our QSANNdRA algorithm improves the error in this reconstruction compared to the state-of-the-art PCA-based model in the literature by 14.2% on average, and provides an improvement of 6.1% on average when compared to an extension thereof. In comparison with the extended PCA model, QSANNdRA further achieves an improvement of 22.1% and 16.8% when evaluated on low-redshift quasars most similar to the two high-redshift quasars under consideration, ULAS J1120+0641 at $z=7.0851$ and ULAS J1342+0928 at $z=7.5413$, respectively. Using our more accurate reconstructions of these two $z>7$ quasars, we estimate the neutral fraction of the IGM using a homogeneous reionization model and find $\bar{x}_\mathrm{HI} = 0.25^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$ at $z=7.0851$ and $\bar{x}_\mathrm{HI} = 0.60^{+0.11}_{-0.11}$ at $z=7.5413$. Our results are consistent with the literature and favour a rapid end to reionization.

The scatter in the relationship between the strength of [CII] 158$\mu$m emission and the star formation rate at high-redshift has been the source of much recent interest. Although the relationship is well-established locally, several intensely star-forming galaxies have been found whose [CII] 158$\mu$m emission is either weak, absent or spatially offset from the young stars. Here we present new ALMA data for the two most distant, gravitationally-lensed and spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies, A2744\_YD4 at $z=$8.38 and MACS1149\_JD1 at $z=$9.11, both of which reveal intense [OIII] 88$\mu$m emission. In both cases we provide stringent upper limits on the presence of [CII] 158$\mu$m with respect to [OIII] 88$\mu$m. We review possible explanations for this apparent redshift-dependent [CII] deficit in the context of our recent hydrodynamical simulations. Our results highlight the importance of using several emission line diagnostics with ALMA to investigate the nature of the interstellar medium in early galaxies., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. We demonstrate the ability to reduce the carrier concentration of thin films of the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 by utilizing a novel approach, namely non-volatile electrostatic gating via corona charging of electret polymers. Sufficient electric field can be imparted to a polymer-TI bilayer to result in significant electron density depletion, even without the continuous connection of a gate electrode or the chemical modification of the TI. We show that the Fermi level of Bi2Se3 is shifted towards the Dirac point with this method. Using THz spectroscopy, we find that the surface chemical potential is lowered into the bulk band gap (~ 50 meV above the Dirac point and 170 meV below the conduction band minimum) and it is stabilized in the intrinsic regime while enhancing electron mobility. This represents the first use of a charged polymer gate for modulating TI charge density. In this work, we use charge extraction via organic overlayer deposition to lower the chemical potential of topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films into the intrinsic (bulk-insulating) regime. We demonstrate the tuning and stabilization of intrinsic topological insulators at high mobility with low-cost organic films. With the protection of the organic charge extraction layers tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane(F4TCNQ) or tris(acetylacetonato)cobalt(III) (Co(acac)3), the sample is stable in the atmosphere with chemical potential ~135 meV above the Dirac point (85 meV below the conduction band minimum, well within the topological insulator regime) after four months, which is an extraordinary level of environmental stability. The Co complex represents the first use of an organometallic for modulating TI charge density. The mobility of surface state electrons is enhanced as high as ~2000 cm2/Vs.
