The evolution of wireless communication systems will be fundamentally impacted by an open radio access network (O-RAN), a new concept defining an intelligent architecture with enhanced flexibility, openness, and the ability to slice services more efficiently. For all its promises, and like any technological advancement, O-RAN is not without risks that need to be carefully assessed and properly addressed to accelerate its wide adoption in future mobile networks. In this paper, we present an in-depth security analysis of the O-RAN architecture, discussing the potential threats that may arise in the different O-RAN architecture layers and their impact on the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad. We also promote the potential of zero trust, Moving Target Defense (MTD), blockchain, and large language models(LLM) technologies in fortifying O-RAN's security posture. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate the effectiveness of MTD in empowering robust deep reinforcement learning methods for dynamic network slice admission control in the O-RAN architecture. In this work, we propose a Multiple Access Control (MAC) protocol for Light-based IoT (LIoT) networks, where the gateway node orchestrates and schedules batteryless nodes duty-cycles based on their location and sleep time. The LIoT concept represents a sustainable solution for massive indoor IoT applications, offering an alternative communication medium through Visible Light Communication (VLC). While most existing scheduling algorithms for intermittent batteryless IoT aim to maximize data collection and enhance dataset size, our solution is tailored for environmental sensing applications, such as temperature, humidity, and air quality monitoring, optimizing measurement distribution and minimizing blind spots to achieve comprehensive and uniform environmental sensing. We propose a Balanced Space and Time-based Time Division Multiple Access scheduling (BST-TDMA) algorithm, which addresses environmental sensing challenges by balancing spatial and temporal factors to improve the environmental sensing efficiency of batteryless LIoT nodes. Our measurement-based results show that BST-TDMA was able to efficiently schedule duty-cycles with given intervals.

The sustainable design of Internet of Things (IoT) networks encompasses considerations related to energy efficiency and autonomy as well as considerations related to reliable communications, ensuring no energy is wasted on undelivered data. Under these considerations, this work proposes the design and implementation of energy-efficient Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Light-based IoT (LIoT) batteryless IoT sensor nodes powered by an indoor light Energy Harvesting Unit (EHU). Our design intends to integrate these nodes into a sensing network to improve its reliability by combining both technologies and taking advantage of their features. The nodes incorporate state-of-the-art components, such as low-power sensors and efficient System-on-Chips (SoCs). Moreover, we design a strategy for adaptive switching between active and sleep cycles as a function of the available energy, allowing the IoT nodes to continuously operate without batteries. Our results show that by adapting the duty cycle of the BLE and LIoT nodes depending on the environment's light intensity, we can ensure a continuous and reliable node operation. This paper explores novel strategies to strengthen the security of Hybrid Wireless Body Area Networks (HyWBANs), essential in smart healthcare and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Recognizing the vulnerability of HyWBAN to sophisticated cyber-attacks, we propose an innovative combination of semantic communications and jamming receivers. This dual-layered security mechanism protects against unauthorized access and data breaches, particularly in scenarios involving in-body to on-body communication channels. We conduct comprehensive laboratory measurements to understand hybrid (radio and optical) communication propagation through biological tissues and utilize these insights to refine a dataset for training a Deep Learning (DL) model. These models, in turn, generate semantic concepts linked to cryptographic keys for enhanced data confidentiality and integrity using a jamming receiver. The proposed model demonstrates a significant reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional cryptographic methods, like Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH), especially when supplemented with jamming. Our approach addresses the primary security concerns and sets the baseline for future secure biomedical communication systems advancements.

The growing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) networks has sparked interest in sustainable, zero-energy designs through Energy Harvesting (EH) to extend the lifespans of IoT sensors. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is particularly promising, integrating signal transmission with optical power harvesting to enable both data exchange and energy transfer in indoor network nodes. VLC indoor channels, however, can be unstable due to their line-of-sight nature and indoor movements. In conventional EH-based IoT networks, maximum Energy Storage (ES) capacity might halt further harvesting or waste excess energy, leading to resource inefficiency. Addressing these issues, this paper proposes a novel VLC-based WPANs concept that enhances both data and energy harvesting efficiency. The architecture employs densely distributed nodes and a central controller for simultaneous data and energy network operation, ensuring efficient energy exchange and resource optimisation. This approach, with centralised control and energy-state-aware nodes, aims for long-term energy autonomy. The feasibility of the Data-Energy Networking-enabled Light-based Internet of Things (DE-LIoT) concept is validated through real hardware implementation, demonstrating its sustainability and practical applicability. Results show significant improvements in the lifetime of resource-limited nodes, confirming the effectiveness of this new data and energy networking model in enhancing sustainability and resource optimisation in VLC-based WPANs.

This paper explores the road to vastly improving the broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps. Several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be mainly used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The commercial launch of 6G communications systems and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN SDGs, are both targeted for 2030. 6G communications is expected to boost global growth and productivity, create new business models and transform many aspects of society. The UN SDGs are a way of framing opportunities and challenges of a desirable future world and cover topics as broad as ending poverty, gender equality, climate change and smart cities. The relationship between these potentially mutually reinforcing forces is currently under-defined. Building on the vision for 6G, a review of megatrends, on-going activities on the relation of mobile communications to the UN SDGs and existing indicators, a novel linkage between 6G and the UN SDGs is proposed via indicators. The white paper has also launched the work of deriving new 6G related indicators to guide the research of 6G systems. The novel linkage is built on the envisaged three-fold role of 6G as a provider of services to help steer and support communities and countries towards reaching the UN SDGs, as an enabler of measuring tool for data collection to help reporting of indicators with hyperlocal granularity, and as a reinforcer of new ecosystems based on 6G technology enablers and 6G network of networks to be developed in line with the UN SDGs that incorporates future mobile communication technologies available in 2030. Related challenges are also identified. An action plan is presented along with prioritized focus areas within the mobile communication sector technology and industry evolution to best support the achievement of the UN SDGs.

This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. In this paper, a novel social network-aware user association in wireless small cell networks with underlaid device-to-device (D2D) communication is investigated. The proposed approach exploits social strategic relationships between user equipments (UEs) and their physical proximity to optimize the overall network performance. This problem is formulated as a matching game between UEs and their serving nodes (SNs) in which, an SN can be a small cell base station (SCBS) or an important UE with D2D capabilities. The problem is cast as a many-to-one matching game in which UEs and SNs rank one another using preference relations that capture both the wireless aspects (i.e., received signal strength, traffic load, etc.) and users' social ties (e.g., UE proximity and social distance). Due to the combinatorial nature of the network-wide UE-SN matching, the problem is decomposed into a dynamic clustering problem in which SCBSs are grouped into disjoint clusters based on mutual interference. Subsequently, an UE-SN matching game is carried out per cluster. The game under consideration is shown to belong to a class of matching games with externalities arising from interference and peer effects due to users social distance, enabling UEs and SNs to interact with one another until reaching a stable matching. Simulation results show that the proposed social-aware user association approach yields significant performance gains, reaching up to 26%, 24%, and 31% for 5-th, 50-th and 95-th percentiles for UE throughputs, respectively, as compared to the classical social-unaware baseline., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, Accepted in IEEE transactions on vehicular technology

In this paper, we propose a novel social network aware approach for user association in wireless small cell networks. The proposed approach exploits social relationships between user equipments (UEs) and their physical proximity to optimize the network throughput. We formulate the problem as a matching game between UEs and their serving nodes (SNs). In our proposed game, the serving node can be a small cell base station (SCBS) or an important node with device-to-device capabilities. In this game, the SCBSs and UEs maximize their respective utility functions capturing both the spatial and social structures of the network. We show that the proposed game belongs to the class of matching games with externalities. Subsequently, we propose a distributed algorithm using which the SCBSs and UEs interact and reach a stable matching. We show the convergence of the proposed algorithm and study the properties of the resulting matching. Simulation results show that the proposed socially-aware user association approach can efficiently offload traffic while yielding a significant gain reaching up to 63% in terms of data rates as compared to the classical (social-unaware) approach., Comment: IEEE WCNC 2014

Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is a simple and yet powerful method for simulation of interactions among individual agents. Using ABMS, different phenomena can be modeled and simulated without spending additional time on unnecessary complexities. Although ABMS is well-matured in many different fields such as economic, social, and natural phenomena, it has not received much attention in the context of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper, we present ABMQ, a powerful Agent-Based platform suitable for modeling and simulation of self-organization in wireless networks, and particularly MANETs. We provide a novel solution for Resource Discovery (RD) in mobile device clouds consisting of selfish nodes. Mobile device clouds (MDCs) refer to cooperative arrangement of communication-capable devices formed with resource-sharing goal in mind. Our work is motivated by the observation that with ever-growing applications of MDCs, it is essential to quickly locate resources offered in such clouds, where the resources could be content, computing resources, or communication resources. The current approaches for RD can be categorized into two models: decentralized model, where RD is handled by each node individually; and centralized model, where RD is assisted by centralized entities like cellular network. However, we propose LORD, a Leader-based framewOrk for RD in MDCs which is not only self-organized and not prone to having a single point of failure like the centralized model, but also is able to balance the energy consumption among MDC participants better than the decentralized model. Moreover, we provide a credit-based incentive to motivate participation of selfish nodes in the leader selection process, and present the first energy-aware leader selection mechanism for credit-based models. The simulation results demonstrate that LORD balances energy consumption among nodes and prolongs overall network lifetime compared to decentralized model.

As radio spectrum usage paradigm moving from the traditional command and control allocation scheme to the open spectrum allocation scheme, wireless networks meet new opportunities and challenges. In this article we introduce the concept of cognitive wireless mesh (CogMesh) networks and address the unique problem in such a network. CogMesh is a self-organized distributed network architecture combining cognitive technologies with the mesh structure in order to provide a uniform service platform over a wide range of networks. It is based on dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and featured by self-organization, self-configuration and self-healing. The unique problem in CogMesh is the common control channel problem, which is caused by the opportunistic spectrum sharing nature of secondary users (SU) in the network. More precisely, since the channels of SUs are fluctuating according to the radio environment, it is difficult to find always available global common control channels. This puts a significant challenge on the network design. We develop the control cloud based control channel selection and cluster based network formation techniques to tackle this problem. Moreover, we show in this article that the swarm intelligence is a good candidate to deal with the control channel problem in CogMesh.
