In this study, the effect of increased soil moisture on the nutritional status of two key commercial avocado (Persea americana Μill.) cultivars, 'Fuerte' and 'Hass', was examined. The results revealed that prolonged exposure of plants to high soil water content conditions (waterlogging) reduced the total nutrient content (absolute quantity) of almost all of the nutrients in scion's tissues (leaves and stems) of both cultivars. The decrease of nutrient content in the 'Fuerte' leaves was more prominent/severe compared to the 'Hass' leaves, which could be the outcome of the reported higher sensitivity of the cultivar to soil waterlogged conditions in previous studies. Interestingly, the inability of 'Fuerte' avocado plants to withstand high soil moisture conditions was not reflected in the relative concentrations of most nutrients, both in leaves and stems. Indeed, significantly higher concentrations of P, K, B, Fe, and Zn were found in the leaves of 'Fuerte' waterlogged plants than in well-watered ones. This fact reveals that under marginal/stressful conditions, like waterlogging, nutrient concentration in tissues does not reflect potential negative effects on total nutrient uptake of avocado plants, obviously due to concentrated nutrient phenomena primarily created by the stress-dependent growth inhibition. In a survey performed in Chania and Aetoloacarnania, Greece in years 2013–2014, fungal isolates causing twig and shoot blight and branch canker of citrus trees were morphologically characterized and identified by multiple gene sequence analysis. By sequencing the ITS‐5.8S rRNA, the elongation factor 1‐α (EF1‐α), the β‐tubulin and the RNA polymerase II subunit (Rpb2) genes, the isolates examined were associated with Diaporthe foeniculina (six isolates) and Neofusicoccum parvum (one isolate). All six D. foeniculina isolates showed slow colony growth rates (7.4 ± 3.2 mm/day), while the N. parvum isolate exhibited fast growth (41.6 mm/day). Koch's criteria were met after re‐isolation of D. foeniculina isolates from all inoculated Citrus spp. and N. parvum from inoculated C. reticulata "Ortanique" and after having developed symptoms similar to those detected on shoots and branches collected from citrus fields. Based on lesion length on detached C. medica "Lia Kritis" shoots, N. parvum caused long necrotic lesions (58 mm in length) in comparison with a length of 12–21 mm lesions caused by D. foeniculina isolates. Pathogenicity trials on nine Citrus spp., which had been inoculated with D. foeniculina and N. parvum, revealed different levels of susceptibility, indicating a host‐dependent infection effect, with Poncirus trifoliate × C. paradisi ("Citrumelo Swingle") being the most resistant citrus genotype. Lack of host specificity suggests that their pathogen–host association could be attributed to ecological rather to co‐evolutionary factors. This work represents the first report, accompanied with pathogenicity tests, on botryosphaeriaceous and diaporthaceous pathogens associated with twig and shoot blight and branch canker of citrus in Greece. Beneficial microorganisms are known to promote plant growth and confer resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. Soil-borne beneficial microbes in particular have shown potential in protecting plants against pathogens and herbivores via the elicitation of plant responses. In this study, we evaluated the role of Fusarium solani strain K (FsK) in altering plant responses to the two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae in tomato. We found evidence that FsK, a beneficial endophytic fungal strain isolated from the roots of tomato plants grown on suppressive compost, affects both direct and indirect tomato defenses against spider mites. Defense-related genes were differentially expressed on FsK-colonized plants after spider mite infestation compared to clean or spider mite-infested un-colonized plants. In accordance, spider mite performance was negatively affected on FsK-colonized plants and feeding damage was lower on these compared to control plants. Notably, FsK-colonization led to increased plant biomass to both spider mite-infested and un-infested plants. FsK was shown to enhance indirect tomato defense as FsK-colonized plants attracted more predators than un-colonized plants. In accordance, headspace volatile analysis revealed significant differences between the volatiles emitted by FsK-colonized plants in response to attack by spider mites. Our results highlight the role of endophytic fungi in shaping plant–mite interactions and may offer the opportunity for the development of a novel tool for spider mite control. Tissue distribution of carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC; EC 4.1.1.31) was examined in developing soybean (Glycine max) nodules using an immunohistological approach. The data obtained indicate that in young nodules both CA and PEPC proteins are present in the parenchymatous cells, and at much lower levels, in the central nodular region. In mature nodules, high levels of CA were exclusively present in 2-3 cell layers of the inner cortical region, whereas high levels of PEPC were present both in infected and uninfected cells. Immunogold localization indicated that, in mature nodules, CA was localized in the cytoplasm of the inner cortical cells and the cell walls of the endodermal cells. These results considered together suggest that in mature nodules, CA may facilitate the diffusion of the excessive CO2, derived from the respired bacteroids, in the rhizosphere. The distribution of CA was examined in mature nodules of soybean, grown hydroponically, in either limiting or non-limiting phosphate concentrations. The data indicated that in plants growing on non-limiting phosphate concentrations, an additional strong signal was found in cortical cells surrounding the nodule vascular bundles. Nanofungicides are expected to play an important role in future plant disease management as eco-friendly alternatives of conventional synthetic fungicides. The suppressive properties of metal nanoparticles containing copper (Cu-NPs, CuO-NPs), silver (Ag-NPs) and zinc (ZnO-NPs) were assessed in vitro against seven causal agents of economically important foliar and soil-borne plant diseases. Cu-NPs were proven to be most successful in inhibiting mycelial growth (EC50 values ranging between 162 and 310 μg/mL) followed by ZnO-NPs exhibiting mean inhibition rates ranging between 235 and 848 μg/mL. All fungal species were practically insensitive to CuO-NPs while Ag-NPs exhibited significant inhibitory effect only against B. cinerea.. Comparative mycelial growth fungitoxicity experiments between the nanoparticles tested and their bulk sized counterparts revealed that ZnO-NPs were more toxic to all fungal species tested than ZnSO4 whereas CuNPs were more fungitoxic to CuSO4 in all cases except for B. cinerea, A. alternata and M. fructicola. A positive correlation between Cu-NPs and CuO-NPs toxicity and the absence of any correlation between NPs and their respective bulk metal counterparts is indicative of potential differences in the mode of action between bulk and nanosized metals. Although there was considerable variation between fungal species, fungitoxicity of all nanoparticles dramatically increased when applied to spores rather than fungal hyphae indicating a great potential of these compounds to be used as protective antifungal agents.
