Abstract

Conversion of anonymous run-of-mine volumes of raw materials into 'intelligent' volumes that retain information about important processing parameters is discussed. Transformation of this information into process machinery equipment settings or control commands in order to optimise blending is expected to lead to significant reductions in energy consumption and increases in recovery of useful raw materials. A geoprocessing simulation model of important processing parameters of a deposit and regular updating of the model to provide data for on-line assessment of actual mined portions of material at the faces are described. Annotation of the transported raw material is achieved by using embedded tags to ensure retention of the obtained information. Abstract

Results are presented which show that the operating power requirements of a belt conveyor should be calculated on the basis of the mean rather than the instantaneous capacity of a bucket wheel excavator (BWE), averaged over the period of time required to load the whole conveyor. Abstract

A new method of computing the main resistance components of belt conveyors has been developed at the Institute of Mining Engineering of the Technical University of Wroclaw. It is based on the analysis of energy dissipation processes in the belt and the material load stream, as well as an analysis of the interaction between the belt and idlers. In the algorithm, which calculates the total effective tension and required power of the main drive units, the properties of the belt, conveyed material and maintenance conditions are all taken into account. The new method is compared to standard ISO-5048 and CEMA computation methods. It was found to match the established standards within the range of average belt properties. Abstract

Interactive computer software has been developed for planning and controlling conveyor belt operation and maintenance. The continuous conveying system is located in the Rudna copper mine in Poland, where 12 000 000 t/a ore is transported to feeding points for crushing and screening before feeding on to a network of 80 conveyors totalling 40 km in length. Poor record-keeping and low information availability led to the development of the new maintenance management system, which has been designed to operate on personal computers installed for the sole use of the maintenance department responsible for belt conveying equipment. The system is subdivided into the following modules: equipment identification, equipment history, preventative maintenance, major component tracking and local inventory control. Abstract

Trends in belt conveyors systems are discussed for Polish coal, copper and lignite mines and data are presented on horizontal transport in the Lubin, Polkowice-Sieroszowice and Rudna underground Cu mines and the lengths of belt conveyors in open-cast lignite mines. Abstract

This paper presents result of comparison of Cu content variability in three industrial ore streams, that is on section and transfer conveyors as well as feed for the processing plant. Comparisons were focused only on ore grade variability for consecutive shifts during one month. The samples were taken manually throughout the whole shift from the transfer conveyor and automatically from the conveyor which provides the ore to the concentration plant. The comparisons indicated that the smallest variability of Cu content can be observed for feed to the processing plant with coefficient of variation (cov) equal to 5.33% and the biggest for the ore stream on the transfer conveyor with cov equals to 11.85%. The grade distribution for the transfer conveyor cannot be described by normal distribution, as is the case for ore going to the processing plant and ore supplied onto the sections conveyors. The smallest variability in feed to the concentration plant is a consequence of almost perfect ore mixing and averaging of the ore due to coming from different locations and bunkers. Mixing is only partial on the transfer conveyor because of smaller number of ore sources as well as time separation between following loads from the mining faces. This gives in effect larger, instead of smaller, spread between the minimum and maximum Cu content. The spread was 1.36% in comparison to 0.45% for the processing plant feed and 0.99% for the section conveyor. The distribution was not symmetric. The standard skewness for the transfer conveyor was 4.79 in comparison to 0.2 for the processing plant feed and 0.96 for the section conveyor. Abstract

The conditional simulation method was implemented in the Datamine Studio software package and applied to the case study of the large lignite deposit at Legnica East in Poland to model the integrated coal quality index. The simulated values were interpolated into a set of equally probable quality block models which were employed to generate several hybrid ultimate pits using the Lerchs-Grossman algorithm and a series of long-term mine schedules. Abstract

Purpose: 3D echocardiography (3DE) enables fast 3D acquisition but subsequent manual navigation to find 2D diagnostic planes can be time consuming. We have developed and validated an automated machine learning-based technique to find apical 2-, 3- and 4-chamber (A2C, A3C, A4C) views that enables fast volume navigation and analysis. Methods: 3DE volumes were acquired (Philips iE33: X3-1 and X5-1 probes) from 30 healthy volunteers and 36 clinical patients with suspected valve disease and coronary heart disease. 66 end diastolic volumes were used to assess the accuracy of apical standard view finding by our method against manual plane finding. To do this, dedicated software was developed with a machine learning approach and a 3-fold cross validation of results was performed. Results: Automatic A4C view detection was possible in 60/66 (91%) of volumes; detection failures were due to suboptimal myocardium wall integrity or lack of right ventricle in the scan. A2C and A3C views were extracted from the A4C view using the known geometrical relationships between apical standard views (A2C to A3C: 30°~40° and A2C to A4C: 90° of rotation over the left ventricle long axis, as shown in the Figure). In average, our method accurately found the heart apex and mitral valve centre with a 7.1 ± 5.7 mm and 7.2 ± 5.3 mm error, respectively. Conclusions: In order to automate clinical workflow, we have developed a new and fully automatic machine learning strategy for apical standard view finding which performed well (91% detection accuracy) on volunteer and clinical 3D echocardiograms. Abstract

Purpose: To explore the cost effectiveness of expert hand-held echo (HHE) upstream as an alternative to referral for a complete transthoracic echo (TTE) in clinical routine. We hypothized that an upstream HHE approach would prove adequate and cost effective in terms of - Decrease the numbers of required TTE - Fewer revisits to the outpatient unit - Shorten the length of admission - Increase the number of higly specialized echoes, i.e. stress echo, transesophageal echoes - Shorten the time to final diagnosis and decrease the concerns for the patient who is forced to wait for survey and results at complete TTE. Methods: In this study, a HHE scanner (V-scan, GE Health care) was kept available for the senior consultants with level 3 TTE certification, for use in patients where a TTE was indicated. HHE was performed in different clinical scenarios such in the emergency room, during consultation of inpatients or in the clinic of outpatients. The results of HHE was documented in the patient record under a heading and can directly be found upon request. The length of hospital stay during a representative week, is compared between patients who have not undergone HHE with patients undergoing HHE. Results: Out of a total of 94 patients examined with HHE, 71 patients were not in need of a complete TTE. Additional 11 patients received a more rapid investigation i.e stress-echo, transesophageal echocardiography or other investigations that would otherwise have been delayed because of waiting for the complete TTE. 12 patients were in need of a complete TTE for a more precise analysis. In the heart clinic of Danderyds hospital approximately 18 inpatients were examined with a complete TTE every ordinary week and that postpone the day of submission from hospital among approximately 6 patients a week. Every day of care in hospital cost 445 € in an ordinary ward and 981 € in the heart intensive care unit. This means there is a cost benefit of approximately 3741 € every week if it is possible to prevent this postponing of submission. Conclusions: Upstream HHE in clinical routine was in the setting of this study highly cost-effective, decreasing the need of TTE to a great extent, and leading to quicker diagnosis, shorter hospital stays and less anxiety in patients during the waiting time for a complete TTE and before a response is received.
