There is much interest in the topic of partial information decomposition, both in developing new algorithms and in developing applications. An algorithm, based on standard results from information geometry, was recently proposed by Niu and Quinn (2019). They considered the case of three scalar random variables from an exponential family, including both discrete distributions and a trivariate Gaussian distribution. The purpose of this article is to extend their work to the general case of multivariate Gaussian systems having vector inputs and a vector output. By making use of standard results from information geometry, explicit expressions are derived for the components of the partial information decomposition for this system. These expressions depend on a real-valued parameter which is determined by performing a simple constrained convex optimisation. Furthermore, it is proved that the theoretical properties of non-negativity, self-redundancy, symmetry and monotonicity, which were proposed by Williams and Beer (2010), are valid for the decomposition I ig derived herein. Application of these results to real and simulated data show that the I ig algorithm does produce the results expected when clear expectations are available, although in some scenarios, it can overestimate the level of the synergy and shared information components of the decomposition, and correspondingly underestimate the levels of unique information. Comparisons of the I ig and I dep (Kay and Ince, 2018) methods show that they can both produce very similar results, but interesting differences are provided. The perception of intent in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) often relies on synthetic animacy displays. This study tests intention perception in ASD via animacy stimuli derived from human motion. Using a forced choice task, 28 participants (14 ASDs; 14 age and verbal-I.Q. matched controls) categorized displays of Chasing, Fighting, Flirting, Following, Guarding and Playing, from two viewpoints (side, overhead) in both animacy and full video displays. Detailed analysis revealed no differences between populations in accuracy, or response patterns. Collapsing across groups revealed Following and Video displays to be most accurately perceived. The stimuli and intentions used are compared to those of previous studies, and the implication of our results on the understanding of Theory of Mind in ASD is discussed.

The authors revisit this topic with the goals of quantifying human efficiency at gender recognition. To achieve this, the authors first derive an ideal observer for gender recognition on the basis of center of moment (J. E. Cutting, D. R. Proffitt, & L. T. Kozlowski, 1978) and, with the use of anthropometric data from various populations, show optimal recognition of [similar to] 79% correct. Next, they perform a meta-analysis of 21 experiments examining gender recognition, obtaining accuracies of 66% correct for a side view and 71% for other views. Finally, results of the meta-analysis and the ideal observer are combined to obtain estimates of human efficiency at gender recognition of 26% for the side view and 47% for other views.

Synergistic interactions between independent synaptic input streams may fundamentally change the action potential (AP) output. Using partial information decomposition, we demonstrate here a substantial contribution of synergy between somatic and apical dendritic inputs to the information in the AP output of L5b pyramidal neurons. Activation of dendritic GABA B receptors (GABA B Rs), known to decrease APs in vivo , potently decreased synergy and increased somatic control of AP output. Synergy was the result of the voltage-dependence of the transfer resistance between dendrite and soma, which showed a two-fold increase per 28.7 mV dendritic depolarization. GIRK channels activated by dendritic GABA B Rs decreased voltage-dependent transfer resistances and AP output. In contrast, inhibition of dendritic L-type Ca2+ channels prevented high-frequency bursts of APs, but did not affect dendro-somatic synergy. Finally, we show that NDNF-positive neurogliaform cells effectively control somatic AP via synaptic activation of dendritic GIRK channels. Information processing within neural systems often depends upon selective amplification of relevant signals and suppression of irrelevant signals. This has been shown many times by studies of contextual effects but there is as yet no consensus on how to interpret such studies. Some researchers interpret the effects of context as contributing to the selective receptive field (RF) input about which neurons transmit information. Others interpret context effects as affecting transmission of information about RF input without becoming part of the RF information transmitted. Here we use partial information decomposition (PID) and entropic information decomposition (EID) to study the properties of a form of modulation previously used in neurobiologically plausible neural nets. PID shows that this form of modulation can affect transmission of information in the RF input without the binary output transmitting any information unique to the modulator. EID produces similar decompositions, except that information unique to the modulator and the mechanistic shared component can be negative when modulating and modulated signals are correlated. Synergistic and source shared components were never negative in the conditions studied. Thus, both PID and EID show that modulatory inputs to a local processor can affect the transmission of information from other inputs. Contrary to what was previously assumed, this transmission can occur without the modulatory inputs becoming part of the information transmitted, as shown by the use of PID with the model we consider. Decompositions of psychophysical data from a visual contrast detection task with surrounding context suggest that a similar form of modulation may also occur in real neural systems.
