Advancements in satellite technology have made direct-to-device connectivity a viable solution for ensuring global access. This method is designed to provide internet connectivity to remote, rural, or underserved areas where traditional cellular or broadband networks are lacking or insufficient. This paper is a survey providing an in-depth review of multi-satellite Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems as a potential solution for addressing the link budget challenge in direct user-satellite communication. Special attention is given to works considering multi-satellite MIMO systems, both with and without satellite collaboration. In this context, collaboration refers to sharing data between satellites to improve the performance of the system. This survey begins by explaining several fundamental aspects of satellite communications (SatComs), which are vital prerequisites before investigating the multi-satellite MIMO systems. These aspects encompass satellite orbits, the structure of satellite systems, SatCom links, including the inter-satellite links (ISL) which facilitate satellite cooperation, satellite frequency bands, satellite antenna design, and satellite channel models, which should be known or estimated for effective data transmission to and from multiple satellites. Furthermore, this survey distinguishes itself by providing more comprehensive insights in comparison to other surveys. It specifically delves into the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) within the channel model section. It goes into detail about ISL noise and channel models, and it extends the ISL section by thoroughly investigating hybrid FSO/RF ISLs. This paper examines the uplink transmission of a single-antenna handsheld user to a cluster of satellites, with a focus on utilizing the inter-satellite links to enable cooperative signal detection. Two cases are studied: one with full CSI and the other with partial CSI between satellites. The two cases are compared in terms of capacity, overhead, and bit error rate. Additionally, the impact of channel estimation error is analyzed in both designs, and robust detection techniques are proposed to handle channel uncertainty up to a certain level. The performance of each case is demonstrated, and a comparison is made with conventional satellite communication schemes where only one satellite can connect to a user. The results of our study reveal that the proposed constellation with a total of 3168 satellites in orbit can enable a capacity of 800 Mbits/sec through cooperation of $12$ satellites with and occupied bandwidth of 500 MHz. In contrast, conventional satellite communication approaches with the same system parameters yield a significantly lower capacity of less than 150 Mbits/sec for the nearest satellite.

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity method to approximately solve the SINR-constrained optimization problem of symbol-level precoding (SLP). First, assuming a generic modulation scheme, the precoding optimization problem is recast as a standard non-negative least squares (NNLS). Then, we improve an existing closed-form SLP (CF-SLP) scheme using the conditions for nearly perfect recovery of the optimal solution support, followed by solving a reduced system of linear equations. We show through simulation results that in comparison with the CF-SLP method, the improved approximate solution of this paper, referred to as ICF-SLP, significantly enhances the performance with a negligible increase in complexity. We also provide comparisons with a fast-converging iterative NNLS algorithm, where it is shown that the ICF-SLP method is comparable in performance to the iterative algorithm with a limited maximum number of iterations. Analytic discussions on the complexities of different methods are provided, verifying the computational efficiency of the proposed method. In this paper, we address robust design of symbol-level precoding for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output wireless channels, in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. In particular, we consider two common uncertainty models for the CSI imperfection, namely, spherical (bounded) and stochastic (Gaussian). Our design objective is to minimize the total (per-symbol) transmission power subject to constructive interference (CI) constraints as well as users' quality-of-service requirements in terms of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Assuming bounded channel uncertainties, we obtain a convex CI constraint based on the worst-case robust analysis, whereas in the case of Gaussian uncertainties, we define probabilistic CI constraints in order to achieve robustness to statistically-known CSI errors. Since the probabilistic constraints of actual interest are difficult to handle, we resort to their convex approximations, yielding tractable (deterministic) robust constraints. Three convex approximations are developed based on different robust conservatism approaches, among which one is introduced as a benchmark for comparison. We show that each of our proposed approximations is tighter than the other under specific robustness conditions, while both always outperform the benchmark. Using the developed CI constraints, we formulate the robust precoding optimization as a convex conic quadratic program. Extensive simulation results are provided to validate our analytic discussions and to make comparisons with existing robust precoding schemes. In this paper we propose a simple method for generating short-length rate-compatible codes over $\mathbb{Z}_M$ that are robust to non-coherent detection for $M$-PSK constellations. First, a greedy algorithm is used to construct a family of rotationally invariant codes for a given constellation. Then, by properly modifying such codes we obtain codes that are robust to non-coherent detection. We briefly discuss the optimality of the constructed codes for special cases of BPSK and QPSK constellations. Our method provides an upper bound for the length of optimal codes with a given desired non-coherent distance. We also derive a simple asymptotic upper bound on the frame error rate (FER) of such codes and provide the simulation results for a selected set of proposed codes. In this paper, we investigate the downlink transmission of a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel under a symbol-level precoding (SLP) scheme, having imperfect channel knowledge at the transmitter. In defining the SLP problem, a general category of constructive interference regions (CIR) called distance preserving CIR (DPCIR) is adopted. In particular, we are interested in the robust SLP design minimizing the total transmit power while satisfying the users' quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. We consider two common models for the channel uncertainty region, namely, norm-bounded spherical and stochastic. For the spherical uncertainty model, a worst-case robust precoder is proposed, while for the stochastic uncertainties, we define a convex optimization problem with probabilistic constraints. We simulate the performance of the proposed robust approaches, and compare them with the existing methods. In this paper, we investigate the symbol-level precoding (SLP) design problem in the downlink of a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel. We consider generic constellations with any arbitrary shape and size, and confine ourselves to one of the main categories of constructive interference regions (CIR), namely, distance preserving CIR (DPCIR). We provide a comprehensive study of DPCIRs and derive some properties for these regions. Using these properties, we first show that any signal in a given DPCIR has a norm greater than or equal to the norm of the corresponding constellation point if and only if the convex hull of the constellation contains the origin. It is followed by proving that the power of the noiseless received signal lying on a DPCIR is a monotonic strictly increasing function of two parameters relating to the infinite Voronoi edges. Using the convex description of DPCIRs and their properties, we formulate two design problems, namely, the SLP power minimization with signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints, and the SLP SINR balancing problem under max-min fairness criterion. The SLP power minimization based on DPCIRs can straightforwardly be written as a quadratic program (QP). We provide a simplified reformulation of this problem which is less computationally complex. The SLP max-min SINR, however, is non-convex in its original form, and hence difficult to tackle. We propose several alternative optimization approaches, including semidefinite program (SDP) formulation and block coordinate descent (BCD) optimization. Next generation wireless systems will need higher spectral efficiency as the expected traffic volumes per unit bandwidth and dimension will inevitably grow. As a consequence, it is necessary to design coding schemes with performances close to the theoretical limits, having high flexibility and low complexity requirements at transmitter and receiver. In this paper, we point out some of the limitations of the Bit Interleaved Code Modulation (BICM) technique which is the state of the art adopted in several standards and then propose some new lower complexity alternatives. These low complexity alternatives are obtained by applying the recently introduced Analog Digital Belief Propagation (ADBP) algorithm to a two stage encoding scheme embedding a hard decoding stage. First we show that for PAM$^2$ type constellations over the AWGN channel, the performance loss caused by using a hard decoded stage for all modulation bits except the two least protected is negligible. Next, we consider the application of two stage decoders to more challenging Rician channels, showing that in this case the number of bits needed to be soft decoded depends on the Rician factor and increases to a maximum of three bits per dimension for the Rayleigh channel. Despite of the known gap from the Shannon's capacity, several standards are still employing QAM or star shape constellations, mainly due to the existing low complexity detectors. In this paper, we investigate the low complexity detection for a family of QAM isomorphic constellations. These constellations are known to perform very close to the peak-power limited capacity, outperforming the DVB-S2X standard constellations. The proposed strategy is to first remap the received signals to the QAM constellation using the existing isomorphism and then break the log likelihood ratio computations to two one dimensional PAM constellations. Gains larger than 0.6 dB with respect to QAM can be obtained over the peak power limited channels without any increase in detection complexity. Our scheme also provides a systematic way to design constellations with low complexity one dimensional detectors. In this paper we use a variation of simulated annealing algorithm for optimizing two-dimensional constellations with 32 signals. The main objective is to maximize the symmetric pragmatic capacity under the peak-power constraint. The method allows the joint optimization of constellation and binary labeling. We also investigate the performance of the optimized constellation over nonlinear satellite channel under additive white Gaussian noise. We consider the performance over systems with and without pre-distorters. In both cases the optimized constellations perform considerably better than the conventional Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulations, used in the current digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-S2) on satellite channels. In this paper we optimize constellation sets to be used for channels affected by phase noise. The main objective is to maximize the achievable mutual information of the constellation under a given power constraint. The mutual information and pragmatic mutual information of a given constellation is calculated approximately assuming that both the channel and phase noise are white. Then a simulated annealing algorithm is used to jointly optimize the constellation and the binary labeling. In this paper we discuss a novel data compression technique for binary symmetric sources based on the cavity method over a Galois Field of order q (GF(q)). We present a scheme of low complexity and near optimal empirical performance. The compression step is based on a reduction of sparse low density parity check codes over GF(q) and is done through the so called reinforced belief-propagation equations. These reduced codes appear to have a non-trivial geometrical modification of the space of codewords which makes such compression computationally feasible. The computational complexity is O(d.n.q.log(q)) per iteration, where d is the average degree of the check nodes and n is the number of bits. For our code ensemble, decompression can be done in a time linear in the code's length by a simple leaf-removal algorithm., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we consider the lossy compression of a binary symmetric source. We present a scheme that provides a low complexity lossy compressor with near optimal empirical performance. The proposed scheme is based on b-reduced ultra-sparse LDPC codes over GF(q). Encoding is performed by the Reinforced Belief Propagation algorithm, a variant of Belief Propagation. The computational complexity at the encoder is O(.n.q.log q), where is the average degree of the check nodes. For our code ensemble, decoding can be performed iteratively following the inverse steps of the leaf removal algorithm.
