We carried out SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating on A-type granitic intrusions from the Namaqua-Natal Province, South Africa, Sverdrupfjella, western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica and the Nampula Province of northern Mozambique. Zircon grains in these granitic rocks are typically elongated and oscillatory zoned, suggesting magmatic origins. Zircons from the granitoid intrusions analyzed in this study suggest ∼1025–1100 Ma ages, which confirm widespread Mesoproterozoic A-type granitic magmatism in the Namaqua-Natal (South Africa), Maud (Antarctica) and Mozambique metamorphic terrains. No older inherited (e.g., ∼2500 Ma Achean basement or ∼1200 Ma island arc magmatism in northern Natal) zircon grains were seen. Four plutons from the Natal Belt (Mvoti Pluton, Glendale Pluton, Kwalembe Pluton, Ntimbankulu Pluton) display 1050–1040 Ma ages, whereas the Nthlimbitwa Pluton in northern Natal indicates older 1090–1080 Ma ages. A sample from Sverdrupfjella, Antarctica has ∼1091 Ma old zircons along with ∼530 Ma metamorphic rims. Similarly, four samples analysed from the Nampula Province of Mozambique suggest crystallization ages of ∼1060–1090 Ma but also show significant discordance with two samples showing younger ∼550 Ma overgrowths. None of the Natal samples show any younger overgrowths. A single sample from southwestern Namaqualand yielded an age of ∼1033 Ma.Currently available chronological data suggest magmatism took place in the Namaqua-Natal-Maud-Mozambique (NNMM) belt between ∼1025 Ma and ∼1100 Ma with two broad phases between ∼1060–1020 Ma and 1100–1070 Ma respectively, with peaks at between ∼1030–1040 Ma and ∼1070–1090 Ma. The age data from the granitic intrusions from Namaqualand, combined with those from Natal, Antarctica and Mozambique suggest a crude spatial-age relationship with the older >1070 Ma ages being largely restricted close to the eastern and western margins of the Kalahari Craton in northern Natal, Mozambique, Namaqualand and WDML Antarctica whereas the younger

We summarize U–Pb age data for the Lutzow–Holm Complex (LHC) in East Antarctica and propose the following geological subdivisions based on protolith ages, along the coast of Dronning Maud Land from southwest to northeast: the Innhovde Suite (INH, 1070–1040 Ma) composed mainly of felsic orthogneiss; the Rundvagshetta Suite (RVG, 2520–2470 Ma), mostly felsic orthogneiss with minor mafic and metasedimentary gneisses; the Skallevikshalsen Suite (SKV, 1830–1790 Ma), felsic to mafic orthogneiss with abundant dolomitic marbles, calc-silicates and other metasediments; the Langhovde Suite (LHV, 1100–1050 Ma), mostly felsic orthogneiss with minor mafic and calc-silicate gneisses; the East Ongul Suite (EOG, 630 Ma), with various orthogneisses and metasediments; and the Akarui Suite (AKR, 970–800 Ma) with diverse orthogneisses and paragneisses. The oldest crustal components of the LHC lie in the southern part of Lutzow–Holm Bay, and consist of late Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic protoliths to charnockites and enderbites that dominate the Rundvagshetta and Skallevikshalsen Suites. This older domain is surrounded by gneisses and granulites with late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic protolith ages, including the Innhovde Suite and the Langhovde Suite. The Akarui Suite contains diverse orthogneisses with Neoproterozoic protoloiths, and the youngest unit is the East Ongul Suite with protolith ages of ~630 Ma. Cape Hinode, located geographically within the Akarui Suite, underwent high-grade metamorphism at ~960 Ma that is much older than that which produced the gneisses and granulites of the surrounding LHC (~600–520 Ma). Cape Hinode is therefore exotic, independent of the surrounding LHC, and defined as the “Hinode Block”. The boundaries proposed in this paper are largely consistent with those inferred from magnetic anomalies, gravity anomalies, and bedrock topographical data.

Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon age dating was applied to several types of cordierite-bearing gneisses and orthopyroxene-bearing gneiss from the basement rocks in central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, to clarify the timing of tectonothermal events during the amalgamation of East and West Gondwana. The zircon ages of ca. 522–525 and 598–599 Ma were obtained in Filchnerfjella and Hochlinfjellet, respectively, and the cathodoluminescence images of analyzed zircons suggest that these were formed during high-temperature metamorphism. These two sets of ages are interpreted to represent periods that immediately followed the peak metamorphism. The dating results reveal an age gap of 80 Myr between the two areas, indicating different collisional events. In the cordierite-bearing samples in Filchnerfjella, zircon cores with oscillatory zoning have concordia ages that range from 1800 to 650 Ma. The Taishu Group, a marine formation with a thickness of >5400 m, crops out on Tsushima Island, located in the southwestern Japan Sea. The group, which is generally regarded as early Eocene to early Miocene in age, provides important information about the tectonic setting of the Japan Sea. In this study, we present new SHRIMP U–Pb dates for igneous zircons from the Kunehama Tuff, which is in the basal part of the Taishu Group, and the Oobaura Tuff, which is in the uppermost part of the group. Results show that the Taishu Group was deposited rapidly, during the short interval of 17.9–15.9 Ma (early–middle Miocene), and is equivalent to other early–middle Miocene strata found in the Japan Sea region. Our results provide new constraints on the geological history of the Japan Sea and its islands.

Here we report on the unexpected occurrence of felsic (granitic) inclusions with quench textures such as spherulite and dendrite (hereafter referred to as “felsite inclusions”), similar to some volcanic rocks, within garnet in presumably “slowly cooled” lower-crustal granulites of various geologic ages ranging from Early Proterozoic to Middle Paleozoic and wide global distribution (the Limpopo Belt, the Grenville Province, the Lutzow-Holm Complex of East Antarctica, the Highland Complex of Sri Lanka, and the southern Bohemian Massif). The well-preserved textures of felsite inclusions are indicative of melts formed by anatexis during high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism, crystallization under far-from-equilibrium conditions (at > 50 °C undercooling) and subsequent rapid cooling. The occurrence of felsite inclusions in granulites in restricted tectonostratigraphic zones in Sri Lanka, among other examples, may be the first geologic evidence for fast exhumation of lower-crustal rocks to andalusite-stable upper-crustal conditions by channel flow in a continental collision orogen. We hypothesize that granulites ascend episodically along discrete high-strain zones and cool as fast as some felsic magmas. This conclusion sheds new light on the debate regarding the deep crustal processes and necessitates changes to fundamental beliefs about exhumation rates based on rates of plate convergence (1–10 cm/year).

Several schools of thoughts exist on how and when exactly did the final assembly of East Gondwana occurred and this topic has been discussed over and again in the past few decades. Here we review the present status of our understanding of Neoproterozoic to Cambrian tectonic evolution of the southern sector of East Gondwana and by assembling this special issue we present some of the key elements of new structural, geological and geochronological information obtained from the inland Sor Rondane Mountains in the Dronning Maud Land and surrounding regions. Altogether fifteen contributions are included in this special issue, most off which are exploring whether the Neoproterozoic orogens of East African Antarctic orogen and the late Kuunga orogens have affected the same geological entity. The results presented suggest the importance of Sor Rondane Mountains in understanding the tectonics of the final amalgamation of East Gondwana.

This study is a detailed investigation of the petrology and geochronology of the Late Proterozoic metatonalite in the Sor Rondane Mountains, eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Metatonalite is dominant over roughly 100 × 20 km 2 area in the southwestern end of the mountain range and is classified into five lithologies: gneissose Bt–Hbl metatonalite, weak gneissose Hbl–Bt metatonalite, Hbl metagabbro, Hbl–Bt tonalitic gneiss, and Bt metatonalite. The gneissose Bt–Hbl metatonalite is the main lithotype widely distributed over this area, which is geochemically categorized as low-K tholeiitic granitoid. Petrological studies suggest that the tholeiitic magma was derived from low-K basalt melting at the crustal depth, and the most plausible tectonic setting is a juvenile oceanic arc. The other four metaplutonic rocks are scattered as stocks or small intrusions in this area. They are geochemically regarded as calc-alkaline adakites related to oceanic slab melting. U–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages of the tholeiitic metatonalite are concentrated at 998–995 Ma, whereas the calc-alkaline adakitic rocks are younger and divided between ages 945–920 Ma and 772 Ma. We believe that the tholeiitic metatonalite was formed first as a juvenile arc component between 998 and 995 Ma, followed by adakitic magmatism and oceanic slab melting at 945–920 Ma and 772 Ma. Magmatism during this stage is not recorded in the western to central Dronning Maud Land. Moreover, the exposure of an adakitic equivalent continues at the farther eastern side of the Sor Rondane Mountains. This suggests that the tectonic framework of the Sor Rondane Mountains, eastern Dronning Maud Land, is different from the western to central Dronning Maud Land.

Archaean metasedimentary sequences of the Chitradurga Schist Belt in Western Dharwar Craton were reassessed in terms of their protoliths, potential timing of deposition and metamorphic events along with metamorphic conditions. Existing geological and stratigraphic constraints and our field observations suggest that the oldest supracrustal sequence of the Sargur Group, which occurs as enclaves in Peninsular Gneiss, is overlain by the Dharwar Supergroup consisting of lower Bababudan and upper Chitradurga Groups. In the Chitradurga Schist Belt, the metamorphic conditions of each stratigraphic unit are distinct, with most prominent difference observed in the Chitradurga Group. The lower unit of this group are metamorphosed under biotite-muscovite grade, whereas the upper unit at chlorite-muscovite grade. Detrital zircon U–Pb dates obtained by ion microprobe analyses suggest 3.14 Ga and 3.22–2.92 Ga for the youngest protolith's magmatic ages, which constrain the oldest age limit of deposition of Bababudan Group and Lower Unit of Chitradurga Group, respectively. The depositional age of Upper Unit of Chitradurga Schist Belt can be bracketed by 2.68 Ga magmatic zircon ages from meta-rhyolite and 2.63 Ga magmatic detrital zircon age of the overlying sandstone that are significantly younger than the Lower Unit. Monazite U–Th–Pb ages are similar for both Lower and Upper Units of the Chitradurga Group (∼c. 2.4 Ga) but are significantly younger than those of the underlying Bababudan and Sargur Groups (∼c. 3.1 Ga). Combined zircon and monazite data imply that the continuous or composite Mesoarchaean-Neoarchaean supracrustal sequences of the Chitradurga Group are metamorphosed together at the latest Archaean-early Proterozoic. These regional metamorphic ages are not detected in the underlying Bababudan and Sargur Groups, as well as the basement Peninsular Gneiss. Contrasting depositional and metamorphic history in coherent Mesoarchaean and Neoarchaean strata in the Chitradurga Schist Belt have important implications for the comparison with the well-established sedimentary sequences of similar ages in the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons. The protolith and metamorphic ages of the Dharwar Supergroup, when compared with available similar information from the surrounding Archaean cratons in India, Madagascar, and East Antarctica, testify the probable Archaean connection, and give clues to the formation of deep to shallow Archaean crust.

Kennicutt, M.C. et. al.-- 17 pages, 3 figures, The Antarctic Roadmap Challenges (ARC) project identified critical requirements to deliver high priority Antarctic research in the 21st century. The ARC project addressed the challenges of enabling technologies, facilitating access, providing logistics and infrastructure, and capitalizing on international co-operation. Technological requirements include: i) innovative automated in situ observing systems, sensors and interoperable platforms (including power demands), ii) realistic and holistic numerical models, iii) enhanced remote sensing and sensors, iv) expanded sample collection and retrieval technologies, and v) greater cyber-infrastructure to process ‘big data’ collection, transmission and analyses while promoting data accessibility. These technologies must be widely available, performance and reliability must be improved and technologies used elsewhere must be applied to the Antarctic. Considerable Antarctic research is field-based, making access to vital geographical targets essential. Future research will require continent- and ocean-wide environmentally responsible access to coastal and interior Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Year-round access is indispensable. The cost of future Antarctic science is great but there are opportunities for all to participate commensurate with national resources, expertise and interests. The scope of future Antarctic research will necessitate enhanced and inventive interdisciplinary and international collaborations. The full promise of Antarctic science will only be realized if nations act together, The authors recognize the financial support that made the Scan and ARC possible. SUMMARYThe prohibition of commercial mineral resource extraction through the Antarctic Treaty System has removed one significant source of potential damage to Antarctica's geological and geomorphological values. However, given the on-going increase in Antarctic tourism and scientific footprint, some high-quality geological features may be vulnerable to human impact, such as damage due to the construction of logistical facilities, unregulated collection of geological specimens or oversampling for scientific purposes. The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty puts in place a framework for the protection of Antarctica's environmental, scientific, historic, wilderness and aesthetic values. However, the Antarctic Protected Area system is still immature and further implementation of existing management tools may be required to protect the diverse range of vulnerabilities, qualities and spatial scales represented in the geology and geomorphology of the continent. At sites where high-quality mineralogical or palaeontological specimens exist in limited quantities, considerations of how best to prevent oversampling and manage access to remaining material may be supported by assessment of cumulative impacts. Examination of the level of Antarctic specimen loans from a selection of national geological collections suggested that existing publically accessible geological collections could be better utilized, which could reduce environmental impact and oversampling at vulnerable Antarctic sites.

U–Pb ages of detrital zircons and white mica K–Ar ages are obtained from two psammitic schists from the western and eastern units of the Sanbagawa Metamorphic Belt located in the Sakuma–Tenryu area. The detrital zircons in the sample from the western unit (T1) show an age cluster around 95 Ma, and the youngest age in the detrital zircons is 94.0 ± 0.6 Ma. The detrital zircons in the sample from the eastern unit (T5) show a main age cluster in the Late Cretaceous with some older ages, and the youngest age in the detrital zircons is 72.8 ± 0.9 Ma. The youngest zircon ages restrict the older limit of the depositional ages of each sample. White mica K–Ar ages of T1 and T5 are 69.8 ± 1.5 Ma and 56.1 ± 1.2 Ma, respectively, which indicate the age of exhumation and restrict the younger limit on the depositional age of each sample. The results show that the western and eastern units were different in their depositional and exhumation ages, suggesting the episodic subduction and exhumation of the Sanbagawa Belt in the Sakuma–Tenryu area. These results also suggest simultaneous existence of subduction and exhumation paths of metamorphic rocks in the high-P/T Sanbagawa Metamorphic Belt.

Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) commenced on the occasion of International Geophysical Year in 1957–1958. Syowa Station, the primary station for JARE operations, is located along the northeastern coastal region of Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica (69° 00′S, 39° 35′E), and was opened on 29 January 1957. Since then, JARE have been carrying out research in various fields of earth and planetary sciences and life science. Astronomical science, however, has not been popular in Antarctica. In 1995, JARE established a new inland station, Dome Fuji Station (77° 19′S, 39° 42′E), which, at 3,810 m a.s.l., is located on one of major domes of the Antarctic ice sheet, some 1,000 km south of Syowa. The climatic conditions at Dome Fuji are harsh, with an annual average air temperature of −54°C, and a recorded minimum of −79°C. In 2007, JARE completed scientific drilling to obtain ice core samples of the Antarctic ice sheet reaching 3,050 m in depth. These ice cores record environmental conditions of the earth extending back some 720,000 B.P. In recent years, it is widely known that the high-altitude environment of inland Antarctica is suitable for astronomical observations and the Japanese astronomy community identified Dome Fuji Station as a potential candidate for a future astronomical observatory. In this article, the history of Japanese Antarctic activities are described in terms of access to the inland plateau of the Antarctic continent. The general scheme and future plans of science objectives and logistics of JARE will also be introduced.

U–Pb zircon geochronology of 6 samples collected from Fyfe Hills (2 felsic orthogneisses and 1 quartzo-feldspathic gneiss) and Mt. Cronus (1 quartzo-feldspathic gneiss and 2 quartzites) in the western part of the Napier Complex, East Antarctica, revealed an Archaean–Proterozoic history ranging from 3128 to 1824 Ma. The absence of ancient evidence > 3800–3600 Ma indicates that these ages were not always dominant in these two areas. The 3128–2580 Ma protolith ages are similar to those of other areas (e.g., Mt. Riiser-Larsen, Tonagh Island), while the magmatic protolith age of 2741 Ma obtained for the Fyfe Hills orthogneiss is a new component of the Archaean magmatic protolith in the Napier Complex. Metamorphic overgrowth or recrystallized zircons yielded systematic disconformable ages for both Fyfe Hills (> 2518 Ma) and Mt. Cronus (~ 2490 Ma). The presence of 2580 Ma inherited zircons provides important constraints that place the ultrahigh temperature metamorphic peak later than 2580 Ma. The post metamorphic ages suggest local fluid infiltration or local deformation event(s).

Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb zircon age dating was applied to several types of granulites and gneisses from the Lewisian Complex in South Harris, NW Scotland, to clarify the timing of Palaeoproterozoic tectono-thermal events. For comparison, monazite was dated using the chemical Th–U–total Pb isochron method (CHIME). The obtained U–Pb zircon age data were evaluated under the constrains of the modal amount of constituent minerals and whole-rock compositions of analysed samples, the zircon internal texture based on Th/U ratios, and the monazite CHIME ages. Zircons in three samples, characterised by zoned overgrowth rims, sector-zoned grains, and structureless high-U cores, yielded concordant ages of approximately 1900 Ma (1909 ± 3 Ma, 1899 ± 10, and 1888 ± 15 Ma, respectively). The age of 1899 ± 10 Ma, obtained from melanocratic granulite (garnet and kyanite/sillimanite: 76–91 vol.%), is interpreted to represent the timing of zircon crystallisation prior to the formation of restitic garnet and kyanite/sillimanite. Therefore, the age of ∼1900 Ma is proposed to represent the timing of early metamorphism, close to the thermal peak (M1). In the leucocratic gneiss (sample 93921-7), the age population at 1868 ± 35 Ma obtained from low-U and low-Th overgrowth rims represents a second stage of zircon growth from crystallising anatectic melt (M3), whereas the high-U cores represent the timing of zircon growth and recrystallisation prior to anatexis. Monazites from two leucocratic gneisses yield a relatively narrow range of CHIME ages: 1858 ± 7 Ma and 1840 ± 7 Ma. These ages probably represent the timing of zircon and monazite crystallisation from partial melt and resetting of the U–Th–Pb system. These results suggest that the timing of zircon formation was controlled by metamorphic processes, such as restite formation and crystallisation from partial melt.

We applied SHRIMP zircon U-Pb age dating to ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) sapphirine-bearing orthopyroxene garnet (SOG) granulite and biotite-hornblende (Bt-Hbl) gneiss in the Schirmacher Hills, East Antarctica. In the Bt-Hbl gneiss, concordant ages of and Ma were obtained from zircon overgrowth rims and zircon cores, with oscillatory and irregular zoning, respectively. The zircon overgrowth rims ( Ma) with low Th/U ratios from the Bt-Hbl gneiss are interpreted as having a metamorphic origin. Oscillatory-zoned and/or irregularly zoned zircon cores may have crystallized during an igneous event at Ma; 800-Ma igneous events have not previously been recognized in central Dronning Maud Land (DML) inland nunatak. Zircons in the SOG granulite yielded a concordant age of Ma, using analyses of sector-zoned and simple-zoned grains. Conventional alkali-catalyzed BDF production processes have a serious problem because the settling of liquid dispersions after transesterification is slow and requires almost one day. The present study suggests a significant improvement using a simple method called PITE, i.e., strong agitation during transesterification in a fully baffled stirring vessel. The PITE method can invert the dispersions from an alcohol-in-oil (A/O) to an O/A type which settles within 20 seconds. The transesterification reaction immediately reaches its equilibrium after phase inversion, in which the reaction time is less than 2 min. It is estimated from this result that conventional batch-wise BDF production using a 100 L vessel can be replaced by an equivalent continuous operation with a 0.15 L vessel.

日豪両国間における南極研究の情報交換ならびに将来への協力関係の更なる発展と強化に資する目的で日豪南極研究協力体制に関するワークショップが2008年6月12日、オーストラリア南極局から4名、国立極地研究所から10数名の研究者の参加のもと開催された。研究協力、プロジェクトの検討及びその合意に向けて、さらにそれを両国の研究計画に反映させるためには、さらなる実務レベルでの話し合いが必要であるとの認識で一致した。本ワークショップは2009年前半までに日豪南極研究合同セミナーを開催する必要がある旨合意した。, A workshop on future Australian-Japanese Antarctic cooperation was held on 12 June 2008 to exchange scientific information and to initiate a dialog to explore the way forward to further enhance and strengthen collaboration in Antarctic science between the two nations. The workshop was attended by four Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) scientists and more than ten National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) scientists. Through a series of presentations detailing both countries' projects, and the following discussion, the workshop agreed that there are compelling reasons for holding a joint seminar between Australia and Japan by early next year to prioritize and agree to areas of collaboration, and outline the sorts of projects to be reflected in research plans of both countries.

Analysis of new lithological, structural, metamorphic and geochronological data from extensive mapping in Mozambique permits recognition of two distinct crustal blocks separated by the Lurio Belt shear zone. Extrapolation of the Mozambique data to adjacent areas in Sri Lanka and Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica permits the recognition of similar crustal blocks and allows the interpretation that the various blocks in Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Antarctica were once part of a mega-nappe, forming part of northern Gondwana, which was thrust-faulted c. 600 km over southern Gondwana during amalgamation of Gondwana at c. 590–550 Ma. The data suggest a deeper level of erosion in southern Africa compared with Antarctica. It is possible that this thrust domain extends, through the Zambezi Belt or Valley, as far west as the Damara Orogen in Namibia with the Naukluft nappes in Namibia, the Makuti Group, the Masoso Suite in the Rushinga area and the Urungwe klippen in northern Zimbabwe, fitting the mega-nappe pattern. Erosional products of the mountain belt are now represented by 700–400 Ma age detrital zircons present in the various sandstone formations of the Transantarctic Mountains, their correlatives in Australia, as well as the Urfjell Group (western Dronning Maud Land) and probably the Natal Group in South Africa.

Fluids (fluorine, chlorine, and OH) in accessory minerals (apatite, titanite and allanite) of Pan-African granitoids (Group-I granitoids, Group-II granitoids and Mefjell Plutonic Complex) from the Sor Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica were precisely measured by an electronic microprobe analyzer in this study. Apatites in the granites have commonly high fluorine contents. However, fluorine contents from the Group-I, Group-II granitoids and Mefjell Plutonic Complex (MPC) are of important variation, which F contents (3.21∼7.20 wt%) in apatite from the Group-II granitoids are much higher than those from the Group-I granitoids (1.22∼3.60 wt%) and the MPC (3.21∼4.11 wt%). Titanite in the MPC has a low fluorine content (0.23∼0.50 wt%), being less than those in the Group-I granitoids (2.28 wt%) and Group-II granitoids (1.85∼2.78 wt%). Fluorine in allanite in the Group-II granitoids seems to have much lower contents than those from the Group-I granitoids and the MPC. Higher fluorine contents in the titanite from the Group-II granitoids may be mainly controlled by late-magmatic fluid-rock interaction processes associated with melt, but may not be indicative of original magma contents based on its petrographic feature. Due to very lower chlorine contents from all of accessory minerals, the authors suggest that titanite and apatite with higher fluorine contents in the Group-II granitoids have much lower H2O (OH) contents compared with those in the Group-I granitoids according to the partition among (F, Cl, OH). Fluorine contents in whole-rock samples show a variation from the higher in the Group-I granitoids to the lower in the Group-II granitoids and the MPC, which are consistent with the changes of those from the biotite and hornblende as well as fluorite occurred in the Group-I granitoids reported previously. Based on the above study of fluorine in accessory minerals and combined with the previous fluorine contents from biotites and hornblendes, the authors suggest that apatites and titanites with higher F contents in the Group-II granitoids and the MPC may not be an indicator of higher fluorine contents in whole-rock, which reflect fluorine contents in magma sources and/or late-thermal activity. Higher fluorine contents in apatite, titanite and allanite may be an additional evidence of A-type affinity.
