Understanding the high-frequency transport characteristics of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is crucial for the development of fast-operating spintronics memories and radio frequency devices. Here, we present the study of frequency-dependent capacitive current effect in CoFeB/MgO-based MTJs and its influence on magnetization dynamics using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect technique. In our device operating at gigahertz frequencies, we find a large displacement current of the order of mA's, which does not break the tunnel barrier of the MTJ. Importantly, this current generates an Oersted field and spin-orbit torque, inducing magnetization dynamics. Our discovery holds promise for building robust MTJ devices operating under high current conditions, also highlighting the significance of capacitive impedance in high frequency magnetotransport techniques.

Artificial multiferroics consist of two types of ferroic materials, typically a ferroelectric and ferromagnet, often coupled interfacially by magnetostriction induced by the lattice elongations in the ferroelectric. In BaTiO3 the magnitude of strain induced by these elongations is heavily temperature dependent, varying greatly between each of the polar crystal phases and exerting a huge influence over the properties of a coupled magnetic film. Here we demonstrate that temperature, and thus strain, is an effective means of controlling the magnetic anisotropy in BaTiO3(111)/CoFeB heterostructures. We investigate the three polar phases of BaTiO3: tetragonal (T) at room temperature, orthorhombic (O) below 280 K and rhombohedral (R) below 190 K, across a total range of 77 K to 420 K. We find two distinct responses; a step-like change in the anisotropy across the low-temperature phase transitions, and a sharp high-temperature reduction around the ferroelectric Curie temperature, measured from hard axis hysteresis loops. Using our measurements of this anisotropy strength we are then able to show by micromagnetic simulation the behaviour of all possible magnetic domain wall states and determine their scaling as a function of temperature. The most significant changes occur in the head-to-head domain wall states, with a maximum change of 210 nm predicted across the entire range effectively doubling the size of the domain wall as compared to room temperature. Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets represent one of the most promising horizons for energy-efficient spintronic applications because their broad range of electronic, magnetic and topological properties. Of particular interest is the control of the magnetic properties of 2D materials by femtosecond laser pulses which can provide a real path for low-power consumption device platforms in data storage industries. However, little is known about the interplay between light and spin properties in vdW layers. Here, combining large-scale spin dynamics simulations including biquadratic exchange interactions and wide-field Kerr microscopy (WFKM), we show that ultrafast laser excitation can not only generate different type of spin textures in CrGeTe$_3$ vdW magnets but also induce a reversible transformation between them in a toggle-switch mechanism. Our calculations show that skyrmions, anti-skyrmions, skyrmioniums and stripe domains can be generated via high-intense laser pulses within the picosecond regime. The effect is tunable with the laser energy where different spin behaviours can be selected, such as fast demagnetisation process ($\sim$250 fs) important for information technologies. The phase transformation between the different topological spin textures is obtained as additional laser pulses are applied to the system where the polarisation and final state of the spins can be controlled by external magnetic fields. We experimentally confirmed the creation, manipulation and toggle switching phenomena in CrGeTe$_3$ due to the unique aspect of laser-induced heating of electrons. Our results indicate laser-driven spin textures on 2D magnets as a pathway towards ultrafast reconfigurable architecture at the atomistic level.

We report optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) measurements of an ensemble of spin-1 negatively charged boron vacancies in hexagonal boron nitride. The photoluminescence decay rates are spin-dependent, with inter-system crossing rates of $1.02~\mathrm{ns^{-1}}$ and $2.03~\mathrm{ns^{-1}}$ for the $m_s=0$ and $m_s=\pm 1$ states, respectively. Time-gating the photoluminescence enhances the ODMR contrast by discriminating between different decay rates. This is particularly effective for detecting the spin of the optically excited state, where a zero-field splitting of $\vert D_{ES}\vert=2.09~\mathrm{GHz}$ is measured. The magnetic field dependence of the time-gated photoluminescence exhibits dips corresponding to the Ground (GSLAC) and excited-state (ESLAC) anti-crossings. Additional dips corresponding to anti-crossings with nearby spin-1/2 parasitic impurities are also observed. The ESLAC dip is sensitive to the angle of the external magnetic field. Comparison to a model suggests that the anti-crossings are mediated by the interaction with nuclear spins, and allow an estimate of the ratio of the spin-dependent relaxation rates from the singlet back into the triplet ground state of $\kappa_0/\kappa_1=0.34$. This work provides important spectroscopic signatures of the boron vacancy, and information on the spin pumping and read-out dynamics.

The curling spin wave modes of a ferromagnetic vortex confined to a microscale disc have been directly imaged in response to a microwave field excitation using time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy. Micromagnetic simulations have been used to explore the interaction of gyrotropic vortex core dynamics with the curling modes observed in the region of circulating in-plane magnetization. Hybridization of the fundamental gyrotropic mode with the degenerate, lowest-frequency, azimuthal modes has previously been reported to lead to their splitting and counter propagating motion, as we observe in our spectra and measured images. The curling nature of the modes can be ascribed to asymmetry in the static and dynamic magnetization across the disc thickness, but here we also present evidence that spiral spin waves emitted by the core can influence the spatial character of higher frequency curling modes for which hybridization is only permitted with gyrotropic modes of the same sense of azimuthal motion. While it is challenging to identify if such modes are truly hybridized from the mode dispersion in a confined disc, our simulations reveal that spiral spin waves from the core may act as mediators of the interaction between the core dynamics and azimuthal modes. At higher frequency, modes with radial character only do not exhibit marked curling, but instead show evidence of interaction with spin waves generated at the edge of the disc. The measured spatio-temporal character of the observed curling modes is accurately reproduced by our simulations, which reveal the emission of propagating short-wavelength spiral spin waves from both core and edge regions of the disc. Our simulations suggest that the propagating modes are not inconsequential, but may play a role in the dynamic overlap required for hybridization of modes of the core and in-plane magnetised regions., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moir\'e periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the ferromagnet. We attribute this to spin-dependent interlayer charge transfer occurring on timescales between the exciton and trion radiative lifetimes. Going further, we uncover by both the magneto-optical Kerr effect and photoluminescence a domain-like spatial topography of contrasting valley polarization, which we infer to be labyrinthine or otherwise highly intricate, with features smaller than 400 nm corresponding to our optical resolution. Our findings offer a unique insight into the interplay between short-lived valley excitons and spin-dependent interlayer tunnelling, while also highlighting MoSe$_2$ as a promising candidate to optically interface with exotic spin textures in van der Waals structures.

Injection of a radio frequency (RF) current was used to phase lock the SHNO to the TRSKM. The out of plane magnetization was detected by means of the polar magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE). However, longitudinal MOKE images were dominated by an artifact arising from the edges of the Au NCs. Time resolved imaging revealed the simultaneous excitation of a non-linear `bullet' mode at the centre of the device, once the DC current exceeded a threshold value, and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) induced by the RF current. However, the FMR response observed for sub-critical DC current values exhibits an amplitude minimum at the centre, which is attributed to spreading of the RF spin current due to the reactance of the device structure. This FMR response can be subtracted to yield images of the bullet mode. As the DC current is increased above threshold, the bullet mode appears to increase in size, suggesting increased translational motion. The reduced spatial overlap of the bullet and FMR modes, and this putative translational motion, may impede the injection locking and contribute to the reduced locking range observed within NC-SHNO devices. This illustrates a more general need to control the geometry of an injection-locked oscillator so that the autonomous dynamics of the oscillator exhibit strong spatial overlap with those resulting from the injected signal.

Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) was used to study precessional magnetization dynamics induced by a radio frequency (RF) current within a Al$_2$O$_3$/Py(5 nm)/Pt(6 nm)/Au(150 nm) spin Hall nano-oscillator structure. The Au layer was formed into two needle-shaped electrical contacts that concentrated the current in the centre of a Py/Pt mesa of 4 $\mu$m diameter. Due to the spin Hall effect, current within the Pt layer drives a spin current into the Py layer, exerting a spin transfer torque (STT). By injecting RF current, and exploiting the phase-sensitivity of TRSKM and the symmetry of the device structure, the STT and Oersted field torques have been separated and spatially mapped. The STT and torque due to the in-plane Oersted field are observed to exhibit minima at the device centre that is ascribed to spreading of RF current that is not observed for DC current. Torques associated with the RF current may destabilise the position of the self-localised bullet mode excited by the DC current, and inhibit injection locking. The present study demonstrates the need to characterise both DC and RF current distributions carefully.

Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) is a powerful technique for the investigation of picosecond magnetization dynamics at sub-micron length scales by means of the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The spatial resolution of conventional (focused) Kerr microscopy using a microscope objective lens is determined by the optical diffraction limit so that the nanoscale character of the magnetization dynamics is lost. Here we present a platform to overcome this limitation by means of a near-field TRSKM that incorporates an atomic force microscope (AFM) with optical access to a metallic AFM probe with a nanoscale aperture at its tip. We demonstrate the near-field capability of the instrument through the comparison of time-resolved polar Kerr images of magnetization dynamics within a microscale NiFe rectangle acquired using both near-field and focused TRSKM techniques at a wavelength of 800 nm. The flux-closure domain state of the in-plane equilibrium magnetization provided the maximum possible dynamic polar Kerr contrast across the central domain wall, and enabled an assessment of the magneto-optical spatial resolution of each technique. Line profiles extracted from the Kerr images demonstrate that the near-field spatial resolution was enhanced with respect to that of the focused Kerr images. Furthermore, the near-field polar Kerr signal (~1 mdeg) was more than half that of the focused Kerr signal, despite the potential loss of probe light due to internal reflections within the AFM tip. We have confirmed the near-field operation by exploring the influence of the tip-sample separation, and have determined the spatial resolution to be ~550 nm for an aperture with a sub-wavelength diameter of 400 nm. Super-harmonic injection locking of single nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) subject to a small microwave current has been explored. Frequency locking was observed up to the fourth harmonic of the STVO fundamental frequency $f_{0}$ in microwave magneto-electronic measurements. The large frequency tunability of the STVO with respect to $f_{0}$ allowed the device to be locked to multiple sub-harmonics of the microwave frequency $f_{RF}$, or to the same sub-harmonic over a wide range of $f_{RF}$ by tuning the DC current. In general, analysis of the locking range, linewidth, and amplitude showed that the locking efficiency decreased as the harmonic number increased, as expected for harmonic synchronization of a non-linear oscillator. Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) revealed significant differences in the spatial character of the magnetization dynamics of states locked to the fundamental and harmonic frequencies, suggesting significant differences in the core trajectories within the same device. Super-harmonic injection locking of a NC-STVO may open up possibilities for devices such as nanoscale frequency dividers, while differences in the core trajectory may allow mutual synchronisation to be achieved in multi-oscillator networks by tuning the spatial character of the dynamics within shared magnetic layers., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy has been used to directly image the magnetization dynamics of nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) when phase-locked to an injected microwave (RF) current. The Kerr images reveal free layer magnetization dynamics that extend outside the NC footprint, where they cannot be detected electrically, but which are crucial to phase-lock STVOs that share common magnetic layers. For a single NC, dynamics were observed not only when the STVO frequency was fully locked to that of the RF current, but also for a partially locked state characterized by periodic changes in the core trajectory at the RF frequency. For a pair of NCs, images reveal the spatial character of dynamics that electrical measurements show to have enhanced amplitude and reduced linewidth. Insight gained from these images may improve understanding of the conditions required for mutual phase-locking of multiple STVOs, and hence enhanced microwave power emission., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

By synchronizing a microwave waveform with the synchrotron x-ray pulses, we use the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of the Py (Ni81Fe19) layer in a Py/Cu/Cu75Mn25/Cu/Co multilayer to pump a pure spin current into the Cu75Mn25 spacer layer, and then directly probe the spin current in the Cu75Mn25 layer by a time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). This element-specific pump-probe measurement unambiguously identifies the AC spin current in the Cu75Mn25 layer. In addition, phase resolved x-ray measurements reveal a characteristic bipolar phase behavior of the Co spins that is a fingerprint of spin-current driven spin precession.

We have observed the eigenmodes of coupled transverse domain walls in a pair of ferromagnetic nanowires. Although the pair is coupled magnetostatically, its spectrum is determined by a combination of pinning by edge roughness and dipolar coupling of the two walls. Because the corresponding energy scales are comparable, the coupling can be observed only at the smallest wire separations. A model of the coupled wall dynamics reproduces the experiment quantitatively, allowing for comparisons with the estimated pinning and domain wall coupling energies. We have performed time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) measurements upon arrays of square ferromagnetic nano-elements of different size and for a range of bias fields. The experimental results were compared to micromagnetic simulations of model arrays in order to understand the non-uniform precessional dynamics within the elements. In the experimental spectra two branches of excited modes were observed to co-exist above a particular bias field. Below the so-called crossover field, the higher frequency branch was observed to vanish. Micromagnetic simulations and Fourier imaging revealed that modes from the higher frequency branch had large amplitude at the center of the element where the effective field was parallel to the bias field and the static magnetization. Modes from the lower frequency branch had large amplitude near the edges of the element perpendicular to the bias field. The simulations revealed significant canting of the static magnetization and the effective field away from the direction of the bias field in the edge regions. For the smallest element sizes and/or at low bias field values the effective field was found to become anti-parallel to the static magnetization. The simulations revealed that the majority of the modes were de-localized with finite amplitude throughout the element, while the spatial character of a mode was found to be correlated with the spatial variation of the total effective field and the static magnetization state. The simulations also revealed that the frequencies of the edge modes are strongly affected by the spatial distribution of the static magnetization state both within an element and within its nearest neighbors.
