Objective: The study examined the links between health-related indicators, adult resilience, and burnout.Method: The data were collected during two waves of the longitudinal study (in 2004-05, N=98, and 2011-12, N=88, respectively). Health behaviour, self-rated health (SRH), Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC), and Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure (SMBM) were measured. Results: The comprehensibility of SOC and physical fatigue of SMBM as measured in wave 2 were determined by SRH as measured in wave 1. In the cross-sectional part, the meaningfulness of SOC was related to SRH, and alcohol consumption in wave 1. The comprehensibility of SOC was related to SRH in wave 2.Conclusion: SOC is well known to have effect on health. However, the results show that self-reported health had effect on the comprehensibility of SOC. Our data also support the finding that the effect of SRH on burnout is stronger than the effect of burnout on SRH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In last decades, there is increasing empirical evidence on the significant links between religiosity/ spirituality (R/S) and health. Empirical findings have identified both religiosity and spirituality as a potential health resources and have stimulated interest within psychology on the role of these fenomena in physical and mental health. The present review provides examination of this field of research and adresses some related methodological and conceptual issues. Special attention is paid to the definitions and development of the two concepts (religiosity/ spirituality), the development of measurement, epidemiological evidence linking R/S to morbidity, mortality and mental health and issue of causality and possible psychological mediators or moderators of R/S on health outcomes. Particular focus of this review concerns with the issue how specific factors influence health outcomes. Although the majority of studies report positive association between measures of religiosity/ spirituality and overall health via physiological, psychological, social and behavioral mechanisms, contradicting findings are common and two or more opposing conclusion are not rare. The relation between variables appears far more complex. Which specific R/S factors enhance health and well-being remains unclear. The study discusses what mechanisms might explain a relation and what might be possible diference in these associations between members of various demografical, cultural and religious groups. Last it concerns with construct spirituality as usefull and clinically relevant approach in medical settings. For the future research the need to improve research designs and measurement as well as to clarify conceptualizations of religious and spiritual factors remains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overview study brings closer one of possible solutions of complicated relation of psychological research to psychological practice, the approach called evidence-based psychology. It is inspired by the analogical effort in medicine but in psychology it gains specific nuances. The study mentions the historical roots, the birth, and the contemporary form of evidence-based medicine. It shows how this approach inspired one by one the particular psychological fields on the example of American Psychological Association. Different levels of application are characterized, starting by evidence-based policy to empirically based intervention. Most attention is paid to evidence- based psychological practice. Referring to the work of Hoagwood and Johnson it brings closer five emerging approaches: 1. The academic approach, 2. Empirically validated approach,3. Evidence-based therapy, 4. Multidisciplinary approach, 5. School psychological approach. Two of three components of evidence-based practice are analyzed in detail: research evidence and psychologist's expertise. In the conclusion, weak points and problems emerging during the application of evidence-based psychology are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WELL-being , *QUALITY of life , *NURSES , *MEDICAL care , *WAGES , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *SOCIAL psychology , *PSYCHOSOCIAL factors - Abstract
Objectives. The presented paper is focused on the issue of well-being, which is considered as one of the most important sources of the quality of life. The concept of well-being is understood as the combination of feeling good and functioning effectively, and paper is related to the specific features of the sense of personal well-being and satisfaction with life in a sample of Czech nurses, the largest group in health care that is active in all aspects of the health care system. Sample and setting. A sample of 337 (mostly) Czech nurses (average age 34 years) has been surveyed with a set of questionnaires (Satisfaction with Life Scale, Anamnesis questionnaire; Social Readjustment Rating Scale; a list of stressful items and ways of coping with stress). Research questions and hypotheses. It was supposed that the most important stressors for nurses are overburdening, tiredness and low level of financial compensation. The majority of the sample of nurses will show the high-risk level of life events score. The substance of the influence of stressors on our sample of nurses is connected with the influence of age and life events. Statistical analysis. Correlation analysis, factor, and regression analysis were employed. Results. Results show a considerably wide scope of stressors that were considered important by our sample of nurses. Stressors from the area of interpersonal relationships, inadequate financial assessment, large work load (or more precisely overburdening) and tiredness connected with it were discovered. As for the results dealing with the sphere of life events, it is obvious that more than one half of the studied sample (55.5 %) show non-risk dynamics of life, filled by life events within the frame of the evaluated period of twelve months and with a resulting score up to 150 points, but 16.2 % nurses fall into the range from 150 - 199 pofints, 19.2 % into the range from 200 - 299 points, which is a very high level, showing the demanding level of lie dynamics of almost one fifth of the studied sample, and 9.1 % of nurses shows the level of this dynamics even in the range over 300 points. The results of further statistical procedures (factor and regression analyses) showed that nurses within our sample are extremely demanding, both from the point of view of the distribution of stressors that are connected with their work, and from the point of view of mutual relations between the influence of stressors, age and life events. Study limitations. The results of the study are restricted by the scope of the studied sample, its demographic features, but also by the methods used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the design, realization, and results of prospectively designed two-wave study the goal of which was to verify the potential connections of burnout, selected psychosocial characteristics and main known risks of cardiovascular diseases in the sample of economicaly active Czech men and women. A part of the project was the intervention oriented to lower the incidence of risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and burnout syndrome. The next aim of the project was to assess the influence of education in subjects on decreasing the risks of cardiovascular diseases (and burnout). The sample (78 persons, 64 women, 14 men; mean age 48,4; SD 11,6; minimum age 22, maximum age 67) was acquired by addressing the Czech and abroad firms, companies, and institutions. The changes in biochemical variables due to the intervention, the decrease of global cholesterol and LDL cholesterol can be considered as a very positive finding. The changes in psychological variables can also be considered as favourable: A set of risk characteristics decreased and the level of perceived social support that represents the protective factor increased. The results imply that the lipids concentration and its metabolism are relatively very sensitive to personality and psychosocial characteristics that can be generally considered as risky for health. The particular variables came out as predictors less often than factors that represented several variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NURSING , *SMOKING , *NURSES , *WOMEN smokejumpers , *WELL-being , *PROFESSIONALISM , *SMOKING in the workplace , *QUALITY of life , *SOCIAL history - Abstract
The paper deals with specific aspects of demands of the nurse profession, especially from the aspect of styles of coping with these demands including the smoking. The authors bring first the overview of smoking prevalence in nurses in the Czech Republic in comparison with smoking prevalence in women in the Czech population and with some analogous data from abroad. The smoking prevalence in Czech nurses is higher than smoking prevalence in women in the Czech population. The empirical part brings the information about the results of the questionnaire survey in the sample of 337 respondents, 329 women and 8 men, working as nurses. In the sample, 207 non-smokers (61.4 %) and 130 smokers (38.6 %) were identified. The results of the survey oriented to assessment of the level and structure of well-being, life events, locus of control and smoking habits showed that smoking in respondents- smokers matches the level between the moderate and the middle addiction. The average time of smoking is 14.35 years, the most frequent data is 10 years, and the average number of cigarettes was 11.7 a day. The levels on the scale of social re-adjustment (life events) differ significantly in disadvantage of smokers, in the level of well-being of smokers and non-smokers no significant difference was found. The average value of internal locus of control assessed by the visual analogous scale is slightly lower in the group of smokers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was carried out as a part of international study addressing the well-being of university students. The results of the Czech sample (N=535) brought some interesting relations of well-being to self-determining needs (competence, autonomy, relationality) to conformity, safety, and benevolence of Schwartz value survey and to independency in self-construal scale. The factor formed by items assessing well-being and associated characteristics is independent on factor formed by values constituting civic values, and on factor saturated by items concerning the social career. Objectives. The aim of the study was to test the psychometric properties of Czech version of the Shirom Melamed Burnout Measure (SMBM). Although this instrument has been translated to Czech language and used before, its validity has not yet been tested. Sample and settings. Representative sample of Czech working population has been used. The predefined quotas were: gender, age, education attained, size of city they currently live in and the region they come from. Combination of questioning methods was used: direct questioning for older population (50+) and online questionnaire for 25-50 years of age. Hypothesis. The hypothesis to prove was that Czech version of SMBM has high internal consistency. The second hypothesis was that Czech SMBM has three factors (like the English version) and these factors are: cognitive, physical and emotional burnout. Statistical analyses. In order to test hypothesis regarding the internal consistency, the Cronbach's alpha was determined. In order to test the structure of the test, confirmatory factor analysis and IRT were employed. Results. Cronbach's alpha and factor analysis pointed to high internal consistency and reliability of Czech version of SMBM. Czech version of SMBM is thus considered as reliable psychometric tool and the results of this study are comparable to other available research. Study limitation. Due to the fact that online questioning for larger part of the study sample was used, certain population might have been missed. The design of the study was crosssectional which bears another problem: it is not possible to determine whether it was only respondents, current situation or whether he/she has been suffering from burnout symptoms for a longer period of time. Objectives. The present longitudinal study aims to find the links between (1) toddler temperament and adult resilience, and (2) recollections about parental styles and adult resilience among participants of longitudinal study. Sample and setting. The data from longitudinal project "Mental development of school children from various social environments" conducted in Brno (since 1961) and in Prague (since 1956) were employed in the study (N=76 and N=86, respectively). Resilience was indexed here as Sense of Coherence (SOC). The toddler temperament was assessed using Brunet–Lézin test. Recollected interactions between parents and children (parenting styles) were measured using the Parent–Child Interactions Scale, The Social and Health Assessment (SAHA) questionnaire, with four aspects of parenting determined (parental involvement, parental warmth, parental control, and inconsistency of parenting). Statistical analysis. The correlational analysis and regression analysis were used in the study. Results. A positive relation between active/disinhibited temperament at 12-30 months of age and adult resilience has been found. Parenting style perceived as "inconsistent" relates negatively to manageability scale and total score of Sense of Coherence. Parenting style "controlling" relates negatively to manageability of SOC. Perceived "involved" parenting relates positively to comprehensibility, manageability and total score of SOC. Perceived "warmth" parenting relates positively to comprehensibility, manageability and total score of SOC. Study limitations. The study is unable to find actual cause-and-effect links between actions of parents and adult resilience, as it worked only with recollection of parenting styles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This master thesis focuses on subjectively percieved quality of sleep and its connections - fatigue, daytime sleepiness and insomnia in older age. Attention is brought to psychological methods of sleep measurement in comparison with objective methods (polysomnography and actigraphy). Theoretical part is based on current scientific knowledge of sleep quality and deals with psychological factors that contribute to improvement or reduction of sleep quality in older age. In context with quality of sleep focus is aimed also at presence of insomnia in older age compared to younger age and possibilities of enhancing sleep quality. Overview of subjective and objective methods of measuring sleep quality and other sleep characteristics is part of the theoretical background. Empirical part of the thesis is divided into two sections. First section compares sleep quality, fatigue, daytime sleepiness and insomnia of younger and older adults. This research is based on following questionnaire data: PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), FSS (Fatigue Severity Scale), ESS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale) and ISI (Insomnia Severity Index). Second section of the research verifies the validity of psychological methods of measuring sleep quality - questionnaires PSQI, FSS, ESS, ISI and sleep diaries of older adults by...

Cognitive deficit presents a significant problem affecting the life of schizophrenia patients. Despite the variability of the deficit, which influences almost all cognitive domains, the most profound seems to be deficit in memory and executive functioning with direct impact on daily functioning of patients with schizophrenia. As the pharmacologic interventions do not seem to bring satisfying results, the cognitive remediation seems to bet the most effective way of intervention of the deficit. Efficacy of cognitive remediation approach was repeatedly confirmed on the level of structural and functional changes of the brain. Nevertheless, often discussed are the issues of ecological validity of cognitive remediation and its controversial ability of transfer of acquired abilities and skills into the real life. In this work, we present development of a new method potentially applicable in the remediation of deficit of declarative memory in schizophrenia patients designed in ecologically valid environment of virtual supermarket. In the first two pilot studies, we tested the functionality of the task in the healthy volunteers and we compared their performance in the virtual task with the results in standard psychological memory tests. After considering the findings from the pilot studies, we verified the...

Successful aging is increasingly topical issue given the rapidly aging population and it is therefore crucial to deal with the way the old people adapt to the coming age, and whether there is some way we can be prepared for it. Model coping with life's problems - selection, optimization and compensation is a lifelong adaptation strategy, which currently in old age leads to successful aging. Besides adaptation are important attitudes towards aging and old age, that have an impact on senior's self-esteem. The main goal of this thesis was to analyze attitudes towards age and the use of model coping with life problems in a sample of younger and older Czech seniors using questionnaires SOC and AAQ. The research had a qualitative aspect, which focused on mapping the topic of retirement planning and strategies for successful aging. It turned out that the younger and older seniors differ from each other only in the use of the strategy chosen selection, in other strategies there was no difference between age groups. In the area of attitudes to each other, age groups also did not differ. The results also show that between using SOC strategies and their own attitude to old age, there is no relationship. Seniors recommend to young people and to their peers to think of their health, maintain good relationships...

The goal of this thesis was to describe cognitive profile and rehabilitation of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients with ischemic stroke (IST). The theoretical introduction focuses on IST, the concept of MCI, neuropsychological test of cognitive deficits related to IST, and cognitive rehabilitation. The empirical part of the thesis comprises of two studies. The first study includes 64 patients with various types of brain lesions after first-ever stroke were examined within 3-6 months after hospital admission. All cognitive domains were impaired to the similar extend; the impairment quite severe, and ranged from 1.5 to 2.0 SD below the mean of the control group. The results showed that right hemisphere lesions were associated with visuospatial impairment whereas left hemisphere lesions were associated with language impairment. Also, it was examined which combination of tests differentiates best between patients from the experimental groups and the control group, and among individual experimental groups. In the second study, 68 patients were assessed in order to explore the effect of cognitive rehabilitation. The experimental group did not show significant increase in cognitive performance in comparison with the control group. It is necessary to develop and use sensitive and valid tests that...

This research study focuses on the connection between types of attachment (levels of anxiety and avoidance in a relationship) and drug addiction. We researched the levels of anxiety and avoidance in drug addicted patients in their relationships with their mothers and fathers, romantic partners and best friends and compared them with the levels of anxiety and avoidance in informants from a control group who were not addicted to drugs. We examined an experimental group of 103 addicted patients receiving treatment in a therapeutic community and 105 informants in a control group. The results of the research confirmed the hypothesis that drug addicted patients manifest significantly higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in relationships with mothers, fathers, romantic partners and best friends in comparison with the control group informants not addicted to drugs. Although the differences in all areas were substantial, illustrating the attachment typology proved to be problematic. While dividing the responses into quadrants does not consider natural variations of the responses, they were taken into account in both of the mentioned scales. We concluded that, in general, the addicted patients in the experimental group had distinctly lower scores in the security of the attachment to their mothers and...

Mgr. Zuzana Bílková Key mental features of the members of the armed forces for coping with conditions of high risk of losing one's life: Importance of social support among soldiers of the ISAF mission Abstract This thesis focuses on the topic of social support among soldiers in the ISAF mission. It was supposed that army environment is very specific in the area of social relationships in particular and so in the area of social support. Military mission is very demanding - soldiers face a real danger of their lives, they are limited in contact with their families, in the way of spending their free time. Therefore, some soldiers suffer from mental problems when they came back. This thesis examines a potential contribution of social support during the mission and deals with the question whether social support can help soldiers to cope with it. The theoretical part summarizes three main topics - the specificity of the army environment, stress and its impact to health and performance, and social support. Different approaches towards social support, methodological difficulties, positive and negative outcomes of social support are presented. Approach of the author Eric Sonderen was used in the empirical part (Sonderen, 1991, 2012a). The empirical part presents a combine-designed survey. Semi-structured in-depth...

The thesis deals with the relationship between one's time perspective and their ability to cope with the termination of the relationship. The time perspective is composed of five temporal orientations - past positive, past negative, present hedonistic, present fatalistic and future - which differ from each other in personality characteristics and their influence on human behavior. Our aim was to explore the differences among them in the choice of coping strategies in dealing with a breakup and verify the hypothesis. The following methods were used in the research: Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), questions concerning respondent's breakup and Brief COPE, which measured a total of 14 coping strategies on a sample of 237 respondents. The results confirmed the different choices of coping strategies among five time orientations. Although it was not proved that some temporal orientations (past negative) would cope with the breakup more problematically, it seems, however, that these ones mostly use maladaptive coping strategies which can make their breakup adjustment harder. In the conclusion, therefore, are also considered the possibilities of application of our results in psychological counseling practice. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

This thesis is focused on the effects of computerized executive functions training on emotion regulation and affective functioning. The theoretical part summarizes cognition-emotion integration and is based on cognitive neuroscience models suggesting that there are bidirectional links between cortical executive functions centers and cortical centers that regulate emotions. Based on process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998) it's supposed that it is possible to make interventions of emotion dysregulation also through cognitive, antecedent-focused strategies. These assumptions are linked with computerized executive functions training. Such training might have positive consequences for emotion regulation and emotion functioning, as it generate frontal activation (Klinberg et al., 2005). The study measures the potential effect of executive functions training on regulation of negative emotions. The main intervention is a personalized, computer-based cognitive training program BrainTwister. This program is widely used for clinical and diagnostics praxis and rehabilitation. To ascertain the everyday ecological validity of the cognitive training intervention and the emotion regulatory and affective consequences, emotion regulatory experiment (IAPS) together with mood and emotion regulation...

This master's thesis deals with the topic of decision making when choosing a partner in romantic relationships. It reacts to the phenomenon of looking for a partner via internet dating sites and tries to determine whether the requirements we have for an ideal partner correspond to the real-life selection of a romantic partner. In the theoretical part studies and theoretical concepts concerning romantic partnership are presented - selection of a partner as well as relationship maintenance. The thesis is based on evolutionary-psychological theories (Buss, 1989), experience of partner counselors and theoretical concepts of social psychologists, such as triangular theory of love (Sternberg, 1986) or five love languages (Chapman, 2002). In the decision making area, the thesis relies primarily on Kahneman's (2013) two systems within the dual process theory. The empirical part poses the question whether we spot differences between the preferred characteristics of ideal partner and the subjectively evaluated characteristics of the person who we are attracted to at a real-life meeting, motivated to potentially establish a romantic relationship. In my research, most of the observed aspects showed significant references. The target group were Czech university students who participated in speed dating event...

The main aim of this study is to investigate the effect of gender in adolescent Theory of Mind. The term Theory of Mind (TOM) was introduced more than 30 years ago. Most of the TOM studies investigated Theory of Mind among animals, infants, children and clinical patients. Based on literature review, we know that developmental changes do not stop in childhood but continue through adolescence and into adulthood. Evidently there is a lack of studies on Theory of Mind in adolescents, despite the fact that adolescence is a critical stage for social, emotional and relationship skills. One of the variables important for our research is the effect of gender and gender identity. Gender differences are considered one of the least examined aspects of TOM, and further studies are not specifically aimed to gender-related differences. The tests we employed were Reading Mind in the eyes test (revised version, RMET-R) and Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI). Statistical analysis revealed that older adolescents (17- year old) scored significantly higher than younger (16-year old) on the RMET-R test. There were no significant differences between females and males on the RMET-R test performance results. We found no significant effect of gender identity, feminine traits and familiarity with TOM stimuli in relation to RMET-R...

In the first part, diploma thesis presents theoretical background of well-being and sensation seeking tendency concepts. By analysing available resources in Czech and foreign literature it presents current theoretical understanding of these concepts and discusses their relationship to other psyche phenomena. In the empirical part, research hypotheses about existence of the relationship between well-being represented by SWLS questionnaire (Satisfaction With Life Scale; Diener et al., 1985) and sensation seeking tendency represented by SSS V scale (Sensation Seeking Scale V; Zuckerman, 1979) are examined. As support, Ten-item personality inventory TIPI (Gosling et al., 2003) is used. Two groups of respondents participated in the study: Czech (N = 137) and Slovak (N = 181) which were considered one sample (N = 318). Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analysis showed negligible significant relationship (r = 0,12; p < 0,05) between sub-scale Experience Seeking (ES) and SWLS. However, EC score did not predict SWLS variance. Overall, study failed to accept hypothesis of existence of the relationship between SWLS and SSS V and hypothesis of mutual independence was accepted. Furthermore, the thesis deals with closer analysis of the results and personality predictors of SWLS. Keywords:...

This thesis is concerned with the phenomenon of burnout in university teachers, who have been previously rather neglected in connection with this topic. The theoretical part provides an analysis of current knowledge regarding the development of the concept of burnout from the very early interest in this issue in the 1970s to the present, with emphasis being placed on the teaching profession, especially in the tertiary education sector. In the empirical part of the research, the assumption of different levels of burnout in university teachers in the former Eastern Bloc and Western European country was tested. This international study compares the burnout level in teachers from the philosophy faculties of Czech Charles University and German Universität Regensburg. In order to achieve a more holistic view of this topic, the levels of life engagement and depression have been studied as well. The data were collected with the help of Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Life Engagement Test, Beck Depression Inventory and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Quality of Life of Women during Pregnancy Introduction: Our research of quality of life went the way of investigation of general questions (comparison of countries, regions; comparisons of influences of various illnesses and different ways of treatment on the quality of life) mainly at the group of adult people. Problem of the quality of life, not paid so much attention so far (both in our country and abroad), is the quality of life of healthy women during their physiological pregnancy. So far only the interest in the quality of life of women during their high-risk pregnancy prevailed. Objective: This dissertation tries to find answers to questions how a pregnant woman will specify and evaluate her quality of life; which variables will influence her quality of life during physiological pregnancy? Will the quality of life of pregnant women be comparable to that of healthy nonpregnant women and how will the quality of life change in time, during pregnancy? Methods: Longitudinal prospective and retrospective research was used. In this research qualitative and quantitative methods were combined in the context with objectives. For the qualitative stage of the research we opted for the method of discussion in focus groups. And we made a choice of two questionnaires for the quantitative stage: generic...
