Observations of individual massive stars, super-luminous supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and gravitational-wave events involving spectacular black-hole mergers, indicate that the low-metallicity Universe is fundamentally different from our own Galaxy. Many transient phenomena will remain enigmatic until we achieve a firm understanding of the physics and evolution of massive stars at low metallicity (Z). The Hubble Space Telescope has devoted 500 orbits to observe 250 massive stars at low Z in the ultraviolet (UV) with the COS and STIS spectrographs under the ULLYSES program. The complementary ``X-Shooting ULLYSES'' (XShootU) project provides enhanced legacy value with high-quality optical and near-infrared spectra obtained with the wide-wavelength coverage X-shooter spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope. We present an overview of the XShootU project, showing that combining ULLYSES UV and XShootU optical spectra is critical for the uniform determination of stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity, and abundances, as well as wind properties such as mass-loss rates in function of Z. As uncertainties in stellar and wind parameters percolate into many adjacent areas of Astrophysics, the data and modelling of the XShootU project is expected to be a game-changer for our physical understanding of massive stars at low Z. The winds of massive stars have an impact on stellar evolution and on the surrounding medium. The maximum speed reached by these outflows, the terminal wind speed, is a global wind parameter and an essential input for models of stellar atmospheres and feedback. With the arrival of the ULLYSES programme, a legacy UV spectroscopic survey with HST, we have the opportunity to quantify the wind speeds of massive stars at sub-solar metallicity (in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, 0.5Z and 0.2Z) at an unprecedented scale. We empirically quantify the wind speeds of a large sample of OB stars, including supergiants, giants, and dwarfs at sub-solar metallicity. Using these measurements, we investigate trends of terminal wind speed with a number of fundamental stellar parameters, namely effective temperature, metallicity, and surface escape velocity. We empirically determined the terminal wind speed for a sample of 149 OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds either by directly measuring the maximum velocity shift of the absorption component of the Civ 1548-1550 line profile, or by fitting synthetic spectra produced using the Sobolev with exact integration method. Stellar parameters were either collected from the literature, obtained using spectral-type calibrations, or predicted from evolutionary models. We find strong trends of terminal wind speed with effective temperature and surface escape speed when the wind is strong enough to cause a saturated P Cygni profile in Civ 1548-1550. We find evidence for a metallicity dependence on the terminal wind speed proportional to Z^0.22+-0.03 when we compared our results to previous Galactic studies. Our results suggest that effective temperature rather than surface escape speed should be used as a straightforward empirical prediction of terminal wind speed and that the observed metallicity dependence is steeper than suggested by earlier works., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 8 tables. The winds of hot, massive stars are variable from processes happening on both large and small spatial scales. A particular case of such wind variability is 'discrete-absorption components' (DACs) that manifest themselves as outward moving density features in UV resonance line spectra. Such DACs are believed to be caused by large-scale spiral-shaped density structures in the stellar wind. We consider novel 3-D radiation-hydrodynamic models of rotating hot star winds and study the emergence of co-rotating spiral structures due to a local (pseudo-)magnetic spot on the stellar surface. Subsequently, the hydrodynamic models are used to retrieve DAC spectral signatures in synthetic UV spectra created from a 3-D short characteristics radiative transfer code., Comment: to appear in IAU Symposium 370 proceedings

In accelerating and supersonic media, the interaction of photons with spectral lines can be of ultimate importance. However, fully accounting for such line forces currently can only be done by specialised codes in 1-D steady-state flows. More general cases and higher dimensions require alternative approaches. We presented a comprehensive and fast method for computing the radiation line-force using tables of spectral line-strength distribution parameters, which can be applied in arbitrary (multi-D, time-dependent) simulations, including those accounting for the line-deshadowing instability, to compute the appropriate opacities. We assumed local thermodynamic equilibrium to compute a flux-weighted line opacity from $>4$ million spectral lines. We derived the spectral line strength and tabulated the corresponding line-distribution parameters for a range of input densities $\rho\in[10^{-20},10^{-10}]gcm^{-3}$ and temperatures $T\in[10^4,10^{4.7}]K$. We found that the variation of the line distribution parameters plays an essential role in setting the wind dynamics in our models. In our benchmark study, we also found a good overall agreement between the O-star mass-loss rates of our models and those derived from steady-state studies using more detailed radiative transfer. Our models reinforce that self-consistent variation of the line-distribution parameters is important for the dynamics of line-driven flows. Within a well-calibrated O-star regime, our results support the proposed methodology. In practice, utilising the provided tables, yielded a factor $>100$ speed-up in computational time compared to specialised 1-D model-atmosphere codes of line-driven winds, which constitutes an important step towards efficient multi-D simulations. We conclude that our method and tables are ready to be exploited in various radiation-hydrodynamic simulations where the line force is important.

Classical Wolf Rayet (WR) stars are direct supernova progenitors undergoing vigorous mass-loss. Understanding the dense and fast outflows of such WR stars is thus crucial for understanding advanced stages of stellar evolution, the dynamical feedback of massive stars on their environments, and characterizing the distribution of black hole masses. In this paper, we develop first time-dependent, multi-dimensional, radiation-hydrodynamical models of the extended optically thick atmospheres and wind outflows of hydrogen-free classical WR stars. A flux limiting radiation hydrodynamics approach is used on a finite volume mesh to model WR outflows. The opacities are described using a combination of tabulated Rosseland mean opacities and the enhanced line opacities expected within a supersonic flow. For high-luminosity models, a radiation-driven, dense, supersonic wind is launched from deep sub-surface regions associated with peaks in the Rosseland mean opacity. For a model with lower luminosity, on the other hand, the Rosseland mean opacity is not sufficient to sustain a net-radial outflow in the sub-surface regions. Rather, what develops in this case is a "standard" line-driven wind launched from the optically thin regions above an extended and highly turbulent atmosphere. We thus find here a natural transition from optically thick outflows of classical WR stars to optically thin winds of hot, compact sub-dwarfs; in our simulations this transition occurs approximately at a luminosity that is about 40% of the Eddington luminosity. Context: To quantitatively decode the information stored within an observed spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state and accurate radiative transfer solution schemes are required. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for binary companions and 3D structures in the stellar envelopes. The enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1 constitutes a perfect example of such a complex multi-D problem. Aims: To improve our understanding of the LB-1 system, we directly modelled the phase-dependent H-alpha line profiles of this system. To this end, we developed a multi-purpose binary-object spectral-synthesis code in 3D (BOSS-3D). Methods: BOSS-3D calculates synthetic line profiles for a given state of the circumstellar material. The standard pz-geometry commonly used for single stars is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each involved object and by accounting for the appropriate coordinate transformations. The code is then applied to the LB-1 system, considering two main hypotheses, a binary containing a stripped star and Be star, or a B star and a black hole with a disc. Results: Comparing these two scenarios, neither model can reproduce the detailed phase-dependent shape of the H-alpha line profiles. A satisfactory match with the observations, however, is obtained by invoking a disc around the primary object in addition to the Be-star disc or the black-hole accretion disc. Conclusions: The developed code can be used to model synthetic line profiles for a wide variety of binary systems, ranging from transit spectra of planetary atmospheres, to post-asymptotic giant branch binaries including circumstellar and circumbinary discs and massive-star binaries with stellar winds and disc systems. For the LB-1 system, our modelling provides strong evidence that each object in the system contains a disc-like structure.

Line-driven winds of hot, luminous stars are intrinsically unstable due to the line-deshadowing instability (LDI). In non-magnetic hot stars, the LDI leads to the formation of an inhomogeneous wind consisting of small-scale, spatially separated clumps that can have great effects on observational diagnostics. However, for magnetic hot stars the LDI generated structures, wind dynamics, and effects on observational diagnostics have not been directly investigated so far. We investigated the non-linear development of LDI generated structures and dynamics in a magnetic line-driven wind of a typical O-supergiant. We employed two-dimensional axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the LDI using the Smooth Source Function approximation for evaluating the assumed one-dimensional line force. To facilitate the interpretation of these magnetic models, they were compared with a corresponding non-magnetic LDI simulation as well as a magnetic simulation neglecting the LDI. A central result obtained is that the wind morphology and wind clumping properties change strongly with increasing wind-magnetic confinement. Most notably, in magnetically confined flows, the LDI leads to large-scale, shellular sheets ('pancakes') that are quite distinct from the spatially separate, small-scale clumps in non-magnetic line-driven winds. Context. Radiation-driven mass loss is key to our understanding of massive-star evolution. However, for low-luminosity O-type stars there are big discrepancies between theoretically predicted and empirically derived mass-loss rates (called the weak-wind problem). Aims. We compute radiation-line-driven wind models of a typical weak-wind star to determine its temperature structure and the corresponding impact on ultra-violet (UV) line formation. Methods. We carried out hydrodynamic simulations of the line-deshadowing instability (LDI) for a weak-wind star in the Galaxy. Subsequently, we used this LDI model as input in a short-characteristics radiative transfer code to compute synthetic UV line profiles. Results. We find that the line-driven weak wind is significantly shock heated to high temperatures and is unable to cool down effciently. This results in a complex temperature structure where more than half of the wind volume has temperatures significantly higher than the stellar effective temperature. Therefore, a substantial portion of the weak wind will be more ionised, resulting in a reduction of the UV line opacity and therefore in weaker line profiles for a given mass-loss rate. Quantifying this, we find that weak-wind mass-loss rates derived from unsaturated UV lines could be underestimated by a factor of between 10 and 100 if the high-temperature gas is not properly taken into account in the spectroscopic analysis. This offers a tentative basic explanation for the weak-wind problem: line-driven weak winds are not really weaker than theoretically expected, but rather a large portion of their wind volume is much hotter than the stellar effective temperature.

Context. Red supergiants are observed to undergo vigorous mass-loss. However, to date, no theoretical model has succeeded in explaining the origins of these objects' winds. This strongly limits our understanding of red supergiant evolution and Type II-P and II-L supernova progenitor properties. Aims. We examine the role that vigorous atmospheric turbulence may play in initiating and determining the mass-loss rates of red supergiant stars. Methods. We analytically and numerically solve the equations of conservation of mass and momentum, which we later couple to an atmospheric temperature structure, to obtain theoretically motivated mass-loss rates. We then compare these to state-of-the-art empirical mass-loss rate scaling formulae as well as observationally inferred mass-loss rates of red supergiants. Results. We find that the pressure due to the characteristic turbulent velocities inferred for red supergiants is sufficient to explain the mass-loss rates of these objects in the absence of the normally employed opacity from circumstellar dust. Motivated by this initial success, we provide a first theoretical and fully analytic mass-loss rate prescription for red supergiants. We conclude by highlighting some intriguing possible implications of these rates for future studies of stellar evolution, especially in light of the lack of a direct dependence on metallicity., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Vigorous mass loss in the classical Wolf-Rayet (WR) phase is important for the late evolution and final fate of massive stars. We develop spherically symmetric time-dependent and steady-state hydrodynamical models of the radiation-driven wind outflows and associated mass loss from classical WR stars. The simulations are based on combining the opacities typically used in static stellar structure and evolution models with a simple parametrised form for the enhanced line-opacity expected within a supersonic outflow. Our simulations reveal high mass-loss rates initiated in deep and hot optically thick layers around T\approx 200kK. The resulting velocity structure is non-monotonic and can be separated into three phases: i) an initial acceleration to supersonic speeds ii) stagnation and even deceleration, and iii) an outer region of rapid re-acceleration. The characteristic structures seen in converged steady-state simulations agree well with the outflow properties of our time-dependent models. By directly comparing our dynamic simulations to corresponding hydrostatic models, we demonstrate explicitly that the need to invoke extra energy transport in convectively inefficient regions of stellar structure and evolution models is merely an artefact of enforcing a hydrostatic outer boundary. Moreover, the "dynamically inflated" inner regions of our simulations provide a natural explanation for the often-found mismatch between predicted hydrostatic WR radii and those inferred from spectroscopy. Finally, we contrast our simulations with alternative recent WR wind models based on co-moving frame radiative transfer for computing the radiation force. Since CMF transfer currently cannot handle non-monotonic velocity fields, the characteristic deceleration regions found here are avoided in such simulations by invoking an ad-hoc very high degree of clumping., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Line-driven stellar winds from massive (OB) stars are subject to a strong line-deshadowing instability. Recently, spectropolarimetric surveys have collected ample evidence that a subset of Galactic massive stars hosts strong surface magnetic fields. We investigate here the propagation and stability of magneto-radiative waves in such a magnetised, line-driven wind. Our analytic, linear stability analysis includes line-scattering from the stellar radiation, and accounts for both radial and non-radial perturbations. We establish a bridging law for arbitrary perturbation wavelength after which we analyse separately the long- and short-wavelength limits. While long-wavelength radiative and magnetic waves are found to be completely decoupled, a key result is that short-wavelength, radially propagating Alfv\'en waves couple to the scattered radiation field and are strongly damped due to the line-drag effect. This damping of magnetic waves in a scattering-line-driven flow could have important effects on regulating the non-linear wind dynamics, and so might also have strong influence on observational diagnostics of the wind structure and clumping of magnetic line-driven winds., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. We present a detailed analysis of the disk and circumstellar environment of the forming O-type star AFGL 4176 mm1, placing results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) into context with multiwavelength data. With ALMA, we detect seventeen 1.2 mm continuum sources within 5$''$ (21,000 au) of AFGL 4176 mm1. We find that mm1 has a spectral index of 3.4$\pm$0.2 across the ALMA band, with $>$87% of its 1.2 mm continuum emission from dust. The source mm2, projected 4200 au from mm1, may be a companion or a blueshifted knot in a jet. We also explore the morphological differences between the molecular lines detected with ALMA, finding 203 lines from 25 molecules, which we categorize into several morphological types. Our results show that AFGL 4176 mm1 provides an example of a forming O-star with a large and chemically complex disk, which is mainly traced by nitrogen-bearing molecules. Lines that show strong emission on the blueshifted side of the disk are predominantly oxygen-bearing, which we suggest are tracing a disk accretion shock. The molecules C$^{34}$S, H$_2$CS and CH$_{3}$CCN trace a slow wide-angle wind or dense structures in the outflow cavity walls. With the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we detect a compact continuum source ($<$2000 $\times$ 760 au) at 1.2 cm, associated with mm1, of which $>$96% is from ionized gas. The ATCA NH$_3$(1,1) and (2,2) emission traces a large-scale (r$\sim$0.5 pc) rotating toroid with the disk source mm1 in the blueshifted part of this structure offset to the northwest., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 50 pages, 26 figures. We present high-resolution (30 mas or 130 au at 4.2 kpc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at 1.2 mm of the disc around the forming O-type star AFGL 4176 mm1. The disc (AFGL 4176 mm1-main) has a radius of ~1000 au and contains significant structure, most notably a spiral arm on its redshifted side. We fitted the observed spiral with logarithmic and Archimedean spiral models. We find that both models can describe its structure, but the Archimedean spiral with a varying pitch angle fits its morphology marginally better. As well as signatures of rotation across the disc, we observe gas arcs in CH$_3$CN that connect to other millimetre continuum sources in the field, supporting the picture of interactions within a small cluster around AFGL 4176 mm1-main. Using local thermodynamic equilibrium modelling of the CH$_3$CN K-ladder, we determine the temperature and velocity field across the disc, and thus produce a map of the Toomre stability parameter. Our results indicate that the outer disc is gravitationally unstable and has already fragmented or is likely to fragment in the future, possibly producing further companions. Context: Knowledge about hot, massive stars is usually inferred from quantitative spectroscopy. To analyse non-spherical phenomena, the existing 1D codes must be extended to higher dimensions, and corresponding tools need to be developed. Aims: We present a 3D radiative transfer code that is capable of calculating continuum and line scattering problems in the winds of hot stars. By considering spherically symmetric test models, we discuss potential error sources, and indicate advantages and disadvantages by comparing different solution methods. Further, we analyse the UV resonance line formation in the winds of rapidly rotating O stars. Methods: We consider both a (simplified) continuum model including scattering and thermal sources, and a UV resonance line transition approximated by a two-level-atom. We applied the short-characteristics (SC) method, using linear or monotonic B\'ezier interpolations, to solve the equation of radiative transfer on a non-uniform Cartesian grid. To calculate scattering dominated problems, our solution method is supplemented by an accelerated $\Lambda$-iteration scheme. Results: For the spherical test models, the mean relative error of the source function is on the $5-20\,\%$ level, depending on the applied interpolation technique and the complexity of the considered model. All calculated line profiles are in excellent agreement with corresponding 1D solutions. The predicted line profiles from fast rotating stars show a distinct behaviour as a function of rotational speed and inclination. This behaviour is tightly coupled to the wind structure and the description of gravity darkening and stellar surface distortion. Conclusions: Our SC methods are ready to be used for quantitative analyses of UV resonance line profiles. When calculating optically thick continua, both SC methods give reliable results, in contrast to the alternative finite-volume method.

(Abridged) The behaviour of mass loss across bi-stability jump is a key uncertainty in models of massive stars. While an increase in mass loss is theoretically predicted, this has so far not been observationally confirmed. However, radiation-driven winds of massive stars are known to exhibit clumpy structures triggered by the line-deshadowing instability (LDI). Wind clumping affects empirical mass-loss rates inferred from density square-dependent spectral diagnostics. If clumping properties differ significantly for O and B supergiants across the bi-stability jump, this may help alleviate discrepancies between theory and observations. We investigate with analytical and numerical tools how the onset of clumpy structures behaves in the winds of O supergiants (OSG) and B supergiants (BSG) across the bi-stability jump. We derive a scaling relation for the linear growth rate of the LDI for a single optically thick line and apply it in both regimes. We run 1D time-dependent line-driven instability simulations to study the non-linear evolution of the LDI in clumpy OSG and BSG winds. Linear perturbation analysis for a single line shows that the LDI linear growth rate scales strongly with stellar effective temperature and terminal wind speed. This implies significantly lower growth rates for (cooler, slower) BSG winds than for OSG winds. This is confirmed by the non-linear simulations, which show significant differences in OSG and BSG wind structure formation, with the latter characterized by significantly weaker clumping factors and lower velocity dispersions. This suggests that lower correction factors due to clumping should be employed when deriving empirical mass-loss rates for BSGs on the cool side of the bi-stability jump. Radiative feedback from luminous, massive stars during their formation is a key process in moderating accretion onto the stellar object. In the prior papers in this series, we showed that one form such feedback takes is UV line-driven disc ablation. Extending on this study, we now constrain the strength of this effect in the parameter range of star and disc properties appropriate to forming massive stars. Simulations show that ablation rate depends strongly on stellar parameters, but that this dependence can be parameterized as a nearly constant, fixed enhancement over the wind mass loss rate, allowing us to predict the rate of disc ablation for massive (proto)stars as a function of stellar mass and metallicity. By comparing this to predicted accretion rates, we conclude that ablation is a strong feedback effect for very massive (proto)stars which should be considered in future studies of massive star formation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Context: State of the art quantitative spectroscopy of OB-stars compares synthetic spectra (calculated by means of 1D, spherically symmetric computer codes) with observations. Certain stellar atmospheres, however, show strong deviations from spherical symmetry, and need to be treated in 3D. Aims: We present a newly developed 3D radiative transfer code, tailored to the solution of the radiation field in rapidly expanding stellar atmospheres. We apply our code to the continuum transfer in wind-ablation models, and to the UV resonance line formation in magnetic winds. Methods: We have used a 3D finite-volume method for the solution of the equation of radiative transfer, to study continuum- and line-scattering problems. Convergence has been accelerated by a non-local approximate Lambda-iteration scheme. Particular emphasis has been put on careful (spherically symmetric) test cases. Results: Typical errors of the source functions, when compared to 1D solutions, are of the order of 10-20 %, and increase for optically thick continua. In circumstellar discs, the radiation temperatures in the (optically thin) transition region from wind to disc are quite similar to corresponding values in the wind. For MHD simulations of dynamical magnetospheres, the line profiles, calculated with our 3D code, agree well with previous solutions using a 3D-SEI method. When compared with profiles resulting from the `analytic dynamical magnetosphere' (ADM) model, significant differences become apparent. Conclusions: Due to similar radiation temperatures in the wind and the transition region to the disc, the same line-strength distribution can be applied within radiation hydrodynamic calculations for circumstellar discs in `accreting high-mass stars'. To properly describe the UV line formation in dynamical magnetospheres, the ADM model needs to be further developed, at least in a large part of the outer wind.

OB stars exhibit various types of spectral variability historically associated with wind structures, including the apparently ubiquitous discrete absorption components (DACs). These features have been proposed to be caused either by magnetic fields or non-radial pulsations. In this second paper of this series, we revisit the canonical phenomenological hydrodynamical modelling used to explain the formation of DACs by taking into account modern observations and more realistic theoretical predictions. Using constraints on putative bright spots located on the surface of the O giant $\xi$ Persei derived from high precision space-based broadband optical photometry obtained with the Microvariability and Oscillations of STars (MOST) space telescope, we generate two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of co-rotating interaction regions in its wind. We then compute synthetic ultraviolet (UV) resonance line profiles using Sobolev Exact Integration and compare them with historical timeseries obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) to evaluate if the observed behaviour of $\xi$ Persei's DACs is reproduced. Testing three different models of spot size and strength, we find that the classical pattern of variability can be successfully reproduced for two of them: the model with the smallest spots yields absorption features that are incompatible with observations. Furthermore, we test the effect of the radial dependence of ionization levels on line driving, but cannot conclusively assess the importance of this factor. In conclusion, this study self-consistently links optical photometry and UV spectroscopy, paving the way to a better understanding of cyclical wind variability in massive stars in the context of the bright spot paradigm., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

The extreme luminosities of hot, massive stars drive strong stellar winds through UV line-scattering. For OB stars with an orbiting circumstellar disk, we explore the effect of such line-scattering in ablating disk material, initially focusing on the marginally optically thin decretion disks of classical Oe and Be stars. For this we apply a multi-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics code, assuming optically thin ray tracing for the stellar continuum and a multi-ray Sobolev treatment of the line transfer. This accounts for desaturation of line-absorption by Keplerian shear in the disk, and associated driving by non-radial photons. Results show dense, intermediate-speed surface ablation, consistent with the strong, blue-shifted absorption seen in UV wind lines of Be shell stars. The asymptotic ablation rate is typically an order-unity factor times the stellar wind mass loss rate, leading to disk destruction times of order months to years for Be disks, consistent with observations. The much stronger radiative forces of O stars reduce this time to order days, making sustaining a disk difficult, and so providing a natural explanation for the rarity of Galactic Oe stars. Additionally, the weakened line-driving at lower metallicity implies both a reduction in the winds that help spin-down stars from near-critical rotation, and in the ablation of decretion disks, thus providing a natural explanation for the higher fraction of Classical Be stars, and the presence of Oe stars, in the Magellanic Clouds. Hot, massive stars (spectral types O and B) have extreme luminosities ($10^4 -10^6 L_\odot$) that drive strong stellar winds through UV line-scattering. Some massive stars also have disks, formed by either decretion from the star (as in the rapidly rotating "Classical Be stars"), or accretion during the star's formation. This dissertation examines the role of stellar radiation in driving (ablating) material away from these circumstellar disks. A key result is that the observed month to year decay of Classical Be disks can be explained by line-driven ablation without, as previously done, appealing to anomalously strong viscous diffusion. Moreover, the higher luminosity of O stars leads to ablation of optically thin disks on dynamical timescales of order a day, providing a natural explanation for the lack of observed Oe stars. In addition to the destruction of Be disks, this dissertation also introduces a model for their formation by coupling observationally inferred non-radial pulsation modes and rapid stellar rotation to launch material into orbiting Keplerian disks. In contrast to such Be decretion disks, star-forming accretion disks are much denser and so are generally optically thick to continuum processes. To circumvent the computational challenges associated with radiation hydrodynamics through optically thick media, we develop an approximate method for treating continuum absorption in the limit of geometrically thin disks. The comparison of ablation with and without continuum absorption shows that accounting for disk optical thickness leads to less than a 50$\%$ reduction in ablation rate, implying that ablation rate depends mainly on stellar properties like luminosity., Comment: PhD dissertation, Univ Delaware, Fall 2015

We examine X-rays from radiatively cooled shocks, focusing on how their thin-shell instability reduces X-ray emission. For 2D simulations of collision between equal expanding winds, we carry out a parameter study of such instability as a function of the ratio of radiative vs. adiabatic-expansion cooling lengths. In the adiabatic regime, the extended cooling layer suppresses instability, leading to planar shock compression with X-ray luminosity that follows closely the expected (Lx ~ M^2) quadratic scaling with mass-loss rate M . In the strongly radiative limit, the X-ray emission now follows an expected linear scaling with mass loss (Lx ~ M), but the instability deforms the shock compression into extended shear layers with oblique shocks along fingers of cooled, dense material. The spatial dispersion of shock thermalization limits strong X-ray emission to the tips and troughs of the fingers, and so reduces the X-ray emission (here by about a factor 1/50) below what is expected from analytic radiative-shock models without unstable structure. Between these two limits, X-ray emission can switch between a high-state associated with extended shock compression, and a low-state characterized by extensive shear. Further study is needed to clarify the origin of this "shear mixing reduction factor" in X-ray emission, and its dependence on parameters like the shock Mach number.
