We prove existence of a measurable Riemannian structure on higher-dimensional harmonic Sierpinski gasket fractals and deduce Gaussian heat kernel bounds in the geodesic metric. Our proof differs from that given by Kigami for the usual Sierpinski gasket in that we show the geodesics are de Rham curves, for which there is an extensive regularity theory.

This paper introduces a notion of differential forms on closed, potentially fractal, subsets of Euclidean space by defining pointwise cotangent spaces using the restriction of $C^1$ functions to this set. Aspects of cohomology are developed: it is shown that the differential forms are a Banach algebra and it is possible to integrate these forms along rectifiable paths. These definitions are connected to the theory of differential forms on Dirichlet spaces by considering fractals with finite energy coordinates. In this situation, the $C^1$ differential forms project onto the space of Dirichlet differential forms. Further, it is shown that if the intrinsic metric of a Dirichlet form is a length space, then the image of any rectifiable path through a finite energy coordinate sequence is also rectifiable. The example of the harmonic Sierpinski gasket is worked out in detail.

We develop a general framework on Dirichlet spaces to prove a weak form of the Bakry-\'Emery estimate and study its consequences. This estimate may be satisfied in situations, like metric graphs, where generalized notions of Ricci curvature lower bounds are not available.

We give a mathematically rigorous construction of a magnetic Schr\"odinger operator corresponding to a field with flux through finitely many holes of the Sierpinski Gasket. The operator is shown to have discrete spectrum accumulating at $\infty$, and it is shown that the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues is the same as that for the Laplacian. Most eigenfunctions may be computed using gauge transformations corresponding to the magnetic field and the remainder of the spectrum may be approximated to arbitrary precision by using a sequence of approximations by magnetic operators on finite graphs., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

We prove Barlow--Bass type resistance estimates for two random walks associated with repeated barycentric subdivisions of a triangle. If the random walk jumps between the centers of triangles in the subdivision that have common sides, the resistance scales as a power of a constant $\rho$ which is theoretically estimated to be in the interval $5/4\leqslant\rho\leqslant3/2$, with a numerical estimate $\rho\approx1.306$. This corresponds to the theoretical estimate of spectral dimension $d_S$ between 1.63 and 1.77, with a numerical estimate $d_S\approx1.74$. On the other hand, if the random walk jumps between the corners of triangles in the subdivision, then the resistance scales as a power of a constant $\rho^T=1/\rho$, which is theoretically estimated to be in the interval $2/3\leqslant\rho^T\leqslant4/5$. This corresponds to the spectral dimension between 2.28 and 2.38. The difference between $\rho$ and $\rho^T$ implies that the the limiting behavior of random walks on the repeated barycentric subdivisions is more delicate than on the generalized Sierpinski Carpets, and suggests interesting possibilities for further research, including possible non-uniqueness of self-similar Dirichlet forms., Comment: 20 Pages, 10 Figures

This article studies potential theory and spectral analysis on compact metric spaces, which we refer to as fractal quantum graphs. These spaces can be represented as a (possibly infinite) union of 1-dimensional intervals and a totally disconnected (possibly uncountable) compact set, which roughly speaking represents the set of junction points. Classical quantum graphs and fractal spaces such as the Hanoi attractor are included among them. We begin with proving the existence of a resistance form on the Hanoi attractor, and go on to establish heat kernel estimates and upper and lower bounds on the eigenvalue counting function of Laplacians corresponding to weakly self-similar measures on the Hanoi attractor. These estimates and bounds rely heavily on the relation between the length and volume scaling factors of the fractal. We then state and prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a resistance form on a general fractal quantum graph. Finally, we extend our spectral results to a large class of weakly self-similar fractal quantum graphs.

This article develops analysis on fractal $3N$-gaskets, a class of post-critically finite fractals which include the Sierpinski triangle for $N=1$, specifically properties of the Laplacian $\Delta$ on these gaskets. We first prove the existence of a self-similar geodesic metric on these gaskets, and prove heat kernel estimates for this Laplacian with respect to the geodesic metric. We also compute the elements of the method of spectral decimation, a technique used to determine the spectrum of post-critically finite fractals. Spectral decimation on these gaskets arises from more complicated dynamics than in previous examples, i.e. the functions involved are rational rather than polynomial. Due to the nature of these dynamics, we are able to show that there are gaps in the spectrum.

The article deals with intrinsic metrics, Dirac operators and spectral triples induced by regular Dirichlet and resistance forms. We show, in particular, that if a local resistance form is given and the space is compact in resistance metric, then the intrinsic metric yields a geodesic space. Given a regular Dirichlet form, we consider Dirac operators within the framework of differential 1-forms proposed by Cipriani and Sauvageot, and comment on its spectral properties. If the Dirichlet form admits a carr\'e operator and the generator has discrete spectrum, then we can construct a related spectral triple, and in the compact and strongly local case the associated Connes distance coincides with the intrinsic metric. We finally give a description of the intrinsic metric in terms of vector fields.

Using the standard tools of Daniell-Stone integrals, Stone-\v{C}ech compactification and Gelfand transform, we discuss how any Dirichlet form defined on a measurable space can be transformed into a regular Dirichlet form on a locally compact space. This implies existence, on the Stone-\v{C}ech compactification, of the associated Hunt process. As an application, we show that for any separable resistance form in the sense of Kigami there exists an associated Markov process.

Much is known in the analysis of a finitely ramified self-similar fractal when the fractal has a harmonic structure: a Dirichlet form which respects the self-similarity of a fractal. What is still an open question is when such structure exists in general. In this paper, we introduce two fractals, the fractalina and pillow, and compute their resistance scaling factor. This is the factor which dictates how the Dirichlet form scales with the self-similarity of the fractal. By knowing this factor one can compute the harmonic structure on the fractal. The fractalina has scaling factor $(3+\sqrt{41})/16$, and the pillow fractal has scaling factor $\sqrt[3]{2}$.

The brain is one of the most studied and highly complex systems in the biological world. It is the information center behind all vertebrate and most invertebrate life, and thus has become a major focus in current research. While many of these studies have concentrated on studying the brain directly, our focus is the structure of the brain itself: at its core an interconnected network of nodes (neurons). A better understanding of the structural aspects of the brain should elucidate some of its functional properties. In this paper we analyze the brain of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Consisting of only 302 neurons, it is one of the better-understood neural networks. Using a Laplacian matrix of the 279-neuron "giant component" of the network, we use an eigenvalue counting function to look for fractal-like self similarity. This matrix representation is also used to plot (in eigenfunction coordinates) both 2 and 3 dimensional visualizations of the neural network. Further analysis examines the small-world properties of the system, including average path length and clustering coefficient. We then test for localization of eigenfunctions, using graph energy and spacial variance. To better understand these results, all of these calculations are also performed on random networks, branching trees, and known fractals, as well as fractals which have been "rewired" to have small-world properties. This analysis is one of many stepping-stones in the research of neural networks. While many of the structures and functions within the brain are known, understanding how the two interact is also important. We investigate the relation between simple random walks on repeated barycentric subdivisions of a triangle and a self-similar fractal, Strichartz hexacarpet, which we introduce. We explore a graph approximation to the hexacarpet in order to establish a graph isomorphism between the hexacarpet approximations and Barycentric subdivisions of the triangle, and discuss various numerical calculations performed on the these graphs. We prove that equilateral barycentric subdivisions converge to a self-similar geodesic metric space of dimension log(6)/log(2), or about 2.58. Our numerical experiments give evidence to a conjecture that the simple random walks on the equilateral barycentric subdivisions converge to a continuous diffusion process on the Strichartz hexacarpet corresponding to a different spectral dimension (estimated numerically to be about 1.74)., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

We explore the relationship between limit spaces of contracting self-similar groups and self-similar structures. We give the condition on a contracting group such that its limit space admits a self-similar structure, and also the condition such that this self-similar structure is p.c.f. We then give the necessary and sufficient condition on a p.c.f. self-similar structure such that there exists a contracting group whose limit space has an isomorphic self-similar structure; in this case, we provide a construction that produces such a contracting group.
