1. Making Real Virtual Labs

Abstract

Francis Bacon began defining scientific methodology in the early 17th century, and secondary school science classes began to implement science labs in the mid-19th century. By the early 20th century, leading educators were suggesting that science labs be used to develop scientific thinking habits in young students, and at the beginning of the 21st century, educators are still seeking to achieve this goal. Technology offers one path to success. Yet, the numerous "virtual labs" available offer little, or no, practice in scientific thinking. This paper presents a new approach to using technology, one that uses real experiments and provides students with the opportunity to think like scientists.

3. Development and History of the Concept of PPB.

Abstract

Program budgeting is an extension and refinement of budgeting processes developed during the last half century. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theory, philosophy, and techniques of this new process, and to develop a conceptual framework for its use. An account of the historical development of Planning Programming Budgeting Systems (PPBS) is followed by a description of its conceptual framework which includes a list of program budgeting procedures. Section IV of the paper concerns the measurement of physical performance; section V discusses approaches to physical measurement and section VI presents the application of discounted cash flow to PPBS and includes a definition of discounted cash flow. Abstract

In this work, Monte Carlo methods are used for the design of highly efficient detector structures for megavoltage X-ray imaging. The detector structures consist of a converter material and an active medium ('binary' detector systems). The novel approach is to impose a spatial structure on the converter material that intersperses the active medium and defines the size of a detector cell. The dimensions of these structures have to be optimized with respect to efficiency and spatial resolution. The results show that the quantum efficiency and detective quantum efficiency at zero frequency of such structures surpasse the efficiency of conventional detector structures using the converter material as a buildup layer and depend on the dimensions of the converter structure and the active medium as well as the materials itself. In general, larger converter structures result in a higher efficiency. The detector signal is proportional to the size of the active medium in the cell. However, the size of the structures are limited by the specifications for the desired spatial resolution. Index Terms--Binary detector structure, Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract

A brief field evaluation of four different infrared thermal viewers was conducted using buried and surface antitank mines as viewing objects. Under the conditions which existed, buried mines were visible for about half the viewing opportunities; surface mines were almost always visible. Because of the very limited range of conditions of this brief evaluation, the results and conclusions presented here may not apply to other sets of circumstances and should not be considered general.
