2. Impact of pressure and temperature on the broadband dielectric response of the HKUST-1 metal-organic framework

Abstract

Herein we employed high-resolution spectroscopic techniques in combination with periodic ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to establish the different polarization processes for a porous copper-based MOF, termed HKUST-1. We used alternating current measurements to determine its dielectric response between 4 Hz and 1.5 MHz where orientational polarization is predominant, while synchrotron infrared (IR) reflectance was used to probe the far-IR, mid-IR, and near-IR dielectric response across the 1.2 THz to 150 THz range (ca. 40 - 5000 cm^-1) where vibrational and optical polarizations are principal contributors to its dielectric permittivity. We demonstrate the role of pressure on the evolution of broadband dielectric response, where THz vibrations reveal distinct blue and red shifts of phonon modes from structural deformation of the copper paddle-wheel and the organic linker, respectively. We also investigated the effect of temperature on dielectric constants in the MHz region pertinent to microelectronics, to study temperature-dependent dielectric losses via dissipation in an alternating electric field. The DFT calculations offer insights into the physical mechanisms responsible for dielectric transitions observed in the experiments and enable us to explain the frequency shifts phenomenon detected under pressure. Abstract

We present the frequency-dependant (dynamic) dielectric response of a group of topical polycrystalline zeolitic imidazolate-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in the extended infrared spectral region. Using synchrotron-based FTIR spectroscopy in specular reflectance, in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have revealed detailed structure-property trends linking the THz region dielectric response to framework porosity and structural density. The work demonstrates that MOFs are promising candidate materials not only for low-\k{appa} electronics applications but could also be pioneering for terahertz (THz) applications, such as next-generation broadband communications technologies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We have designed, constructed and optimized a novel cell for micro photoacoustic (microPA) spectroscopy (microPAS) as part of a collaboration between the Canadian Light Source and Natural Resources Canada. The cell allows inspection of micrometric samples under a visible light microscope, together with measurement of mid-infrared absorption spectra. Our goal is to introduce a methodology enabling mid-IR investigation of micrometric samples that are inaccessible by other measurement configurations; this includes opaque samples, as well as those that are prone to scattering or possess irregular topography. We have achieved this objective, building and testing a prototype PA spectromicroscopy cell using several different optical sources.

Abstract

The assumption behind the FCC's Open Network Architecture policy was that competition would be helped and prices kept fair by keeping local exchange carriers from monopolizing the unregulated enhanced telephone services market. However, the FCC's lack of specificity in setting up the policy gave regional holding companies (RHCs) the opportunity to flesh it out, something they could do with their own competitive advantage in mind rather than innovation. The resultant RHC power could be detrimental to the contestability of this market.

Abstract

We describe a method for addressing redox enzymes adsorbed on a carbon electrode using synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy combined with protein film electrochemistry. Redox enzymes have high turnover frequencies, typically 10-1000 s(-1), and therefore, fast experimental triggers are needed in order to study subturnover kinetics and identify the involvement of transient species important to their catalytic mechanism. In an electrochemical experiment, this equates to the use of microelectrodes to lower the electrochemical cell constant and enable changes in potential to be applied very rapidly. We use a biological cofactor, flavin mononucleotide, to demonstrate the power of synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy relative to conventional infrared methods and show that vibrational spectra with good signal-to-noise ratios can be collected for adsorbed species with low surface coverages on microelectrodes with a geometric area of 25 × 25 μm(2). We then demonstrate the applicability of synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy to adsorbed proteins by reporting potential-induced changes in the flavin mononucleotide active site of a flavoenzyme. The method we describe will allow time-resolved spectroscopic studies of chemical and structural changes at redox sites within a variety of proteins under precise electrochemical control.

Abstract

Students from Lemon Bay High School in Englewood, FL, have been involved in monitoring and relocating marine turtle nests on around 2.9 km of Boca Grande, FL. This work has been undertaken through a contract gained by the Coastal Wildlife Club, a local support group for the Manasota Key Sea Turtle Patrol. The students found it alarming to see dead turtles and unhatched eggs, but welcomed the opportunity to learn about turtles and how to protect them. This work played a valuable role in encouraging students to pursue further science studies.
