Bush encroachment involves a widespread increase in, and abundance of, woody vegetation in grassland and savanna biomes. This phenomenon has a direct impact on the socio-economic well-being of rural communities and affects livestock owners and those who utilise the land for various other purposes. This study set out to evaluate and gain an understanding of how livestock owners and land users in a typical rural village in South Africa’s North West Province perceive bush encroachment and the impact it has on the community’s ecosystem services. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design was used to document the perceptions of the participants regarding bush encroachment and bush control in an attempt to describe characteristics and to find answers to questions related to how local communities are affected by bush encroachment and the control thereof. The results show that encroachment has a significant impact on the socio-economic status of participants. Furthermore, it was found that the vast untapped knowledge of local livestock owners is vital to control bush encroachment, preserve the land for various types of usage and to conserve natural resources. Evaluating participants’ responses and perceptions also contributed significantly to gaining an understanding of how bush encroachment and the control thereof impact rural communities socio-economically. This led the contributors to conclude that raising awareness, actively engaging with the community, imparting skills and offering educational opportunities, creating jobs, merging biophysical activities and promoting active participation are key to the success of programmes aimed at bush control and the resultant improvement of ecosystem services. more...

Aims: Shrub encroachment is a major challenge for livestock and wildlife management in semi‐arid savannas. Shrub removal by land managers is widespread, but the long‐term effects on vegetation structure and composition, which determine carrying capacity for herbivores, are poorly documented. This study aims to examine the effects of selective shrub removal to guide vegetation management in key land uses of semi‐arid African savannas. Questions: Vegetation responses were assessed across land uses and treatments to answer the following questions: (1) does shrub removal increase the frequency of palatable plants and therefore herbivore‐carrying capacity; (2) does selective shrub removal decrease woody vegetation structure 15 years after application; and (3) how do these effects differ between cattle and wildlife ranching? Location: Molopo region of the North West Province, South Africa. Methods: Herbaceous and woody vegetations were sampled within six transects each of three wildlife ranches and three cattle ranches in areas that had either been selectively shrub‐controlled with herbicides 10–15 years previously or left untreated. To quantify effects of woody shrub control on herbaceous functional‐group abundances and assemblages, tree equivalents, regrowth rate, and shrub abundance, we compared these variables across two treatments (treated and untreated) and land uses. Data were analysed using GLMMs, NMDS ordinations, PERMANOVA, and SIMPER. Results: Selective shrub control effectively improved palatable herbaceous vegetation, especially on cattle ranches. Especially abundance of perennial grass was higher on wildlife ranches compared to cattle ranches. Tree equivalent was higher in untreated compared to treated plots, and these differences were more pronounced on wildlife ranches than on cattle ranches. Conclusionss: Selective shrub removal improved the palatable herbaceous layer for both wildlife and cattle ranching and can be considered an effective management strategy in semi‐arid rangelands. Treed savannas and treeless grasslands occur across Mokala National Park, South Africa. To identify soil properties potentially underpinning these marked differences in vegetation structure, we analysed the soil chemistry of 27 composite pedoderm samples in both savannas and grasslands. Savannas had a greater pH and greater mean concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn, B, Na and C compared with the grasslands. Tree seedlings are likely to be more constrained in the grasslands than in the savannas because of Al toxicity and deficiency of P, Cu and B. Of the nutrients analysed, B is likely to have had the greatest effect on vegetation structure for two main reasons. Firstly, the mean concentration of B in the grassland (0.05 mg kg
−1 ) was approximately ten times less than the concentration expected to constrain plant growth. Secondly, the extreme scarcity of B is likely to have reduced the vigour of tree seedlings more than that of the grass sward because grasses have a considerably lower requirement for B than eudicot trees. We suggest that abiotic soil forming processes such as colluvial action and aeolian deposition are the primary factors influencing pH and concentrations of B, both of which have a disproportionate effect on tree establishment. - Abstract
South Africa undertook a national Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) target setting process during 2017/18 in response to the United Nations Convention to Combatting Desertification’s call for signatory countries to voluntarily commit to LDN as also requested under Sustainability Development Goal 15.3. The process was supported by the Global Mechanism (GM) and followed their guidelines. This resulted in an ambitious set of targets being set for 2030. Early in the process it was recognised that biome level or landscape process based (bush encroachment, alien plant species removal) targets were more appropriate than location specific targets. South Africa has used the World Overview of Conservation Technologies and Approaches (WOCAT) Mapping Questionnaire (QM), to conducted two, ten years apart, assessments based on experts’ perception of municipal level land degradation. The spatial location and extent of degradation, as identified from these studies, differed substantially from the three global indicators suggested as a baseline for LDN target setting. An analysis of the reasons for the discrepancies between the UNCCD indicators from the perception-based studies, and the implications this has for setting and monitoring South African land degradation is the main focus of this paper more...

BACKGROUND: One of the main causes of land degradation in South Africa is bush thickening (BT) of mainly Senegalia or Vachellia species. Restoration methods are required to control BT, and to improve grass biomass production and soil conditions in South Africa. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of brush packing (BP) as a restoration method to increase grass biomass production, assess soil moisture after BP on different soil types, and document the perceptions of the local communities towards BP METHOD: Methods included cutting the stems of woodies with a diameter of at least 10 cm at knee height by chainsaw and manual clipping after which an arborocide was applied to the stumps. A neutron probe was used to measure volumetric moisture content at two different soil depths. The grass biomass was analysed using ANOVA at a confidence level of 95%. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to gather information about the perceptions of local communities towards restoration in group discussions RESULTS: The short-term data showed that the implementation of BP as restoration method increased grass biomass production. The soil texture influenced the volumetric soil moisture. Higher soil moisture content was found in the deeper clayey soils. The local participants' interpretation towards the restoration project was positive. CONCLUSION: The project increased the grazing potential and contributed to job creation to improve the well-being of the people in the community. more...

- Abstract
Monitoring of land degradation in remote rangelands, such as the Kalahari Duneveld, presents significant logistical challenges because of the need for systematic measurements of rangeland condition over time and space. The distinct vegetation dynamics and manifestation of degradation on dunes and interdunes in the Kalahari Duneveld, and their edaphic characteristics augment the difficulty with rangeland assessment. This study examined the effectiveness of using the local ecological knowledge (LEK) of livestock farmers in Mier and remotely sensed data to assess rangeland condition relative to fieldmeasured vegetation and ground cover with step-point walking transects. We used Landsat-7 ETMþ imagery to calculate the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and tasseled cap greenness to characterize vegetation cover. The multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of variance showed that the farmers' assessment of rangeland condition explained the significant difference in the field-measured grass, shrub and bare ground cover. NDVI, SAVI and tasseled cap greenness all correlated poorly to the field-measured vegetation cover because of the excess spectral noise from the high iron oxide content in the soil. The farmers' LEK has potential to contribute toward monitoring of remote Kalahari Duneveld more...

- Abstract
Land management evaluation can be made more relevant and holistic by incorporating local knowledge and perspectives. We examined whether photo elicitation and photovoice could enhance semi-structured interviews in capturing local livestock farmers’ knowledge and perspectives in a participatory evaluation in Mier and Molopo, South Africa. The participants discussed themes including veld condition, land management, and evaluation criteria. Photo elicitation provided more details (62% of instances analyzed [Mier]; 58% [Molopo]) and new information (75% of instances analyzed [Mier]; 65% [Molopo]) beyond those in semi-structured interviews. Photo elicitation also enriched data with personal or concrete examples, comparisons, contrasts, explanatory information, and revelation of attitudes or values. Photovoice created opportunities for mutual learning among the participants. The main drawbacks for the two photographic methods were additional time and equipment requirements, and the risk of omission. These two methods represent unrealized potential for supporting natural resource management research and projects more...

- Abstract
Wildfires can have significant impacts on rangeland productivity and functionality causing substantial economic losses to affected farmers. In August 2011, such wildfires swept through the North West province of South Africa, destroying large areas of grazing and farm infrastructure. There is little information available on how the regional semi-arid rangelands respond to fire. In order to increase knowledge on short-term regeneration capacities of burned rangelands, the recovery of grass phytomass, composition and diversity as well as the frequency distribution of patch types (i.e. grass-, litter- and bare patches) were assessed in the growing season following the fire. Burned and unburned sites were compared in two regional grasslands and one savanna type receiving between 480 and 700 mm rainfall y−1. Fire significantly reduced phytomass production, and lowered the grazing capacity and potential grazing days across vegetation types. In general, grass diversity, composition and relative frequencies remained unaffected documenting an overall good regeneration potential of the grass sward. An increased proportion of bare patches and decrease of litter indicated that the post-fire environment lost functionality with respect to erosion control, nutrient cycling and water infiltration. Gained insights provide valuable baseline information for future impact assessments and research into the fire dynamics of investigated vegetation types. more...

- Abstract
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and its sister conventions, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity, all aim to halt or mitigate the deterioration of the ecological processes on which life depends. Sustainable land management (SLM) is fundamental to achieving the goals of all three Conventions. Changes in land management undertaken to address dryland degradation and desertification can simultaneously reduce net greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to conservation of biodiversity. Management to protect and enhance terrestrial carbon stocks, both in vegetation and soil, is of central importance to all three conventions. Protection of biodiversity conveys stability and resilience to agro-ecosystems and increases carbon storage potential of dryland systems. SLM improves livelihoods of communities dependent on the land. Despite these complementarities between the three environmental goals, tradeoffs often arise in their pursuit. The importance of human–environment interactions to the condition of land compels attention to adaptive management. In order to reconcile concerns and agendas at a higher strategic level, identification of synergies, conflicts, trade-offs, interconnections, feedbacks and spillover effects among multiple objectives, drivers, actions, policies and time horizons are crucial. Once these issues are transparent, coordinated action can be put into place across the three multilateral environmental agreements in the development of strategies and policy measures to support SLM. more...

- Abstract
The Grassland biome is the most transformed biome in South Africa, with cultivation and other human impacts having the largest effect on pristine grasslands. Conversion of natural grassland to cropland agriculture destroys natural vegetation seed banks. When croplands on the South African Highveld are abandoned, secondary succession often leads to low diversity Hyparrhenia hirta dominated plant communities. To investigate the effect of reseeding on secondary succession and botanical diversity, various reseeding treatments of cropland restoration were established on a recently abandoned cropland at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Plots combining two seed mixtures, two seeding rates and two sowing methods were monitored and evaluated. The sowing method (plough vs rip-line) had the largest influence on the suppression of relic weeds as well as possible establishment of local non-sown species. The rip-line plots, where more resources were available due to spaces between the rip-lines, initially experienced higher densities of relic weeds followed by an increase in local non-sown species densities. Hyparrhenia hirta was one of the non-sown perennials increasing in the rip-line plots. The growth of H. hirta and relic weeds was, however, controlled in the plough plots, where species densities and phytomass production of perennial sown-in species were the highest. more...

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity. more...

To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity. more...

The article presents a study on the relationship of plant diversity and bush cover in South African rangelands of a semi-arid Kalahari savannah. It presents an analysis of response pattern in richness and evenness at the plant taxonomic and growth form levels. The results of the said study suggest a positive effect of increasing bush cover on plant diversity depending on the growth forms included in diversity estimates. more...

Once these issues are transparent, coordinated action can be put into place across the three multilateral environmental agreements in the development of strategies and policy measures to support SLM. http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/ldr.1086 more...

- Abstract
Natural remnants, such as fragmented grasslands form an integral part of the urban green infrastructure in the Grassland biome of South Africa. Nearly 30 % of natural grasslands are transformed with only 1 % formally conserved. Since grassland habitats are globally regarded as a biodiversity conservation priority, protection should be accorded outside formal conservation areas as well. However, urban grassland fragments are often regarded as highly transformed, and are therefore targeted for development rather than conservation. The aim of this study was to compare plant species composition, −diversity and -functional diversity, as well as the fine-scale biophysical landscape functionality of grassland fragments in urban and exurban areas in the vulnerable Rand Highveld Grassland vegetation type in the Tlokwe Municipal area of South Africa. Thirty selected grassland fragments were investigated along an urbanisation (urban-exurban) gradient that was quantified using several demographic- and physical variables as well as landscape metrics, each reflecting a pattern or process associated with urbanisation. Plant species composition, −diversity, and -life history traits were determined in randomly selected sample plots. Functional diversity indices were also calculated to describe the composition and distribution of plant functional traits in the selected grassland fragments. Additionally, landscape functionality, in terms of how effectively the landscape is functioning as a biophysical system, was determined using the Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) method. LFA provides information such as fine-scale resource conserving patchiness, soil surface stability, infiltration, and nutrient cycling. The fine-scale biophysical landscape function of urban and exurban landscapes are comparable, indicating that urban grassland fragments are worthy of conservation on a biophysical landscape function scale. However, differences in plant species diversity, functional trait compositi more...

- Abstract
Urbanisation creates altered environments characterised by increased human habitation, impermeable surfaces, artificial structures, landscape fragmentation, habitat loss, resulting in different resource loss pathways. The vulnerable Rand Highveld Grassland vegetation unit in the Tlokwe Municipal area, South Africa, has been extensively affected and transformed by urbanisation, agriculture, and mining. Grassland fragments in urban areas are often considered to be less species rich and less functional than in the more untransformed or “natural” exurban environments, and are therefore seldom a priority for conservation. Furthermore, urban grassland fragments are often being more intensely managed than exurban areas, such as consistent mowing in open urban areas. Four urbanisation measures acting as indicators for patterns and processes associated with urban areas were calculated for matrix areas surrounding each selected grassland fragment to quantify the position of each grassland remnant along an urbanisation gradient. The grassland fragments were objectively classified into two classes of urbanisation, namely “exurban” and “urban” based on the urbanisation measure values. Grazing was recorded in some exurban grasslands and mowing in some urban grassland fragments. Unmanaged grassland fragments were present in both urban and exurban areas. Fine-scale biophysical landscape function was determined by executing the Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) method. LFA assesses fine-scale landscape patchiness (entailing resource conserving potential and erosion resistance) and 11 soil surface indicators to produce three main LFA parameters (stability, infiltration, and nutrient cycling), which indicates how well a system is functioning in terms of fine-scale biophysical soil processes and characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of urbanisation and associated management practices on fine-scale biophysical landscape function of urban and exurban grassla more...
