Abstract

Networks of solution-processed nanomaterials are important for multiple applications in electronics, sensing and energy storage/generation. While it is known that network morphology plays a dominant role in determining the physical properties of printed networks, it remains difficult to quantify network structure. Here, we utilise FIB-SEM nanotomography to characterise the morphology of nanostructured networks. Nanometer-resolution 3D-images were obtained from printed networks of graphene nanosheets of various sizes, as well as networks of WS2 nanosheets, silver nanosheets and silver nanowires. Important morphological characteristics, including network porosity, tortuosity, pore dimensions and nanosheet orientation were extracted and linked to network resistivity. By extending this technique to interrogate the structure and interfaces within vertical printed heterostacks, we demonstrate the potential of this technique for device characterisation and optimisation., Comment: 6 figures

Abstract

This study proposed using enamel surface texture and thickness for the objective detection and monitoring of erosive tooth wear (ETW), comparing them to the standard subjective Basic Erosive Wear Evaluation (BEWE). Thirty-two subjects (n = 597 teeth) were enrolled in this longitudinal observational clinical study. Enamel thickness (by cross-polarization optical coherence tomography, CP-OCT) and 3D dental microwear parameters, i.e., area-scale fractal complexity (Asfc), anisotropy (Str), and roughness (Sa) (by white-light scanning confocal profilometry), were obtained from buccal surfaces. Buccal, occlusal, and lingual surfaces were scored for BEWE and the maximum score per tooth (BEWEMax) was determined at baseline and 12 months (M12). Data outcome relationships were evaluated (alpha = 0.05). Enamel thickness decreased (p < 0.001), BEWE scores, Sa, and Str increased (p < 0.001), while Asfc did not change at M12. Baseline BEWEBuccal correlated strongly with BEWEMax (r = 0.86, p < 0.001) and moderately with BEWELingual (r = 0.42, p < 0.001), but not with enamel thickness (r = 0.03, p = 0.43). Change (Δ) in surface texture outcomes correlated poorly but significantly with ΔBEWEBuccal (r = -0.15-0.16, p < 0.001) and did not correlate with Δenamel thickness (r = 0.02-0.09, p > 0.06). Teeth with BEWE progression revealed a greater increase in ΔSa and ΔStr. These findings suggest that enamel surface roughness can potentially determine ETW severity, and CP-OCT may be relevant for clinically monitoring enamel thickness.

18. Relative Age Effects in International Rugby Union: Consequences of Changing the Cutoff Date and Exploring Youth to Senior Transitions

Abstract

Relative age effects (RAEs) are independent of specific cutoff dates that can vary from country to country. However, the consequences of changing the selection cutoff dates within a national sport organization are unknown. Further, the transition from international youth to senior representation is yet to be explored in rugby union. Thus, the aims of this article were twofold: "Study 1" compared the birth quarter (BQ) distributions of the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) under-18 representatives based on September to August and January to December selection cutoff dates. "Study 2" explored the BQ distributions within the RFU international development pathway through analyzing the under-18, under-20, and senior representatives, as well as the BQ distributions of youth players who were subsequently capped at senior level. Chi-square analysis was used to compare BQ distributions in each sample against expected distributions. Results revealed a corresponding shift of a skewed birthdate distribution favoring chronologically older players that was mediated by specific cutoff dates (p < 0.05). Moreover, whilst RAEs were present within both youth cohorts (p < 0.05), it was not apparent at the senior level (p > 0.05). Furthermore, during the transition from international youth to senior representation, more chronologically older players were successfully capped.

19. Development and evaluation of a hexahedral mesh-morphing strategy for the knee meniscus

Abstract

The state-of-the-art for generating accurate and high-quality hexahedral meshes of irregular geometries for finite element (FE) simulations is a laborious and time-consuming endeavour. Mesh-morphing is a technique which modifies the vertices of an existing mesh to match the boundary prescribed by another. This technique has been chosen as it has the capacity to automatically create accurate and high-quality hexahedral meshes of irregular geometries from a single template. The meniscus was chosen as it is an important component of the knee and challenging structure to simulate. Hexahedral discretisation is often required due to: multi-body contact, large deformations and complex material properties (nearly-incompressible and anisotropic). In this research, a novel, automatic and general-purpose mesh-morphing strategy was developed. Additionally, several robust and thorough methodologies were developed to assess the sensitivity and validate the performance of the mesh-morphing strategy. This was achieved through performance comparisons against a state-of-the-art procedure - the multi-block method (IA-FEMesh). The performance metrics not only assessed the capacity of the mesh-morphing strategy (i.e. speed, accuracy and mesh-quality), but also the functionality for meaningful FE simulations. The mesh-morphing strategy generated 20 challenging meniscus meshes in under a minute compared to an average of 26 minutes, with comparable surface error and mesh-quality metrics to the state-of-the-art. Also, there was no significant difference in the FE simulation outcomes. The mesh-morphing strategy offers a faster, competitive and automated alternative to the semi-automatic state-of-the-art, and only required one template mesh. The strategy can already be applied to a diverse range of geometries, and with some trivial modifications can approach a larger proportion. The developed tool can be used to improve productivity and automate the development of FE models. This could enable the design of large-scale studies and assist the development of digital twins. A wide-range of industries that require automatic and accurate meshing from 3D scanning technologies could utilise this work.

Abstract

Quantum computing is an emerging technology, promising a paradigm shift in computing, and allowing for speedups in many different problems. However, quantum devices are still in their early stages, most with only a small number qubits. This places a reliance on simulation to develop quantum algorithms and to verify these devices. While there exists many algorithms for the simulation of quantum circuits, there is (at the time of writing) no tools which use OpenCL to parallelize this simulation, thereby taking advantage of devices such as GPUs while still remaining portable. In this paper, such a tool is described, including optimizations in areas such as gate application. This leads to a new approach that outperforms other popular state vector based simulators.
