BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Young people accessing alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment experience high rates of treatment disengagement, contributing to poorer outcomes. To improve outcomes, it is important to identify factors associated with treatment retention. This study measured the relationships between client characteristics, treatment characteristics, clinical severity measures and completion of treatment among young people. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This study was a retrospective analysis of routinely collected data set in residential- and community-based AOD services in New South Wales, Australia. Routinely collected data from the Network of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies' (NADA) database were used. Included individuals were aged 10-24 years and accessed treatment between 2012 and 2023 (n = 17 474). MEASUREMENTS: Variables included client-related characteristics, service characteristics and baseline measures of clinical severity [Kessler-10 (K10), EUROHIS-QoL, severity of dependence scale (SDS)]. Multivariable binary logistic regression models assessed the relationships between these characteristics and treatment completion. FINDINGS: Rates of treatment completion were highest among adolescents in community-based treatment (57%) and lowest among young adults in residential treatment (35%). Polysubstance use was negatively associated with treatment completion among adolescents [adjusted odds ratio (adjOR) = 0.71, P < 0.001] and adults (adjOR = 0.70, P < 0.001) in community-based treatment, and adolescents in residential treatment (adjOR = 0.62, P = 0.006), as was housing insecurity (adolescents in community treatment, adjOR = 0.61, P = 0.001; adults in community treatment, adjOR = 0.77, P = 0.002; adolescents in residential treatment, adjOR = 0.42, P = 0.005). Attending youth-specific services was associated with higher treatment completion rates among adults in community-based (adjOR = 1.81, P < 0.001) and residential treatment (adjOR = 1.72, P < 0.001

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Treatment completion is associated with improved alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment outcomes. Unfortunately, treatment disengagement is common, particularly among young people. We reviewed and synthesised research on AOD treatment completion and/or early disengagement among young people. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting on completion rates and/or early disengagement from psychosocial AOD treatment among adolescents and young adults. An overall estimated treatment completion rate was calculated using inverse-variance random effects meta-analysis, and random-effects meta-regression was used to identify between-study level moderators of completion rate. We completed a narrative review summarising literature on early treatment disengagement and within-study level correlates of treatment completion. Study quality was assessed using the EPHPP. RESULTS: Of the 6158 studies screened, we retained 410 for full text review and included 98 studies in the review. Treatment completion rates were reported in 88 studies, and early disengagement rates were reported in 13. The estimated overall treatment completion rate was 59 % (95 % CI=57-61 %), with experimental studies reporting higher rates of completion than observational studies. There was limited evidence for demographic or substance-related correlates of treatment completion. Contingency management was associated with increased completion rates, as was family-based intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Disengagement from AOD treatment among youth populations is common and contributes to poor treatment outcomes. Existing research has yielded little consensus on the factors associated with treatment completion. The use of contingency management strategies and involving family/social supports in treatment were identified as potential avenues for promoting ongoing treatment engagement.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are an important aspect of assessing and improving women's experiences of person-centred care during treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). This scoping review aimed to 1) examine the extent, type, and characteristics of evidence regarding women's OUD treatment experiences, and 2) describe the extent to which PREMs and person-centred care principles are incorporated within research methods. METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), we conducted a scoping review to identify peer-reviewed articles on women's OUD treatment experiences. Data were extracted from 39 included studies and synthesised based on study design, method of assessment/analysis (including use of PREMs), key findings, and the integration of person-centred care principles. RESULTS: Analysis of included studies revealed a predominance of qualitative research focused on women's experiences of pharmacological OUD treatment (methadone and/or buprenorphine) in Western countries. Women in these studies reported predominantly negative or mixed experiences of treatment. Few studies used validated PREMs and there was a lack of direct assessment or focus on recognised person-centred care principles. However, common categories of outcomes/findings identified in results across studies broadly aligned with person-centred care principles (e.g., fast access to reliable healthcare, effective treatment by trusted professionals), emphasising their applicability to women's experiences of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Although there has been an increased focus on women's experiences of treatment for OUD in recent years, results highlighted room for improvement regarding the systematic and comprehensive assessment of women's experiences across different contexts. INTRODUCTION: Ongoing improvement to residential treatment for substance use disorders is critical as it typically targets people with the highest need. Assessing multiple recovery indicators, such as cravings and mental health, at intake and following discharge is important in evaluating treatment effectiveness. To refine services, research should explore whether there are subgroups of individuals with different patterns of recovery following treatment. METHODS: Participants (n = 554) were attending Australian Salvation Army residential treatment services for substance use issues. Data were collected by surveys at intake and 3-month post-discharge ('early recovery'). Recovery indicators were cravings, confidence to resist substance use and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. Subgroups of individuals based on these recovery indicators ('profiles') were identified using repeated measures latent profile analysis. RESULTS: Five profiles were identified, three profiles improved over time (81.4%) and two (18.6%) deteriorated across all indicators. These two profiles had the poorest mental health and addiction scores at intake and reported shorter time in treatment compared to the three profiles showing improvement. There were no demographic or substance type differences between profiles. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: By considering initial severity and multiple recovery indicators at early recovery, this study suggests that individuals at-risk of poor early recovery can be identified at intake. This opens opportunities for tailored treatment approaches to address both mental health and substance use, thereby potentially improving treatment outcomes and reducing the risk of relapse.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease and cancers are the leading cause of mortality amongst people accessing treatment for alcohol and other drug use. The current study aimed to examine risk factors for chronic disease amongst people attending residential alcohol and other drug treatment services. METHODS: Participants (N = 325) were attending residential alcohol and other drug treatment services across Australia. Diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk scores were calculated using established risk estimation algorithms. Differences in existing health conditions, risk factors for chronic diseases and risk algorithms were calculated for males and females. RESULTS: In addition to alcohol and other drug use (including tobacco use), 95% of the sample had at least one other risk factor for chronic disease. Of participants not already diagnosed, 36% were at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and 11% had a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The heart age of participants was 11 years older than actual age (Mage = 40.63, Mheart age = 52.41). Males had a higher cardiovascular disease risk than females. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: A large proportion of people accessing residential alcohol and other drug treatment were at risk of chronic disease. Future research is needed that uses objective indicators of physical health. Such research will help to develop our understanding of prevention and intervention initiatives that could be adopted by treatment providers to improve the physical health of their consumers.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is commonly treated with opioid analgesics despite evidence that these medicines provide minimal or no benefit for LBP and have an established profile of harms. International guidelines discourage or urge caution with the use of opioids for back pain; however, doctors and patients lack practical strategies to help them implement the guidelines. This trial will evaluate a multifaceted intervention to support general practitioners (GPs) and their patients with LBP implement the recommendations in the latest opioid prescribing guidelines. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a cluster randomised controlled trial that will evaluate the effect of educational outreach visits to GPs promoting opioid stewardship alongside non-pharmacological interventions including heat wrap and patient education about the possible harms and benefits of opioids, on GP prescribing of opioids medicines dispensed. At least 40 general practices will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to either the intervention or control (no outreach visits; GP provides usual care). A total of 410 patient-participants (205 in each arm) who have been prescribed an opioid for LBP will be enrolled via participating general practices. Follow-up of patient-participants will occur over a 1-year period. The primary outcome will be the cumulative dose of opioid dispensed that was prescribed by study GPs over 1 year from the enrolment visit (in morphine milligram equivalent dose). Secondary outcomes include prescription of opioid medicines, benzodiazepines, gabapentinoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by study GPs or any GP, health services utilisation and patient-reported outcomes such as pain, quality of life and adverse events. Analysis will be by intention to treat, with a health economics analysis also planned. AIMS: Comprehensively investigate prescribing in usual care of hospitalized older people with respect to polypharmacy; potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) according to Beers criteria; and cumulative anticholinergic and sedative medication exposure calculated with Drug Burden Index (DBI). Specifically, to quantify exposure to these measures on admission, changes between admission and discharge, associations with adverse outcomes and medication costs. METHODS: Established new retrospective inpatient cohort of 2000 adults aged ≥75 years, consecutively admitted to 6 hospitals in Sydney, Australia, with detailed information on medications, clinical characteristics and outcomes. Conducted cross-sectional analyses of index admission data from cohort. RESULTS: Cohort had mean (standard deviation) age 86.0 (5.8) years, 59% female, 21% from residential aged care. On admission, prevalence of polypharmacy was 77%, PIMs 34% and DBI > 0 in 53%. From admission to discharge, mean difference (95% confidence interval) in total number of medications increased 1.05 (0.92, 1.18); while prevalence of exposure to PIMs (-3.8% [-5.4, -2.1]) and mean DBI score (-0.02 [-0.04, -0.01]) decreased. PIMs and DBI score were associated with increased risks (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]) of falls (PIMs 1.63 [1.28, 2.08]; DBI score 1.21[1.00, 1.46]) and delirium (PIMs 1.76 [1.38, 1.46]; DBI score 1.42 [1.19, 1.71]). Each measure was associated with increased risk of adverse drug reactions (polypharmacy 1.42 [1.19, 1.71]; PIMs 1.87 [1.40, 2.49]; DBI score 1.90 [1.55, 2.15]). Cost (AU$/patient/hospital day) of medications contributing to PIMs and DBI was low ($0.29 and $0.88). CONCLUSION: In this large cohort of older inpatients, usual hospital care results in an increase in number of medications and small reductions in PIMs and DBI, with variable associations with adverse outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most challenging aspects of conducting intervention trials among people who experience severe mental illness (SMI) and who smoke tobacco, is recruitment. In our parent "QuitLink" randomized controlled trial (RCT), slower than expected peer researcher facilitated recruitment, along with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, necessitated an adaptive recruitment response. The objectives of the present study were to: (i) describe adaptive peer researcher facilitated recruitment strategies; (ii) explore the effectiveness of these strategies; (iii) investigate whether recruitment strategies reached different subgroups of participants; and (iv) examine the costs and resources required for implementing these strategies. Finally, we offer experience-based lessons in a Peer Researcher Commentary. METHODS: People were included in the RCT if they smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day and were accessing mental health support from the project's two partnering mental health organizations in Victoria, Australia. The majority of people accessing these services will have been diagnosed with SMI. Recruitment occurred over 2 years. We began with peer facilitated recruitment strategies delivered face-to-face, then replaced this with direct mail postcards followed by telephone contact. In the final 4 months of the study, we began online recruitment, broadening it to people who smoked and were accessing support or treatment (including from general practitioners) for mental health and/or alcohol or other drug problems, anywhere in the state of Victoria. Differences between recruitment strategies on key participant variables were assessed. We calculated the average cost per enrolee of the different recruitment approaches. RESULTS: Only 109 people were recruited from a target of 382: 29 via face-to-face (March 2019 to April 2020), 66 from postcards (May 2020 to November 2020), and 14 from online (November to December 2020 and January to March 2021) strategies.

While magnetron sputtering has been used to deposit metals onto a range of solid substrates, its application to produce porous heterogeneous catalysts in powder form is relatively unstudied. Here, magnetron sputtered Pd heterogeneous catalyst powders were prepared using a shaker operated at optimal experimental settings to give uniform coverage of the powders, and tested in the abatement of exhaust emissions in natural gas fuelled engines via the oxidation of methane. Pd nanoparticles were deposited onto alumina, titania and zeolite supports, in powder form. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the characteristic structure of each support was maintained following sputtering. The quantity of Pd increased (a) with deposition time and (b) as a function of support in the order alumina < zeolite < titania. The methane oxidation activity, measured as the temperatures at which 10% and 50% conversions were observed, T and T , increased with Pd content for each support and was most active over zeolite catalysts despite a greater amount of Pd present on titania. Overall, the findings demonstrate that magnetron sputtering is a viable method to prepare active precious metal based catalyst powders. Furthermore, this rapid one-step process is complete after 10–20 min deposition time and avoids any metal salt impurities or the need for solvent as required in traditional synthesis methods. 10 50

The intrinsic properties of vertically aligned graphene (VG), such as a high ratio of exposed active edge sites compared to inert basal sites, non-stacking morphology and large surface-to-volume ratio make it applicable to numerous advanced technologies such as sensors, flexible electronics and fuel cells. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition has emerged as a promising technique to synthesise graphene at lower temperatures than a conventional chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process, providing a better control over the deposition parameters to tailor graphene properties. This study presents a cost effective, scalable, single step synthesis of a high quality VG at low temperatures. The samples were synthesised in a microwave (MW) assisted CVD reactor, which allowed for the decomposition of CH4 and H2 gas mixtures in Ar as a carrier gas, and VG growth directly onto Si wafer substrates without any additional heat applied to the substrate. Deposition conditions, such as MW power, gas ratio, and substrate-to-plasma separation were optimized to tailor the morphology, growth rate and electrochemical performance of the VG. The physiochemical analysis revealed that the fabricated VG consisted of high quality vertically aligned sp2 graphene, whilst a cyclic voltammetry analysis confirmed that the structures are electrochemically active and demonstrate a typical characteristics of quasi-reversible processes.

The use of photocatalytic materials in plasma systems has the potential to enhance the selectivity and yield of desired products. However, the surface interaction between the photocatalyst and plasma is a complex process that is not well understood. This work presents a comprehensive study of the effects of combining titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts with non-thermal atmospheric pressure nitrogen-oxygen plasmas, which increases the production of ozone and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) while limiting the formation of harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) by products. TiO2 coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering onto barium titanate (BaTiO3) particulates for use within a packed bed dielectric barrier discharge reactor (DBD). The presence of titanium dioxide can affect the plasma chemistry in the DBD by acting as a sink for atomic oxygen, through photocatalytic formation of superoxide anion radical (O2-), and alteration of the dielectric constant of the BaTiO3 particulates. This work explains the complex interaction of these effects on oxygen and nitrogen plasma chemistry. The effect of the photocatalyst surface properties, gas composition and residence time on the reaction pathways for the formation of ozone and nitrogen oxides (NxOy) were investigated. The photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide was improved by annealing the coated surface, and was subsequently found to enable the formation of ozone, increase the formation of N2O5 while significantly decreasing the formation of harmful NO2 and N2O with a residence time of 0.011 s

Bi TiO /Bi Ti O composite photocatalyst was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally used titanium dioxide, to tackle the well-known drawbacks of fast charge-carriers recombination and low quantum efficiency of TiO . Polycrystalline Bi TiO /Bi Ti O thin films were produced by pulsed DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering, a method of high industrial relevance, and compared to titanium dioxide coatings produced with the same technique. Following the deposition process, optimum thermal treatment temperature and length were established, to obtain crystallisation. The synthesised coatings were thoroughly analysed with a range of techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS and AFM. The photocatalytic properties of Bi TiO /Bi Ti O composite were assessed through methylene blue degradation and E. coli inactivation tests under UV-A irradiation. The results indicated considerably higher efficiency of the composite photocatalyst when compared to TiO . Moreover, the reusability assessment of Bi TiO /Bi Ti O thin films revealed an incremental performance increase after each consecutive test, leading to a 6-fold increase in photocatalytic activity between the first and 15th cycle. Time-resolved photoluminescence and XPS analysis highlighted an increased presence of oxygen vacancies, forming over repeated usage of bismuth titanate, leading to longer lifetimes of photogenerated species and enhanced photocatalytic performance. 12 20 4 3 12 2 12 20 4 3 12 12 20 4 3 12 2 12 20 4 3 12

Bacterial retention and organic fouling on meat preparation surfaces can be influenced by several factors. Surfaces with linear topographies and defined chemistries were used to determine how the orientation of the surface features affected cleaning efficacy. Fine polished (irregular linear) stainless steel (FPSS), titanium coated fine polished (irregular linear) stainless steel (TiFP), and topographically regular, linear titanium coated surfaces (RG) were fouled with Escherichia coli mixed with a meat exudate (which was utilised as a conditioning film). Surfaces were cleaned along or perpendicular to the linear features for one, five, or ten wipes. The bacteria were most easily removed from the titanium coated and regular featured surfaces. The direction of cleaning (along or perpendicular to the surface features) did not influence the amount of bacteria retained, but meat extract was more easily removed from the surfaces when cleaned in the direction along the linear surface features. Following ten cleans, there was no significant difference in the amount of cells or meat exudate retained on the surfaces cleaned in either direction. This study demonstrated that for the E. coli cells, the TiFP and RG surfaces were easiest to clean. However, the direction of the clean was important for the removal of the meat exudate from the surfaces.

Using a novel measure of own-investor secrecy, we find that non-disclosure to a fund's own investors, unlike non-disclosure to the public, does not signal hedge fund skill. Own-investor secretive funds do not significantly outperform transparent funds through an up market, and they significantly underperform their (sub)strategy-matched peers through the down market of the Global Financial Crisis. These results are robust to using factor models and controls for fund illiquidity, complexity, concentration, size, and leverage. These patterns are consistent with funds loading on option-like risks, and additional tests show that secretive funds are exposed to risks akin to put-option writing. Measures of skill proposed by prior research also do not suggest secretive funds possess superior skill. Through the up-market portion of our sample, secretive funds have lower ow-to-performance sensitivity, even controlling for illiquidity, suggesting that investors view secretive and transparent funds differently.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: There has been a rapid increase in smoking crystalline methamphetamine in Australia. We compare the clinical and demographic characteristics of those who smoke versus inject the drug in a cohort of people who use methamphetamine. DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants (N = 151) were dependent on methamphetamine, aged 18-60 years, enrolled in a pharmacotherapy trial for methamphetamine dependence, and reported either injecting (n = 54) or smoking (n = 97) methamphetamine. Measures included the Timeline Followback, Severity of Dependence Scale, Amphetamine Withdrawal Questionnaire, Craving Experience Questionnaire and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (symptoms of depression, hostility, psychosis and suicidality). Simultaneous regression was used to identify independent demographic correlates of smoking methamphetamine and to compare the clinical characteristics of participants who smoked versus injected. RESULTS: Compared to participants who injected methamphetamine, those who smoked methamphetamine were younger and less likely to be unemployed, have a prison history or live alone. Participants who smoked methamphetamine used methamphetamine on more days in the past 4 weeks than participants who injected methamphetamine (26 vs. 19 days, P = 0.001); they did not differ significantly in their severity of methamphetamine dependence, withdrawal, craving or psychiatric symptoms (P > 0.05). After adjustment for demographic differences, participants who smoked had lower craving [b (SE) = -1.1 (0.5), P = 0.021] and were less likely to report psychotic symptoms [b (SE) = -1.8 (0.7), P = 0.013] or antidepressant use [b (SE) = -1.1 (0.5), P = 0.022]. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Smoking crystalline methamphetamine is associated with a younger less marginalised demographic profile than injecting methamphetamine, but a similarly severe clinical profile.

Transplant recipients are at high-risk of anal squamous cell cancer. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and assess characteristics associated with results METHODS: We recruited kidney transplant recipients in a single-center, 2015-2018. Participants completed a clinical questionnaire and received an anal-swab sent for HPV-DNA and cytological testing RESULTS: A total of 97 (74%) of 125 recipients approached consented to participate. Participants were median 47 (IQR 40-55) years, 60% male and median 4.5 (IQR .9-13) months-since-transplant. Of 86 assessable samples, at least one HPV genotype was detected in 15 (17%) participants; 1 (1%) HPV16, 8 (9%) other high-risk HPV. Of 76 assessable cytology samples, 9 (12%) showed evidence of abnormality; 1 (1%) HSIL, 1 (1%) atypical-squamous-cells, cannot exclude HSIL. Both HSIL recipients had high-risk HPV and biopsy confirmed HSIL. High-risk HPV was detected in six (9%) recipients with normal cytology. History of sexually transmitted infection, and abnormal cervical pap smear in women, was associated with high-risk HPV and HSIL CONCLUSIONS: High-risk HPV and HSIL testing may identify kidney transplant recipients at higher risk of anal cancer. Longitudinal studies are needed to describe the natural history of anal cancer in transplant recipients.

© 2020 by the authors. Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited onto sola-lime glass substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering. Fine stainless steel mesh sheets with different aperture sizes were applied as masks over glass substrates to allow the deposition of the coatings with micro-patterned structures and, therefore, enhanced surface area. Non-patterned titania films were deposited for comparison purposes. The titanium dioxide films were post-deposition annealed at 873 K for crystallinity development and then extensively analysed by a number of analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), optical and stylus profilometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of non-patterned and micro-patterned titania films was assessed under UV light irradiation by three different methods; namely methylene blue, stearic acid, and oleic acid degradation. The results revealed that the micro-patterned coatings significantly outperformed non-patterned titania in all types of photocatalytic tests, due to their higher values of surface area. Increasing the aperture of the stainless steel mesh resulted in lower photocatalytic activity and lower surface area values, compared to the coatings deposited through a smaller aperture mesh.

Extant research shows that stock returns of investable firms are highly sensitive to foreign market and global information shocks, suggesting that having foreign investors might insulate investable firms from shocks to local fundamentals. Examining 24 emerging markets, we find that both investable and non-investable firms are sensitive to local monetary policy shocks. This allays the concern that emerging-market opening reduces the efficacy of local monetary policy. We also find that in 11 countries (46% of our country-sample), investable firms are more sensitive to local shocks than non-investable firms. Differences in leverage, stock liquidity, size, domestic product-market exposure, or industry cyclicality do not drive this finding.

Objective: The aims of this study were to profile the most common complaints and to examine whether any demographic factors are associated with receiving a complaint for five health professions in Australia. Methods: A national cohort study was conducted for all complaints received for medicine, nursing/midwifery, dentistry, pharmacy and psychology from 1 July 2012 to 31 December 2013 (18 months). Data were collected from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), the New South Wales (NSW) Health Professional Councils' Authority and the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission. The frequency and risk of complaints were summarised for the five professions and by demographic information. Results: There were 545 283 practitioners registered with AHPRA between 1 July 2012 and 31 December 2013, consisting of 20 935 dentists, 101 066 medical practitioners, 363 040 nurses/midwives, 28 370 pharmacists and 31 872 psychologists. During the study period there were 12 616 complaints, corresponding to an annual rate of 1.5 per 100 practitioners. Complaints were most common for doctors and dentists (5% per annum per practitioner) and least common for nurses/midwives (0.5% per annum per practitioner). Sex (P < 0.01), age (P < 0.01) and country of birth (P < 0.01) were all associated with risk of complaint. The most common complaints were clinical care (44% of all complaints), medication (10%) and health impairment of the practitioner (8%). Types of complaints varied by profession, sex and age. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to summarise the process and outcomes of complaints from five regulated health professions in Australia, and to compare these between the national and New South Wales (NSW) systems. METHODS:This is a retrospective cohort study of all complaints lodged from 1 July 2012 to 31 December 2013 for medicine, nursing and midwifery, dentistry, psychology and pharmacy registered practitioners. Data were extracted from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, the NSW Health Professional Councils' Authority and the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission databases. The main outcome measures were frequencies and percentages of process decisions and outcomes. RESULTS:Systems differed in classification of complaints as conduct (national 47%; NSW 22%) and performance (national 45%; NSW 71%). Thirty-eight per cent of complaints were investigated or managed through a health or performance stream (national 40%; NSW 34%), but the national system investigated more matters (national 35%; NSW 6%). Over 50% of complaints resulted in 'no further action' (national 60%; NSW 70%). The most common action was caution or counsel (national 12%; NSW 15%), followed by conditions, (national 10%; NSW 5%). Practitioner registration surrender was more common with the NSW than national system (national 0.1%; NSW 1.3%), but registration suspensions or cancellations were similar (national 0.6%; NSW 1.0%). CONCLUSION:The main difference between the two systems is the administrative decision as to how complaints are assessed. In NSW, a classification of a complaint as 'performance' usually means the complaint is not investigated; rather, the practitioner is assessed by peers and may be required to undergo further education and training. Bismuth oxide – titanium dioxide composite materials were produced by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering onto two types of commercially available titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The use of an oscillating bowl enabled deposition of bismuth oxide uniformly onto loose powders, in contrast to solid substrates typically used for the conventional magnetron sputtering processes. Variation of the deposition time allowed the production of composite materials with different amounts of bismuth oxide. The composite materials, as well as uncoated titania powders, were extensively analysed by a range of analytical techniques, including SEM/EDX, XRD, BET, XPS, TEM and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Photocatalytic properties of the materials were assessed under simulated visible light irradiation via degradation of acetone and methanol through measurements of carbon dioxide evolution. Additionally, the composite materials were characterised with a newly developed technique of reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy in order to obtain information on the distribution of electron traps. Bismuth oxide was found in crystalline β-Bi 2 O 3 form on both types of substrates without any additional heat treatment applied. Though the distribution of bismuth oxide on titanium dioxide was found to depend strongly on particle size and deposition time used, the composite materials exhibited significantly enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity compared to either of the commercial titania materials used as a substrate.

Background: Executive functioning impairment is common in substance use disorder and is a major risk factor for poor treatment outcomes, including treatment drop-out and relapse. Cognitive remediation interventions seek to improve executive functioning and offer a promising approach to increase the efficacy of alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatments and improve long-term therapeutic outcomes. This protocol describes a study funded by the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation that assesses the effectiveness of delivering a six-week group-based intervention of cognitive remediation in an ecologically valid sample of people attending residential AOD treatment services. We primarily aim to investigate whether cognitive remediation will be effective in improving executive functioning and treatment retention rates. We will also evaluate if cognitive remediation may reduce long-term AOD use and rates of health service utilisation, as well as improve personal goal attainment, quality of life, and client satisfaction with treatment. In addition, the study will involve an economic analysis of the cost of delivering cognitive remediation. Methods/design: The study uses a stepped wedge cluster randomised design, where randomisation will occur at the cluster level. Participants will be recruited from ten residential AOD treatment services provided by the non-government sector. The intervention will be delivered in 12 one-hour group-based sessions over a period of six weeks. All participants who are expected to receive treatment for the duration of the six-week intervention will be asked to participate in the study. The clusters of participants who are randomly assigned to the treatment condition will complete cognitive remediation in addition to treatment as usual (TAU). BACKGROUND: This is an excerpt from chapter 4 of the annual registry report from the Australia and New Zealand islet and pancreas transplant registry. The full report is available at http://anziptr.org/reports/. METHODS: We report data for all allogeneic islet isolation and transplant activity from 2002 to end 2017. Solid organ pancreas transplantation activity is reported separately. New Zealand does not have an islet transplant program. Data analysis was performed using Stata software version 14 (StataCorp, College Station, TX). RESULTS: From 2002 to 2017, a total of 104 allogeneic islet transplants were performed in 62 recipients. CONCLUSIONS: The number of islet transplants performed in Australia was slightly lower in 2017 but continues to increase over time.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds are a neuroimaging biomarker of stroke risk. A crucial clinical question is whether cerebral microbleeds indicate patients with recent ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack in whom the rate of future intracranial haemorrhage is likely to exceed that of recurrent ischaemic stroke when treated with antithrombotic drugs. We therefore aimed to establish whether a large burden of cerebral microbleeds or particular anatomical patterns of cerebral microbleeds can identify ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack patients at higher absolute risk of intracranial haemorrhage than ischaemic stroke. METHODS: We did a pooled analysis of individual patient data from cohort studies in adults with recent ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Cohorts were eligible for inclusion if they prospectively recruited adult participants with ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack; included at least 50 participants; collected data on stroke events over at least 3 months follow-up; used an appropriate MRI sequence that is sensitive to magnetic susceptibility; and documented the number and anatomical distribution of cerebral microbleeds reliably using consensus criteria and validated scales. Our prespecified primary outcomes were a composite of any symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage or ischaemic stroke, symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage, and symptomatic ischaemic stroke. We registered this study with the PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews, number CRD42016036602. FINDINGS: Between Jan 1, 1996, and Dec 1, 2018, we identified 344 studies. BACKGROUND: There are currently no approved pharmacotherapies for managing methamphetamine dependence. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been found to reduce the craving for methamphetamine and other drugs, but its effect on methamphetamine use and other clinically related endpoints are uncertain. The N-ICE trial is evaluating the safety and efficacy of NAC as a take-home pharmacotherapy for methamphetamine dependence. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a two-arm parallel double-blind placebo-controlled three-site randomised trial (ratio 1:1) using permuted block randomisation, with variable block sizes. It is stratified by site, sex and whether the methamphetamine is injected or not. Participants (N = 180; 60 per site) need to be dependent on methamphetamine, interested in reducing their methamphetamine use and not currently receiving treatment for substance use disorders. The trial is being conducted in outpatient settings in Melbourne, Geelong and Wollongong, Australia. Participants will receive either 2400 mg oral NAC or a matched placebo, delivered as a take-home medication for 12 weeks. Two 600 mg capsules are self-administered in the morning and two more in the evening. Adherence is being monitored using eCAP™ medication bottle lids, which record the date and time of each occasion the bottle is opened. The primary outcome is methamphetamine use during the 12-week trial medication period, measured as (a) days of use, assessed using the timeline followback, and (b) methamphetamine-positive saliva tests, taken weekly. Secondary measures include weekly assessment of methamphetamine craving, severity of methamphetamine dependence, methamphetamine withdrawal symptoms and psychiatric symptoms (depression, suicidality, psychotic symptoms and hostility). Introduction: Although smokers with severe mental illnesses (SSMI) make quit attempts at comparable levels to other smokers, fewer are successful in achieving smoking cessation. Specialized smoking cessation treatments targeting their needs can be effective but have not been widely disseminated. Telephone delivered interventions, including by quitlines, show promise. However, few SSMI contact quitlines and few are referred to them by health professionals. Mental health peer workers can potentially play an important role in supporting smoking cessation. This study will apply a pragmatic model using peer workers to engage SSMI with a customized quitline service, forming the "Quitlink" intervention. Methods: A multi-center prospective, cluster-randomized, open, blinded endpoint (PROBE) trial. Over 3 years, 382 smokers will be recruited from mental health services in Victoria, Australia. Following completion of baseline assessment, a brief intervention will be delivered by a peer worker. Participants will then be randomly allocated either to no further intervention, or to be referred and contacted by the Victorian Quitline and offered a targeted 8-week cognitive behavioral intervention along with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Follow-up measures will be administered at 2-, 5-, and 8-months post-baseline. The primary outcome is 6 months continuous abstinence from end of treatment with biochemical verification. Secondary outcomes include 7-day point prevalence abstinence from smoking, increased quit attempts, and reductions in cigarettes per day, cravings and withdrawal, mental health symptoms, and other substance use, and improvements in quality of life. Introduction: Smoking is a major cause of disease burden and reduced quality of life for people with severe mental illness (SMI). It places significant resource pressure on health systems and financial stress on smokers with SMI (SSMI). Telephone-based smoking cessation interventions have been shown to be cost effective in general populations. However, evidence suggests that SSMI are less likely to be referred to quitlines, and little is known about the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of such interventions that specifically target SSMI. The Quitlink randomized controlled trial for accessible smoking cessation support for SSMI aims to bridge this gap. This paper describes the protocol for evaluating the cost effectiveness of Quitlink. Methods: Quitlink will be implemented in the Australian setting, utilizing the existing mental health peer workforce to link SSMI to a tailored quitline service. The effectiveness of Quitlink will be evaluated in a clustered randomized controlled trial. A cost-effectiveness evaluation will be conducted alongside the Quitlink clustered randomized controlled trial (RCT) with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) calculated for the cost (AUD) per successful quit and quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained at 8 months compared with usual care from both health care system and limited societal perspectives. Financial implications for study participants will also be investigated. A modeled cost-effectiveness analysis will also be conducted to estimate future costs and benefits associated with any treatment effect observed during the trial. Results will be extrapolated to estimate the cost effectiveness of rolling out Quitlink nationally. Sensitivity analyses will be undertaken to assess the impact on results from plausible variations in all modeled variables. Discussion: SSMI require additional support to quit. © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The methane oxidation reaction was investigated over Pd and Ni doped hydroxyapatite (HAP) catalysts. All catalysts were evaluated in both their reduced and oxidised forms, and the behaviour of the metals in the reaction was investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that the reaction proceeds through a redox cycle between metal oxide and reduced metal, however more stable catalysts with higher conversions were observed when the catalysts were pre-treated in oxygen. After CH 4 oxidation, all the samples were tested towards coke formation using TGA analysis; results showed that all the catalysts were resistant to the coking process under the conditions studied.

Screen-printed electrochemical sensing platforms, due to their scales of economy and high reproducibility, can provide a useful approach to translate laboratory-based electrochemistry into the field. An important factor when utilising screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) is the determination of their real electrochemical surface area, which allows for the benchmarking of these SPEs and is an important parameter in quality control. In this paper, we consider the use of cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry to allow for the determination of the real electrochemical area of screen-printed electrochemical sensing platforms, highlighting to experimentalists the various parameters that need to be diligently considered and controlled in order to obtain useful measurements of the real electroactive area.

Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited by the reactive ion-assisted sputtering method from titanium targets at various partial pressures and deposition parameters. The films were deposited onto substrates at temperatures ranging from room-temperature conditions to 722 K. A selection of thin films was post-deposited annealed at temperatures up to 972 K for 10 min and characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and subsequently analysed to assess their photocatalytic activity. Micro-Raman characterization revealed that the as-deposited films had either predominant amorphous, rutile-like structures, anatase-like structures or anatase-rutile mixed structures. The thin films deposited with a high substrate temperature and with energy assistance from the ion source tended to be amorphous, while films deposited on a hot substrate without ion energy assistance tended to have a mixed crystalline phase. On subsequent annealing the amorphous films changed to a rutile structure at temperatures above 672 K, while mixed anatase-rutile films changed to predominant rutile structures only after thermal treatments above 872 K. Thus, this study has revealed an astonishing persistence of the anatase-rutile mixed phase at very high temperatures and showed the possible existence of a key transition temperature at 672 K, where it was possible to see a transformation from amorphous or mixed phase to a rutile or dominant rutile mixed phase. Photocatalytic tests were undertaken by using a novel method consisting of observing the degradation of a film of stearic acid by the thin films under artificial UV radiation. Of the films investigated those with anatase-rutile mixed phases showed the greatest photoactivity. This work was essential in the understanding of the correlation between growth deposition conditions, phase transitions and photocatalytic activity. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of thermal treatment on the morphology (crystalline phase and size) and photocatalytic activity of freshly prepared TiO 2 nano-powder is communicated. TiO 2 nano-powders, prepared by hydrolyzing titanium tetraisopropoxide at room temperature, were all dried at 382 K and subsequently calcined at different temperatures, for 1 h, up to 1172 K. Raman analysis of each thermally treated sample exhibited different titania phase structures. Up to 772 K a mixture of brookite and anatase phases was observed, while a mixture of all three phases, i.e. anatase, brookite and rutile, was observed at 872 K, with a rutile only phase at 1097 K and above. The photocatalytic activity of all samples was assessed by means of the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange dye (MeO). All anatase-brookite compositions exhibited high photocatalytic activity with the rate of degradation decreasing with increasing calcination temperature, which coincides with (i) a slight increase of the anatase phase, (ii) a slight decrease of the brookite phase, and (iii) a gradual increase of the crystallite size of all phases. The greatest photocatalytic activity was observed for the sample calcined at 382 K, which contained the highest amount of brookite (in the presence of anatase as the dominant phase), while the lowest rate was observed for the pure rutile sample.

METHODS: We report data for all solid organ pancreas transplant activity from inception in 1984 to end 2017. Islet-cell transplantation activity is reported elsewhere. Data analysis was performed using Stata software version 14 (StataCorp, College Station, TX). RESULTS: From 1984 to 2017 a total of 809 solid organ pancreas transplants have been performed in Australia and New Zealand, in 790 individuals. In 2017, 52 people received a pancreas transplant. By center, this was; Auckland (4), Monash (17), and Westmead (31). In 2017, 51 transplants were simultaneous pancreas kidney, whereas 1 was pancreas after kidney, and none were pancreas transplant alone. CONCLUSIONS: The number of pancreas transplants performed in Australia and New Zealand was slightly lower in 2017 but continues to increase over time.

We examine the impact of rivals’ competitive activities on firms’ quantity-of-capital constraints in 60 countries. Prior work shows that competition increases the costs of debt and equity, which reduce the economic profit from investment. Capital constraints, however, may prevent firms from exploiting all positive NPV projects. Using unique survey data and several econometric techniques, we address endogeneity problems that affect both capital constraints and rivals’ competitive activities. We find that rivals’ competitive activities are positively associated with firms’ capital constraints and are more strongly correlated with capital constraints than banking sector competition. We also show that quantity-of-capital constraints are negatively related to firm growth, incremental to the cost of capital.

BACKGROUND: The mental and physical health of individuals with a psychotic illness are typically poor. Access to psychosocial interventions is important but currently limited. Telephone-delivered interventions may assist. In the current systematic review, we aim to summarise and critically analyse evidence for telephone-delivered psychosocial interventions targeting key health priorities in adults with a psychotic disorder, including (i) relapse, (ii) adherence to psychiatric medication and/or (iii) modifiable cardiovascular disease risk behaviours. METHODS: Ten peer-reviewed and four grey literature databases were searched for English-language studies examining psychosocial telephone-delivered interventions targeting relapse, medication adherence and/or health behaviours in adults with a psychotic disorder. Study heterogeneity precluded meta-analyses. RESULTS: Twenty trials [13 randomised controlled trials (RCTs)] were included, involving 2473 participants (relapse prevention = 867; medication adherence = 1273; and health behaviour = 333). Five of eight RCTs targeting relapse prevention and one of three targeting medication adherence reported at least 50% of outcomes in favour of the telephone-delivered intervention. The two health-behaviour RCTs found comparable levels of improvement across treatment conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Although most interventions combined telephone and face-to-face delivery, there was evidence to support the benefit of entirely telephone-delivered interventions. Telephone interventions represent a potentially feasible and effective option for improving key health priorities among people with psychotic disorders. Further methodologically rigorous evaluations are warranted.
