Abstract

This article critically evaluates the idea that the division between objectivity and subjectivity can illuminate the relationship between social scientific and lay perspectives on the social world. It examines a conceptualization which associates objectivity with a grasp of the features of the object of investigation and associates subjectivity with the potential for lay actors to suffer from misapprehensions. The article explores how this division is used in critical social science, such that the critical perspective of the sociologist is seen as objective, whereas the perspectives of lay actors are seen as subjective and always potentially problematic. The article explores Michael Burawoy's analysis of objectivity and subjectivity within the context of a critical social scientific appraisal of the labour process. Contrary to Burawoy's approach, this article postulates that a meaningful dialogue between sociologists and lay actors can only be achieved if the objectivity of social scientific accounts is not assumed. Abstract

In 1964, the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan opened its doors to future surgeons and leaders in the field. Today, we are celebrating the 60-year history of the program and its significant contributions to the field. Beginning under the leadership of Reed O. Dingman, MD, DDS, the program began with three faculty members and two independent surgical residents. Since that time, it has expanded dramatically to include 24 faculty members and 28 integrated plastic surgery residents. The goals of the program have always been to achieve excellence in all three of our academic missions including clinical care, teaching, and research. Annually, the program sees an average of 35,000 outpatient clinic visits, 4,000 major operations, 200 peer-reviewed publications, $5,000,000 in research spending, and residents who are well trained and highly competitive for fellowships of their choosing every single year. Through scientific collaborations, academic exchanges, and medical missions, the program's influence has spread beyond Michigan, reaching the entire world. In addition to training world-renowned surgeons, Michigan's faculty and graduates have assumed leadership roles in prestigious professional organizations, scientific journals, and research foundations. Abstract

The Annonaceous acetogenin cis-sylvaticin displays potent antitumour activity. Using permanganate-promoted oxidative cyclisation of 1,5-dienes we have synthesised the C3-17 and C18-34 fragments and coupled them by a tethered ring-closing metathesis to provide the cis-sylvaticin backbone with the correct stereochemical configuration. (-)-Galanthamine is a naturally occurring alkaloid used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. We have attempted to synthesise galanthamine by two routes. The first strategy was based on the cyclopropanation of a diazoacetamide of type followed by rearrangement to construct the tetracyclic core. The second strategy was based on the intramolecular nucleophilic addition/migration of azide. Neither route was successful and reasons for this are discussed. The key step in a recent series of synthesis of endo, exo-formation lignans is a highly diastereoselective C-H insertion. A study was undertaken with the aim of advancing our understanding of the process. This involved the synthesis of five analogues of the diazolactone C-H insertion precursors followed by diazo decomposition under various conditions. This investigation has increased our knowledge of the reaction.

38. Reconciling science and society : a critical historicist approach

Abstract

This thesis criticises a pervasive dualism in the philosophy of social sciences, the division between natural science and society. It argues that analysis which relies on this division misrepresents both natural scientific investigation and other social activities. From a dualistic perspective, those activities that allow a successful interaction with the material world, typically associated with natural science, are held to have a non-social aspect. Their theories (or 'meanings') are said to have a ground outside of the historical development and change which is characteristic of other social practices. It is this ground which is held to explain the progressive character of science. Conversely, those activities that are seen as fully social in character are theorised as if they were not variably successful in the achievement of their goals. As an alternative to this division, a 'critical historicist' approach is developed, drawing on post-positivist philosophy of science. It is argued that all social activities, including scientific investigation, are constituted by meanings, develop historically (rather than having a non-historical foundation), and are variably successful in character. This conception of social activity is then used to criticise existing philosophies of social science for their dualistic approach. Both anti-naturalistic approaches, represented by structuration theory, and naturalistic approaches, represented by realism, are considered. Structuration theory argues that natural science and other social practices are distinct because the latter involve issues of meaning not encountered in the former. This claim is challenged, and it is argued that issues of meaning are the same in natural science and other social activities. Although realism's analysis of social life is inspired by natural scientific investigation, it also distinguishes the properties of the two, suggesting that social activity involves both an 'objective' (scientific) aspect and a 'social' aspect. The thesis argues that this separation leads to analytical incoherence, and an indefensible conception of both 'science' and 'society'. It is suggested that the adoption of a critical historicist approach would remove this incoherence.
