Microwave cavities oscillating in the TM110 mode can be used as dynamic electron-optical elements inside an electron microscope. By filling the cavity with a dielectric material, it becomes more compact and power efficient, facilitating the implementation in an electron microscope. However, the incorporation of the dielectric material makes the manufacturing process more difficult. Presented here are the steps taken to characterize the dielectric material and to reproducibly fabricate dielectric filled cavities. Also presented are two versions with improved capabilities. The first, called a dual-mode cavity, is designed to support two modes simultaneously. The second has been optimized for low power consumption. With this optimized cavity, a magnetic field strength of 2.84 ± 0.07 mT was generated at an input power of 14.2 ± 0.2 W. Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is sometimes suggested as a hypothesis identification approach. It is often used as such in problem solving and consists of the analysis of observational data, often collected without well-defined hypotheses, with the purpose of finding clues that could inspire ideas and hypotheses. This article seeks to uncover some of the main principles of EDA in problem solving. The article discusses and explains EDA's main steps: (1) Display the data; (2) identify salient features; (3) interpret salient features. The empiricist notion of EDA, which pervades many textbook accounts of EDA, is criticized and contrasted to an account that emphasizes the role of mental models in hypothesis generation. The framework has some implications for the limitations of EDA. It also sheds light on the role of the statistician compared to the role of the context expert. The article argues that in teaching EDA the emphasis for statistical data analysis should be balanced with teaching students to theorize and be inquisitive. The area of pulsed-power technology covers a broad range of powers (up to 1014 W), voltages (up to 106-107 V), currents (as high as 106 A or higher) and pulse durations (below 10-8 s). State of the art systems have voltages up to a few hundred kilovolts at pulse lengths down to the nanosecond range. Special applications require extreme field strengths in the range of 1 GV/m. The design of a compact source, meeting the above requirement aims for 1 MV, 1 ns pulses. In this paper, we present a novel compact TLT (Transmission Line Transformer). The TLT consists of 10 coaxial transmission lines which are connected in parallel at the input and in series at the output. To verify the theoretical analysis a model of the transmission line transformer has been simulated by a time domain electromagnetic field solver. An optimized transmission line transformer has been built and first measurements have been performed. The equivalent circuit model and the simulations agree with the experimental results. The effect of secondary mode suppression by means of ferrite has been investigated. Both simulations and experiments showed that ferromagnetic cores around each individual transmissions line in our design can be omitted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
