Abstract

The stability of lamb meat burgers stored frozen for 8 months was studied using proximate composition, moisture loss, total acidity, pH value, TBA value, TVN value, WHC, Expressible water, total bacterial count, and sensory evaluation. The natural antioxidant (0.1% grape seeds extract) and packaging treatment (without and with vacuum) were both added. The data showed that as storage time increased, all samples' total acidity and TBA values increased while their moisture content and pH values decreased. In comparison to the treated samples, the change was greater in the control samples. The data demonstrated that, when compared to control samples or samples packaged without vacuum, samples treated with 0.1% grape seed extract (as natural antioxidant) and packaged under vacuum had the lowest values of TBA, total bacterial count. Abstract

Proximate composition, moisture loss, pH value, TBA value, water holding capacity (WHC), Expressible water (EW), total bacterial count, psychrophilic bacterial count, and sensory evaluation were done in order to study the effect of adding ginger extract (as natural antioxidant), and packaging under vacuum on the stability of fish fingers made from carp fish and stored frozen for 10 months. The data indicated reduction in the moisture content, and (WHC) value, while increase in the (EW), pH, and cooking loss values for the control samples compared to the treated ones. The data showed that the treated samples by ginger extract had the lowest values of TBA, total bacterial count, psychrophilic bacterial count compared with the control ones. Abstract

Abstract

Fish is considered as one of the cheapest sources of animal protein all over the globe. It provides protein, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids for human diets. It represents one of the national income sources in Egypt. The Egyptian Fisheries Authority declared in 2020 that, the production of fish reached 1 million 920 thousand tons. Since African catfish is one of the fish species consumed in Egypt. This study was done to use the fresh (Nile Karmout) catfish (Claries gariepinus) to produce catfish burger, and study the effect of adding 1% of Moringa leaves powder to the formula on the chemical composition, microbiological stability, and sensory evaluation of the product. The data showed that the addition of 1% moringa leaves powder to the catfish burger caused reduction in the water holding capacity, and increased the cooking loss while reduced the number of the examined bacterial count and improved the sensory evaluation compared to the control samples. Abstract

Moisture sorption isotherms of solar dried whole egg, egg white and egg yolk stored in different packaging materials at 25°C and relative humidity (RH) range from 22.50 to 92.50%were investigated. The water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) of the packaging materials was also determined at the same storage conditions. The data showed an increase in the (WVTR) values along with increasing the RH levels. The values were slightly high for the LDPE, whereas, there was no marked difference in the WVTR values for both HDPE and laminated polyethylene / nylon bags. The equilibrium moisture content (EMC) values for all samples were slightly high in the egg white, followed by whole egg and egg yolk. The (EMC) values for the samples increased with increasing the storage relative humidity. However, an inverse relationship was observed between the storage relative humidity and the time required to reach equilibration for all samples. The isotherm curves had sigmoidal shapes typical for food and all curves followed similar patterns. The data also showed that the appropriate RH for storage of solar dried egg samples under the previous storage conditions should be below 33% using suitable packaging materials with low water vapour transmission rate such as HDPE or laminated polyethylene / nylon bags. Abstract

Drying kinetics, functional properties and quality attributes of (whole egg, egg white and egg yolk) were investigatedby using a mixed-mode forced convection solar dryer .The results showed that, the moisture content decreased continuously with drying time. The drying rates were higher at the beginning, then decreased later with decreasing moisture content and increasing drying time. The drying time required to reduce the moisture contents from the initial moisture contents of 73.48, 88.21 and 50.37% to final moisture contents of 2.74, 2.13 and 2.07% was 4, 3 and 5 hours for the whole egg, egg white and egg yolk, respectively. The results also showed a slight decrease in protein, fat and ash contents. On the other hand, there was no remarkable changes observed in the pH values for the dried samples compared with the fresh ones. The quality attributes of solar dried eggs were as good as that of the fresh ones. Solar drying revealed optimum color values and good functional properties. In the light of the obtained results, it could be concluded that solar drying had no remarkable changes on either nutritious qualities or functional properties for the final products. Therefore, it can be used to produce whole egg, egg white and egg yolk in powder forms without adversely affecting their quality attributes, nutritional and functional properties. Abstract

A case of Goldenhar's syndrome (oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia) with the rare association of aplasia of one lung is presented with a discussion of the clinical findings and the aetiology. The major abnormalities, pulmonary, renal and the undergrowth of the jaw were all right-sided, confirming previous reports. This child developed a calcifying epithelioma and this is cited as support for the theory of the origin of these lesions from epidermoid cysts. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

26. Sexual Function in Hypospadiacs.

Abstract

The sexual function of 82 patients treated for hypospadias was assessed. It was concluded that the sexual function in these patients was unsatisfactory only following incomplete or incorrect surgery. The aim of surgery should be to achieve a straight penis with an adequate urethral lumen and a urethral orifice situated at the tip of the glans. Proper assessment of chordee and meticulous care in surgical technique are the prerequisites for success. They are the only preventive measures of the physical, psychic, sexual and social handicaps to which hypospadiacs are subjected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. The etching of diamonds by low pressure oxygen

Abstract

Diamonds have been etched by heating on a molybdenum filament in a low pressure (about 2.5μ Hg) of oxygen. The etch figures obtained by this method have the same orientation as those obtained by etching in oxidizing melts, but differ in outline by being sharply triangular. They are in fact similar in all respects, except for the inverted orientation, to the natural features called 'trigons'. It is therefore concluded, contrary to recently accepted opinion, that the latter are also probably etch figures, produced by an unknown natural etching process.Note : Unless the edge of the crystal is in the field of view, all upright triangles are etch pits.

31. Juxta-Renal Varicocelectomy for Recurrent Varicocele Following Retroperitoneal Operation

Abstract

Two patients with recurrent painful left varicocele following retroperitoneal varicocelectomy were subjected to juxta-renal varicocelectomy by a transverse supraumbilical incision. Ligature of the testicular vein was carried out just below the renal vein. Minute periarterial veins were disrupted by desheathing the testicular artery. Both patients were cured of their varicocele as judged by scrotal ultrasonography and by color duplex ultrasonography. Average follow-up period was 5 months.

Abstract

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? Could skeletal muscle be involved in microgravity-induced iron misdistribution by modulating expression of hepcidin, the master regulator of iron metabolism? What is the main finding and its importance? We demonstrate, in rats, that hepcidin upregulation is not a transient adaptation associated with early exposure to microgravity and that intermittent reloading does not limit microgravity-induced iron misdistribution despite having a beneficial effect on soleus muscle wasting., Abstract: In humans, exposure to microgravity during spaceflight causes muscle atrophy, changes in iron storage and a reduction in iron availability. We previously observed that during 7 days of simulated microgravity in rats, hepcidin plays a key role in iron misdistribution, and we suggested that a crosstalk between skeletal muscle and liver could regulate hepcidin synthesis in this context. In the present study in rats, we investigated the medium-term effects of simulated microgravity on iron metabolism. We also tested whether intermittent reloading (IR) to target skeletal muscle atrophy limits iron misdistribution efficiently. For this purpose, Wistar rats underwent 14 days of hindlimb unloading (HU) combined or not combined with daily IR. At the end of this period, the serum iron concentration and transferrin saturation were significantly reduced, whereas hepatic hepcidin mRNA was upregulated. However, the main signalling pathways involved in hepcidin synthesis in the liver (BMP-small mothers against decapentaplegic (SMAD), interleukin-6-STAT3 and ERK1/2) were unaffected. Unlike what was observed after 7 days of HU, the iron concentration in the spleen, liver and skeletal muscle was comparable between control animals and those that underwent HU or HU plus IR for 14 days. Despite its beneficial effect on soleus muscle atrophy and slow-to-fast myosin heavy chain distribution, IR did not significantly prevent a reduction in iron availability and hepcidin upregulation. Altogether, these results highlight that iron availability is durably reduced during longer exposure to simulated microgravity and that the related hepcidin upregulation is not a transient adaptation to these conditions. Abstract

Hereditary aceruloplasminemia (HA), related to mutations in the ceruloplasmin ( Cp ) gene, leads to iron accumulation. Ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity being considered essential for macrophage iron release, macrophage iron overload is expected, but it is not found in hepatic and splenic macrophages in humans. Our objective was to get a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to iron excess in HA. A clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/ CRISPR associated protein 9 (Cas9) knockout of the Cp gene was performed on Sprague-Dawley rats. We evaluated the iron status in plasma, the expression of iron metabolism genes, and the status of other metals whose interactions with iron are increasingly recognized. In Cp -/- rats, plasma ceruloplasmin and ferroxidase activity were absent, together with decreased iron concentration and transferrin saturation. Similarly as in humans, the hepatocytes were iron overloaded conversely to hepatic and splenic macrophages. Despite a relative hepcidin deficiency in Cp -/- rats and the loss of ferroxidase activity, potentially expected to limit the interaction of iron with transferrin, no increase of plasma non-transferrin-bound iron level was found. Copper was decreased in the spleen, whereas manganese was increased in the plasma. 34. Iron as a Therapeutic Target in HFE -Related Hemochromatosis: Usual and Novel Aspects.

Abstract

Genetic hemochromatosis is an iron overload disease that is mainly related to the C282Y mutation in the HFE gene. This gene controls the expression of hepcidin, a peptide secreted in plasma by the liver and regulates systemic iron distribution. Homozygous C282Y mutation induces hepcidin deficiency, leading to increased circulating transferrin saturation, and ultimately, iron accumulation in organs such as the liver, pancreas, heart, and bone. Iron in excess may induce or favor the development of complications such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, diabetes, heart failure, hypogonadism, but also complaints such as asthenia and disabling arthritis. Iron depletive treatment mainly consists of venesections that permit the removal of iron contained in red blood cells and the subsequent mobilization of stored iron in order to synthesize hemoglobin for new erythrocytes. It is highly efficient in removing excess iron and preventing most of the complications associated with excess iron in the body. However, this treatment does not target the biological mechanisms involved in the iron metabolism disturbance. New treatments based on the increase of hepcidin levels, by using hepcidin mimetics or inducers, or inhibitors of the iron export activity of ferroportin protein that is the target of hepcidin, if devoid of significant secondary effects, should be useful to better control iron parameters and symptoms, such as arthritis.

Abstract

IL-6 is an axial cytokine overexpressed in cancer to promote growth and increase resistance to anti-cancer therapies. As the application of IL-6-targeting therapies are still limited, alternative non-aggressive and adjuvant approaches, like physical activity (PA) could be useful to reverse IL-6 effects. To get more insights into liposarcoma (LS) pathophysiology, we investigated potential molecular links between IL-6 and LS growth and we tested the impact of PA on such mechanism in an orthotopic model of intramuscular LS. Initially active nude mice have received an intramuscular injection of either human SW872 cells or vehicle, then were respectively randomized into voluntary-active or inactive mice with open or restricted access to activity-wheels. We found that LS-bearing mice exhibited ∼6 fold increase in circulating IL-6 comparing to controls, with a concomitant decrease in hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes expression. Circulating IL-6 levels were positively correlated with intra-tumor IL-6 expression (r = 0.85, P < 0.01). Interestingly, intra-tumor IL-6, C/EBP-α/β and PPAR-γ expression were correlated together and with greater tumor mass and autophagy markers, notably, GABARAPL-1. Intriguingly, we found that maintaining a spontaneous PA after tumor injection did not reduce the levels of IL-6, but even enhanced tumor growth, induced body weight loss and increased the risk of developing lung metastasis. Our findings suggest that (1) IL-6, C/EBP-β and PPAR-γ exert a potential role in promoting growth of dedifferentiated LS and (2) that PA failed to mechanistically interfere with these factors, but enhanced LS growth via other independent-mechanisms. The preclinical data reported here could be helpful in the sub-molecular classification of LS patients to improve diagnosis and design a low-risk treatment. Abstract

Scabies is one of the most important prevalent contagious disease caused by itch mite "Sarcoptes scabiei." Many effective scabiecides have been suggested and tried. They differ in their side effects since they are applied on diseased skin sometimes all over the body. In this paper, sixteen parasitologically proved human scabies were successfully treated by 5% sulfur precipitate and 2.5% permethrin. Application of sulfur for one week or 2 applications of permethrin followed by a third one a week later proved to be safe and effective. The one week course of sulfur and the third application of permethrin acts against any emerging immature stages of the mite.

Abstract

In the last decade, human scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei and other non human strains is one of the most common contagious parasitic disease. Over a period of one year (June 1991--May 1992), a total of 200 scabietic patients were diagnosed in the outpatients' clinic of Dermatology and Venereology, Benha University Hospitals. They were 120 females and 80 males (sex ratio = 1.5:1). Their ages ranged between three months up to 70 years old. Most of the patients were parasitologically positive (160 or 80%). The most common signs and symptoms were itching, skin burrows, scratch markings, papules and pustules. Regional lymphadenitis was sometimes present as well as fever in patients with secondary bacterial infection. The most affected sites were the abdomen (100%), followed by the buttocks (81.3%), the thigh (50%), legs (50%) and the arms and web spaces (62.5%). The male external genitalia was infested in 60% and the female breast was infested in 72.7%. The sex and site distribution of the infestations were attributed to the risk factor of exposure to infestation. The patients were successfully treated with 5% sulfur precipitate and 2-5% permethrin. The whole results were discussed on the light of the previous work.

Abstract

Immunity entails all the forces concerned with recognition, specific reaction and removal of foreign bodies after they again access into the body of the host. The immune system interacts with genetics and infectious agents as well as with metabolic, endocrine and environmental factors. The serum immunoglobulins (G.M.A. & E.) and complement (C3 and C4) were estimated in sixteen parasitologically proven patients with scabies. The causative agent was Sarcoptes scabiei. The results showed a high significant increase in the mean average of IgG., IgM. and in particular IgE pretreatment than in patients three months after treatment and in patients after treatment than in controls. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease in the mean average in the mean average of IgA after treatment was insignificant compared with controls. The C3 and C4 showed no significant changes in the mean average in the patients before or after treatment compared with controls. The changes in the IgG., IgM. and in particular IgE. may be specific reaction to the parasite or a non specific one to the dead parasite or its faeces or even to a secondary infection developed. On the other hand, the decrease in the IgA. may be due to the mite or its products which interfere with its synthesis. It is concluded that scabies is associated with a humoral immunological response against the mite infestation.

Abstract

This paper reports two indigenous cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis for the first time in Kafr Shokr, Qualyobia Governorate. One of the two cases was misdiagnosed as cutaneous tuberculosis (primary complex) and was kept on TB treatment, but with no clinical improvement. The two patients were successfully treated with sodium stibogluconate (pentostam).

Abstract

A classification of duplications of the male urethra has been presented together with our clinical experience. The commonest variety is epispadiac form which may be complete, incomplete or abortive. Less common are the hypospadiac forms and very much rarer are the spindle urethras where the bladder neck and also the distal urethra are single. The bifid urethra with pre-anal accessory track is relatively common but has often gone unrecognised.

Abstract

The accuracy and reliability of ultrasound were assessed in 246 patients with 338 radiologically nonfunctioning renal units. The causes of nonfunction included hydronephrosis, pyonephrosis, renal parenchymal disease, renal agenesis, renal neoplasm and polycystic disease. Obstruction was proved in 158 patients, with an accuracy of 98.1 per cent. Retrograde pyelography was avoided. The diagnosis of a small end stage kidney was correct in 42 patients. In 9 patients with a unilateral nonfunctioning kidney less than 9 cm. long a thin coarsely textured cortex with dilatation of 1 or more calices was found. To our knowledge the presence of dilated calices in a small kidney, suggestive of chronic pyelonephritic changes, has not been described previously by ultrasound. Nonvisualization occurred in 16 cases (4.7 per cent) despite the anatomical presence of a kidney. An advanced degree of pyonephrosis with thick inspissated pus sometimes may mimic the ultrasonic appearance of a renal neoplasm.

Abstract

Twenty-four patients were admitted to Kasr-El-Aini Hospital with suspected diagnoses of amoebic liver abscesses. The patients underwent clinical examinations, stool specimen analyses for cysts and trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica, radiologic examinations, and routine liver function tests. In one patient, a liver scintiscan was obtained. Ultrasonographic examination was performed on all patients using the gray scale imaging technique. In 20 patients, the diagnoses of amoebic liver abscesses were demonstrated by ultrasonographic examination. In 19 patients, amoebic liver abscesses were verified by aspiration biopsies (95%), and one patient had a false-positive result. This false-positive result was due to a degenerated hepatoma, demonstrated by aspiration biopsy. Of the 19 patients, 12 patients (63.12%) had right lobe abscesses and seven (36.89%) had left lobe abscesses. The site, size and nature of the pus contained in the abscess could be determined by ultrasonographic examination and, therefore, helped in the management and technique of the aspiration biopsy. In addition, follow-up data could be more detailed using ultrasonographic examinations. Ultrasonographic examination is a noninvasive, safe, accurate, and rapid method of diagnosis, and is highly recommended as a routing procedure in all cases of suspected amoebic liver abscesses in the pre- and posttreatment stages of the disease. It is also recommended as an indicator of complete cure at follow-up examination.

Abstract

190 children with pelviureteric obstruction are reviewed. Their symptoms are analysed and the pre- and post-operative radiographic appearances are assessed. The results are very encouraging with a clinical improvement in the majority of patients, free ureteric drainage in almost all and an improvement in the calyceal pattern in 65.9%.
