Using a common methodology to analyze data from the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer/Ion Release Module (AMPTE/IRM) and International Sun-Earth Explorer 2 (ISEE 2) satellites we report on the statistical properties of bursty bulk flow events (BBFs) in the inner plasma sheet (IPS). A positive correlation between BBFs and the AE index suggests that BBFs are predominantly geomagnetically active time phenomena. Earthward BBFs are more frequent close to midnight and away from Earth, up to a distance of approximately 19 R(sub E). Tailward BBFs are very infrequent in the IRM data set and somewhat less infrequent in the ISEE 2 data set in the region of the satellites' spatial overlap, possibly due to the more active conditions prevailing during the ISEE 2 mission in that region. However, in both data sets the ratio of tailward to earthward BBFs increases with distance from Earth; more than 20% of all BBFs are anti-sunward tailward of X = -19 R(sub E) in the ISEE 2 data set. BBFs are responsible for 60-100% of the measured earthward transport of mass, energy and magnetic flux past the satellite in the regions of maximum occurrence rate, even though they last approximately 10-15% of the IPS observation time there. Thus BBFs represent the primary transport mechanism at those regions. The one-to-one correspondence between BBFs and substorm phase, as well as the relative contribution of BBFs to the total transport observed during substorms are questions that await further investigation based on multi instrument studies of individual events.

No high-speed flows or discernible counterstreaming ion beams were observed during a series of plasma sheet boundary encounters resulting from solar wind-driven plasma sheet motions. We conclude that the boundary may be active primarily during plasma sheet 'recovery'. A temporal onset of flows in the inner plasma sheet (IPS) was associated with the appearance of counterstreaming beams embedded in an already isotropic plasma sheet boundary and close to the neutral sheet may have a common generation mechanism.

We use AMPTE/IRM and ISEE 2 data to study the properties of the high beta plasma sheet, the inner plasma sheet (IPS). Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) are excised from the two databases, and the average flow pattern in the non-BBF (quiet) IPS is constructed. At local midnight this ensemble-average flow is predominantly duskward; closer to the flanks it is mostly earthward. The flow pattern agrees qualitatively with calculations based on the Tsyganenko (1987) model (T87), where the earthward flow is due to the ensemble-average cross tail electric field and the duskward flow is the diamagnetic drift due to an inward pressure gradient. The IPS is on the average in pressure equilibrium with the lobes. Because of its large variance the average flow does not represent the instantaneous flow field. Case studies also show that the non-BBF flow is highly irregular and inherently unsteady, a reason why earthward convection can avoid a pressure balance inconsistency with the lobes. The ensemble distribution of velocities is a fundamental observable of the quiet plasma sheet flow field.

The small-amplitude MHD Riemann problem is studied using the Cohen-Kulsrud-Burgers equations. Unlike the coplanar Riemann problem, the evolution of noncoplanar Riemann problems is not self-similar and its flow structures could change in time. But its large-time behavior is very simple and a time-dependent 2 - 3 intermediate shock is always involved for the noncoplanar field rotations. The time-dependent 2 - 3 intermediate shock has a well-defined structure and exists for any degree of field rotation.

We discuss the possible observational signatures resulting from the interaction of a nuclear wind with an elliptical host galaxy. The ionization parameter in emission-line gas, deduced from spatially resolved spectral observations, will be a strong indicator of the nuclear wind as well as the possible pickup of stellar mass loss by the wind. If the wind is sufficiently luminous, galactic X-ray profiles will exhibit an extended flattening. Detailed study of individual objects will be necessary for conclusive evidence of nuclear winds. We find that nuclear winds are unlikely to cause the disruption of the radio jets in wide-angle tail radio galaxies. Previously proposed mechanisms whereby nuclear winds cause the formation of narrow absorption line systems or stellar shells are not likely to occur if the interstellar medium of the host elliptical galaxy is hot.

The interaction of a supersonic wind generated by an active nucleus, a nuclear wind, with the hot interstellar medium of an elliptical host galaxy is investigated. We survey the basic time and spatial scales of this interaction through a study covering the range of probable wind and galaxy parameters. The evolving wind/ISM interaction is detailed, with the conclusion that a true equilibrium state is never possible due to long cooling times. Alteration of the wind by mass loading is considered, and a relationship between nuclear winds and central stellar clusters in this context is outlined. The nuclear wind will fundamentally alter the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. Powerful radio galaxies and quasars can evacuate the entire ISM of their host galaxy. In an isolated elliptical galaxy, winds from moderately powerful radio galaxies will either be confined to within about a kpc or evacuate the entire hot ISM. Even in the relatively high pressure ISM of elliptical galaxies winds containing only 1 percent-10 percent of the radiant luminosity of the active nucleus will extend to the narrow-line region. Therefore, nuclear winds are likely to control the properties of the narrow-line emission.

An overview of the Galileo magnetometer observations from the crossing of the tail magnetopause at an antisolar distance of close to 100 R(E) through exit into the solar wind on the dayside is presented. These measurements are linked with correlative data from ground stations and from IMP 8 which was ideally located to serve as a monitor of the solar wind upstream of the bow shock. A time line of the important geomagnetic events of the day that provides a framework for the full multiinstrument analysis of the flyby data is presented. The observations are used to investigate apsects of the relationship between magnetotail dynamics and the separate intensifications of a multiple onset substorm inferred from ground-based data. It is proposed that the signatures associated with individual substorm intensifications are localized in the dawn-to-dusk extent even at remote locations in the magnetotail, just as they are in the ionosphere, and that the tail disturbances associated with successive substorm intensifications step across the tail towards the dusk flank.

The inverse scattering transform (IST) based on the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation is applied to a complex time series of nonlinear Alfven wave data generated by numerical simulation. The IST describes the long-time evolution of quasi-parallel Alfven waves more efficiently than the Fourier transform, which is adapted to linear rather than nonlinear problems. When dissipation is added, so the conditions for the validity of the DNLS are not strictly satisfied, the IST continues to provide a compact description of the wavefield in terms of a small number of decaying envelope solitons.

Phenomena detected by the plasma wave instrument during the Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune are reviewed. Particular attention given to radio emissions, electron plasma oscillations in the solar wind upstream of the bow shock, electrostatic electron cyclotron waves and upper hybrid resonance (UHR) waves, whistler mode noise, and dust impacts. The radio emissions which occur in a broad range of about 5 to 50 kHz are considered to be generated by mode conversion from UHR waves at the magnetic equator. The inner magnetosphere has relatively low plasma wave intensities (less than 100 microV/m). Many small micron-sized dust particles which were detected striking the spacecraft had the maximum impact rate of about 280 impacts per sec at the bound ring plane crossing, and about 110 impacts per sec at the outbound ring plane crossing. Most of the particles were concentrated in a dense disk, about one thousand km thick, near the equatorial plane.

A quantitative description of time-dependent (MHD) intermediate shocks is formulated. In non-coplanar Riemann problems, time-dependent 2 yields 3 intermediate shocks evolve in time as a localized self-similar structure whose strength decreases as 1/sq rt t, and whose width expands as sq rt t. We derive structural relations, similar to Rankine-Hugoniot relations, between the plasma properties and the magnitude of the transverse magnetic field, which we hope can help identify time-dependent 2 yields 3 intermediate shocks at the magnetopause, in the solar wind, and elsewhere in space. The analytic forms of the structural relations agree with our numerical results.

The formation of quasi-parallel Alfven solitons is investigated through the inverse scattering transformation (IST) for the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation. The DNLS has a rich complement of soliton solutions consisting of a two-parameter soliton family and a one-parameter bright/dark soliton family. In this paper, the physical roles and origins of these soliton families are inferred through an analytic study of the scattering data generated by the IST for a set of initial profiles. The DNLS equation has as limiting forms the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), Korteweg-de-Vries (KdV) and modified Korteweg-de-Vries (MKdV) equations. Each of these limits is briefly reviewed in the physical context of quasi-parallel Alfven waves. The existence of these limiting forms serves as a natural framework for discussing the formation of Alfven solitons.

The inverse scattering transformation (IST) is used to study the one-parameter and two-parameter soliton families of the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation. The two-parameter soliton family is determined by the discrete complex eigenvalue spectrum of the Kaup-Newell scattering problem and the one-parameter soliton family corresponds to the discrete real eigenvalue spectrum. The structure of the IST is exploited to discuss the existence of discrete real eigenvalues and to prove their structural stability to perturbations of the initial conditions. Also, though the two-parameter soliton is structurally stable in general, it is shown that a perturbation of the initial conditions may change the two-parameter soliton into a degenerate soliton which, in turn, is structurally unstable. This degenerate, or double pole, soliton may bifurcate due to a perturbation of the initial conditions into a pair of one-parameter solitons. If the initial profile is on compact support, then this pair of one-parameter solitons must be compressive and rarefactive respectively. Finally, the Gelfand-Levitan equations appropriate for the double pole soliton are solved.

The beta dependence (where beta is the ratio between plasma pressure to magnetic pressure) of the collisionless tearing instability at the dayside magnetopause current sheet was investigated analytically for several current sheet models. The results show that, when the asymmetry of the dayside magnetopause current sheet is taken into account, the beta dependence of the collisionless tearing instability at the dayside magnetopause is controlled by the magnetic field profile across the magnetopause current sheet.

The purpose of the Galileo plasma wave investigation is to study plasma waves and radio emissions in the magnetosphere of Jupiter. The plasma wave instrument uses an electric dipole antenna to detect electric fields, and two search coil magnetic antennas to detect magnetic fields. The frequency range covered is 5 Hz to 5.6 MHz for electric fields and 5 Hz to 160 kHz for magnetic fields. Low time-resolution survey spectrums are provided by three on-board spectrum analyzers. In the normal mode of operation the frequency resolution is about 10 percent, and the time resolution for a complete set of electric and magnetic field measurements is 37.33 s. High time-resolution spectrums are provided by a wideband receiver. The wideband receiver provides waveform measurements over bandwidths of 1, 10, and 80 kHz. Compared to previous measurements at Jupiter this instrument has several new capabilities. These new capabilities include (1) both electric and magnetic field measurements to distinguish electrostatic and electromagnetic waves, (2) direction finding measurements to determine source locations, and (3) increased bandwidth for the wideband measurements.

High-speed flows in the inner central plasma sheet (first reported by Baumjohann et al. (1990) are studied, together with the concurrent behavior of the plasma and magnetic field, by using AMPTE/IRM data from about 9 to 19 R(E) in the earth magnetotail. The conclusions drawn from the detailed analysis of a representative event are reinforced by a superposed epoch analysis applied on two years of data. The high-speed flows organize themselves in 10-min time scale flow enhancements called here bursty-bulk flow (BBF) events. Both temporal and spatial effects are responsible for their bursty nature. The flow velocity exhibits peaks of very large amplitude with a characteristic time scale of the order of a minute, which are usually associated with magnetic field dipolarizations and ion temeperature increases. The BBFs represent intervals of enhanced earthward convection and energy transport per unit area in the y-z GSM direction of the order of 5 x 10 exp 19 ergs/R(E-squared).

The present study examines the structure of discontinuity layers associated with magnetic reconnection by numerically solving the Riemann problem for the evolution of an initial current sheet which separates two plasma regions with antiparallel magnetic field components in the z direction and a common guide magnetic field in the y direction. In the presence of a nonzero normal component of the magnetic field, the initial current sheet evolves into a system of MHD discontinuities. For the initial current sheet with a zero guide field, steady intermediate shocks, slow shocks, slow expansion waves, or contact discontinuity are observed to develop. For the current sheet with a nonzero guide field, time-dependent intermediate shocks, instead of steady intermediate shocks, are observed to bound the reconnection layer.

A quantitative description of time-dependent intermediate shocks is formulated using the Cohen-Kulsrud-Burgers equations. In noncoplanar Riemann problems, time-dependent two-three transition intermediate shocks evolve in time as a localized self-similar structure whose strength decreases as 1/the square root of t, and whose width expands as the square root of t. Time-dependent intermediate shocks offer a way of solving the noncoplanar MHD Riemann problem.

The Cohen-Kulsrud-Burgers equation (CKB) is used to consider the nonlinear evolution of resistive, quasi-parallel Alfven waves subject to a long-wavelength, plane-polarized, monochromatic instability. The instability saturates by nonlinear steepening, which proceeds until the periodic waveform develops an interior scale length comparable to the dissipation length; a fast or an intermediate shock then forms. The result is a periodic train of Alfven shocks of one or the other type. For propagation strictly parallel to the magnetic field, there will be two shocks per instability wavelength. Numerical integration of the time-dependent CKB equation shows that an initial, small-amplitude growing wave asymptotes to a stable, periodic stationary wave whose analytic solution specifies how the type of shock embedded in the shock train, and the amplitude and speed of the shock train, depend on the strength and phase of the instability. Waveforms observed upstream of the earth's bowshock and cometary shocks resemble those calculated here.

The chaos in a one-dimensional system, which would be nonlinear stationary Alfven waves in the absence of an external driver, is characterized. The evolution equations are numerically integrated for the transverse wave magnetic field amplitude and phase using the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation (DNLS), including resistive wave damping and a long-wavelength monochromatic, circularly polarized driver. A Poincare map analysis shows that, for the nondissipative (Hamiltonian) case, the solutions near the phase space (soliton) separatrices of this system become chaotic as the driver amplitude increases, and 'strong' chaos appears when the driver amplitude is large. The dissipative system exhibits a wealth of dynamical behavior, including quasiperiodic orbits, period-doubling bifurcations leading to chaos, sudden transitions to chaos, and several types of strange attractors.

Plasma wave measurements from the Voyager 2 crossing of Neptune's bow shock are presented and compared with measurements from the bow shocks of Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. The wave amplitudes above 0.01fp, when normalized to the solar wind ion thermal energy density at each planet, are significantly higher at the outer planets than at Earth. Despite the differences in amplitude, the shock spectra of all the planets can be fitted to curves of similar form in this frequency range. The total normalized electric field energy densities exhibit an exponential dependence on ion thermal Mach number, Magnetosheath wave energies are comparable at all of the planets when normalized to the downstream plasma pressure.

Plasma sheet ions do not conserve their first adiabatic invariant when the magnetic field is appreciably tail-like. They do conserve a different adiabatic invariant but only to linear, rather than exponential, accuracy in the appropriate small parameter. Thus significant stochastic diffusion can occur for particles crossing the separatrix dividing the segments of orbits on which the particles cross and do not cross the tail midplane. Such ions can escape the plasma sheet and precipitate into the atmosphere. Stochastic scattering is strongest from those field lines where the ion's Larmor period in the normal component of the neutral sheet magnetic field approximately equals its bounce period. By comparing the rates of stochastic ion loss and convection in the tail, it is possible to estimate the location and thickness of the inner edge of the ion plasma sheet created by stochastic ion loss. Ions of different masses precipitate into the atmosphere at slightly different locations. Since wave particle interactions are not needed, this precipitation will always occur and should be particularly evident during quiet geomagnetic conditions, when it is less likely to be masked by other precipitation mechanisms.

A simplified set of equations is derived that approximates the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Navier-Stokes equations for weakly nonlinear disturbances whose speeds are close to the MHD intermediate speed. Its shock structure solutions are then examined. The fast and slow shock solutions are uniquely specified by their Rankine-Hugoniot relations. However, the intermediate shock solutions, which are not unique, are characterized by the integral through the shock of the noncoplanar component of the magnetic field. For situations in which this integral is conserved, the Riemann problem is well defined and predicts the evolution of intermediate shocks. This analysis is substantiated by numerical computations.
