The thesis analyses what it means to learn algebra, what features of computer modelling might be able to help with the learning of algebra, and how teachers might come to incorporate computer modelling into their teaching of algebra. A series of teaching experiments is used to explore the effects on the learning algebra of computer modelling work by pupils in the classroom. A mixed qualitative and quantitative design based on a framework of affordances, constraints and abilities is used to design and analyse a structured series of teaching programmes and resources. The thesis concludes that computer modelling has a role to play in stimulating and giving meaning to learners' acts of symbolisation. The development of formal algebraic abilities requires additional reflective processes, however, and the use of ICT can provide appropriate experiences from which, with the teachers' support, pupils may formalise their symbolisation of arithmetic relationships. Success in this development is sensitive to the computer modelling tools used, as well as the didactical structure and pedagogical approach adopted.
