We describe how a novel online changepoint detection algorithm, called Poisson-FOCuS, can be used to optimally detect gamma-ray bursts within the computational constraints imposed by miniaturized satellites such as the upcoming HERMES-Pathfinder constellation. Poisson-FOCuS enables testing for gamma-ray burst onset at all intervals in a count time series, across all timescales and offsets, in real-time and at a fraction of the computational cost of conventional strategies. We validate an implementation with automatic background assessment through exponential smoothing, using archival data from Fermi-GBM. Through simulations of lightcurves modeled after real short and long gamma-ray bursts, we demonstrate that the same implementation has higher detection power than algorithms designed to emulate the logic of Fermi-GBM and Compton-BATSE, reaching the performances of a brute-force benchmark with oracle information on the true background rate, when not hindered by automatic background assessment. Finally, using simulated data with different lengths and means, we show that Poisson-FOCuS can analyze data twice as fast as a similarly implemented benchmark emulator for the historic Fermi-GBM on-board trigger algorithms.

Online changepoint detection algorithms that are based on likelihood-ratio tests have been shown to have excellent statistical properties. However, a simple online implementation is computationally infeasible as, at time $T$, it involves considering $O(T)$ possible locations for the change. Recently, the FOCuS algorithm has been introduced for detecting changes in mean in Gaussian data that decreases the per-iteration cost to $O(\log T)$. This is possible by using pruning ideas, which reduce the set of changepoint locations that need to be considered at time $T$ to approximately $\log T$. We show that if one wishes to perform the likelihood ratio test for a different one-parameter exponential family model, then exactly the same pruning rule can be used, and again one need only consider approximately $\log T$ locations at iteration $T$. Furthermore, we show how we can adaptively perform the maximisation step of the algorithm so that we need only maximise the test statistic over a small subset of these possible locations. Empirical results show that the resulting online algorithm, which can detect changes under a wide range of models, has a constant-per-iteration cost on average.

Gamma-ray bursts are flashes of light from distant exploding stars. Cube satellites that monitor photons across different energy bands are used to detect these bursts. There is a need for computationally efficient algorithms, able to run using the limited computational resource onboard a cube satellite, that can detect when gamma-ray bursts occur. Current algorithms are based on monitoring photon counts across a grid of different sizes of time window. We propose a new algorithm, which extends the recently developed FOCuS algorithm for online change detection to Poisson data. Our algorithm is mathematically equivalent to searching over all possible window sizes, but at half the computational cost of the current grid-based methods. We demonstrate the additional power of our approach using simulations and data drawn from the Fermi gamma-ray burst catalogue.

The utilization of management control systems in university management poses a considerable challenge because university's strategic goals are not identical to those applied in profit-oriented management. A university's management control system should take into account the processing of management information for management purposes, allowing for the relationships between different groups of stakeholders. The specificity of the university operation assumes conducting long-term scientific research and educational programmes. Therefore, the controlling approach to university management should considerat long-term performance measurement as well as management in key areas such as research, provision of education to students, and interaction with the tertiary institution's socioeconomic environment.This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework of the Intelligent Management Control System for Higher Education (IMCSHE) based on cognitive agents. The main findings are related to developing the assumption, model, and technological basis including the artificial intelligence method.

In the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, it is important to be able to functionalize surfaces chemically for a wide variety of applications. Scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs) are important instruments in this area used to measure the surface structure and chemistry with better than molecular resolution. Self-assembly is frequently used to create monolayers that redefine the surface chemistry in just a single-molecule-thick layer. Indeed, STM images reveal rich information about the structure of self-assembled monolayers since they convey chemical and physical properties of the studied material. In order to assist in and to enhance the analysis of STM and other images, we propose and demonstrate an image-processing framework that produces two image segmentations: one is based on intensities (apparent heights in STM images) and the other is based on textural patterns. The proposed framework begins with a cartoon+texture decomposition, which separates an image into its cartoon and texture components. Afterward, the cartoon image is segmented by a modified multiphase version of the local Chan-Vese model, while the texture image is segmented by a combination of 2D empirical wavelet transform and a clustering algorithm. Overall, our proposed framework contains several new features, specifically in presenting a new application of cartoon+texture decomposition and of the empirical wavelet transforms and in developing a specialized framework to segment STM images and other data. To demonstrate the potential of our approach, we apply it to actual STM images of cyanide monolayers on Au\{111\} and present their corresponding segmentation results.

We experimentally investigate the effect of a magnetic field on photon detection in superconducting single-photon detectors. At low fields, the effect of a magnetic field is through the direct modification of the quasiparticle density of states of the superconductor, and magnetic field and bias current are interchangable, as is expected for homogeneous dirty-limit superconductors. At the field where a first vortex enters the detector, the effect of the magnetic field is reduced, up until the point where the critical current of the detector starts to be determined by flux flow. From this field on, increasing the magnetic field does not alter the detection of photons anymore, whereas it does still change the rate of dark counts. This result points at an intrinsic difference in dark and light counts, and also shows that no enhancement of the intrinsic detection efficiency of a straight SSPD wire is achievable in a magnetic field.

Vortices confined to superconducting easy flow channels with periodic constrictions exhibit reversible oscillations in the critical current at which vortices begin moving as the external magnetic field is varied. This commensurability scales with the channel shape and arrangement, although screening effects play an important role. For large magnetic fields, some of the vortices become pinned outside of the channels, leading to magnetic hysteresis in the critical current. Some channel configurations also exhibit a dynamical hysteresis in the flux-flow regime near the matching fields.

We have developed a picovoltmeter using a Nb dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) for measuring the flux-flow voltage from a small number of vortices moving through a submicron weak-pinning superconducting channel. We have applied this picovoltmeter to measure the vortex response in a single channel arranged in a circle on a Corbino disk geometry. The dependence of the Josephson Plasma Resonance (JPR) frequency in heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta on temperature and controlled pointlike disorder, introduced by high-energy electron irradiation, is cross-correlated and compared to the behavior of the ab-plane penetration depth. It is found that the zero temperature plasma frequency, representative of the superfluid component of the c-axis spectral weight, decreases proportionally with T_c when the disorder is increased. The temperature dependence of the JPR frequency is the same for all disorder levels, including pristine crystals. The reduction of the c-axis superfluid density as function of disorder is accounted for by pair-breaking induced by impurity scattering in the CuO2 planes, rather than by quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase. The reduction of the c-axis superfluid density as function of temperature follows a T^{2}--law and is accounted for by quasi-particle hopping through impurity induced interlayer states., Comment: 10 pages, 9 Figures

The controlled motion of objects through narrow channels is important in many fields. We have fabricated asymmetric weak-pinning channels in a superconducting thin-film strip for controlling the dynamics of vortices. The lack of pinning allows the vortices to move through the channels with the dominant interaction determined by the shape of the channel walls. We present measurements of vortex dynamics in the channels and compare these with similar measurements on a set of uniform-width channels. While the uniform-width channels exhibit a symmetric response for both directions through the channel, the vortex motion through the asymmetric channels is quite different, with substantial asymmetries in both the static depinning and dynamic flux flow. Dynamic ordering of driven vortex matter has been investigated in the peak effect regime of both amorphous MoGe films and 2H-NbSe2 crystals by mode locking (ML) and dc transport measurements. ML features allow us to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices evolves with the average velocity. Determining the onset of ML resonance in different magnetic fields and/or temperatures, we find that the dynamic ordering frequency (velocity) exhibits a striking divergence in the higher part of the peak effect regime. Interestingly, this phenomenon is accompanied by a pronounced peak of dynamic critical current. Mapping out field-temperature phase diagrams, we find that divergent points follow well the thermodynamic melting curve of the ideal vortex lattice over wide field and/or temperature ranges. These findings provide a link between the dynamic and static melting phenomena which can be distinguished from the disorder induced peak effect., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Precision measurements of the vortex phase diagram in single crystals of the layered superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ in oblique magnetic fields confirm the existence of a second phase transition, in addition to the usual first order vortex lattice melting line $H_{m}(T)$. The transition has a strong first order character, is accompanied by strong hysteresis, and intersects the melting line in a tricritical point ($H_{m}^{\perp}$, $H^{\parallel}_{cr}$). Its field dependence and the changing character of the melting line at the tricritical point strongly suggest that the ground state for magnetic fields closely aligned with the superconducting layers is a lattice of uniformly tilted vortex lines.

In a sandwich consisting of two superconducting films, one weakly pinning and one strongly pinning, the vortex positions in both films are determined by the strongly pinning material and the vortex lattice is disordered in both films. We used (strongly pinning) NbN and (weakly pinning) MoGe and studied, by directly imaging the vortex core positions with a scanning tunnelling microscope, how this disorder is restored with increasing thickness of MoGe layer or when the interface is made insulating. For clean interfaces we find that the first reordering of the vortex lattice is found at a layer thickness wich is compatible with the first bending mode of the vortex lines. Making the interface insulating we find that order is restored quickly. We argue that this is can be understood from the competition between the Josephson force working on the vortex segments on the one hand, and the elastic restoring forces inside the weakly pinning layer on the other hand., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

By measuring the Josephson Plasma Resonance, we have probed the influence of an in-plane magnetic field on the pancake vortex correlations along the c-axis in heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Tc = 72.4 +/- 0.6 K) single crystals both in the vortex liquid and in the vortex solid phase. Whereas the in-plane field enhances the interlayer phase coherence in the liquid state close to the melting line, it slightly depresses it in the solid state. This is interpreted as the result of an attractive force between pancake vortices and Josephson vortices, apparently also present in the vortex liquid state. The results unveil a boundary between a correlated vortex liquid in which pancakes adapt to Josephson vortices, and the usual homogeneous liquid., Comment: 2 pages, submitted to the Proceedings of M2S HTSC VIII Dresden

The Josephson Plasma Resonance is used to study the c-axis supercurrent in the superconducting state of underdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ with varying degrees of controlled point-like disorder, introduced by high-energy electron irradiation. As disorder is increased, the Josephson Plasma frequency decreases proportionally to the critical temperature. The temperature dependence of the plasma frequency does not depend on the irradiation dose, and is in quantitative agreement with a model for quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase in the CuO$_{2}$ layers., Comment: 2 pages, submitted to the Proceedings of M2S-HTSC VIII Dresden

The effect of a magnetic field component parallel to the superconducting layers on longitudinal Josephson plasma oscillations in the layered high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ is shown to depend on the thermodynamic state of the underlying vortex lattice. Whereas the parallel magnetic field component depresses the Josephson Plasma Resonance (JPR) frequency in the vortex solid phase, it may enhance it in the vortex liquid. There is a close correlation between the behavior of microwave absorption near the JPR frequency and the effectiveness of pancake vortex pinning, with the enhancement of the plasma resonance frequency occurring in the absence of pinning, at high temperature close to the vortex melting line. We present the ab-plane optical conductivity of four single crystals of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) with different carrier doping levels from the strongly underdoped to the strongly overdoped range with $T_c$=66, 88, 77, and 67 K respectively. We focus on the redistribution of the low frequency optical spectral weight (SW) in the superconducting and normal states. The temperature dependence of the low-frequency spectral weight in the normal state is significantly stronger in the overdoped regime. In agreement with other studies, the superconducting order is marked by an increase of the low frequency SW for low doping, while the SW decreases for the highly overdoped sample. The effect crosses through zero at a doping concentration $\delta$=0.19 which is slightly to the right of the maximum of the superconducting dome. This sign change is not reproduced by the BCS model calculations, assuming the electron-momentum dispersion known from published ARPES data. Recent Cluster Dynamical Mean Field Theory (CDMFT) calculations based on the Hubbard and t-J models, agree in several relevant respects with the experimental data.

Precise measurements of the in-plane microwave surface impedance of high-quality single crystals of Bi2212 and Tl2201 are used to probe the relaxation time of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconducting state through a two-fluid analysis of the microwave conductivity. While this analysis requires us to posit a form for the frequency-dependent quasiparticle conductivity, we clearly demonstrate that the extraction of the relaxation rate is quite insensitive to the assumed shape of the quasiparticle spectrum. The robustness of the analysis is rooted in the oscillator-strength sum rule and the fact that we simultaneously measure the real and imaginary parts of the conductivity. In both Bi2212 and Tl2201 we infer a linear temperature dependence of the transport relaxation rate 1/tau and a small but finite zero-temperature intercept. The linear temperature dependence of 1/tau is in accord with expectations for weak elastic scattering in an unconventional superconductor with line nodes and a small residual density of states. The same analysis reveals an onset of inelastic scattering at higher temperatures similar to that seen in the YBCO superconductors. Finally we extrapolate the two-fluid model over a range of frequencies up to five times the measurement frequency, where the extrapolation predicts behaviour that is qualitatively similar to terahertz conductivity data on Bi2212 thin films. While relaxation rates in Bi2212 and Tl2201 are substantially higher than in YBCO there are qualitative similarities between all three materials, and the differences can likely be attributed to varying levels of static disorder. We therefore conclude that a universal picture of quasiparticle scattering in the cuprates is emerging., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We study the behavior of vortex matter in artificial flow channels confined by pinned vortices in the channel edges (CE's). The critical current $J_s$ is governed by the interaction with static vortices in the CE's. We study structural changes associated with (in)commensurability between the channel width $w$ and the natural row spacing $b_0$, and their effect on $J_s$. The behavior depends crucially on the presence of disorder in the CE arrays. For ordered CE's, maxima in $J_s$ occur at matching $w=nb_0$ ($n$ integer), while for $w\neq nb_0$ defects along the CE's cause a vanishing $J_s$. For weak CE disorder, the sharp peaks in $J_s$ at $w=nb_0$ become smeared via nucleation and pinning of defects. The corresponding quasi-1D $n$ row configurations can be described by a (disordered)sine-Gordon model. For larger disorder and $w\simeq nb_0$, $J_s$ levels at $\sim 30 %$ of the ideal lattice strength $J_s^0$. Around 'half filling' ($w/b_0 \simeq n\pm 1/2$), disorder causes new features, namely {\it misaligned} defects and coexistence of $n$ and $n \pm 1$ rows in the channel. This causes a {\it maximum} in $J_s$ around mismatch, while $J_s$ smoothly decreases towards matching due to annealing of the misaligned regions. We study the evolution of static and dynamic structures on changing $w/b_0$, the relation between modulations of $J_s$ and transverse fluctuations and dynamic ordering of the arrays. We report a new nonlocal effect in vortex matter, where an electric current confined to a small region of a long and sufficiently narrow superconducting wire causes vortex flow at distances hundreds of inter-vortex separations away. The observed remote traffic of vortices is attributed to a very efficient transfer of a local strain through the one-dimensional vortex lattice, even in the presence of disorder. We also observe mesoscopic fluctuations in the nonlocal vortex flow, which arise due to "traffic jams" when vortex arrangements do not match a local geometry of a superconducting channel., Comment: a slightly longer version of a tentatively accepted PRL

Using 30 MeV C60 fullerene irradiation, we have produced latent tracks of diameter 20 nm and length 200 nm, near the surface of single crystalline BSCCO. A preliminary transmission electron microscopy study shows evidence for a very high density of deposited energy, and the ejection of material from the track core in very thin specimens. The latent tracks reveal themselves to be exceptionally strong pinning centers for vortices in the superconducting mixed state. Both the critical current density and magnetic irreversibility line are significantly enhanced. The irradiated crystals present salient features of the (B,T) phase diagram of vortex matter both of pristine crystals, such as the first order vortex phase transition, and the exponential Bose-glass line characteristic of heavy ion-irradiated crystals. The introduction of a large density of columnar defects in %underdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ crystals does not, at sufficiently low vortex densities, increase the irreversibility line beyond the first order transition (FOT) field of pristine crystals. At such low fields, the flux line wandering length $r_{w}$ behaves as in pristine %Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ crystals. Next, vortex positional correlations along the $c$--axis in the vortex Bose glass at fields above the FOT are smaller than in the low--field vortex solid. Third, the Bose-glass-to-vortex liquid transition is signaled by a rapid decrease in c-axis phase correlations. Using differential magneto-optical imaging, we address the question of mesoscopic inhomogeneity in underdoped Bi-2212 single crystals. Among other features, it is shown that an anomalous temperature dependence of the penetration field and of the first order transition (FOT) field of the vortex lattice in such crystals can be understood as arising from inhomogeneity. In certain materials with strong electron correlations a quantum phase transition (QPT) at zero temperature can occur, in the proximity of which a quantum critical state of matter has been anticipated. This possibility has recently attracted much attention because the response of such a state of matter is expected to follow universal patterns defined by the quantum mechanical nature of the fluctuations. Forementioned universality manifests itself through power-law behaviours of the response functions. Candidates are found both in heavy fermion systems and in the cuprate high Tc superconductors. Although there are indications for quantum criticality in the cuprate superconductors, the reality and the physical nature of such a QPT are still under debate. Here we identify a universal behaviour of the phase angle of the frequency dependent conductivity that is characteristic of the quantum critical region. We demonstrate that the experimentally measured phase angle agrees precisely with the exponent of the optical conductivity. The flow properties of confined vortex matter driven through disordered mesoscopic channels are investigated by mode locking (ML) experiments. The observed ML effects allow to trace the evolution of both the structure and the number of confined rows and their match to the channel width as function of magnetic field. From a detailed analysis of the ML behavior for the case of 3-rows we obtain ({\it i}) the pinning frequency $f_p$, ({\it ii}) the onset frequency $f_c$ for ML ($\propto$ ordering velocity) and ({\it iii}) the fraction $L_{ML}/L$ of coherently moving 3-row regions in the channel. The field dependence of these quantities shows that, at matching, where $L_{ML}$ is maximum, the pinning strength is small and the ordering velocity is low, while at mismatch, where $L_{ML}$ is small, both the pinning force and the ordering velocity are enhanced. Further, we find that $f_c \propto f_p^2$, consistent with the dynamic ordering theory of Koshelev and Vinokur. We have studied the flow properties of vortices driven through easy flow mesoscopic channels by means of the mode locking (ML) technique. We observe a ML jump with large voltage broadening in the real part of the rf-impedance. Upon approaching the pure dc flow by reducing the rf amplitude, the ML jump is smeared out via a divergence of the voltage width. We observed mode-locking (ML) of rf-dc driven vortex arrays in a superconducting weak pinning a-NbGe film. The ML voltage shows the expected scaling $V\propto f\sqrt{B}$ with $f$ the rf-frequency and $B$ the magnetic field. For large dc-velocity (corresponding to a large ML frequency), the ML current step width exhibits a squared Bessel function dependence on the rf-amplitude as predicted for ML of a lattice moving elastically through a random potential., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. We study {\em dynamic} melting of confined vortex matter moving in disordered, mesoscopic channels by mode-locking experiments. The dynamic melting transition, characterized by a collapse of the mode-locking effect, strongly depends on the frequency, i.e. on the average velocity of the vortices. The associated dynamic ordering velocity diverges upon approaching the equilibrium melting line $T_{m,e}(B)$ as $v_c \sim (T_{m,e}-T)^{-1}$. We study the depinning transition of a driven chain-like system in the presence of frustration and quenched disorder. The analysis is motivated by recent transport experiments on artificial vortex-flow channels in superconducting thin films. We start with a London description of the vortices and then map the problem onto a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model and its continuous equivalent, the sine-Gordon model. In the absence of disorder, frustration reduces the depinning threshold in the commensurate phase, which nearly vanishes in the incommensurate regime. Depinning of the driven frustrated chain occurs via unstable configurations that are localized at the boundaries of the sample and evolve into topological defects which move freely through the entire sample. In the presence of disorder, topological defects can also be generated in the bulk. Further, disorder leads to pinning of topological defects. We find that weak disorder effectively reduces the depinning threshold in the commensurate phase, but increases the threshold in the incommensurate phase., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

We present the results of a study of vortex arrangements in the peak-effect regime of 2H-NbSe_2 by scanning tunneling microscopy. By slowly increasing the temperature in a constant magnetic field, we observed a sharp transition from collective vortex motion to positional fluctuations of individual vortices at the temperature which coincides with the onset of the peak effect in ac-susceptibility. Vortex thermal fluctuations in heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Tc=69.4 K) are studied using Josephson plasma resonance (JPR). From the data in zero magnetic field, we obtain the penetration depth along the c-axis, lambda_{L,c}(0) = 229 micrometers and the anisotropy ratio gamma(0) = 600. The low plasma frequency allows us to study phase correlations over the whole vortex solid (Bragg-glass) state. The JPR results yield a wandering length r_{w} of vortex pancakes. The temperature dependence of r_{w} as well as its increase with applied dc magnetic field can only be explained by the renormalization of the tilt modulus by thermal fluctuations, and suggest the latter is responsible for the dissociation of the vortices at the first order transition., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. We investigated the driven dynamics of vortices confined to mesoscopic flow channels by means of a dc-rf interference technique. The observed mode-locking steps in the $IV$-curves provide detailed information on how the number of rows and lattice structure in the channel change with magnetic field. Minima in flow stress occur when an integer number of rows is moving coherently, while maxima appear when incoherent motion of mixed $n$ and $n\pm 1$ row configurations is predominant. We study depinning of vortex chains in channels formed by static, disordered vortex arrays. Depinning is governed either by the barrier for defect nucleation or for defect motion, depending on whether the chain periodicity is commensurate or incommensurate with the surrounding arrays. We analyze the reduction of the gap between these barriers as function of disorder. At large disorder, commensurability becomes irrelevant and the pinning force is reduced to a small fraction of the ideal shear strength of ordered channels. Vortex matter phase transitions in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 were studied using local magnetization measurements combined with a vortex 'shaking' technique. The measurements revealed thermodynamic evidence of a first-order transition along the second magnetization peak line, at temperatures below the apparent critical point Tcp. We found that the first-order transition line does not terminate at Tcp, but continues down to at least 30 K. This observation suggests that the ordered vortex lattice phase is destroyed through a unified first-order transition that changes its character from thermally induced melting at high temperatures to a disorder-induced transition at low temperatures. Interlayer tunneling resistivity is used to probe the low-energy density-of-states (DOS) depletion due to the pseudogap in the normal state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$. Measurements up to 60 T reveal that a field that restores DOS to its ungapped state shows strikingly different temperature and doping dependencies from the characteristic fields of the superconducting state. The pseudogap closing field and the pseudogap temperature $T^{\star}$ evaluated independently are related through a simple Zeeman energy scaling. Inverse melting, in which a crystal reversibly transforms into a liquid or amorphous phase upon decreasing the temperature, is considered to be very rare in nature. The search for such an unusual equilibrium phenomenon is often hampered by the formation of nonequilibrium states which conceal the thermodynamic phase transition, or by intermediate phases, as was recently shown in a polymeric system. Here we report a first-order inverse melting of the magnetic flux line lattice in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductor. At low temperatures, the material disorder causes significant pinning of the vortices, which prevents observation of their equilibrium properties. Using a newly introduced 'vortex dithering' technique we were able to equilibrate the vortex lattice. As a result, direct thermodynamic evidence of inverse melting transition is found, at which a disordered vortex phase transforms into an ordered lattice with increasing temperature. Paradoxically, the structurally ordered lattice has larger entropy than the disordered phase. This finding shows that the destruction of the ordered vortex lattice occurs along a unified first-order transition line that gradually changes its character from thermally-induced melting at high temperatures to a disorder-induced transition at low temperatures., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, Nature, In press
