Introduction Measurement of ventricles of the brain is important for evaluating changes due to growth, ageing, intrinsic and extrinsic pathologies. The aim of this study was to determine the various parameters of the third ventricle and to assess their association with gender and age using computed tomography (CT) scans of head. MethodsThis retrospective, quantitative, cross sectional study was performed in the Department of Radiology and Imaging, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital from July to October 2019 (4 months) on images of 100 patients (50 males and 50 females) whose age group were 18-87 years, who underwent non-contrast and contrast enhanced CT scan of head. ResultsThe total mean of width of third ventricle was found to be 0.33±0.09 cm, 0.35±0.10 cm in male and 0.31±0.06 cm in female. Third ventricle width (TVW) showed statistically significant correlation with male and also with Age. Mean of third ventricle sylvian fissure distance index was 0.41±0.67 cm, 0.42±0.65 cm in male and 0.39±0.06 cm in female respectively. Mean of third ventricle ratio was 0.03±0.09 cm, 0.03±0.09 cm in male and 0.02±0.09 in female respectively. The value were slightly higher in male. ConclusionThe third ventricle width in CT in this study was 0.33±0.09 cm. CT was very useful to determine the upper limits of normal value and its variation with age.

The economic and health crises related to the COVID-19 pandemic raised considerable concern about child and family diet, especially among small-holder farming households in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In rural Nepal, 309 families (including 368 children aged 6–66 months) were enrolled pre-COVID-19 in a prospective study of a nutrition education intervention and family milk consumption. The intervention could not be implemented due to COVID-19; however, child and family diet was assessed in three household surveys (one before and two during the pandemic). Over time, after adjusting for child and household factors, child and family diet quality declined (reduced diet diversity, consumption of milk and animal-source-foods (ASF)). However, in dairy-animal-owning (vs. non-dairy-animal-owning) households, both children and family were more likely to consume milk (aOR respectively 2.88× (p < 0.05), 5.81× (p < 0.001)). Similarly, in households producing >3.5 L/d milk (vs. ≤3.5 L/d), children and family members were more likely to consume milk (respectively 7.45× and 11.88× (both p < 0.001)). Thus, the overall decline in child and family diet quality, especially related to milk consumption, was buffered independently by household ownership of ≥1 dairy animals (cow or buffalo) and by milk production >3.5 L/day. A better understanding of these protective factors might facilitate the development of interventions to promote resilience in future crises.

Detailed post mortem analyses of 68 free-ranging, slaughter-age pigs from two sites in the Banke District of Nepal identified 36% as being infected with Echinococcus granulosus. The cysts ranged from infertile, immature cysts a few millimetres in diameter to fertile cysts >10 cm in diameter. PCR RFLP and DNA sequencing identified the cysts as being E. granulosus sensu stricto. The Banke district has recently been identified as having a high prevalence of porcine cysticercosis. These data suggest that cestode zoonoses in this, and possibly other parts of Nepal may be a serious concern for human health. An assessment of the level of human cystic echinococcosis and neurocysticercosis, in the region is warranted and the introduction of control measures are required to limit the parasites' transmission.

Household surveys are an important tool for assessing the status or trends of rural households, farms, and communities, and for conducting research. Conducting surveys in rural communities in developing countries is expensive and logistically challenging. We investigated whether primary school children could efficiently collect household or farm data as part of their homework. We hypothesised that primary school students can collect accurate data and therefore it should not be different from the data collected by trained interviewers. The results indicate that primary schools may be an excellent resource for efficiently collecting information about rural households and farm families in developing countries.

Foodborne disease poses several major threats toward attaining sustainable improvements in food and nutrition security (FNS), on a global scale. These threats have numerous rippling effects on public health, economic growth, and country development. This article—based on a review of literature and experience from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems (LSIL) research activities—seeks to explore and summarize current and ongoing efforts to improve safety of animal-source foods, as well as to identify the interconnected elements of food safety and FNS. This article focuses on emerging evidence for the disease and economic burdens of foodborne disease; source attribution; previous investments in food safety; and current challenges and opportunities.
