Fermented dairy products, including yogurt, are widely consumed for their nutritional and health benefits. While numerous methods exist to monitor and understand yogurt fermentation, the literature lacks an integrated evaluation of diverse sensing approaches within a single experimental framework. To address this gap, this study systematically examines and compares multiple measurement techniques--electrical impedance, DC resistance, pH, optical transparency, carbon dioxide concentration, ambient temperature, and relative humidity--in tracking the yogurt fermentation process. By presenting a unified set of experimental results and assessing each method's observational characteristics, this work offers an encompassing reference point for researchers seeking to understand the relative merits and limitations of different sensing modalities. This study reveals the vulnerabilities of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) sensing, under the scope of joint communication and sensing (JCAS), focusing on target spoofing and deceptive jamming techniques. We use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to explore how adversaries can exploit WLAN's sensing capabilities to inject false targets and disrupt normal operations. Unlike traditional methods that require sophisticated digital radio-frequency memory hardware, we demonstrate that much simpler software-defined radios can effectively serve as deceptive jammers in WLAN settings. Through comprehensive modeling and practical experiments, we show how deceptive jammers can manipulate the range-Doppler map (RDM) by altering signal integrity, thereby posing significant security threats to OFDM-based JCAS systems. Our findings comprehensively evaluate jammer impact on RDMs and propose several jamming strategies that vary in complexity and detectability.

We investigate an uplink MIMO-OFDM localization scenario where a legitimate base station (BS) aims to localize a user equipment (UE) using pilot signals transmitted by the UE, while an unauthorized BS attempts to localize the UE by eavesdropping on these pilots, posing a risk to the UE's location privacy. To enhance legitimate localization performance while protecting the UE's privacy, we formulate an optimization problem regarding the beamformers at the UE, aiming to minimize the Cram\'er-Rao bound (CRB) for legitimate localization while constraining the CRB for unauthorized localization above a threshold. A penalty dual decomposition optimization framework is employed to solve the problem, leading to a novel beamforming approach for location privacy preservation. Effective decision-making in automation equipment selection is critical for reducing ramp-up time and maintaining production quality, especially in the face of increasing product variation and market demands. However, limited expertise and resource constraints often result in inefficiencies during the ramp-up phase when new products are integrated into production lines. Existing methods often lack structured and tailored solutions to support automation engineers in reducing ramp-up time, leading to compromises in quality. This research investigates whether large-language models (LLMs), combined with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), can assist in streamlining equipment selection in ramp-up planning. We propose a factual-driven copilot integrating LLMs with structured and semi-structured knowledge retrieval for three component types (robots, feeders and vision systems), providing a guided and traceable state-machine process for decision-making in automation equipment selection. The system was demonstrated to an industrial partner, who tested it on three internal use-cases. Their feedback affirmed its capability to provide logical and actionable recommendations for automation equipment. Despite remarkable progress in image generation models, generating realistic hands remains a persistent challenge due to their complex articulation, varying viewpoints, and frequent occlusions. We present FoundHand, a large-scale domain-specific diffusion model for synthesizing single and dual hand images. To train our model, we introduce FoundHand-10M, a large-scale hand dataset with 2D keypoints and segmentation mask annotations. Our insight is to use 2D hand keypoints as a universal representation that encodes both hand articulation and camera viewpoint. FoundHand learns from image pairs to capture physically plausible hand articulations, natively enables precise control through 2D keypoints, and supports appearance control. Our model exhibits core capabilities that include the ability to repose hands, transfer hand appearance, and even synthesize novel views. This leads to zero-shot capabilities for fixing malformed hands in previously generated images, or synthesizing hand video sequences. We present extensive experiments and evaluations that demonstrate state-of-the-art performance of our method.

Distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output networks utilize a large number of distributed access points (APs) to serve multiple user equipments (UEs), offering significant potential for both communication and localization. However, these networks require frequent phase and time calibration between distributed antennas due to oscillator phase drifts, crucial for reciprocity-based coherent beamforming and accurate localization. While this calibration is typically performed through bi-directional measurements between antennas, it can be simplified to unidirectional measurement under perfect knowledge of antenna locations. This paper extends a recent phase calibration narrowband line-of-sight (LoS) model to a phase and time calibration wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing model, including both LoS and reflection paths and allowing for joint phase and time calibrations. We explore different scenarios, considering whether or not prior knowledge of antenna locations and the map is available. For each case, we introduce a practical maximum likelihood estimator and conduct Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analyses to benchmark performance. Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) networks enhance coverage and spectral efficiency (SE) by distributing antennas across access points (APs) with phase coherence between APs. However, the use of cost-efficient local oscillators (LOs) introduces phase noise (PN) that compromises phase coherence, even with centralized processing. Sharing an LO across APs can reduce costs in specific configurations but cause correlated PN between APs, leading to correlated interference that affects centralized combining. This can be improved by exploiting the PN correlation in channel estimation. This paper presents an uplink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal model for PN-impaired cell-free mMIMO, addressing gaps in single-carrier signal models. We evaluate mismatches from applying single-carrier methods to OFDM systems, showing how they underestimate the impact of PN and produce over-optimistic achievable SE predictions. Based on our OFDM signal model, we propose two PN-aware channel and common phase error estimators: a distributed estimator for uncorrelated PN with separate LOs and a centralized estimator with shared LOs. We introduce a deep learning-based channel estimator to enhance the performance and reduce the number of iterations of the centralized estimator. 6G networks aim to enable applications like autonomous driving by providing complementary localization services through key technologies such as non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) with low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). Prior research in 6G localization using single LEO, multi-LEO, and multi-LEO multi-RIS setups has limitations: single LEO lacks the required accuracy, while multi-LEO/RIS setups demand many visible satellites and RISs, which is not always feasible in practice. This paper explores the novel problem of localization with a single LEO satellite and a single RIS, bridging these research areas. We present a comprehensive signal model accounting for user carrier frequency offset (CFO), clock bias, and fast and slow Doppler effects. Additionally, we derive a low-complexity estimator that achieves theoretical bounds at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Despite AI advancements, individuals without software or hardware expertise still face barriers in designing wearable electronic devices due to the lack of code-free prototyping tools. To eliminate these barriers, we designed ProtoBot, leveraging large language models, and conducted a case study with four professionals from different disciplines through playful interaction. The study resulted in four unique wearable device concepts, with participants using Protobot to prototype selected components. From this experience, we learned that (1) uncertainty can be turned into a positive experience, (2) the ProtoBot should transform to reliably act as a guide, and (3) users need to adjust design parameters when interacting with the prototypes. Our work demonstrates, for the first time, the use of large language models in rapid prototyping of wearable electronics. Gain-phase impairments (GPIs) affect both communication and sensing in 6G integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). We study the effect of GPIs in a single-input, multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing ISAC system and develop a model-based unsupervised learning approach to simultaneously (i) estimate the gain-phase errors and (ii) localize sensing targets. The proposed method is based on the optimal maximum a-posteriori ratio test for a single target. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are key enablers for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems in the 6G communication era. With the capability of dynamically shaping the channel, RISs can enhance communication coverage. Additionally, RISs can serve as additional anchors with high angular resolution to improve localization and sensing services in extreme scenarios. However, knowledge of anchors' states such as position, orientation, and hardware impairments are crucial for localization and sensing applications, requiring dedicated calibration, including geometry and hardware calibration. This paper provides an overview of various types of RIS calibration, their impacts, and the challenges they pose in ISAC systems.

Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) systems emerge as a promising technology in beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks to support the deployment of distributed architectures. This paper explores the use of ELAAs to enable joint localization, synchronization and mapping in sub-6 GHz uplink channels, capitalizing on the near-field effects of phase-coherent distributed arrays. We focus on a scenario where a single-antenna user equipment (UE) communicates with a network of access points (APs) distributed in an indoor environment, considering both specular reflections from walls and scattering from objects. The UE is assumed to be unsynchronized to the network, while the APs can be time- and phase-synchronized to each other. We formulate the problem of joint estimation of location, clock offset and phase offset of the UE, and the locations of scattering points (SPs) (i.e., mapping). Through comprehensive Fisher information analysis, we assess the impact of bandwidth, AP array size, wall reflections, SPs and phase synchronization on localization accuracy. Furthermore, we derive the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator, which optimally combines the information collected by all the distributed arrays. To overcome its intractable high dimensionality, we propose a novel three-step algorithm that first estimates phase offset leveraging carrier phase information of line-of-sight (LoS) paths, then determines the UE location and clock offset via LoS paths and wall reflections, and finally locates SPs using a null-space transformation technique. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in distributed architectures supported by radio stripes (RSs) -- an innovative alternative for implementing ELAAs -- while revealing the benefits of carrier phase exploitation and showcasing the interplay between delay and angular information under different bandwidth regimes.

Thermal soaring enables birds to perform cost-efficient flights during foraging or migration trips. Yet, although all soaring birds exploit vertical winds effectively, this group contains species that vary strongly in their morphologies. Aerodynamic rules dictate the costs and benefits of flight, but, depending on their ecological needs, species may use different behavioural strategies. To quantify these morphology-related differences in behavioural cross-country strategies, we compiled and analysed a large dataset, which includes data from over a hundred individuals from 12 soaring species recorded with high frequency tracking devices. We quantified the performance during thermalling and gliding flights, and the overall cross-country behaviour that is the combination of both. Our results confirmed aerodynamic theory across the 12 species; species with higher wing loading typically flew faster, and consequently turned on a larger radius, than lighter ones. Furthermore, the combination of circling radius and minimum sink speed determines the maximum benefits soaring birds can obtain from thermals. Also, we observed a spectrum of strategies regarding the adaptivity to thermal strength and uncovered a universal rule for cross-country strategies for all analysed species. In this paper, we investigate 3-D localization and frequency synchronization with multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO) for a stationary user equipment (UE). In line with the 6G goals of sustainability and efficiency, we focus on a frugal communication scenario with minimal spatial and spectral resources (i.e., narrowband single-input single-ouput system), considering both the presence and blockage of the line-of-sight (LoS) path between the base station (BS) and the UE. We design a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT)-based LoS detector, channel parameter estimation and localization algorithms, with varying complexity. To verify the efficiency of our estimators, we compare the root mean-squared error (RMSE) to the Cram\'er- Rao bound (CRB) of the unknown parameters. We also evaluate the sensitivity of our algorithms to the presence of uncontrolled multi-path components (MPC) and various levels of CFO. Simulation results showcase the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms under minimal hardware and spectral requirements, and a wide range of operating conditions, thereby confirming the viability of RIS-aided frugal localization in 6G scenarios., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

In this paper, we investigate a non-lineof-sight (NLOS) sensing problem at terahertz frequencies. To be able to observe the targets shadowed by a blockage, we propose a method using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). We employ a bistatic radar system and scan the obstructed area with RIS using hierarchical codebooks (HCB). Moreover, we propose an iterative maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) scheme to yield the optimum sensing accuracy, converging to Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). We take band-specific effects such as diffraction and beam squint into account and show that these effects are relevant factors affecting localization performance in RIS-employed radar setups. The results show that under NLOS conditions, the system can still localize all the targets with very good accuracy using the RIS. The initial estimates obtained by the HCBs can provide centimeter-level accuracy, and when the optimal performance is needed, at the cost of a few extra transmissions, the proposed iterative MLE method improves the accuracy to sub-millimeter accuracy, yielding the position error bound., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to IEEE Access

This paper addresses the topic of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in 5G and emerging 6G wireless networks. ISAC systems operate within shared, congested or even contested spectrum, aiming to deliver high performance in both wireless communications and radio frequency (RF) sensing. The expected benefits include more efficient utilization of spectrum, power, hardware (HW) and antenna resources. Focusing on multicarrier (MC) systems, which represent the most widely used communication waveforms, it explores the co-design and optimization of waveforms alongside multiantenna transceiver signal processing for communications and both monostatic and bistatic sensing applications of ISAC. Moreover, techniques of high practical relevance for overcoming and even harnessing challenges posed by non-idealities in actual transceiver implementations are considered. To operate in highly dynamic radio environments and target scenarios, both model-based structured optimization and learning-based methodologies for ISAC systems are covered, assessing their adaptability and learning capabilities under real-world conditions. Sidelink positioning research predominantly focuses on the snapshot positioning problem, often within the mmWave band. Only a limited number of studies have delved into vehicle-to-anything (V2X) tracking within sub-6 GHz bands. In this paper, we investigate the V2X sidelink tracking challenges over sub-6 GHz frequencies. We propose a Kalman-filter-based tracking approach that leverages the estimated error covariance lower bounds (EECLBs) as measurement covariance, alongside a gating method to augment tracking performance. Through simulations employing ray-tracing data and super-resolution channel parameter estimation, we validate the feasibility of sidelink tracking using our proposed tracking filter with two novel EECLBs. Additionally, we demonstrate the efficacy of the gating method in identifying line-of-sight paths and enhancing tracking performance.

The omega-regular separability problem for B\"uchi VASS coverability languages has recently been shown to be decidable, but with an EXPSPACE lower and a non-primitive recursive upper bound -- the exact complexity remained open. We close this gap and show that the problem is EXPSPACE-complete. A careful analysis of our complexity bounds additionally yields a PSPACE procedure in the case of fixed dimension >= 1, which matches a pre-established lower bound of PSPACE for one dimensional B\"uchi VASS. Our algorithm is a non-deterministic search for a witness whose size, as we show, can be suitably bounded. Part of the procedure is to decide the existence of runs in VASS that satisfy certain non-linear properties. Therefore, a key technical ingredient is to analyze a class of systems of inequalities where one variable may occur in non-linear (polynomial) expressions. These so-called singly non-linear systems (SNLS) take the form A(x).y >= b(x), where A(x) and b(x) are a matrix resp. a vector whose entries are polynomials in x, and y ranges over vectors in the rationals. Our main contribution on SNLS is an exponential upper bound on the size of rational solutions to singly non-linear systems. The proof consists of three steps. First, we give a tailor-made quantifier elimination to characterize all real solutions to x. Second, using the root separation theorem about the distance of real roots of polynomials, we show that if a rational solution exists, then there is one with at most polynomially many bits. Third, we insert the solution for x into the SNLS, making it linear and allowing us to invoke standard solution bounds from convex geometry. Finally, we combine the results about SNLS with several techniques from the area of VASS to devise an EXPSPACE decision procedure for omega-regular separability of B\"uchi VASS.

This study presented the first light curve analysis of the OP Boo and V0511 Cam binary stars, which was conducted in the frame of the Binary Systems of South and North (BSN) Project. Photometric ground-based observations were conducted with standard filters at two observatories in the Czech Republic. We computed a new ephemeris for each of the systems using our extracted times of minima, TESS data, and additional literature. Linear fits for O-C diagrams of both systems were considered using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The light curves were analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (WD) binary code combined with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The light curve solutions of both target systems required a cold starspot. The absolute parameters of the systems were calculated by using a P-M parameter relationship. The positions of the systems were also depicted on the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR), P-L, logMtot-logJ0, and T-M diagrams. The second component in both systems is determined to be a more massive and hotter star. Numerous sign language datasets exist, yet they typically cover only a limited selection of the thousands of signs used globally. Moreover, creating diverse sign language datasets is an expensive and challenging task due to the costs associated with gathering a varied group of signers. Motivated by these challenges, we aimed to develop a solution that addresses these limitations. In this context, we focused on textually describing body movements from skeleton keypoint sequences, leading to the creation of a new dataset. We structured this dataset around AUTSL, a comprehensive isolated Turkish sign language dataset. We also developed a baseline model, SkelCap, which can generate textual descriptions of body movements. This model processes the skeleton keypoints data as a vector, applies a fully connected layer for embedding, and utilizes a transformer neural network for sequence-to-sequence modeling. We conducted extensive evaluations of our model, including signer-agnostic and sign-agnostic assessments. The model achieved promising results, with a ROUGE-L score of 0.98 and a BLEU-4 score of 0.94 in the signer-agnostic evaluation. Future wireless networks will integrate sensing, learning and communication to provide new services beyond communication and to become more resilient. Sensors at the network infrastructure, sensors on the user equipment, and the sensing capability of the communication signal itself provide a new source of data that connects the physical and radio frequency environments. A wireless network that harnesses all these sensing data can not only enable additional sensing services, but also become more resilient to channel-dependent effects like blockage and better support adaptation in dynamic environments as networks reconfigure. In this paper, we provide a vision for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks and an overview of how signal processing, optimization and machine learning techniques can be leveraged to make them a reality in the context of 6G. We also include some examples of the performance of several of these strategies when evaluated using a simulation framework based on a combination of ray tracing measurements and mathematical models that mix the digital and physical worlds.

Future generations of mobile networks call for concurrent sensing and communication functionalities in the same hardware and/or spectrum. Compared to communication, sensing services often suffer from limited coverage, due to the high path loss of the reflected signal and the increased infrastructure requirements. To provide a more uniform quality of service, distributed multiple input multiple output (D-MIMO) systems deploy a large number of distributed nodes and efficiently control them, making distributed integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) possible. In this paper, we investigate ISAC in D-MIMO through the lens of different design architectures and deployments, revealing both conflicts and synergies. In addition, simulation and demonstration results reveal both opportunities and challenges towards the implementation of ISAC in D-MIMO.

We present EgoPoseFormer, a simple yet effective transformer-based model for stereo egocentric human pose estimation. The main challenge in egocentric pose estimation is overcoming joint invisibility, which is caused by self-occlusion or a limited field of view (FOV) of head-mounted cameras. Our approach overcomes this challenge by incorporating a two-stage pose estimation paradigm: in the first stage, our model leverages the global information to estimate each joint's coarse location, then in the second stage, it employs a DETR style transformer to refine the coarse locations by exploiting fine-grained stereo visual features. In addition, we present a Deformable Stereo Attention operation to enable our transformer to effectively process multi-view features, which enables it to accurately localize each joint in the 3D world. We evaluate our method on the stereo UnrealEgo dataset and show it significantly outperforms previous approaches while being computationally efficient: it improves MPJPE by 27.4mm (45% improvement) with only 7.9% model parameters and 13.1% FLOPs compared to the state-of-the-art. Surprisingly, with proper training settings, we find that even our first-stage pose proposal network can achieve superior performance compared to previous arts. We also show that our method can be seamlessly extended to monocular settings, which achieves state-of-the-art performance on the SceneEgo dataset, improving MPJPE by 25.5mm (21% improvement) compared to the best existing method with only 60.7% model parameters and 36.4% FLOPs. The light curve analyses and orbital period variations for two contact binary stars, LS Del and V997 Cyg, were presented in this work which was conducted in the frame of the Binary Systems of South and North (BSN) Project. Ground-based photometric observations were performed at two observatories in France. We used the TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) data for extracting times of minima and light curve analysis of the target systems. The O-C diagram for both systems displays a parabolic trend. LS Del and V997 Cyg's orbital periods are increasing at a rate of dP/dt= 7.20*10^{-08} d yr^{-1} and dP/dt= 2.54*10^{-08} d yr^{-1}, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the mass is being transferred from the less massive star to the more massive component with a rate of dM/dt= -1.96*10^{-7} M_Sun yr^{-1} for the LS Del system, and dM/dt= -3.83*10^{-7} M_Sun yr^{-1} for V997 Cyg. The parameters of the third possible object in the system were also considered. The PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs (PHOEBE) Python code was used to analyze the light curves. The light curve solutions needed a cold starspot due to the asymmetry in the LS Del system's light curve maxima. The mass ratio, fill-out factor, and star temperature all indicate that both systems are contact binary types in this investigation. Two methods were used to estimate the absolute parameters of the systems: one method used the parallax of Gaia DR3, and the other used a P-M relationship. The positions of the systems were also depicted on the M-L, M-R, q-L_{ratio}, and logM_{tot}-logJ_0 diagrams. SGR J1935+2154 has truly been the most prolific magnetar over the last decade: It has been entering into burst active episodes once every 1-2 years since its discovery in 2014, it emitted the first Galactic fast radio burst associated with an X-ray burst in 2020, and has emitted hundreds of energetic short bursts. Here, we present the time-resolved spectral analysis of 51 bright bursts from SGR J1935+2154. Unlike conventional time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic studies in the literature, we follow a two-step approach to probe true spectral evolution. For each burst, we first extract spectral information from overlapping time segments, fit them with three continuum models, and employ a machine learning based clustering algorithm to identify time segments that provide the largest spectral variations during each burst. We then extract spectra from those non-overlapping (clustered) time segments and fit them again with the three models: the cutoff power-law model, the sum of two blackbody functions, and the model considering the emission of a modified black body undergoing resonant cyclotron scattering, which is applied systematically at this scale for the first time. Our novel technique allowed us to establish the genuine spectral evolution of magnetar bursts. This article introduces the Design Thinking Based Iterative Sensor and Actuator Selection Flow, a structured decision-making approach aimed at streamlining this essential, yet often complex task. Created to accommodate individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise, our approach is uniquely suited for interdisciplinary teams of designers and engineers. Through the application of the flow to four real-world case studies, we highlight its broad applicability and demonstrate its efficacy in expediting project timelines and enhancing resource utilization. Our work lays a foundation for a more streamlined and user-centered process in selecting sensors and actuators, significantly benefiting the practice of interactive system design.
