Abstract

Taking advantage of a large ensemble of Convection Permitting‐Regional Climate Models on a pan‐Alpine domain and of an object‐oriented dedicated analysis, this study aims to investigate future changes in high‐impact fall Mediterranean Heavy Precipitation Events at high warming levels. We identify a robust multi‐model agreement for an increased frequency from central Italy to the northern Balkans combined with a substantial extension of the affected areas, for a dominant influence of the driving Global Climate Models for projecting changes in the frequency, and for an increase in intensity, area, volume and severity over the French Mediterranean. However, large quantitative uncertainties persist despite the use of convection‐permitting models, with no clear agreement in frequency changes over southeastern France and a large range of plausible changes in events' properties, including for the most intense events. Model diversity and international coordination are still needed to provide policy‐relevant climate information regarding precipitation extremes. Plain Language Summary: Despite growing computational resources and multiple model developments, projecting future changes in the high‐impact Mediterranean Heavy Precipitation Events remains both a numerical and scientific challenge. The present study takes advantage of the recent availability of a relatively large ensemble of high resolution Regional Climate Models (2–3 km), which represent a step change in the simulation of precipitation extremes, and of an object‐oriented approach, allowing us to track the convective precipitating systems on an hourly basis. Looking at future changes in fall Mediterranean Heavy Precipitation Events at high warming levels, we identify a robust multi‐model agreement for an increased frequency from central Italy to the northern Balkans combined with a substantial expansion of the affected areas, and an increase in intensity, area, volume and severity over the French Mediterranean. However, considerable uncertainties remain in terms of frequency over parts of the domain arising from uncertainty in changes in large scale weather patterns, and in terms of degree of intensification for the most intense events. It suggests the need for model diversity and for more coordinated high resolution climate projections with careful selection of different driving global models in order to provide policy‐relevant climate information regarding precipitation extremes. This document consists of a summary of the components of the models contributing future regional climate change simulations to the Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX, http://cordex.org) initiative (Table 1), the institutions and contacts for the simulations (Table 2), and references for all components. Version 1.0 (2021-01-31) of this resource contributed to the IPCC AR6 WGI report (IPCC 2021: AnnexII), see version history. 34. Identification of regions with a robust increase of heavy precipitation events.

Abstract

Global climate change is increasingly associated with the increase and/or the intensification of extreme weather such as heat waves, droughts, or heavy precipitation events. However, the characteristics and severity of these changes can vary considerably by region and season. This study focuses on heavy and extreme precipitation events over Europe for the time period 1951–2099. The main objective is to identify regions which show a robust and therefore reliable change in such events with ongoing climate change. The study is based on daily precipitation values from 40 regional climate simulations of the EURO-CORDEX ensemble with a spatial resolution of 12 km (EUR-11). Future changes were investigated using four different metrics, which are sensitive to alterations in the number and intensity of the detected events and consider an accumulated precipitation amount over a selected threshold and two return values for a 10- and a 100-year return period. Differences were detected between the climate scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, between summer and winter half-year, and between three different methods used to identify and quantify temporal changes from a reference period (1951–1980) to a future climate period (2070–2099). Furthermore, two criteria characterizing the robustness of the changes were used, i.e. a dominant agreement on the sign and a majority of significant changes within the full simulation ensemble. The analysis provided relative and absolute changes of the four metrics being used and the area fractions that exhibited a robust change. With all methods applied, our study clearly confirms a significant increase in heavy and extreme precipitation in northern, central, and eastern Europe and a robust decrease in heavy, but not very extreme events in the southwest of the Euro-CORDEX domain associated with projected future climate change. For large parts of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, a tendency towards decreasing intensities (down to -11 mm/year for the accumulated threshold exceedance) become visible but without the evidence of robustness. Both, the intensity and the area with robust changes in heavy and extreme events prove to be significantly stronger in the RCP8.5 than in the RCP4.5 scenario. For Central Europe, for example, the accumulated threshold exceedance increases from 15 mm/year to 24 mm/year and the 100-year return value from 21 mm/day to 30 mm/day. The related robust area fractions extend from 31 % to 99 % and from 61 % to 95 %, respectively. The relative changes are substantial, even averaged over larger areas, with values greater than 100 % (50 %) for the severe events and up to 40 % (30 %) for the very extreme events in the RCP8.5 (RCP4.5) scenario. Heavy events increase relatively more in winter (for Central Europe +117 % for the accumulated threshold exceedance in RCP 8.5) than in summer (+81 %). The opposite is true for the extreme events with a weaker increase in winter than in summer (e.g. for Central Europe +26 % for the 100-year return value in winter and +43 % in summer). Abstract

In the last decade, the Climate Limited-area Modeling Community (CLM-Community) has contributed to the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) with an extensive set of regional climate simulations. Using several versions of the COSMO-CLM-Community model, ERA-Interim reanalysis and eight global climate models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) were dynamically downscaled with horizontal grid spacings of 0.44g (g1/4g50gkm), 0.22g (g1/4g25gkm), and 0.11g (g1/4g12gkm) over the CORDEX domains Europe, South Asia, East Asia, Australasia, and Africa. This major effort resulted in 80 regional climate simulations publicly available through the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) web portals for use in impact studies and climate scenario assessments. Here we review the production of these simulations and assess their results in terms of mean near-surface temperature and precipitation to aid the future design of the COSMO-CLM model simulations. It is found that a domain-specific parameter tuning is beneficial, while increasing horizontal model resolution (from 50 to 25 or 12gkm grid spacing) alone does not always improve the performance of the simulation. Moreover, the COSMO-CLM performance depends on the driving data. This is generally more important than the dependence on horizontal resolution, model version, and configuration. Abstract

In agricultural landscapes, climate change has profound impacts on species that society aims to conserve. In response to climate change, species may adapt spatially (with range shifts) and temporally (with phenological adaptations), which may make formerly effective conservation sites and measures less effective. As climate change also has an impact on yields, opportunity costs of land use-based conservation measures may also change spatially and with respect to the timing of conservation measures. Due to these spatio-temporal modifications of the costs of conservation measures and their impacts on species, formerly cost-effective conservation sites and measures may no longer be so in a changing climate. We combine ecologicaleconomic modelling with climate science to investigate climate change-induced modifications of the timing and spatial allocation of cost-effective conservation measures. We apply our model to the case study of conserving the large marsh grasshopper on agricultural grasslands in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Comparing the periods 2020-2039 and 2060-2079, our model indeed indicates that climate change induces modifications in the costeffective spatial allocation of conservation measures and that measures which are adapted to phenological changes remain cost-effective under climate change.
