The airborne lunar spectral irradiance mission is an inter-agency partnership between the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology that aims to make SI-traceable measurements of lunar spectral irradiance at visible to near-infrared wavelengths with unprecedented accuracy. This information is vital to using the Moon as a calibration source for Earth observing satellites. To minimize uncertainty, the lunar measurements are made above 90% of the Earth’s atmosphere from an Earth Resources 2 aircraft, a civilian descendant of the U-2 spy plane. Situated in a large wing pod, a custom-designed telescope automatically tracks the Moon and the measurements are fed into a spectrometer. This information is being used to develop an extremely accurate model that can be used to calibrate satellites. An Engineering Flight Campaign was completed in August 2018 and a Demonstration Flight Campaign in November 2019, which demonstrated autonomous lunar acquisition and tracking as well as measurements of the Moon’s spectral irradiance from an altitude of approximately 21 km. This article presents the simplified double gimbal control system design that was used to manipulate the telescope, and was capable of targeting the Moon with a root mean squared tracking error of about 0 . 1 ∘ .

This paper presents the mechanical design of a new robotic telescope that was designed and built to acquire lunar spectral measurements from the science pod of NASA's ER-2 aircraft while flying at an altitude of 70,000 feet (21.34 km). The robotic telescope used a double gimbal design that allowed for target tracking in azimuth and elevation. In addition to the challenging and restrictive geometry of the science pod, each component needed to be carefully selected to ensure that they could withstand the operating conditions at high altitude such as harsh temperatures extending as low as −54 °C and atmospheric pressure less than 1.05 psi (7.23 kPa). Due to the cold temperatures, low atmospheric pressure and the likely exposure to moisture, high strength industrial linear actuators were used to create an adjustable linkage system that controlled the pointing and tracking of the telescope. Although unconventional, this allowed for a robust design that outperformed the team's expectations by tracking the Moon for 40 min with an average tracking error under 0.05°. The results presented within this paper were acquired during a first set of engineering test flights, with further scientific missions to follow.

On Jan. 5, 2018, at the request of NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Committee on the Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space (ESAS) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Space Studies Board, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences released the 2017 Decadal Survey, “Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observations from Space” [1]. The 700-page document is the second such Earth sciences survey produced by NASEM. The first, “Earth Science and Applications from Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond,” was released in 2007. The 2018 study designated a global “Surface Biology and Geology” (SBG) investigation that would include both imaging spectroscopy and thermal infrared observations [1]. This suite of measurements would address a wide range of global science questions. Its themes include: flows of energy, carbon, water, and nutrients sustaining terrestrial and marine ecosystems; the variability of the land surface and the fluxes of water and energy; inventory of the world's volcanoes, and the composition and temperature of volcanic products immediately following eruptions; other natural hazards including wildfires; snow accumulation and melt; water balance from the headwaters to the continent; land and water use effects on evapotranspiration; functional traits and diversity of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and vegetation; and more. Figure 1 shows example spectra from these surfaces, illustrating the enormous diversity of scene content that would be observed. Tables 1 and 2 show examples of the core and higher-level products that the SBG mission would produce.

To monitor global environments from space, satellites must be calibrated accurately and consistently across time, missions and instruments. This requires the use of a stable, common reference that is continuously accessible to Earth observing satellites, whether they make up series of missions spanning long periods of time or comprise constellations acquiring many simultaneous observations across the planet. The Moon can serve well as such a common reference. Its surface reflectance is stable to within one part in 108. It is theorized that its radiant output with time changes repeatedly and very predictably with viewing and illumination geometry. In addition, it has a radiant flux more comparable to the Earth’s surface than the Sun and can be viewed directly by the instrument. Currently, to predict the lunar irradiance given an illumination and viewing geometry, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed the Robotic Lunar Observatory (ROLO) Model of exo-atmospheric lunar spectral irradiance. The USGS ROLO model represents the current most precise knowledge of lunar spectral irradiance and is used frequently as a relative calibration standard by space-borne Earth-observing sensors. Current knowledge of the Moon's spectral irradiance is thought to be limited to 5-10% uncertainty. However, monitoring changing Earth environments calls for an absolute lunar reference with higher accuracy. The development of the ROLO model and subsequent attempts to better characterize the lunar spectral irradiance cycle were based on observations made from the Earth surface. This requires applying corrections to remove effects of the atmosphere, which limits the accuracy. The Airborne LUnar Spectral Irradiance (Air-LUSI) system was developed to make highly accurate, SI-traceable measurements of lunar spectral irradiance from NASA’s ER-2 aircraft flying at 21 km, above 95% of the atmosphere. To that end, the air-LUSI system employs an autonomous, robotic telescope system that tracks the Moon in flight and a stable spectrometer housed in an enclosure providing a robustly controlled environment. During November 2019, the Air-LUSI system was demonstrated with flights on five consecutive nights acquiring observations of the Moon at lunar phases of 10°, 21°, 34°, 46°, and 59°. Air-LUSI is now ready for operational use. This paper provides an overview of this new capability and how it, along with other efforts underway, can help transform how we monitor the Earth from space.

Imaging spectroscopy has been identified by ESA, NASA and other international space agencies as key to addressing a number of most important scientific and environmental management objectives. To implement the critical EU- and related policies for the management of natural resources, assets and benefits, and to achieve the objectives outlined by NASA’s Decadal Survey in ecosystem science, hydrology and geology, high fidelity imaging spectroscopy data with global coverage and high spatial resolution are required. As such, ESA’s CHIME (Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment) and NASA’s SBG (Surface Biology and Geology) satellite missions aim to provide imaging spectroscopy data at global coverage at regular intervals of time with high spatial resolution.However, the scientific and applied objectives motivate more spatial coverage and more rapid revisit than any one agency’s observing system can provide. With the development of SBG and CHIME, the mid-to-late 2020s will see more global coverage spectroscopic observing systems, whereby these challenging needs can be more fully met by a multi-mission and multi-Agency synergetic approach, rather than by any single observing system.Therefore, an ESA-NASA cooperation on imaging spectroscopy space missions was seen as a priority for collaboration, specifically given the complementarity of mission objectives and measurement targets of the SBG and CHIME. Such cooperation is now being formalized as part of the ESA-NASA Joint Program Planning Group activities.Among the others, calibration and validation activities (Cal/Val) are fundamental for imaging spectroscopy while the satellites are in-orbit and operating. They determine the quality and integrity of the data provided by the spectrometers and become even more crucial when data from different satellites, carrying different imaging sensors, are used by users worldwide in a complementary and synergetic manner, like it will be the case for CHIME and SBG data. Indeed, Cal/Val activities not only have enormous downstream impacts on the accuracy and reliability of the products, but also facilitate cross-calibration and interoperability among several imaging spectrometers, supporting their synergistic use. Accordingly, within the context of this cooperation, a Working Group (WG) on Calibration/Validation has been set up, aiming to establish a roadmap for future SBG-CHIME coordination activities and collaborative studies.This contribution aims to outline the key areas of cooperation between SBG and CHIME in terms of Calibration and Validation, and present the establishment of a roadmap between the two missions, focusing on the following topics:Establishing an end-to-end cal/val strategy for seamless data products across missions, including transfer standards; Measurement Networks and commonly recognised Cal/Val reference sites; Status of atmospheric radiative transfer and atmospheric–correction procedures; Standardisation and Quality Control of reference data sets; Definition and implementation of joint airborne spectroscopy campaigns, such as the executed 2018 and planned 2021 campaigns, to simulate both missions and exercise the capabilities needed for eventual interoperability (incl. data collection, calibration, data product production); Continuous validation throughout the lifetime of products; Identifying other opportunities for efficiency and success through cooperation on calibration and validation, downlink capabilities and shared algorithms (e.g. compression and on-board data reduction).

The objective of the airborne lunar spectral irradiance (air-LUSI) project is to make low uncertainty, SI-traceable measurements of the LUSI in the visible to near-infrared region from an aircraft above most of the optically absorbing components of the atmosphere. The measurements are made from a NASA ER-2 aircraft, which can fly at altitudes of approximately 20 km above sea level. Air-LUSI measurements, corrected for residual atmospheric attenuation, are designed to provide a matrix of low uncertainty top-of-the-atmosphere lunar irradiances at known lunar phase and libration angles to be compared and combined with other lunar irradiance data sets to constrain the uncertainties in models of lunar irradiance and reflectance. The measurements are also expected to provide insight into the differences between models and satellite sensor measurements of lunar irradiance. This paper describes the development and characterization of the air-LUSI subsystem for acquiring lunar measurements, called the irradiance instrument subsystem, prior to flight.

A calibration/validation (cal/val) working group (CVWG) was established as part of a US government study of the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) observing system priority identified in the 2017 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine decadal survey of Earth sciences and applications [1]. The 2017 decadal survey recommended the SBG mission as a designated observable to improve measurements of Earth’s surface characteristics important for habitation, food, water, and many other natural resources. The candidate approach presented in the 2017 decadal survey was an imaging spectrometer spanning the visible and shortwave infrared (VSWIR) wavelength region and multi- or hyperspectral imagery in the thermal infrared (TIR). The SBG study is evaluating the candidate approach and other potential architectures in meeting science and application objectives. The SBG-CVWG, started in late 2018, has begun to identify elements of cal/val related to potential mission architectures. With the input of CVWG members and by engagement with the broader scientific community, other components of a cal/val framework are being defined including, pre-launch characterization and calibration, on-orbit calibration and monitoring, vicarious terrestrial/celestial calibration, data product validation, and intercomparison and potentially inter-calibration when multiple platforms are used.

air-LUSI is a NASA sponsored project which uses optical and robotic equipment to autonomously capture radiometric measurements of the Moon from within the science pod of an ER-2 aircraft while flying at an altitude of 70,000 feet. The air-LUSI instrument was deployed for its first engineering flight campaign on August 1st and 2nd, 2018 and captured the worlds first High Altitude Lunar Spectral Irradiance (LUSI) measurements from a semi-ground based system. By implementing instrumentation into NASA's ER-2 aircraft to produce an Airborne Lunar Observatory, unprecedented LUSI measurements can be obtained that are unadulterated from the Earth's atmosphere. By compiling a comprehensive LUSI dataset for a series of lunar phases, a Lunar Calibration Model can be further refined to provide enhanced remote sensing capabilities for some instruments in NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS). This document presents information about the flight path of the ER-2 to capture High Altitude LUSI measurements, the mechanical design of the robotic telescope, the environmental operating conditions of the design, the in flight tracking performance of the system, and the first raw lunar spectrum captured at 70,000 feet.

The 2017–2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, Thriving on Our Changing Planet, recommended Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a “Designated Targeted Observable” (DO). The SBG DO is based on the need for capabilities to acquire global, high spatial resolution, visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR; 380–2500 nm; ~30 m pixel resolution) hyperspectral (imaging spectroscopy) and multispectral midwave and thermal infrared (MWIR: 3–5 μm; TIR: 8–12 μm; ~60 m pixel resolution) measurements with sub-monthly temporal revisits over terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal marine habitats. To address the various mission design needs, an SBG Algorithms Working Group of multidisciplinary researchers has been formed to review and evaluate the algorithms applicable to the SBG DO across a wide range of Earth science disciplines, including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, atmospheric science, geology, and hydrology. Here, we summarize current state-of-the-practice VSWIR and TIR algorithms that use airborne or orbital spectral imaging observations to address the SBG DO priorities identified by the Decadal Survey: (i) terrestrial vegetation physiology, functional traits, and health; (ii) inland and coastal aquatic ecosystems physiology, functional traits, and health; (iii) snow and ice accumulation, melting, and albedo; (iv) active surface composition (eruptions, landslides, evolving landscapes, hazard risks); (v) effects of changing land use on surface energy, water, momentum, and carbon fluxes; and (vi) managing agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. We review existing algorithms in the following categories: snow/ice, aquatic environments, geology, and terrestrial vegetation, and summarize the community-state-of-practice in each category. This effort synthesizes the findings of more than 130 scientists.

We have designed a non-imaging telescope for measurement of the spectral irradiance of the moon. The telescope was designed to be integrated into a wing pod of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration ER-2 research aircraft to measure lunar spectral irradiance during flight. The telescope and support system were successfully flown in August 2018 at altitudes near 21 km and at speeds of ∼760 km/h. The wing pod in which the telescope is mounted has an opening through which the moon can be observed. The mount exposes the telescope to high winds, low pressures, temperatures near -60 °C, and vibrations both due to flight and due to the motion of the aircraft on the ground. This required a telescope design with high thermal stability and high resistance to shock. The optical design of the telescope is optimized to have high throughput and spatially uniform transmission from 380 nm to 1000 nm over a field of view about three times the angular size of the moon as viewed from the Earth. The final design resulted in a telescope with singlet design incorporating a 139.7 mm lens with an effective focal length of 377 mm and a field of view of 1.6°. The light from the telescope is introduced into an integrating sphere, which destroys the image and the polarization for measurement by a fiber-coupled spectroradiometer. Herein, we present an overview of the instrument and support system with emphasis on the telescope design.

On-orbit calibration requirements for a space-based climate observing system include long-term sensor response stability and reliable inter-calibration of multiple sensors, both contemporaneous and in succession. The difficulties with achieving these for reflected solar wavelength instruments are well known. The Moon can be considered a diffuse reflector of sunlight, and its exceptional photometric stability has enabled development of a lunar radiometric reference, manifest as a model that is queried for the specific conditions of Moon observations. The lunar irradiance model developed by the Robotic Lunar Observatory (ROLO) project has adequate precision for sensor response temporal trending, but a climate-quality lunar reference will require at least an order of magnitude improvement in absolute accuracy. To redevelop the lunar calibration reference with sub-percent uncertainty and SI traceability requires collecting new, high-accuracy Moon characterization measurements. This paper describes specifications for such measurements, along with a conceptual framework for reconstructing the lunar reference using them. Three currently active NASA-sponsored projects have objectives to acquire measurements that can support a climate-quality lunar reference: air-LUSI, dedicated lunar spectral irradiance measurements from the NASA ER-2 high altitude aircraft; ARCSTONE, dedicated lunar spectral reflectance measurements from a small satellite; and Moon viewing opportunities by CLARREO Pathfinder from the International Space Station.

This paper describes the development of a two degree of freedom (2DoF) pointing and tracking simulation used for evaluating the Air-LUSI subsystem behaviour. The Air-LUSI project intends on obtaining high altitude Lunar Spectral Irradiance (LUSI) measurements of the Moon by integrating an automated telescope mount capable of acquiring the Moon as a target and tracking it from the science pod of an ER-2 aircraft as it flies at an altitude of 65, 000 feet. By obtaining precise measurements of the Lunar Spectral Irradiance, a Lunar Calibration Model can be used for NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS). The simulations found within this report describe the estimation, filtering, and control strategies applied to the 2DoF gimbal design and compares the tracking accuracy when using system measurements or state estimates produced by the linear Kalman filter (KF) or the nonlinear unscented Kalman filter (UKF) as the input to the PID controller. An additional aspect of this project studies the nonlinear or linear system behaviour described by the interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm and analyzes the results of a hybrid adaptive control strategy that combines the KF and UKF PID gains using the IMM mode probabilities.

The biodiversity and high productivity of coastal terrestrial and aquatic habitats are the foundation for important benefits to human societies around the world. These globally distributed habitats need frequent and broad systematic assessments, but field surveys only cover a small fraction of these areas. Satellite-based sensors can repeatedly record the visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra that contain the absorption, scattering, and fluorescence signatures of functional phytoplankton groups, colored dissolved matter, and particulate matter near the surface ocean, and of biologically structured habitats (floating and emergent vegetation, benthic habitats like coral, seagrass, and algae). These measures can be incorporated into Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), including the distribution, abundance, and traits of groups of species populations, and used to evaluate habitat fragmentation. However, current and planned satellites are not designed to observe the EBVs that change rapidly with extreme tides, salinity, temperatures, storms, pollution, or physical habitat destruction over scales relevant to human activity. Making these observations requires a new generation of satellite sensors able to sample with these combined characteristics: (1) spatial resolution on the order of 30 to 100-m pixels or smaller; (2) spectral resolution on the order of 5 nm in the visible and 10 nm in the short-wave infrared spectrum (or at least two or more bands at 1,030, 1,240, 1,630, 2,125, and/or 2,260 nm) for atmospheric correction and aquatic and vegetation assessments; (3) radiometric quality with signal to noise ratios (SNR) above 800 (relative to signal levels typical of the open ocean), 14-bit digitization, absolute radiometric calibration temporal resolution of hours to days. We refer to these combined specifications as H4 imaging. Enabling H4 imaging is vital for the conservation and management of global biodiversity and ecosystem services, including food provisioning and water security. An agile satellite in a 3-d repeat low-Earth orbit could sample 30-km swath images of several hundred coastal habitats daily. Nine H4 satellites would provide weekly coverage of global coastal zones. Such satellite constellations are now feasible and are used in various applications.

There is a pressing need to globally inventory and assess coastal and inland aquatic habitats; extremely valuable and productive regions that are vulnerable to global anthropogenic pressures and climatic change. Basic information about sessile communities (wetlands, coral reefs, and sea grasses) includes mapping their extent and distribution, which can be gleaned from spectral surface reflectance imagery at high spatial resolution, but moderate temporal resolution. Moderate to high temporal resolution is also required for detailed observations of sessile community change (e.g., phenology, disturbance) and high temporal resolution is required for environmental changes in the surrounding water, phytoplankton concentration and composition, and concentrations of sediment or chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Current and upcoming satellite missions and technology could meet spatial and spectral challenges. Multiple orbiting and airborne platforms, along with a network of in situ measurements, could provide a more complete picture of how these vital resources are changing. This paper provides an overview of these resources.

Interpretation of remote sensing reflectance from coastal waters at different wavelengths of light yields valuable information about water column constituents, which in turn, gives information on a variety of processes occurring in coastal waters, such as primary production, biogeochemical cycles, sediment transport, coastal erosion, and harmful algal blooms. The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) is well suited to produce global, seasonal maps and specialized observations of coastal ecosystems and to improve our understanding of how phytoplankton communities are spatially distributed and structured, and how they function in coastal and inland waters. This paper draws from previously published studies on high-resolution, hyperspectral remote sensing of coastal and inland waters and provides an overview of how the HyspIRI mission could enable the retrieval of new aquatic biophysical products or improve the retrieval accuracy of existing satellite-derived products (e.g., inherent optical properties, phytoplankton functional types, pigment composition, chlorophyll-a concentration, etc.). The intent of this paper is to introduce the development of the HyspIRI mission to the coastal and inland remote sensing community and to provide information regarding several potential data products that were not originally part of the HyspIRI mission objectives but could be applicable to research related to coastal and inland waters. Further work toward quantitatively determining the extent and quality of these products, given the instrument and mission characteristics, is recommended.

Turpie, K.R., 2013. Explaining the spectral red-edge features of inundated marsh vegetation. In a previously published experiment, canopy reflectance spectrum was measured for three monospecific canopies as water level was artificially increased. As the water rose, spectral features appeared that could not be explained by the experimenters. To better understand their published results, a combination of a shallow-water reflectance model and a canopy reflectance model was used to simulate the spectral effects observed with increasing levels of inundation. Information from the Lee shallow water, in particular, helped explain the key spectral features observed during high water levels. However, the simulation results also suggested interesting implications regarding the nonlinear mixing of water and vegetation reflection spectra as found in marsh or other flooded canopies. Hyperspectral and sophisticated multispectral imagery are increasingly used to obtain detailed information on species composition, condition, biomass, and other characteristics of coastal marshes. However, how differing levels of tidal inundation affect the reflectance characteristics of emergent marsh vegetation remains not well documented. In 1994–1996, general reflectance spectra were collected for three common brackish marsh species with different canopy architectures (Schoenoplectus americanus, Spartina patens, and Spartina cynosuroides) in field experiments in which changing levels of tidal inundation were simulated in specially nonreflected enclosures. Reprocessing the data with software not then available has allowed greater delineation of variations in the data, especially in the red–near-infrared boundary, that previously could not be differentiated. Traditionally, satellite instruments that measure Earth-reflected solar radiation in the visible and near infrared wavelength regions have been calibrated for radiance responsivity in a two-step method. In the first step, the relative spectral response (RSR) of the instrument is determined using a nearly monochromatic light source such as a lamp-illuminated monochromator. These sources do not typically fill the field of view of the instrument nor act as calibrated sources of light. Consequently, they only provide a relative (not absolute) spectral response for the instrument. In the second step, the instrument views a calibrated source of broadband light, such as a lamp-illuminated integrating sphere. The RSR and the sphere's absolute spectral radiance are combined to determine the absolute spectral radiance responsivity (ASR) of the instrument. More recently, a full-aperture absolute calibration approach using widely tunable monochromatic lasers has been developed. Using these sources, the ASR of an instrument can be determined in a single step on a wavelength-by-wavelength basis. From these monochromatic ASRs, the responses of the instrument bands to broadband radiance sources can be calculated directly, eliminating the need for calibrated broadband light sources such as lamp-illuminated integrating spheres. In this work, the traditional broadband source-based calibration of the Suomi National Preparatory Project Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite sensor is compared with the laser-based calibration of the sensor. Finally, the impact of the new full-aperture laser-based calibration approach on the on-orbit performance of the sensor is considered.

The VIS/NIR bands polarization sensitivity of Joint Polar Satellite Sensor 1 (JPSS1) Visible/Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument was measured using a broadband source. While polarization sensitivity for bands M5-M7, I1, and I2 was less than 2.5%, the maximum polarization sensitivity for bands M1, M2, M3, and M4 was measured to be 6.4%, 4.4%, 3.1%, and 4.3%, respectively with a polarization characterization uncertainty of less than 0.3%. A detailed polarization model indicated that the large polarization sensitivity observed in the M1 to M4 bands was mainly due to the large polarization sensitivity introduced at the leading and trailing edges of the newly manufactured VISNIR bandpass focal plane filters installed in front of the VISNIR detectors. This was confirmed by polarization measurements of bands M1 and M4 bands using monochromatic light. Discussed are the activities leading up to and including the instruments two polarization tests, some discussion of the polarization model and the model results, the role of the focal plane filters, the polarization testing of the Aft-Optics-Assembly, the testing of the polarizers at Goddard and NIST and the use of NIST's T-SIRCUS for polarization testing and associated analyses and results.

The NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) has continued monitoring the SNPP VIIRS on-orbit calibration since the derivation of the calibration for Reprocessing 2014.0 of the VIIRS ocean color data set. That calibration was based on solar and lunar observations through July 2014. Updates to the R2014.0 calibration include: 1) the addition of solar and lunar observations through May 2015; 2) the extension of the lunar libration corrections to incorporate sub-solar point corrections in addition to sub-spacecraft point corrections; 3) the implementation of a shortwave infrared (SWIR) band lunar and solar calibration; and 4) the absolute calibration of the solar observations using solar diffuser measurements. The SWIR band lunar calibration shows residual libration effects. Comparison of the lunar and solar time series yields lunar-derived adjustments to the solar calibration. The solar calibration time series show RMS residuals per band of 0.066–0.17%. The lunar calibration time series show RMS residuals per band of 0.072–0.23%. The solar and lunar time series show RMS differences per band of 0.10–0.23%. The VIIRS on-orbit calibration stability is comparable to that achieved for heritage instruments (SeaWiFS, Aqua MODIS). The quality of the resulting ocean color products is sufficient for incorporation of the VIIRS data into the long-term NASA ocean color data record.

© 2015. Tidal wetlands are highly productive and act as critical habitat for a wide variety of plants, fish, shellfish, and other wildlife. These ecotones between aquatic and terrestrial environments also provide protection from storm damage, run-off filtering, and recharge of aquifers. Many wetlands along coasts have been exposed to stress-inducing alterations globally, including dredge and fill operations, hydrologic modifications, pollutants, impoundments, fragmentation by roads/ditches, and sea level rise. For wetland protection and sensible coastal development, there is a need to monitor these ecosystems at global and regional scales. Recent advances in satellite sensor design and data analysis are providing practical methods for monitoring natural and man-made changes in wetlands. However, available satellite remote sensors have been limited to mapping primarily wetland location and extent. This paper describes how the HyspIRI hyperspectral and thermal infrared sensors can be used to study and map key ecological properties, such as species composition, biomass, hydrology, and evapotranspiration of tidal salt and brackish marshes and mangroves, and perhaps other major wetland types, including freshwater marshes and wooded/shrub wetlands.

We investigated 32 net primary productivity (NPP) models by assessing skills to reproduce integrated NPP in the Arctic Ocean. The models were provided with two sources each of surface chlorophyll‐a concentration (chlorophyll), photosynthetically available radiation (PAR), sea surface temperature (SST), and mixed‐layer depth (MLD). The models were most sensitive to uncertainties in surface chlorophyll, generally performing better with in situ chlorophyll than with satellite‐derived values. They were much less sensitive to uncertainties in PAR, SST, and MLD, possibly due to relatively narrow ranges of input data and/or relatively little difference between input data sources. Regardless of type or complexity, most of the models were not able to fully reproduce the variability of in situ NPP, whereas some of them exhibited almost no bias (i.e., reproduced the mean of in situ NPP). The models performed relatively well in low‐productivity seasons as well as in sea ice‐covered/deep‐water regions. Depth‐resolved models correlated more with in situ NPP than other model types, but had a greater tendency to overestimate mean NPP whereas absorption‐based models exhibited the lowest bias associated with weaker correlation. The models performed better when a subsurface chlorophyll‐a maximum (SCM) was absent. As a group, the models overestimated mean NPP, however this was partly offset by some models underestimating NPP when a SCM was present. Our study suggests that NPP models need to be carefully tuned for the Arctic Ocean because most of the models performing relatively well were those that used Arctic‐relevant parameters., Key Points The models reproduced primary productivity better using in situ chlorophyll‐a than satellite valuesThe models performed well in low‐productivity seasons and in sea ice‐covered/deep‐water regionsNet primary productivity models need to be carefully tuned for the Arctic Ocean

Launched in late 2011, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) spacecraft is being evaluated by NASA to determine whether this sensor can continue the ocean color data record established through the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). To this end, Goddard Space Flight Center generated evaluation ocean color data products using calibration techniques and algorithms established by NASA during the SeaWiFS and MODIS missions. The calibration trending was subjected to some initial sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. Here we present an introductory assessment of how the NASA-produced time series of ocean color is influenced by uncertainty in trending instrument response over time. The results help quantify the uncertainty in measuring regional and global biospheric trends in the ocean using satellite remote sensing, which better define the roles of such records in climate research.

Summary We have used satellite colour data to classify ocean environments for monitoring interannual changes in the ocean. The unsupervised classification method is based on our observation that the frequency distributions of Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) annual pigment means and standard deviations are nonuniform and contain distinct clusters. The frequency distributions are used to objectively determine ocean areas with similar pigment statistical characteristics. A major separation between high variance, high pigment and lower variance, lower pigment waters is observed in terms of global ocean area. The ocean areas determined with our method reflect different bio-logical responses to variations in ocean physical dynamics. Pigment means and variances around the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) Time Series stations are used as fiducial characteristics. Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) station is associated with the low-variance portion of the global annual pigment distribution characteristic of the central gyres, but shows slightly higher mean and variance than the minima in the central Pacific gyre. The Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) pigment associations comprise a transitional region between the gyres and high-variance pigment areas, and circumscribe the HOT pigment associations. Together, these associations encompass 23% (HOT-like) and 48% (BATS-like) of the Northern Hemisphere open ocean. The Pacific regions delineated by the JGOFS station pigment-based patterns are similar to distributions described historically for Pacific zooplankton communities. Interannual variation for the northern hemisphere gyre area is on the order of by 10% for the 11/78–10/81 period.

Summary Empirical equations are parameterized for use with chlorophyll a, derived from satellite ocean colour data, to calculate phytoplankton carbon production, phytoplankton new production, and export production. For environments in a high variance (HV) pigment statistical class, annual phytoplankton particulate organic carbon production (AIP) is linearly related to annual average in situ chlorophyll a within the near-surface layer. Linear relations were also obtained between AIP and annual new nitrogen production, and between AIP and particulate organic carbon annually exported from the euphotic zone for environments in that class. We found no relation between AIP and CSFC, or between the annual production variables, for oceanic environments characterized by low pigment variance (LV). Ratios of export production to AIP, called e, and new production to nitrogen annually used in phytoplankton production, called f, are widely used to express marine food web processes. The trends of these ratios with AIP differ between HV and LV environments. This is a result of differences in the coupling between nitrogen and carbon transfer in pelagic food webs, which contain different organism size classes in HV compared to LV environments. We applied the empirical equations to CZCS data to estimate global new and export production. The HV environments are responsible for about 40% of global ocean annual phytoplankton carbon production and 70% of global ocean annual new and export production.

The NASA VIIRS Ocean Science Team (VOST) has developed two independent calibrations of the SNPP VIIRS moderate resolution reflective solar bands using solar diffuser and lunar observations through June 2013. Fits to the solar calibration time series show mean residuals per band of 0.078–0.10%. There are apparent residual lunar libration correlations in the lunar calibration time series that are not accounted for by the ROLO photometric model of the Moon. Fits to the lunar time series that account for residual librations show mean residuals per band of 0.071–0.17%. Comparison of the solar and lunar time series shows that the relative differences in the two calibrations are 0.12–0.31%. Relative uncertainties in the VIIRS solar and lunar calibration time series are comparable to those achieved for SeaWiFS, Aqua MODIS, and Terra MODIS. Intercomparison of the VIIRS lunar time series with those from SeaWiFS, Aqua MODIS, and Terra MODIS shows that the scatter in the VIIRS lunar observations is consistent with that observed for the heritage instruments. Based on these analyses, the VOST has derived a calibration lookup table for VIIRS ocean color data based on fits to the solar calibration time series.

The NASA VIIRS Ocean Science Team (VOST) has the task of evaluating Suomi NPP VIIRS ocean color data for the continuity of the NASA ocean color climate data records. The generation of science quality ocean color data products requires an instrument calibration that is stable over time. Since the VIIRS NIR Degradation Anomaly directly impacts the bands used for atmospheric correction of the ocean color data (Bands M6 and M7), the VOST has adapted the VIIRS on-orbit calibration approach to meet the ocean science requirements. The solar diffuser calibration time series and the solar diffuser stability monitor time series have been used to derive changes in the instrument response and diffuser reflectance over time for bands M1-M11.
