24. Polystyrene Nanoplastics Disrupt Hepatic Vitellogenin Metabolism and Impair the Reproduction Process in Female Zebrafish.

Abstract

For this study, 240 adult healthy female zebrafish were divided into 12 tanks (20 fish per tank) and exposed to 0 (control, T0), 0.1 (T1), 1 (T2), and 10 (T3) mg/L synthesized polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, nanoplastics synthesized in the chemistry laboratory of the Faculty of Basic Sciences at Zabol University) for 4 weeks. At the end of the experiment, exposure to PS-NPs had no significant effect on the survival of female zebrafish (P>0.05). A significant decrease of hepatic vitellogenin (Vtg) was seen in female zebrafish exposed to PS-NPs (P<0.05). The level of 17-β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) were notably declined in female zebrafish of all PS-NPs-exposed groups (P<0.05). Glucose was notably increased in female zebrafish of all PS-NPs-exposed treatments (P<0.05). There was a significant increase in cortisol levels in all PS-NPs-exposed treatments (P<0.05). No significant difference was seen in lactate levels between different treatments (P>0.05). A significant enhancement in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was observed in female zebrafish of all PS-NPs-exposed treatments compared to the control (P<0.05). The present results demonstrate that PS-NPs impair the reproduction process so that none of the female zebrafish broodstock exposed to different doses of PS-NPs reached the spawning stage. Abstract

In this research, an efficient, fast, low-cost and easy-to-use liquid-phase microextraction method was established to measure quercetin in onion and tomato before analysis by HPLC instrument. Herein, a rotatable central composite design-response surface methodology and artificial neural network were applied to model, optimize and predict the affecting factors on the microextraction procedure. Here, a minimal level of extractant was applied in the absence of a disperser. The cloudy state was formed by repeatedly suctioning and injecting the mixture of the aqueous solution and extractant with a glass syringe. Due to this procedure, a turbid solution composed of the very fine droplets of extractant dispersed in the aqueous solution was created, the contact surface was significantly enlarged and the quercetin was promptly extracted. The optimum values for the proposed method included 284 μL of 1-undecanol as the organic extractive solvent, pH of sample 3.3, the number of air injected nine times and speed and duration of centrifugation 4,000 rpm and 5 min. The linear range and detection of limit were achieved at 20–4,000 and 6 μg L −1 , respectively. RSD% was obtained ˂4.93% (n  = 5). Abstract

A porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF), namely Porph-UOZ-COF (UOZ stands for the University of Zabol), has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (DHPP) with 1,4-benzenediboronic acid (DBBA), under the solvothermal condition. The solid was characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The resultant multifunctional COF revealed an outstanding performance in catalyzing a one-pot tandem selective benzylic C-H photooxygenation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction in the absence of additives or metals under visible-LED-light irradiation. Notably, the catalytic activity of the COF was superior to individual organic counterparts and the COF was both stable and reusable for four consecutive runs. The present approach illustrates the potential of COFs as promising metal-free (photo) catalysts for the development of tandem reactions.
