20. Studies on analysis of minerals, phytochemicals, proximate composition, and in vitro biological activities of methanolic extracts from the fruits of Cordia dichotoma Forst and Cordia myxa L.

Abstract

Plants have been the primary source of sustenance, medicinal remedies, and refuge for humans throughout history. Wild edible fruits, in particular, have played a significant role in shaping people's diets due to their nutritional value. This research aimed to investigate the mineral content, antioxidant properties, chemical composition, and basic characteristics of selected wild edible fruits from Dera Ismail Khan, specifically Cordia myxa and Cordia dichotoma. The chosen wild edible fruits were utilized to determine their inorganic content through spectroscopy, assess their antioxidant potential using the DPPH assay, and analyze their proximate components such as crude fats via the soxhlet extraction method, proteins using the Kjeldahl technique, and ash content through muffle burning. Standard AOAC techniques were employed to ensure accurate measurements. The results of the proximate analysis revealed that C. dichotoma had a carbohydrate content of 88.35%, while C. myxa had 53.79%. Furthermore, the study found that the copper concentrations in C. myxa and C. dichotoma were 525.00 mg/kg and 477.70 mg/kg of dry weight, respectively. Notably, the highest levels of total phenols and their derivatives were detected in C. myxa (33.41 mg GAE/g) and C. dichotoma (19.59 mg GAE/g), with C. myxa exhibiting significant antioxidant activity (IC50 46.75 g/mL). Additionally, both fruits displayed a total flavonoid content of 0.463 mg QE/g. Antibacterial activity was performed by microdilution method of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) whereas, Cordia myxa (L.) showed greatest activity of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Cordia dichotma inhibited Klebsiella pneumonia effectively. Abstract

Green supplier selection has been an important technique for environmental sustainability and reducing the harm of ecosystems. In the current climate, green supply chain management (GSCM) is imperative for maintaining environmental compliance and commercial growth. To handle the change related to environmental concern and how the company manages and operates, they are integrated the GSCM into traditional supplier selection process. The main aims of this study were to outline both traditional and environmental criteria for selecting suppliers, providing a comprehensive framework to assist decision-maker in prioritizing green supplier effectively. In order to address issue to simulate decision-making problems and manage inaccurate data. A useful technique of fuzzy set was proposed to handle uncertainty in various real-life problems, but all types of data could not be handled such as incomplete and indeterminate. However, several extensions of fuzzy set were considered, such as intuitionistic fuzzy set, Pythagorean fuzzy set, q-rung orthopair fuzzy set, and q-rung orthopair fuzzy soft set considering membership and nonmember ship grade to handle the uncertainty problem. However, there was a lack of information about the neutral degree and parameterization axioms lifted by existing approaches, so to fill this gap and overcome the difficulties Ali et al. proposed a generalized structure by combining the structure of picture fuzzy set and q-rung orthopair fuzzy soft set, known as q-rung orthopair picture fuzzy soft sets, characterized by positive, neutral and negative membership degree with parameterization tools and aggregation operator to solve the multi criteria group decisionmaking problem. Additionally, the TOPSIS method is a widely utilized to assist individuals and organizations in selecting the most appropriate option from a range of choices, taking into account various criteria. Finally, we demonstrate an illustrative example related to GSCM to enhance competitiveness, based on criteria both in general and with a focus on environmental consideration, accompanied by an algorithm and flow chart. Abstract

In this study, the behavior of a microchannel flow is examined. The fluid is considered to be a nanofluid, which moves between two parallel flat plates in the presence of an electrical double layer. The Buongiorno nanofluid is considered with body force. In this study, the unphysical supposition presented in the preceding work to the discontinuity of the flow fled where the electrostatic potential in the central of the canal must be equal to zero is removed. The incorrect supposition that the pressure constant is preserved, which is considered a known form, is corrected. The current fresh model equation is modified by using dimensionless parameters to convert partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. The transformed nonlinear equations are solved by the homotopy analysis method. The physical parameters, magnetic parameters, Eckert number, Lewis number, Brownian motion parameters, thermophoresis parameters, and Prandtl number are analyzed. The influence of both the viscous and Joule dissipation in the presence of magnetohydrodynamic effect is examined.

44. A novel bioactive nano-composite : synthesis and characterisation with potential use as dental restorative material

Abstract

It is desirable for a dental restorative material to have bioactive and bonding properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of a covalently-linked polyurethane/nanohydroxyapatite (PU/nHA) composite and evaluates its chemical, physical, thermal and biochemical characteristics. nHA powder was produced from the sol-gel and novel composite material was chemically prepared by utilising solvent polymerisation. The resulting composites were analysed by chemical, thermal, and mechanical characterisations and electrospun to form fibre mats. The composites were hydrolytically degraded in deionised water and phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and were analysed. Bioactive behaviour was determined in modified-simulated body fluid. The bioadhesion with dentine was analysed in distilled water and artificial saliva. Cell growth and proliferation was measured and number of adhering bacteria was determined and serial dilution followed by plating for colony forming units per disc. Spectral analyses showed the grafted isocyanate and ether peaks on nHA indicating that urethane linkage was established. Covalent-linkage between nHA and PU were found in this novel composite with no silane agent. The physical and thermal properties were enhanced by nHA. These composites had high resistance toward hydrolysis and little degradation was observed. Bioadhesion and bioactivity analysis showed the composite adhered firmly on the tooth surface (dentine) and bond strength was similar to existing obturating material. Higher nHA content composite showed a thicker layer of adhesion. Cells were proliferated although at a lower rate of growth compared to PU, whereas, there was reduction in bacteria adhering to the grafted composite compared to PU. With its low bacterial adhesion and biocompatibility it may provide a promising solution to reduce infections. The electrospun nano-fibres were successfully developed and revealed no loose nHA particles. Hence, this novel composite has the potential to be used as a bioactive dental restorative material.

Abstract

Nowadays, thermal comfort is becoming a major problem for people due to increasing global warming and climatic changes, but it can be resolved by the concept of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. The purpose of HVAC is to provide occupants with a comfort zone so that they can feel comfortable according to their thermal comfort. The core objective of this study is to design and propose an HVAC system as per actual design conditions for the University Auditorium located in Karachi, Pakistan. A direct Expansion (DX - Type) system is installed in the Auditorium that has exceeded the lifespan of twenty years, refrigerant R-22 which is currently being used has been obsolete due to its high GWP (Global Warming Potential) and ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) values which are 1810 and 0.05 respectively. To achieve the objective of this study, two approaches are employed. Cooling Load Temperature Difference (CLTD) method & Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) software. The cooling load calculated from the CLTD method is 202 kW equivalent to 57.5 Ton of Refrigeration (TR). On the other side, the cooling load calculated from HAP software is 192.8 kW equivalent to 55 TR. By considering the calculated cooling load for the University Auditorium, two different HVAC systems are proposed, based on Water cooled and Air-cooled Vapor Compression Cycle. After this study, engineers will be able to design an HVAC system for any facility as per design conditions.
