Abstract

The intricate interplay between the oral and intestinal microbiota holds increasing fascination within the context of health and nutrition. Serving as the gateway to the gastrointestinal tract, the oral microbiota hosts a diverse array of microbial species that significantly influence well-being or contribute to various diseases. Dysbiosis in the oral microbiota has been linked to conditions such as dental caries, periodontal diseases, and systemic disorders, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and colorectal cancer. This review aims to comprehend the nuanced relationship between oral and intestinal microbiotas, exploring the pivotal role of diet in developing strategies for wellness promotion and disease prevention. Drawing insights from a myriad of studies encompassing both animals and humans, we examine the implications of microbial dysbiosis and its impact on health. A bibliographic search of 78 scientific articles was conducted across PubMed Central, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the Saudi digital library from January 2000 to August 2023. Following a rigorous screening process, the full texts of selected articles were critically reviewed to extract relevant information. Articles not meeting the inclusion criteria—specifically focused on oral–intestinal microbiota interaction and diet and nutrition—were meticulously excluded. Diet emerges as a key player in influencing both oral and intestinal microbiotas. Various dietary components, such as fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and bioactive compounds, have demonstrated significant effects on the diversity and function of microorganisms in these ecosystems. Conversely, diets high in processed foods, added sugars, and saturated fats correlate with dysbiosis and an elevated risk of oral and gastrointestinal diseases. Understanding the intricacies of this interaction is paramount for the development of innovative approaches fostering a balanced oral–gut microbiota axis and improving overall human health. The implications extend to preventive and therapeutic interventions, emphasizing the practical importance of unraveling these complexities for public health and clinical practice. This comprehensive review delves into the intricate relationship between gut and oral microbiota, shedding light on their roles in various diseases, particularly focusing on oral diseases. Key findings are summarized, and implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed. Abstract

Although many drugs have been discovered to treat malaria infection, many of them face resistance from the host's body with long-term use. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the activity of betalains (from Beta vulgaris) and chloroquine (a reference drug) against brain oxidative stress induced by Plasmodium berghei in male mice. Two protocols were applied in this study: the therapeutic and prophylactic protocols. The results of the therapeutic protocol revealed a significant decrease in the level of parasitemia caused by P. berghei. Additionally, the histopathological changes in various brain regions were markedly improved after treatment with betalains. Regarding the prophylactic protocol, betalains were able to protect the brain tissues from oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupted neurotransmitters expected to occur as a result of infection by P. berghei. This was demonstrated by modulating the activities of brain antioxidants (SOD and GSH), inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-α, and INF-γ), and neurotransmitters (serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine). This study has proven that using betalains as a treatment or as a preventive has a vital and effective role in confronting the brain histopathological, oxidative stress, and inflammatory changes induced by P. berghei infection. Abstract

This study focus upon the significant issue that how inter-organizational knowledge acquisition (IOKA) enhances the green innovation (GI) through mediating role green organizational culture (GOC) and moderating role of absorptive capacity (AC). Contextualizing manufacturing SMEs, this study empirically tested model of green innovation to entail comprehensive mechanism to analyze its imperative determinants. Survey method was employed, and data was gathered from CEOs, owners and managerial level employees of manufacturing SMEs. Hierarchical regression was applied to verify the proposed hypotheses. Study finding confirmed the positive association between interorganizational knowledge acquisition, green organizational culture, and green innovation. Findings also approved that GOC mediates the association of IOKA, and GI. Additionally, AC strengthens the relationship between IOKA, and GI. Study contributes to theory through entailing insights relating influence of IOKA, GOC and AC on GI of enterprise along with mediating role of GOC and moderating role of AC in relationship of IOKA and GI. Abstract

To identify common characteristics of landmark physiotherapy clinical trials. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) top five trials were compared to 91 physiotherapy trials published in top medical journals and 99 trials randomly selected from PEDro on the following characteristics: PEDro score, sample size, number of trial sites, use of prospective registration, positive or negative trial, citations, citations in guidelines, Altmetric score, impact factor, publications and citations of first and last author, and PEDro codes (sub-discipline, topic, problem, therapy, and body part). Trials were published from 2014 to 2019. One-way independent ANOVA and Chi–squared test evaluated between-group differences. Compared to a random sample of physiotherapy trials, the PEDro top five trials and trials in top medical journals have higher PEDro scores, larger sample sizes, more study sites, more citations (including in guidelines), higher Altmetric scores, more likely to be prospectively registered, less likely to be positive trials, and have first and last authors with more citations and publications. The problem was the only PEDro code was distributed differently across the trial groups. The PEDro top five trials and physiotherapy trials published in the top medical journals have characteristics that may inform the design, conduct, and reporting of future physiotherapy trials. Abstract

The last two decades represented the scarce discussion of the organizational social capital (SC) and its impact upon the social enterprises' sustainable performance in the developing economies like Pakistan. The main objective of this research is to analyze the impact of social capital on sustainable performance (SP) of social enterprises working in the context of developing economies. This research also tested the mediating role of the social value creation in the relationship of social capital and sustainable performance of social enterprises. Moreover, the contingent effects of social innovation (SI) were also evaluated upon the association of social capital and social enterprises' sustainable performance. Study utilized the deductive reasoning by applying the quantitative method. Data was gathered from the 171 managerial level employees of the 57 social enterprises working in Pakistan. Correlation analysis, regression analysis and Normal test theory was used as statistical test utilizing SPSS v.23. The statistical results confirmed that all the predictor constructs significantly elucidate the consequence constructs. Mediation analysis results also confirm that social value creation mediates the association of social capital and sustainable performance. Similarly, moderation analysis also confirms the moderating role of the social innovation upon the association of social capital and social enterprises' sustainable performance. This study enriches the available theory through evaluating the mediating role of social value creation and moderating role of social innovation on social capital-sustainable performance link, thus makes a significant contribution to prevailing theory contextualizing the social enterprises of developing economies by emphasizing upon the associations among social capital, social value creation, social innovation and sustainable performance.
