Abstract

The absolute differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering off the nuclei $^{12,14-17}$C have been measured in inverse kinematics at energies near 700 MeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. The projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. The radial nuclear matter density distributions and the root-mean-square nuclear matter radii were deduced from the measured cross sections using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. A possible neutron halo structure in $^{15}$C, $^{16}$C and $^{17}$C is discussed. The obtained data show evidence for a halo structure in the $^{15}$C nucleus.

Abstract

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic $p^7$Be and $p^8$B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. Abstract

The absolute differential cross section for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the proton-rich $^8$B nucleus has been measured in inverse kinematics for the first time. The experiment was performed using a secondary radioactive beam with an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI, Darmstadt. The active target, namely hydrogen-filled time projection ionization chamber IKAR, was used to measure the energy, angle and vertex point of the recoil protons. The scattering angle of the projectiles was simultaneously determined by the tracking detectors. The measured differential cross section is analyzed on the basis of the Glauber multiple scattering theory using phenomenological nuclear-density distributions with two free parameters. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a halo structure with the root-mean-square (rms) matter radius $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm and the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. The results on $^8$B are compared to those on the mirror nucleus $^8$Li investigated earlier by the same method. A comparison is also made with previous experimental results and theoretical predictions for both nuclei.

Abstract

The mean energy $W$ required to produce an ion pair in molecular hydrogen has been obtained for protons in the energy range between 1 MeV and 4.5 MeV. The W values were derived from the existing experimental data on elastic {\it $\pi^-$p} scattering at the beam energy of 40 GeV. In the experiment, the ionization chamber IKAR filled with hydrogen at a pressure of 10 at served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for recoil protons. For selected events of elastic scattering, the ionization yield produced by recoil protons was measured in IKAR, while the energy was determined kinematically through the scattering angles of the incident particles measured with a system of multi-wire proportional chambers. The ionization produced by $\alpha$-particles from $\alpha$-sources of $^{234}$U deposited on the chamber electrodes was used for absolute normalization of the W values. The energy dependence of $W$ for protons in H$_2$ shows an anomalous increase of $W$ with increasing energy in the measured energy range. At the energy of 4.76 MeV, the ionization yield for alpha particles is by 2\% larger than that for protons., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The ratios ρ pHe and ρ pn of the real to imaginary part of the forward proton-4He and proton-neutron elastic scattering amplitudes have been determined from the data on proton-helium elastic scattering cross sections at 0.7 GeV in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region to be ρ pHe =−0.06±0.06 and ρ pn = −0.28±0.12. The existing experimental values of ρ pHe are compared in a wide range of energies with the corresponding values calculated by means of the Glauber model using the ratios ρ pp and ρ pn evaluated with the help of the dispersion relations. Abstract

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic p 4He, p 6He and p 8He small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics with secondary 4,6,8He-beams at an energy near 0.7 GeV/u. The experiment was performed using beams from the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS and the fragment separator FRS of GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. Projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. For proton scattering from the neutron-rich isotopes 6He and 8He, differential elastic-scattering cross sections dσ/dt were deduced in the range 0.002 ≤ 0.05 (GeV/c)2 of the four-momentum transfer squared t. For elastic p 4He scattering, the data obtained in the t-range 0.002 ≤ 0.02 (GeV/c)2 supplement the results from an earlier work performed in direct kinematics. From the differential cross sections the integral elastic-scattering cross sections σel, the total cross sections σtot, and the total reaction cross sections σr for the proton–nucleus strong interaction were evaluated. The data obtained on dσ/dt allow the radial matter distributions in the 6He and 8He nuclei to be determined and the corresponding root-mean-square matter radii to be deduced.
