Quaternary dilute nitride compound semiconductors like Ga As y P 1 − x − y N x and Ga 1 − z In z P 1 − x N x are lattice matched with silicon when y = 4.7 * x − 0.1 and z = 2.2 * x − 0.044 and also have direct bandgaps (with N > 0.6%), thus allowing for monolithic integration of III-V optoelectronics with silicon technology as well as III-V/Si tandem junction solar cells. By applying an eight-band k.p strained (tensile or compressive) Hamiltonian and a Band Anti-crossing model (to account for small amounts of nitrogen impurities) to the conduction band, the electronic band structure and the dispersion relation of these alloys can be determined near the center of Brillouin Zone. In this work, by minimizing the total mechanical energy of the stack of alternating layers of Ga P 1 − x N x and Ga As 1 − x N x , we have evaluated the ratio of thickness of the respective layers for a strain-balanced superlattice Ga As 1 − x N x / Ga P 1 − x N x structure on silicon. We calculated the confinement energies and the corresponding states of the respective carriers inside a quantum well (with and without resonantly coupled) or in the miniband of a superlattice structure as a function of the nitrogen composition using a transfer matrix approach under the envelope function approximation. Incorporating only a small amount of nitrogen (<5%), the bandgap of these lattice matched structures fulfils the optimum bandgap requirement of (1.65–1.8) eV for III-V/Si tandem solar cells and optoelectronic devices. The optical-absorption coefficient, in both symmetric and asymmetric quantum wells, is then evaluated with respect to nitrogen composition and temperature by using the Fermi-golden rule for both TE and TM polarization of incident light, including the effect of excitons and thermal broadening. Introduction: Portal vein thrombosis in cirrhotic patients presents a significant clinical challenge. This study aims to (1) explore the impact of anticoagulation therapy on patient outcomes; (2) comparative outcomes in portal vein thrombosis treated between direct oral anticoagulant and Vitamin K Antagonist (VKA)., Materials and Methods: We leveraged the TriNetX database to analyze a cohort comprising 4224 patients with liver cirrhosis and PVT who were treated with anticoagulation, alongside a comparison group of 15,300 patients with the same conditions but not receiving anticoagulation therapy., Results: The anticoagulated group showed a significant reduction in mortality (27.9 % vs. 34.2 %, HR = 0.723, 95 % CI: 0.678-0.770, P < 0.001). When comparing direct oral anticoagulant versus. VKA, in compensated liver cirrhosis, the direct oral anticoagulant group exhibited significantly lower mortality rates compared to VKA (17.7 % vs. 26.5 %, HR = 0.655, 95 % CI: 0.452-0.951, P = 0.025), with no significant difference in liver transplantation rates (4.0 % vs. 4.7 %, P = 0.080). In decompensated liver cirrhosis, the direct oral anticoagulant group exhibited lower mortality compared to the VKA group (23.6 % vs. 30.6 %, HR = 0.732, 95 % CI: 0.629-0.851, P < 0.001), and a higher frequency of liver transplantation was observed in the VKA group (10.6 % vs. 16.0 %, HR = 0.622, 95 % CI: 0.494-0.784, P < 0.001). Hospitalization rates were significantly lower in the direct oral anticoagulant group compared to the VKA group in decompensated cirrhosis (33.4 % vs. 38.3 %, HR = 0.830, 95 % CI: 0.695-0.992, P = 1.937)., Conclusions: Our study offers compelling evidence supporting the use of anticoagulation therapy in liver cirrhosis with portal vein thrombosis. The use of flume tanks for tomato processing has been identified as a potential source of cross-contamination, which could result in foodborne illness. This study's objective was to assess the efficacy of peroxyacetic acid (PAA) at a concentration of ≤80 mg/L in preventing Salmonella enterica cross-contamination under various organic loads in a benchtop model tomato flume tank. The stability of 80 mg/L PAA at different chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels was also tested. Tomatoes were spot inoculated with a five-serovar rifampin-resistant (rif+) Salmonella cocktail (10 6 or 10 8 colony forming unit (CFU)/tomato). Inoculated (n = 3) and uninoculated (n = 9) tomatoes were introduced into the flume system containing 0-80 mg/L PAA and 0 or 300 mg/L COD. After washing for 30, 60, or 120 s, uninoculated tomatoes were sampled and analyzed for cross-contamination. All experiments were conducted in triplicate. Increasing the organic load (measured as COD) affected the stability of PAA in water with significantly faster dissociation when exposed to 300 mg/L COD. The concentration of PAA, inoculum level, COD levels, and time intervals were all significant factors that affected cross-contamination. Cross-contamination occurred at the high inoculum level (10 8  CFU/tomato) even when 80 mg/L PAA was present in the model flume tank, regardless of the organic load level. When the tomatoes were contaminated at a level of 10 6  CFU/tomato, concentrations as low as 5 mg/L of PAA were effective in preventing cross-contamination at 0 mg/L COD; however, 100 % tomatoes (9/9) were positive when the organic load increased to 300 mg/L COD. When the PAA concentration was increased to 10 mg/L, it effectively prevented cross-contamination in the tank, regardless of the presence of organic load. The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) grower training was introduced in 2016 as the standardized curriculum to meet the training requirements of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act's (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR). The PSR states that at least one supervisor or responsible party from each farm must have successfully completed this food safety training or one equivalent to the standardized curriculum, as recognized by the FDA. This study evaluated the effectiveness of PSA trainings conducted between 2017 and 2019 in the Southern United States by the Southern Regional Center for Food Safety Training, Outreach, and Technical Assistance by analyzing pre- and posttest assessments. Effectiveness was based on a 25-question knowledge assessment administered to participants before (n = 2494) and after (n = 2460) each training. The knowledge assessment indicated the overall effectiveness of the training, with average scores increasing significantly from pretest (15.9/25, 63.4%) to posttest (20.3/25, 81.3%) (P < 0.001). The greatest knowledge gains were seen in the Postharvest Handling and Sanitation, How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan, and Agricultural Water modules. Notably, these modules had lower posttest scores compared to the other modules, indicating that the amount of knowledge gained did not necessarily correspond with a sufficient understanding of the material. To ensure that participants understand all aspects of the PSR and best practices to minimize food safety risks, additional or advanced trainings may be needed. Pecan shell is considered an agricultural waste; however, it contains various bioactive compounds with potential inhibitory effect against microorganisms. This study evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of pecan shell extract (PSE) in vitro using disc-diffusion method and in vivo on blueberries as an antimicrobial coating using pullulan. For in vitro study , 5 and 10 % of aqueous (A-PSE) or ethanol pecan shell extract (E-PSE) incorporated into pullulan film were tested against different bacterial and fungal strains. Pullulan film disc was used as control. The diameter of growth inhibition (mm) around discs was measured. For in vivo study, PSE-P (5 % w/v aqueous pecan shell extract+5 % w/v pullulan), P (5 % w/v pullulan) or control (water) were spray coated on blueberries inoculated (∼5 log CFU/g) with Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica or Staphylococcus aureus ; and stored at 4 °C, 50 ± 10 % RH for 15 days. The effect of antimicrobial coating against pathogens and its impact on quality during storage were determined. A-PSE and E-PSE films were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria and showed no antifungal effect at tested concentrations when evaluated in vitro . Immediately after coating on blueberries, PSE-P significantly reduced Listeria monocytogenes by 2 log CFU/g and lowered survival until day 5 than control or P. Native aerobic microbial population was reduced ( P  < 0.05) by 0.7 log CFU/g immediately after coating. PSE-P coating or storage time had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the survival of S . enterica, S . aureus and native fungal population. PSE-P maintained the firmness of blueberry with no significant effect on its color, TSS, and pH during 15 days storage. PSE-P significantly reduced ( P  < 0.05) the spoilage rate by 21 % than control (28.5 %) and P (37 %); and minimized ( P  < 0.05) weight loss during storage. Membraneless organelles are RNA-protein assemblies which have been implicated in post-transcriptional control. Germ cells form membraneless organelles referred to as germ granules, which contain conserved proteins including Tudor domain-containing scaffold polypeptides and their partner proteins that interact with Tudor domains. Here, we show that in Drosophila, different germ granule proteins associate with the multi-domain Tudor protein using different numbers of Tudor domains. Furthermore, these proteins compete for interaction with Tudor in vitro and, surprisingly, partition to distinct and poorly overlapping clusters in germ granules in vivo. This partition results in minimization of the competition. Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) is a neurological disorder usually after rapid correction of hyponatremia. Only few cases of ODS with hypernatremia and diabetes insipidus (DI) in postpartum state is reported. Postpartum hypernatremia is described as severe hypernatremia in postpartum period and presents as an encephalopathy with rhabdomyolysis with diffuse white matter hyperintensities suggestive of osmotic demyelination., Case Presentation: The authors present a case of 29-year-old female who presented with chief complaint of altered sensorium and quadriparesis. Two days prior to onset of symptoms, she underwent caesarean section, was kept on nil per oral and free fluid restriction, after which she had confusion, altered sensorium, and weakness in all four limbs. Sodium level was 170 mEq/l. Urine osmolality and plasma osmolality was 150 and 410 mOsm/kg of water, respectively. MRI showed high signal intensity lesion in pons suggestive of demyelination. She was diagnosed ODS with transient DI and quadriparesis, in postpartum period due to further rise in sodium after free fluid restriction and nil per oral. She was treated with desmopressin, 5% dextrose and 0.9% normal saline, her quadriparesis recovered and desmopressin was tapered and stopped over 45 days and discharged at stable state., Clinical Discussion: ODS can rarely be associated with hypernatremia in postpartum female presenting as quadriparesis and altered sensorium., Conclusion: Clinicians should be familiar of ODS with hypernatremia with transient DI in postpartum period, which is reversible and can be managed by desmopressin and fluid replacement., Competing Interests: None., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Pre-harvest contamination of produce has been a major food safety focus. Insight into the behavior of enteric pathogens on produce in pre-harvest conditions will aid in developing pre-harvest and post-harvest risk management strategies. In this study, the attachment strength (SR) and die-off rate of E. coli on the surface of watermelon fruits and the efficacy of aqueous chlorine treatment against strongly attached E. coli population were investigated. Watermelon seedlings were transplanted into eighteen plots. Prior to harvesting, a cocktail of generic E. coli (ATCC 23716, 25922 and 11775) was inoculated on the surface of the watermelon fruits (n = 162) and the attachment strength (SR) values and the daily die-off rates were examined up to 6 days by attachment assay. After 120 h, watermelon samples were treated with aqueous chlorine (150 ppm free chlorine for 3 min). The SR value of the E. coli cells on watermelon surfaces significantly increased (P<0.05) from 0.04 to 0.99 in the first 24 h, which was primarily due to the decrease in loosely attached population, given that the population of strongly attached cells was constant. Thereafter, there was no significant change in SR values, up to 120 h. The daily die-off rate of E. coli ranged from -0.12 to 1.3 log CFU/cm2. The chlorine treatment reduced the E. coli level by 4.2 log CFU/cm2 (initial level 5.6 log CFU/cm2) and 0.62 log CFU/cm2 (initial level 1.8 log CFU/cm2), on the watermelons that had an attachment time of 30 min and 120 h respectively. Overall, our findings revealed that the population of E. coli on watermelon surfaces declined over time in an agricultural environment. Microbial contamination during pre-harvest stages may promote the formation of strongly attached cells on the produce surfaces, which could influence the efficacy of post-harvest washing and sanitation techniques., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Introduction: Bone turnover leading to osteoporosis and poor quality of life is common during post-menopausal period. Study of bone turnover markers that contribute to non-invasive assessment of bone-metabolic disorders holds an important area of research in low income country like Nepal. This study aimed to examine the correlates of bone turnover markers in post-menopausal women in tertiary level of health care center of Nepal., Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted during the period of November 2016 to December 2017 among 354 women. Blood samples for calcium, inorganic phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and vitamin D were collected and analyzed using a validated and calibrated tools. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 20., Results: Mean±Standard deviation of age of post-menopausal women was significantly higher compared to pre-menopausal women (post-menopausal women, (57.98±8.08) vs. pre-menopausal, (31.35±5.83), (P<0.001). Selected biochemical markers of bone-turnover such as alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly higher with year since menopause (P<0.001), whereas serum calcium, and vitamin D were decreasing with year since menopause among post-menopausal women. In addition, calcium and vitamin D were significantly negatively correlated with year since menopause (P<0.01) while body mass index, inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase were significantly positively correlated with year since menopause (P<0.01)., Conclusions: Our study revealed that body mass index, inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase positively correlated with year since menopause while calcium and vitamin D were negatively correlated suggesting for a medical supervision of hormonal changes and periodic dosing of calcium and vitamin D among post-menopausal women to reduce the problem of bone health.

Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags were designed to reduce grain storage losses on smallholder farms. The bag consists of three layers: two high-density polyethylene liners fitted inside a woven polypropylene bag. Recently, farmer groups, development relief programs, and government food security agencies have shown interest in PICS bags for large-scale use. PICS bags are conventionally closed by a twist-tie (TT) method, which involves twisting, folding, and tying the lip of each layer individually with a cord. This is not only time and labor intensive, but also may affect the integrity of the liners. We evaluated three new bag closure methods: i) inner liner rolled onto itself and middle liner fold-tied (IR), ii) both liners folded together and tied (FT), and iii) both liners folded and tied separately (FS), along with the conventional twist tie (TT) method. The time to close partially or fully filled 50 kg-capacity PICS bags filled with maize grain was assessed. Results showed that FT was the most time-saving method, reducing bag sealing time by >34% versus the usual TT method. The average internal oxygen levels reached <2% within a week in bags containing grain highly infested with Sitophilus zeamais , while it remained >5% levels for less-infested bags. In both cases, insect population growth was suppressed. Oxygen depletion rates among tying methods remained the same regardless of the closure method used. When large numbers of bags need to be closed, the time-saving FT method is a good alternative PICS sealing method over the conventional twist-tie approach.

Background: Displaced Colles' fractures are treated by manipulation and below elbow cast application. Malunion is a common complication, resulting in pain, mid-carpal instability, and post-traumatic arthritis. Fracture stabilization by percutaneous pinning is a simple, minimally invasive technique that helps prevent displacement of the fracture, thereby minimizing complications. This study aims to assess the amount of collapse after closed manipulation and percutaneous pinning with Kirschner wires (K-wires) and its correlation with the functional outcome of the wrist after union., Methods: A prospective study was conducted from May 2015 to May 2016 in a tertiary orthopedic center. Ninety patients (60 females, 30 males) with an average age of 54.93 years with Type II fractures underwent closed manipulation and percutaneous pinning with crossed K-wires as the primary procedure. Serial radiographs were taken to document the amount of collapse. The functional outcome was assessed using the Cooney Wrist Score., Results: At the final follow-up at six months, the collapse in the mean dorsal angle was 0.94 and mean ulnar variance was 0.51. Functionally, 48 patients (53.33%) had an excellent outcome, 36 patients (40%) had a good outcome, and six patients (6.67%) had a fair outcome., Conclusions: Displaced Colles' fractures should be reduced and stabilized with percutaneous K-wires to achieve an excellent functional outcome., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Purpose: Fractures of the medial humeral epicondyle represent approximately 10% of all pediatric elbow fractures. Surgically treated pediatric fractures of the medial humeral epicondyle were analyzed retrospectively for their epidemiological, clinical, radiological and surgical parameters. The evaluation includes the Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS)., Methods: Twenty-five surgically treated fractures of the medial humeral epicondyle were analyzed. A valgus stress test was performed under general anesthesia or sedation. All patients underwent open reduction internal fixation using a similar technique. The medial epicondylar fragment was anatomically reduced and fixed in all cases with screws and Kirschner wires. At final evaluation, union was assessed radiologically, and elbow function was assessed by MEPS., Results: An evaluation of all our patients after a mean follow-up of 8.75 months (SD=4.76) after initial surgery was possible. The mean age of patients at the time of injury was 10.8 years (SD=2.3). Fifteen (60%) dominant elbows were injured in our study and twelve (48%) elbows had an associated elbow dislocation. On examination in the operating room post anesthesia, all the elbow injuries revealed some degree of valgus instability. All our patients (n=25) showed good to excellent results in MEPS. Radiographically, union was achieved in all cases. Three patients developed postoperative ulnar nerve neuropraxia; all recovered at time of final follow-up., Conclusion: Our results suggest that open reduction internal fixation of displaced medial epicondyle fractures leads to satisfactory motion and function. Background: Tennis elbow is a common disorder of the upper extremity. It can be treated conservatively in the majority of patients, but some resistant cases eventually can be treated by percutaneous release with good functional outcome., Materials and Methods: This non-randomized control trial was conducted at the Department of Orthopaedics Surgery in a tertiary care hospital from July 2015 to June 2016 on 50 patients who underwent percutaneous release of the common extensor origin using an 18 gauge hypodermic needle. These patients did not respond to conservative treatment including rest, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and local steroid injections. The outcome was graded as Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor., Results: Fifty patients (50 elbows) were included in the study. Thirty-two patients were female (64%), and 18 were male (36%). The right side was affected in 37 patients (74%) and left side in 13 (26%). The time taken to achieve a completely pain-free elbow ranged from one day to two months (average of 26.2 days). Those who did not achieve a pain-free elbow had a residual pain of 1.5 to six on the visual analogue scale (VAS) (average 2.32). Excellent outcome was noticed in 24 patients (48%); Good result in eight patients (36% ); Fair in four patients (eight percent) and Poor in four patients (eight percent)., Conclusion: Tennis elbow probably results from the degenerative tear of the common extensor origin, and a percutaneous tenotomy using an 18 gauge hypodermic needle is a simple, safe, patient-friendly, efficient, and easily reproducible method of treating tennis elbow in those who are resistant to conservative treatment, and it can be done as an outpatient procedure., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Postharvest insect pests threaten the nutritional and financial security of smallholder farmers in the developing world. Hermetic storage, a technology that protects grain against insects by blocking their supply of oxygen, alleviates the problem of insect-caused losses. PICS (Purdue Improved Crop Storage) bags represent one hermetic technology that improves food availability and incomes of farmers. The polyethylene liners of PICS bags are sometime damaged during use, acquiring small holes or tears. Observations in the laboratory and field suggest that insect development remains localized around the point where the bag is damaged. We hypothesized that the grain within a hermetic container that has minimal localized damage (such as an insect hole), helps retard leakage of oxygen into the bag and contributes to limiting insect damage and to the overall protective effect. To test this hypothesis, we filled 4 cm dia. by 10 cm long PVC pipes with Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) infested cowpeas and sealed them with caps having a single, insect-sized hole in its center. A vertical tube positioned above the cowpea-filled PVC pipe was filled with one of three different grains (sesame, sorghum, and maize) to different depths (0, 5, 15, 30, 50 cm). Seed size and grain barrier depth significantly reduced the level of bruchid damage to the stored cowpea in the PVC container. Smaller sized grains used for the barriers retarded insect development more effectively than larger sized grains, while deeper grain depth was more effective than shallower barriers. The grain held in a hermetic container contributes in a small, but significant, way to the effectiveness of the containers.

Aerosol insecticides are being used in flour mill pest management programs, but there is limited information on their efficacy on different insect life stages. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of synergized pyrethrin applied as an aerosol against eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val. Effects of direct and indirect exposure were evaluated by exposing each life stage to the aerosol and then transferring to untreated flour, transferring untreated insects to treated flour, or exposing both the insects and the flour to the aerosol. The aerosol produced >88% mortality of both species and all life stages when insects were directly treated and transferred to either treated or untreated flour. Mortality was significantly reduced when insects were either treated together with flour or untreated insects were transferred to treated flour (indirect exposure to the aerosol). Larvae and adults of both species were more tolerant compared with eggs and pupae. Recovery of moribund adults in the indirect exposure treatments was greater compared with recovery of moribund insects in the direct exposure treatments. Good sanitation before aerosol application could facilitate direct exposure of insects and thus increase aerosol efficacy inside flour mills.
