Objective: In this study the authors aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of sex-cord stromal tumors (SCST). Materials and Methods: The medical and pathological records of patients with SCST who were operated and followed up in a tertiary university clinic between March 1991 and October 2013 were reviewed. Clinical, surgical and pathological characteristics, follow-up data of the patients, and the effect of this parameters on survival were investigated. Results: One hundred and three women with a mean age of 45±12.8 (range 16-78) were included. Histopathological diagnosis was found as granulosa cell tumor in 95 (92.2%), Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) in six (5.8%), Leydig cell tumor (LCT) in one, and Sertoli cell tumor (SCT) in one of the cases. Sixty-eight percent of the patients had Stage I, 8.7% Stage II, 15.5% Stage III, and 6.8% had Stage IV disease. On univariate analysis; stage, age greater than 50 years, suboptimal cytoreduction, bilaterality, and non-BEP chemotherapy were determined as poor prognostic indicators. On multivariate analysis, age, stage, and optimal cytoreduction were found to be independent prognostic factors for overall survival, while only optimal cytoreduction was detected as an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival (DFS). Fertility-sparing surgical procedures (FSS) were performed in 22 patients (21.4%). Among these 22 cases 16 (72.7%) pregnancies (13 resulted in a live birth and three in abortion) were achieved through a median period of 72 months (24-240). Conclusion: It was concluded that the most effective parameters on survival were stage and optimal cytoreduction. FSS is an effective approach for preserving the reproductive functions of young patients with SCST.

PubMedID: 27094100 Aim: Imperforate hymen is the most common obstructive anomaly of the female genital tract. Conventional surgical treatment for this condition is the cruciate incision made on the hymen. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel technique that preserves virginity after hymenotomy using electrocautery. Methods: Patients diagnosed with imperforate hymen and treated with annular hymenotomy between 2009 and 2013 were included in this retrospective cohort study. Annular incision was done using electrocautery on the hymen whilst sparing the intact hymenal tissue circumferentially at least 5 mm from the base. Results: Fifteen patients were included in the study. Mean age of patients was 14.2 ± 2.2 years. The median operation time was 5 min (3–9 min). No complications occurred. During the follow-up examinations, none of the patients had hymenal closure and all had regular menstrual bleeding. Conclusion: This novel technique showed complete success without any observed complication. This technique might be a good alternative for patients seeking to preserve virginity after surgery. © 2016 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology

In this study, an analysis of Stage IB2-IIA (bulky) cervical cancer was performed. The efficacy of primary radical surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by a radical surgery was investigated. Materials and Methods: Medical data of 50 patients who were diagnosed with Stage IB2-IIA (bulky) cervical cancer and treated between 2002-2009 were retrospectively assessed. In the radical surgery group, radical hysterectomy + bilateral pelvic + para-aortic lymphadenectomy were performed. In the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group, a combination of cisplatin/topotecan or paclitaxel/carboplatin was given to the patients and then radical surgery was performed. Each group was evaluated individually. Prognostic factors were determined and survival rates were compared between the groups. Ap value was taken

Hyperemesis gravidarum, is the most severe form of pregnancy induced nausea-vomiting. More than 5% weight loss, electrolyte imbalance, acetonuria and oliguria can be seen in the patients. Up to date, infrequent complications like Wernicke encephalopathy, eyeball subluxation, esophageal ruptures and pneumothorax have been reported. Although the frequency of the temporomandibular joint disorders does not change during pregnancy, in the presented case, a temporomandibular dislocation has been developed due to hyperemesis gravidarum. The disorder, known as displacement of the mandibular condyle outside the glenoid fossa, mainly occurs during movements which force the joint for hyperextension. Objective: Objective: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction applied with gonadotrophins. In this study, we aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of OHSS for cases taken into IVF- ICSI/ET cycle and subjected to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in our clinic. Material and Methods: IVF-ICSI/ET cycles subjected to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Center of Qukurova University were evaluated. Patients developing OHSS and patients not developing OHSS were set as two different groups. Patients' files were reviewed and their demographic features, examination data, laboratory findings, ultrasonography (USG) characteristics and treatment protocols were compared. Results: Number of cycles for the groups developing OHSS and not developing OHSS were 69 and 1373 respectively. Incidences of moderate and intense OHSS were determined to be 4% and 0.2% respectively. OHSS was more frequent in patients having high basal LH values, LH/FSH ratios and hCG day estradiol (E2) values. HCG day mature follicle numbers, aspired preovulatory follicle numbers, aspired small follicle numbers and collected oocyte numbers were higher in the OHSS developing group (p=0.0001). Risk of OHSS in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was 7.6 times higher (95% CI 4.3-13.5) than the others. The comparison made between the antagonist protocol and long luteal agonist protocol showed that there was no statistically significant dif-ference between the two groups in terms of OHSS development (p=0.069). Conclusion: Multivariate analysis revealed that, pregnancy, >3000 pg/ml E2 values, >2 LH/FSH ratio and presence of PCOS were found to be an independent risk factors for OHSS. Treatment of the high risk cases should be individual. During the treatment process of these patients, follicular development should be closely monitored using ultra-sonography and E2 follow-up. PubMedID: 23445130 Teratoma of the fallopian tube (cystic or solid) is a rarely encountered tumour and, to date, only 73 cases have been reported in the literature. A comprehensive review has not been done since 1972, when Mazzarella and colleagues reviewed 44 cases of tubal teratomas. This situation has prompted us to survey the literature to update the data on tubal teratoma cases. The majority of the tumours were benign. The tumour was cystic in nature in 50 cases. Patients' ages ranged between 17 and 67 years. None of them was diagnosed preoperatively. Half of the tumours were ? 5 cm, whereas the other half were > 5 cm in diameter. About two-thirds of the patients were associated with two or fewer gravidity. To the best of our knowledge, the present case included in our paper is the first tubal cystic teratoma reported from Turkey. © 2013 Informa UK, Ltd.

PubMedID: 23006021 We investigated the epidemiological characteristics of both symptomatic and asymptomatic dermatophytic groin infections in 1970 women (age: 36.2±12.5) during routine gynaecologic examinations. Bilateral groin samples were collected with sterile cotton swabs premoistened with sterile physiological saline. The samples were then separately inoculated onto Sabouraud glucose agar. Fungi were identified by sequencing the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region. Dermatophytes were recovered from five patients (four Trichophyton rubrum and one Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii, 0.25%) with a diagnosis of asymptomatic carriers (four) and tinea inguinalis (one). In one case, groin carriage converted into tinea inguinalis after 3weeks. Analysis of risk factors indicated that patients of at least 49years were more likely to be positive for dermatophyte isolation (P=0.002). In conclusion, groin dermatophyte carriage is more common than tinea inguinalis and can potentially convert into a symptomatic infection. © 2012 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.

There are a number of studies arguing for and against the use of Online learning resources for learning facilitation. Some studies attribute the rise of learners’ achievement to the use of technology; others believe that technology has changed the learners’ attitudes towards learning. Scholars have used learners’ attitudes and achievement as indicators of the success or the failure of technology. The majority of extant related research is carried out at University, College and further education levels but limited studies have examined KS3 learners in the UK. In particular, there are not a lot of studies that focus on measuring the learning effectiveness through KS3 learners’ attitude and achievement at the same time. \ud \ud The present study uses both attitudes and achievement and the link between them as a predictor of the BBC Bitesize online learning resource effectiveness. This case study aims to examine the use of BBC Bitesize and identify its effectiveness for learning Science in Year 9 in two Schools in Manchester, UK. Subsequently, the present study investigates these 3 themes:\ud a. The effect of Computers & BBC Bitesize on KS3 learners’ attitudes.\ud b. The impact of Computers & BBC Bitesize on KS3 learners’ achievement and learning effectiveness.\ud c. The correlation between the learners’ attitudes towards BBC Bitesize and their achievement.\ud This study is a mixed methods study that combines both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative research method is reflected through the use of 121 attitudinal questionnaires. The qualitative research method in this study is represented by 11 semi-structured interviews The study traces the learners’ achievement by using a written test after they have been given a Science course via BBC Bitesize.\ud Attitudes have been approached in a way that defines an attitude as the combination of a number of factors: affective component, perceived-usefulness, perceived-control, behavioural component, anxiety component and self-efficacy component. These components have been the base of the study questionnaire based on Selwyn’s (1997) model.\ud \ud The contribution to knowledge is in the area of debate on whether Online learning can improve learner’s achievement. In particular, the current study makes the following contributions to knowledge for KS3 -related Online learning using BBC Bitesize: \ud \ud a. Development of a new scale for measuring learners’ attitude using socio-psychological factors and identifying that two of these – control and anxiety- are not significant; \ud \ud b. The attitude and achievement constructs are studied together using partial correlation analysis and Spearman correlation, and a positive link is found suggesting that positive attitude has a positive impact on achievement; \ud \ud c. The components of attitudes are confirmed as: affective, usefulness, behavioural and self-efficacy. This amends the original four components from Selwyn. \ud \ud The current study has a practical contribution in that it confirms that BBC Bitesize has positively affected the learners’ achievement and attitudes. BBC Bitesize is found to be effective for facilitating learning of Science by KS3 learners.
