Abstract

The covalent interaction between the [O.sup.2-] anion and the d orbitals of the transition metal cation is at the heart of the remarkable electronic properties of the transition metal oxides [...], We present the synthesis and structural characterization of a transition metal oxide hydride, LaSrCo[O.sub.3][H.sub.0.7], which adopts an unprecedented structure in which oxide chains are bridged by hydride anions to form a two-dimensional extended network. The metal centers are strongly coupled by their bonding with both oxide and hydride ligands to produce magnetic ordering at temperatures up to at least 350 kelvin. The synthetic route is sufficiently general to allow the prediction of a new class of transition metal-containing electronic and magnetic materials.

Abstract

There have been developments in the preparation of ordered metal and semiconductor nanocrystal ensembles over the past few years, such as the crystallization of monodisperse fractions of thiol-stabilized nanoparticles into two and three dimensional superlattices. Three types of organization were observed in alkanethiol-derivatized gold nanocrystals, size-segregated areas, structures where different sized particles are located in random positions in a pseudohexagonal lattice and intimately mixed different sized particles.

Abstract

Hard elastic thin films of pure carbon can be manufactured using nanotechnology. The process involves the high velocity deposition of closed, hollow graphitic carbon nanoparticles such as nanotubes and carbon onions onto a substrate. The process causes sp3-like bonds to bind together the sp2-bonded graphitic planes. During the bonding process, a substantial electron-energy-loss occurs in the sp2 bonding located in the intersecting regions of the nanoparticles.

Abstract

A detailed study of the selective oxidation of cyclohexane has been performed using bimetallic gold–palladium catalysts supported on magnesium oxide. Mono-metallic supported gold or palladium catalysts show limited activity for cyclohexane oxidation. However, a significantly enhanced catalytic performance is observed when supported gold–palladium alloy catalysts are used for this particular reaction. This synergy is observed for alloys spanning a wide range of gold-to-palladium molar ratios. Mechanistic studies reveal a promotion effect that occurs from alloying palladium with gold on the supported catalyst, which significantly improves the homo-cleavage of the O–O bond in cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, an important intermediate species in cyclohexane oxidation.

20. Molybdenum blue nano-rings: an effective catalyst for the partial oxidation of cyclohexane

Abstract

Molybdenum blue (MB), a multivalent molybdenum oxide with a nano-ring morphology is well-known in analytical chemistry but, to date it has been largely ignored in other applications. In the present work, MB has been characterized by STEM-HAADF imaging for the first time, showing the nano-ring morphology of this complex molybdenum oxide and the ordered super-molecular framework crystals that can result from the self-assembly of these MB nano-ring units. The potential of MB as an oxidation catalyst has also been investigated, where it is shown to have excellent catalytic activity and stability in the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone which are important intermediates in the production of nylon.

Abstract

Laser-arc evaporation of a graphite target has been used to deposit carbon films that exhibit high hardness (45 GPa) and elastic recovery (85%). High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) were subsequently used to study the microstructure and bonding of the resultant layers. The structure of the films from HREM is seen to consist of a dense array of parallel curved graphene sheetsegments packed in various orientations. EELS reveals that the films are comprised of mainly sp2 -bonded carbon. The results suggest that a form of carbon thin film with fullerenelike structure can be realized. In orderto explain how a predominantly sp2 -bonded material can exhibit such a highhardness, a simple model is proposed to correlate the excellent mechanical properties with the observed structure.

Abstract

Hydrogen-free amorphous carbon films with hardness comparable to crystalline superhard materials have been deposited by special pulsed arc techniques. With the combination of very high hardness, hig smoothness, and low adhesion activity to other materials which are in contact with them, these films show superior behavior in wear and slide applications. The influence of plasma and deposition conditions on these film properties and the choice of optimum conditions are discussed.

Abstract

A new method for the synthesis of monolayer-protected silver clusters (MPCs) based on the two-phase reduction of a stable negatively charged silver bromide sol is described. Phase transfer of the colloid to toluene is accomplished using tetra-n-octylammonium bromide as the phase transfer reagent. The advantage of this synthesis is to uncouple the formation of the silver halide colloid from its transfer and reduction in the organic phase, thus allowing control over each reaction step. The silver colloid in toluene was reduced with aqueous borohydride in the presence of 4-bromobenzenethiol as the passivating agent. The UV-visible absorption spectra indicate the intermediate formation of Ag coreAgBr shell clusters during reduction. The resulting MPCs have been characterized by optical and transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The formation of spiral cracks in the nanoparticulate agglomerates on solvent evaporation was observed. The spectra of thin films obtained by solvent evaporation have been analyzed using an effective medium theory.
