1. Estimation of radiative half-life of $^{229m}$Th by half-life measurement of other nuclear excited states in $^{229}$Th

Abstract

We perform coincidence measurements between $\alpha$ particles and $\gamma$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to be $5.0(11)\times10^{3}$ s, which is one of the key parameters for the frequency standard based on $^{229}$Th., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures. 3 tables

Abstract

The low-lying isomeric state of $^{229}$Th provides unique opportunities for high-resolution laser spectroscopy of the atomic nucleus. We determine the energy of this isomeric state by taking the absolute energy difference between the excitation energy required to populate the 29.2-keV state from the ground-state and the energy emitted in its decay to the isomeric excited state. A transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter was used to measure the absolute energy of the 29.2-keV $\gamma$-ray. Together with the cross-band transition energy (29.2 keV$\to$ground) and the branching ratio of the 29.2-keV state measured in a recent study, the isomer energy was determined to be 8.30$\pm$0.92 eV. Our result is in agreement with latest measurements based on different experimental techniques, which further confirms that the isomeric state of $^{229}$Th is in the laser-accessible vacuum ultraviolet range., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The nuclide 266Bh was produced in the 248Cm(23Na,5n)266Bh reaction at beam energies of 125.9, 130.6, and 135.3 MeV. Decay properties of 266Bh were investigated with a rotating wheel apparatus for α and spontaneous fission (SF) spectrometry under low background conditions attained by a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator. Based on genetically correlated α−α and α-SF decay chains, a total of 23 chains were assigned to 266Bh and its daughter nuclide 262Db and granddaughter 258Lr. The half-life of 266Bh was measured to be T1/2=10.0+2.6−1.7s which is an order of magnitude longer than the literature data. The α-particle energies of 266Bh disperse widely in the range of Eα=8.62–9.40MeV. The maximum production cross section for the 248Cm(23Na,5n)266Bh reaction was determined to be σ=57±14 pb at 130.6 MeV, whereas the upper limit for the 248Cm(23Na,4n)267Bh reaction was σ≤14 pb at 121.2 MeV. These cross sections are discussed by comparing with the literature data as well as the theoretical calculations.

Abstract

The yields of ^7Be and ^Be produced by bremsstrahlung having a maximum energy (E_0) of 200 MeV in ^Cu, ^Ag and ^Au targets were investigated by the AMS technique at MALT of the University of Tokyo. It was found that the yields at E_0 = 200 MeV were much lower than those at E_0 ≧250 MeV, obtained in our previous work. A change in the yields of the fragmentation component in the target-mass dependence was observed at E_0=200 MeV when compared with those at E_0≧250 MeV. However, the ratios of the fragmentation yield of ^Be to that of ^7Be remained unchanged throughout the concerned E_0.

Abstract

The decay of low energy isomeric state of ^Th was explored applying a novel radiochemical technique to the (γ, xn) reaction products on ^Th target. The decaying α-emitter was observed between 4.687 MeV α-peak of ^Th and the α-peaks of the (γ, 2n) product ^Th. The energy of the decaying component is consistent with the expected energy for the α-particles from ^Th. The half-life of the decaying component was determined to be 13.9±3 hours. It seems that the present determination of the half-life is the longest value for ^Th, because fluoride has no valence electrons that undergo electronic bridge interaction with the thorium nucleus.

Abstract

To search for a direct-decay signal from the isomer 229Thm, α-particle spectra of 229Thm, g produced from 93 mg of 233U have been measured by using a rapid and high-resolution α-particle spectrometry, which can distinguish α lines of 229Thm from those of its ground state. Although α events were not obtained in the expected energy region for 229Thm with the exception of those derived from 229Thg, we can estimate that the half-life of 229Thm is shorter than 2 h at 3σ confidence level under the chemical condition of chloride or hydroxide.
