1. Investigation of suppression of $\Upsilon(nS)$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies

Abstract

The primary purpose of studying quarkonium production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is to understand the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. At various collision systems, measurements of quarkonium states of different binding energies, such as $\Upsilon(nS)$, can provide comprehensive information. A model study has been performed to investigate the modification of $\Upsilon(nS)$ production in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$ 5.02 TeV and Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$ 200 GeV. The Monte-Carlo simulation study is performed with a publicly available hydrodynamic simulation package for the quark-gluon plasma medium and a theoretical calculation of temperature-dependent thermal width of $\Upsilon(nS)$ considering the gluo-dissociation and inelastic parton scattering for dissociation inside the medium. In addition, we perform a systematic study with different descriptions of initial collision geometry and formation time of $\Upsilon(nS)$ to investigate their impacts on yield modification. The model calculation with a varied parameter set can describe the experimental data of $\Upsilon(nS)$ in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV and $\Upsilon(2S)$ in Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV but underestimates the modification of $\Upsilon(1S)$ at the lower collision energy. 2. Item Equivalence Verification According to Test Information Media of the Optician National Licensing Examination: Focused on the Smart Device Based and Paper Based Tests Including Multimedia Items

Abstract

This study conducts the validity of the pen-and-paper and smart-device-based tests on optician's examination. The developed questions for each media were based on the national optician's simulation test. The subjects of this study were 60 students enrolled in E University. The data analysis was performed to verify the equivalence of the two evaluation methods, specifically, through split-plot factorial design of the evaluation method as a partition variable. As a result of the statistical significance test for the difference in achievement for each type of test information medium, indicating that there was no difference in achievement according to the type of test information medium at the significance level of 0.05. Although the validity of the smart device-based test and the paper-and-pencil test was verified through this study. To develop and set multimedia items in the optician national licensing examination, it is necessary to establish guidelines for how to develop the items.

4. Model study on $\Upsilon(nS)$ modification in small collision systems

Abstract

Quarkonium production has been studied extensively in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments to understand the properties of the quark gluon plasma. The experimental results on the yield modification in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in $p$+$p$ collisions can be described by several models considering dissociation and regeneration effects. A yield modification beyond initial-state effects has also been observed in small collision systems such as $p$+Au and $p$+Pb collisions, but it is still premature to claim any hot medium effect. A model study in various small collision systems such as $p$+$p$, $p$+Pb, $p$+O, and O+O collisions will help quantitatively understanding nuclear effects on the $\Upsilon(nS)$ production. A theoretical calculation considering the gluo-dissociation and inelastic parton scattering and their inverse reaction reasonably describes the suppression of $\Upsilon(1S)$ in Pb+Pb collisions. Based on this calculation, a Monte-Carlo simulation is developed to more realistically incorporate the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions with event-by-event initial collision geometry and hydrodynamic evolution. We extend this framework to small systems to study the medium effects. In this work, we quantify the nuclear modification factor of $\Upsilon(nS)$ as a function of charged particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/d\eta$) and transverse momentum. 5. Simulation of angular resolution of a new electromagnetic sampling calorimeter

Abstract

We report on the simulation results for the angular resolution of an electromagnetic (EM) sampling calorimeter with photons in the range of 100~MeV to 2~GeV. The simulation model of the EM calorimeter consists of alternating layers of a 1-mm-thick lead plate and a 5-mm-thick plastic scintillator plate. The scintillator plates are alternately segmented into horizontal and vertical strips. In this study, we obtain energy deposits in individual strips using Geant4 simulations and reconstruct the incident photon angles using XGBoost with gradient-boosted decision trees. The performance of the angle reconstruction depends on the detector configuration and the accuracy of machine learning. The angular resolution is well described by the expression $0.24^{\circ} \oplus 1.25^{\circ}/\sqrt{E_{\gamma}}$, where $E_{\gamma}$ is the incident photon energy in GeV, for strips of 15 mm and 32 layers. This energy dependence is consistent for different incident angles in the range of 10$^{\circ}$ to 40$^{\circ}$.

13. Exploring the string shoving model in PYTHIA8 for collective behaviors in $pp$ collisions

Abstract

Two-particle correlations have been used to study property of a produced medium called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and a long-range correlation among produced particles has been considered as a strong evidence of strongly interacting QGP. Strikingly, clear long-range correlations have been also observed in small collision systems like $pp$ and $p$+$A$ at a wide range of collision energies. A model introducing a repulsive force between flux tubes called string shoving can qualitatively describe the long-range near-side correlations in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions. This model implemented in the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator allows us to perform detailed study. In this work, a full data analysis to calculate associated yields and flow coefficients is performed with PYTHIA events, and the results are compared with experimental results. We find that the string shoving model overestimates long-range near-side correlations particularly in low multiplicity events. We also introduce a method to subtract such overestimated correlations in low multiplicity to have a more relevant comparison with the data., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

20. Role of Morphological Awareness and Morphological Processing in Korean Secondary School Students' English-Vocabulary Knowledge and Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Despite the recognized importance of morphological knowledge to literacy outcomes such as vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, two of its subconstructs--morphological awareness and morphological processing--have received comparatively little attention. In response, the aim of the study reported here was to examine how the relationships between morphological awareness and morphological processing, especially in terms of morphological transparency and morphological frequency, contribute to the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension of 62 native Korean-speaking secondary school students--27 eighth-graders and 35 tenth-graders--learning English as a foreign language. The students' performance on the Test of Morphological Structure and the Word Reading Test was assessed to gauge their compounding awareness, inflectional awareness, vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension. The results indicated that the students' performance was varied depending on morphological transparency and frequency. In addition, it was not morphological processing, but rather morphological awareness that explained variances in vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, when compounding awareness and inflectional awareness were controlled for. This paper discusses what such findings imply for teaching English as a foreign language to Korean learners.

Abstract

Polymorphisms in TMEM106B, a gene on chromosome 7p21.3 involved in lysosomal trafficking, correlates to worse neuropathological, and clinical outcomes in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with TDP-43 inclusions. In a small cohort of C9orf72 expansion carriers, we previously found an atypical, neuroglial tauopathy in cases harboring a TMEM106B rs1990622 A/A genotype. To test whether TMEM106B genotype affects the risk of developing atypical tauopathy under a recessive genotype model (presence versus absence of two major alleles: A/A vs. A/G and G/G). We characterized the atypical tauopathy neuropathologically and determined its frequency by TMEM106B rs1990622 genotypes in 90 postmortem cases with a primary diagnosis of FTLD/ALS-TDP [mean age at death 65.5 years (±8.1), 40% female]. We investigated the effect of this new atypical tauopathy on demographics and clinical and neuropsychological metrics. We also genotyped TMEM106B in an independent series with phenotypically similar cases. Sixteen cases (16/90, 17.7 %) showed the temporal-predominant neuro-astroglial tauopathy, and 93.7% of them carried an A/A genotype (vs. ~35% in a population cohort). The odds ratio of FTLD/ALS-TDP individuals with the A/A genotype showing neuro-astroglial tauopathy was 13.9. Individuals with this tauopathy were older at onset (p = 0.01). The validation cohort had a similarly high proportion of rs1990622 A/A genotype. TDP-43 and tau changes co-occur in a subset of neurons. Our data add to the growing body of evidence that TMEM106B polymorphisms may modulate neurodegeneration. A distinctive medial temporal predominant, 4-repeat, neuro-astroglial tauopathy strongly correlates to TMEM106B A/A genotype in FTLD/ALS-TDP cases.

Abstract

Each neurodegenerative syndrome reflects a stereotyped pattern of cellular, regional, and large-scale brain network degeneration. In behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), a disorder of social-emotional function, von Economo neurons (VENs), and fork cells are among the initial neuronal targets. These large layer 5 projection neurons are concentrated in the anterior cingulate and frontoinsular (FI) cortices, regions that anchor the salience network, a large-scale system linked to social-emotional function. Here, we studied patients with bvFTD, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or both, given that these syndromes share common pathobiological and genetic factors. Our goal was to determine how neuron type-specific TAR DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) pathobiology relates to atrophy in specific brain structures and to loss of emotional empathy, a cardinal feature of bvFTD. We combined questionnaire-based empathy assessments, in vivo structural MR imaging, and quantitative histopathological data from 16 patients across the bvFTD/ALS spectrum. We show that TDP-43 pathobiology within right FI VENs and fork cells is associated with salience network atrophy spanning insular, medial frontal, and thalamic regions. Gray matter degeneration within these structures mediated loss of emotional empathy, suggesting a chain of influence linking the cellular, regional/network, and behavioral levels in producing signature bvFTD clinical features.

Abstract

Common neurodegenerative diseases feature progressive accumulation of disease-specific protein aggregates in selectively vulnerable brain regions. Increasing experimental evidence suggests that misfolded disease proteins exhibit prion-like properties, including the ability to seed corruptive templating and self-propagation along axons. Direct evidence for transneuronal spread in patients, however, remains limited. To test predictions made by the transneuronal spread hypothesis in human tissues, we asked whether tau deposition within axons of the corticospinal and corticopontine pathways can be predicted based on clinical syndromes and cortical atrophy patterns seen in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Sixteen patients with Pick's disease, 21 with corticobasal degeneration, and 3 with FTLD-MAPT were included, spanning a range of clinical syndromes across the frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum. Cortical involvement was measured using a neurodegeneration score, a tau score, and a composite score based on semiquantitative ratings and complemented by an MRI-based cortical atrophy W-map based on antemortem imaging. Midbrain cerebral peduncle and pontine base descending fibers were divided into three subregions, representing prefrontopontine, corticospinal, and parieto-temporo-occipital fiber pathways. Tau area fraction was calculated in each subregion and related to clinical syndrome and cortical measures. Within each clinical syndrome, there were predicted relationships between cortical atrophy patterns and axonal tau deposition in midbrain cerebral peduncle and pontine base. Between syndromes, contrasting and predictable patterns of brainstem axonal tau deposition emerged, with, for example, greater tau in prefrontopontine fibers in behavioral variant FTD and in corticospinal fibers in corticobasal syndrome. Finally, semiquantitative and quantitative cortical degeneration scores predicted brainstem axonal tau deposition based on anatomical principles. Taken together, these findings provide important human evidence in support of axonal tau spreading in patients with specific forms of tau-related neurodegeneration.

Abstract

BackgroundTHK5351 and flortaucipir tau ligands have high affinity for paired helical filament tau, yet diverse off-target bindings have been reported. Recent data support the hypothesis that THK5351 binds to monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) expressed from reactive astrocytes and that flortaucipir has an affinity toward MAO-A and B; however, pathological evidence is lacking. We performed a head-to-head comparison of the two tau ligands in a sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) patient and performed an imaging-pathological correlation study.Case presentationA 67-year-old man visited our clinic a history of 6 months of rapidly progressive dementia, visual disturbance, and akinetic mutism. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed cortical diffusion restrictions in the left temporo-parieto-occipital regions. 18F-THK5351 PET, but not 18F-flortaucipir PET showed high uptake in the left temporo-parieto-occipital regions, largely overlapping with the diffusion restricted areas. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis was weakly positive for 14-3-3 protein and pathogenic prion protein was found. The patient showed rapid cognitive decline along with myoclonic seizures and died 13 months after his first visit. A post-mortem study revealed immunoreactivity for PrPsc, no evidence of neurofibrillary tangles, and abundant astrocytosis which was reactive for MAO-B antibody.ConclusionsOur findings add pathological evidence that increased THK5351 uptake in sporadic CJD patients might be caused by an off-target binding driven by its high affinity for MAO-B.

Abstract

TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) aggregation is the most common pathological hallmark in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and characterizes nearly all patients with motor neuron disease (MND). The earliest stages of TDP-43 pathobiology are not well-characterized, and whether neurodegeneration results from TDP-43 loss-of-function or aggregation remains unclear. In the behavioral variant of FTD (bvFTD), patients undergo selective dropout of von Economo neurons (VENs) and fork cells within the frontoinsular (FI) and anterior cingulate cortices. Here, we examined TDP-43 pathobiology within these vulnerable neurons in the FI across a clinical spectrum including 17 patients with sporadic bvFTD, MND, or both. In an exploratory analysis based on our initial observations, we further assessed ten patients with C9orf72-associated bvFTD/MND. VENs and fork cells showed early, disproportionate TDP-43 aggregation that correlated with anatomical and clinical severity, including loss of emotional empathy. The presence of a TDP-43 inclusion was associated with striking nuclear and somatodendritic atrophy. An intriguing minority of neurons lacked detectable nuclear TDP-43 despite the apparent absence of a cytoplasmic TDP-43 inclusion. These cells showed neuronal atrophy comparable to inclusion-bearing neurons, suggesting that the loss of nuclear TDP-43 function promotes neurodegeneration, even when TDP-43 aggregation is inconspicuous or absent.

Abstract

ObjectivesTo determine the clinical, anatomical, genetic and pathological features of dual frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) pathology: FTLD-tau and FTLD-TDP-43 in a large clinicopathological cohort.MethodsWe selected subjects with mixed FTLD-TDP and FTLD-tau from 247 FTLD cases from the University of California, San Francisco, Neurodegenerative Disease Brain Bank collected between 2000 and 2016 and compared their clinical, anatomical, genetic, imaging and pathological signatures with those of subjects with pure FTLD.ResultsWe found nine cases (3.6%) with prominent FTLD-TDP and FTLD-tau. Six cases were sporadic, whereas one case had a C9ORF72 expansion, another had a TARDBP A90V variant, and the other had an MAPT p.A152T variant. The subtypes of FTLD-TDP and FTLD-tau varied. Mixed FTLD cases were older and tended to show a higher burden of Alzheimer disease pathology (3/9, 33%). The neuroimaging signature of mixed cases, in general, included more widespread atrophy than that of pure groups. Specifically, cases of mixed corticobasal degeneration (CBD) with FTLD-TDP showed more prominent asymmetric left-sided atrophy than did those of pure CBD. However, the clinical phenotype of mixed cases was similar to that seen in pure FTLD.ConclusionsAlthough patients with mixed FTLD-TDP and FTLD-tau are rare, in-depth clinical, pathological and genetic investigations may shed light on the genetic and biochemical pathways that cause the accumulation of multiple proteinaceous inclusions and inform therapeutic targets that may be beneficial to each one of these abnormal protein misfoldings.

Abstract

Background: CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy is a type of autosomal dominant leukodystrophy caused by mutations in the colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene. Subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVaD), which is caused by cerebral small vessel disease, is similar to CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy in that it mainly affects subcortical white matter. In this study, we compared the patterns of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and cortical thickness in CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy with those in SIVaD. Methods: Fourteen patients with CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy and 129 with SIVaD were retrospectively recruited from three tertiary medical centers. We extracted and visualized WMH data using voxel-based morphometry to compare the WMH distributions between the two groups. Cortical thickness was measured using a surface-based method. Statistical maps of differences in cortical thickness between the two groups were generated using a surface model, with age, sex, education, and intracranial volume as covariates. Results: Predominant distribution of WMH in the CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy group was in the bilateral frontal and parietal areas, whereas the SIVaD group showed diffuse WMH involvement in the bilateral frontal, parietal, and temporal areas. Compared with the SIVaD group, the CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy group showed more severe corpus callosum atrophy (CCA) and widespread cortical thinning. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study using the automated MR measurement to capture WMH, cortical thinning, and CCA with signal changes in CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy. It provides new evidence regarding differences in the patterns of WMH distribution and cortical thinning between CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy and SIVaD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nursing students often face fear, anxiety, and helplessness during mental health (MH) rotations, impeding the attainment of learning objectives in the MH nursing practicum. Therefore, innovative strategies offering practice opportunities are crucial for their competence development.Methods: Using a one-group pretest-posttest repeated measures experimental design, 50 nursing students, having completed at least one MH theory course but not yet engaged in MH clinical practicum, were enrolled. Data collection occurred from October 30, 2022, to January 6, 2023. The VR simulation included six modules covering delusion, hallucination, mania, geriatric depression, adolescent depression with suicidal ideation, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Pre-simulation questionnaires and post-simulation surveys were administered through provided links. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests to assess changes over time.Results: Immediate and sustained improvements were observed in mental disorder-related nursing knowledge, communication self-efficacy, critical thinking ability, and MH nursing clinical confidence. Abstract

The ALICE Collaboration reports a differential measurement of inclusive jet suppression using pp and Pb−Pb collision data at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 in pp collisions and R= 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 in central (0−10%), semi-central (30−50%), and peripheral (60−80%) Pb−Pb collisions. A novel approach based on machine learning is employed to mitigate the influence of jet background. This enables measurements of inclusive jet suppression in new regions of phase space, including down to the lowest jet pT≥40 GeV/c at R=0.6 in central Pb−Pb collisions. This is an important step for discriminating different models of jet quenching in the quark-gluon plasma. The transverse momentum spectra, nuclear modification factors, derived cross section, and nuclear modification factor ratios for different jet resolution parameters of charged-particle jets are presented and compared to model predictions. A mild dependence of the nuclear modification factor ratios on collision centrality and resolution parameter is observed. The results are compared to a variety of jet-quenching models with varying levels of agreement.
