Abstract: Terrestrial groundwater travels through subterranean estuaries before reaching the sea. Groundwater‐derived nutrients drive coastal water quality, primary production, and eutrophication. We determined how dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) are transformed within subterranean estuaries and estimated submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient loads compiling > 10,000 groundwater samples from 216 sites worldwide. Nutrients exhibited complex, nonconservative behavior in subterranean estuaries. Fresh groundwater DIN and DIP are usually produced, and DON is consumed during transport. Median total SGD (saline and fresh) fluxes globally were 5.4, 2.6, and 0.18 Tmol yr−1 for DIN, DON, and DIP, respectively. Despite large natural variability, total SGD fluxes likely exceed global riverine nutrient export. Fresh SGD is a small source of new nutrients, but saline SGD is an important source of mostly recycled nutrients. Nutrients exported via SGD via subterranean estuaries are critical to coastal biogeochemistry and a significant nutrient source to the oceans.

The removal mechanism of refractory deep-ocean dissolved organic carbon (deep-DOC) is poorly understood. The Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP) serves as a natural test basin for assessing the fate of deep-DOC when it is supplied with a large amount of fresh-DOC and exposed to strong solar radiation during the polynya opening in austral summer. We measured the radiocarbon content of DOC in the water column on the western Amundsen shelf. The radiocarbon content of DOC in the surface water of the ASP reflected higher primary production than in the region covered by sea ice. The radiocarbon measurements of DOC, taken two years apart in the ASP, were different, suggesting rapid cycling of DOC. The increase in DOC concentration was less than expected from the observed increase in radiocarbon content from those at the greatest depths. Based on a radiocarbon mass balance, we show that deep-DOC is consumed along with fresh-DOC in the ASP. Our observations imply that water circulation through the surface layer, where fresh-DOC is produced, may play an important role in global DOC cycling.

We measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved amino acid (TDAA) in seawater and sediment porewater of the Ulleung Basin in the East/Japan Sea. The DOC and TDAA concentrations were 1.1‐ and 1.4‐fold higher in the euphotic zone, and 11‐ and 43‐fold higher in sediment porewater, respectively, than those in the deep ocean. Consequently, in the deep ocean, TDAA and DOC input fluxes from porewater were 2‐ and 0.4‐fold of those from the euphotic zone, respectively. This larger contribution of benthic flux for TDAA and its shorter residence time in the benthic boundary layer (BBL) (1.3 ± 0.9 yr) seem to result in steep TDAA increases in the BBL, although DOC concentrations remained relatively uniform throughout the entire deep ocean. AA‐derived indices also show enhanced bioavailability of dissolved organic matter in the BBL. Benthic inputs seem to supply a significant amount of bioavailable TDAA to the deep ocean, fueling microbial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Actinium‐227 (227Ac) has been used as a powerful tracer of diapycnal mixing in the ocean, assuming that it is conservative and originates mainly from deep‐sea sediments. However, here we show an unexpectedly large source (continental margin) and sink (scavenging) of 227Ac in the ocean, based on high‐resolution 227Ac distributions obtained for the first time by mooring Mn‐fibers in the East Sea (Japan Sea). Although we expected a decrease in radium‐228 (228Ra) to 227Ac ratios with depth owing to their different half‐lives, the ratios increased with depth in the upper layer, indicating efficient removal of 227Ac by particle scavenging. In addition, unusually high 227Ac activities (∼15 dpm m−3) were observed in the surface layer, likely due to the horizontal transport of 227Ac‐enriched shelf water. Thus, our results suggest refining our understanding of the geochemical cycle and application of 227Ac in the ocean. Plain Language Summary: Distributions of 227Ac provide crucial information for the vertical mixing of the deep ocean on timescales of up to 100 years. However, behaviors of 227Ac in the ocean have not been well understood to date because of its extremely low concentration. In this study, we for the first time determined high‐resolution 227Ac profiles by mooring Mn‐fibers in a marginal sea of the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Our results display that the shelf source inputs as well as efficient removal by particle scavenging have been overlooked so far. In particular, we emphasize that the removal of 227Ac by particle scavenging revealed in this study should be considered when using 227Ac as a tracer of mixing rates in the ocean.
