Background: The urinary tract dilation classification system has recently been developed to ensure a unified approach to describe urinary tract dilation in neonates and young infants. However, the predictive value of this system for surgical intervention or urinary tract infection (UTI) has not yet been evaluated in a meta-analysis. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the utility of a postnatal urinary tract dilation classification system for predicting surgical management or a UTI occurrence. Materials and methods: As the urinary tract dilation classification system was introduced in 2014, we searched Embase and PubMed databases for studies published between January 2014 and December 2022. Original articles that reported surgical interventions or UTI episodes according to postnatal urinary tract dilation grades were included. The pooled odds ratio (OR) was calculated, using either the fixed-effects or random-effects model, given the lower urinary tract dilation grades as the base category. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Results: Of the 285 articles reviewed, eight (comprising 2,165 children) were included in the analysis. The studies were of medium-to-high quality. Pooled analysis demonstrated that urinary tract dilation P3 (combined OR, 21.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 15.72–29.17) and urinary tract dilation P2–P3 (combined OR, 65.17; 95% CI, 33.08–128.38) were associated with surgical intervention. The urinary tract dilation P3 (combined OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.56–2.85) and urinary tract dilation P2–P3 (combined OR, 3.36; 95% CI, 2.43–4.63) were associated with UTI episodes. Conclusion: The postnatal urinary tract dilation classification system is useful for predicting the need for surgical management and UTI episodes in infants with hydronephrosis. We compare the accuracy and precision of the wave function correction method to that of traditional diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (traditional DQMC) simulations. Direct calculation of corrections to trial wave functions reduces time step error for Be and Ne electronic ground state energies when compared to traditional DQMC results. The fixed‐node method is utilized for these fermionic systems, so error due to incorrect node locations is not addressed. This correction DQMC method achieves more accurate energies at larger time steps, promising decreased computational cost to reach a given accuracy. For an optimized Be trial wave function, the statistical uncertainty per unit of computational effort is also reduced relative to traditional DQMC. Correction DQMC utilizes walker feed integrals and growth factors, as reported previously. We illustrate the method in a simple harmonic oscillator example, and we report high accuracy energies for Be and Ne at several time steps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It is important to ensure that both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of clinical education are maintained during the pandemic. Understanding students' views on clinical rotations and the extent of their perceived pandemic-related stress would thus be useful for designing and implementing effective clerkship programs. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate perceived stress and perceptions regarding clinical clerkship among incoming clinical students (third year) and senior clinical students (fourth year) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: After completing orientation programs at the beginning of the academic year, we surveyed students on their perceived stress, their general perspectives regarding the appropriate scope of clinical clerkship, and their preferences regarding level of participation in clerkship. We examined the differences in stress and clerkship-related perceptions based on the students' study year and sex using independent t-test, chi-squared test, and Fisher's exact test. In addition, the influences of stress, sex, and study year on clerkship-related perceptions were examined using multinomial logistic regression. Results: The independent t-test indicated that third-year students experienced lower stress than did fourth-year students. Clerkship-related perceptions also differed significantly between third- and fourth-year students. Multinomial logistic regression analyses on the scope of and participation levels in clinical clerkship revealed that third-year students had significantly lower odds of preferring a limited range of clinical rotations and lower engagement in clerkships compared to fourth-year students. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected clinical education and, consequently, medical students' inclination toward active participation in clinical rotations. Background: Interventions to prepare for a healthy pregnancy from an early age can ensure the health of both mother and child. This study aims to compare the factors associated with healthy pregnancy preparation behavior (HPPB) among male and female adolescents. Methods: A total of 690 Korean adolescents participated in this cross-sectional study from July 11 to August 24, 2018. Determinants of the likelihood of engaging in HPPB were described using hierarchical regression about the importance of and confidence in HPPB, the gender equality related to pregnancy and birth, and the health belief model (HBM) constructs about HPPB. Results: Smoking experience (β = − 0.18, p < 0.001 for boys, β = − 0.25, p < 0.001 for girls), and HBM constructs were identified as factors correlated with HPPB in both genders. The significant factors in boys were perceived susceptibility (β = − 0.13, p = 0.005), perceived severity (β = 0.12, p = 0.015), perceived benefits (β = 0.23, p < 0.001), and perceived barriers (β = − 0.18, p < 0.001), whereas the corresponding factors in girls were perceived severity (β = 0.20, p = 0.001), and perceived barriers (β = − 0.23, p < 0.001). The importance of HPPB was identified as a factor only among girls (β = 0.19, p = 0.005), while confidence in HPPB (β = 0.12, p = 0.401), gender equality related to pregnancy and childbirth (β = − 0.20, p = 0.001 for women's responsibility variable, β = 0.14, p = 0.018 for men's responsibility variable), and alcohol (β = − 0.10, p = 0.022) were factors identified only among boys. Conclusions: The gender differences in opinions on HPPB identified in this study can help nurses and community health care professionals recognize issues for which they can develop and implement preventive interventions. For healthy pregnancy preparation, interventions based on HBM constructs and smoking should be presented for both male and female adolescents. Imparting education to females on the importance of HPPB and to males on confidence in HPPB, gender equality related to pregnancy and childbirth, and alcohol consumption, should be emphasized. In addition, as perceived susceptibility may be low in a disease prevention model using the health belief model, it is necessary to prioritize increasing the perceived susceptibility of school-age children as an intervention. Background: Early adulthood is a significant period for preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy. However, previous public health initiatives have not yet emphasized preparation for a healthy pregnancy in this population. In addition, pregnancy planning has traditionally been regarded as women's responsibility, so intervention strategies may differ by gender. This study explored intentions of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy among unmarried college students, as well as factors influencing those intentions, by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model. Methods: For this cross-sectional survey, 828 unmarried college students aged 18–29 were recruited from a national university in Korea from July to September 2019. The chi-square test and t-test were used to compare gender differences in general characteristics, the current level of depression, and constructs of the extended TPB. Hierarchical regression was performed to identify factors influencing the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy. Results: The intention to manage depression was significantly higher in men than in women (t = 2.36, p = 0.019). The factors affecting the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy were components of TPB in both women and men, of which self-efficacy had the greatest effect (female: β = 0.34, p < 0.001, male: β = 0.30, p < 0.001). The current level of depression was a significant factor for women only (β = 0.10, p = 0.014). Conclusions: Our study results underscore the need for nurses to perform preventive interventions and provide directions to develop interventions to improve the intention of depression management for unmarried college students. It is necessary to intervene with all the constructs of the TPB, especially self-efficacy, for both men and women. It is also important to check and address the current depression status of unmarried female college students. The early identification of adults needing depression management is also a major challenge. In this study, an online survey was conducted to investigate levels of depression among Korean college students and their intention to manage depression for a healthy future pregnancy, as well as to identify the influencing factors. Convenience recruitment was conducted by e-mail at one university in Korea, and 828 male and female college students responded to the survey. An analysis of the factors affecting the intention to manage depression for a healthy future pregnancy identified the components of the Theory of Planned Behavior as influencing factors in both men and women. In particular, self-efficacy had the greatest influence. However, the current level of depression was only a significant factor among women. These findings could help nurses recognize differences in gender characteristics for the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy, and provide evidence to develop and implement the intervention. Dysfunction in the olfactory system of a person can have adverse effects on their health and quality of life. It can even increase mortality among individuals. Olfactory dysfunction is related to many factors, including post-viral upper respiratory infection, head trauma, and neurodegenerative disorders. Although some clinical therapies such as steroids and olfactory training are already available, their effectiveness is limited and controversial. Recent research in the field of therapeutic nanoparticles and stem cells has shown the regeneration of dysfunctional olfactory systems. Thus, we are motivated to highlight these regenerative approaches. For this, we first introduce the anatomical characteristics of the olfactory pathway, then detail various pathological factors related to olfactory dysfunctions and current treatments, and then finally discuss the recent regenerative endeavors, with particular focus on nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and stem cells. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a form of primary prevention for cervical cancer. The HPV vaccination rate of female university students is not high in Korea and China. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify and compare the factors associated with intention to receive HPV vaccination between Korean and Chinese female university students.Methods: The participants were 273 Korean and 317 Chinese female university students who had not been vaccinated for HPV, and data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire about attitudes toward HPV vaccination, HPV knowledge, perceptions of HPV infection, and intention to receive HPV vaccine.Results: There were no significant differences between the Korean and Chinese female university students in HPV knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and vaccination intention. The factors influencing the intention of HPV vaccination in Korean students were a positive attitude toward the HPV vaccine and a high HPV knowledge score. For Chinese students, sexual experience, awareness of genital warts, a positive attitude toward the HPV vaccine, a high HPV knowledge scores, a perception of the seriousness of HPV infection, and negative emotions regarding HPV infection were significant factors.Conclusions: It is important to improve attitudes and knowledge about HPV and the HPV vaccine in order to enhance HPV vaccination both in Korea and China. Cells sense the biophysical properties of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and adopt these signals in their development, progression, and metastatic dissemination. Recent work highlights the mechano-responsiveness of cells in tumors and the underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, approaches to mechano-modulating diverse types of cell have emerged aiming to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. These include targeting mechanosensitive machineries in cancer cells to induce apoptosis, intervening matrix stiffening incurred by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in both primary and metastatic tumor sites, and modulating matrix mechanics to improve immune cell therapeutic efficacy. This review is envisaged to help scientists and clinicians in cancer research to advance understanding of the cellular mechano-responsiveness in TME, and to harness these concepts for cancer mechanotherapies. The physicomechanical cues in tumors are distinct from those in normal tissues in terms of matrix properties (ligands, topology, and stiffness) and physical forces (interstitial and vascular pressure). Different types of cells (cancer cells, cancer associated fibroblasts, and immune cells) in the tumor microenvironment sense physicomechanical stimuli, and mechanotransduce and reciprocally remodel the extracellular space, dynamically shaping the tumor mechanics. The cellular mechano-responses in tumors entail stiffening of extracellular matrix and activation of mechanosensitive machineries and signaling molecules. The FKBP5 gene is known to have an important role in alcohol use disorder (AUD) in response to stress and has been reported to affect stress responses by interacting with childhood trauma. This study investigated the effects of the FKBP5 polymorphism rs1360780 and childhood trauma on trait resilience in male patients with AUD. In addition, allele-specific associations between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience were examined. In total, 297 men with AUD were assessed for alcohol use severity, childhood trauma, resilience, and impulsivity. Genotyping for FKBP5 rs1360780 and DNA methylation were analyzed. The effects of the rs1360780 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and clinical variables on resilience were tested using linear regression analysis. Possible associations between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience were tested with partial correlation analysis. The rs1360780 risk allele, a low education level, and high impulsivity were associated with diminished resilience, whereas no significant main or interaction effect of childhood trauma with the SNP rs1360780 genotype on resilience was shown. No significant association between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience was found. The present study demonstrated the involvement of the rs1360780 risk allele in trait resilience in men with AUD, suggesting that the genetic vulnerability of FKBP5 may influence resilience related to AUD. Dopamine is a major neuromodulator that is acutely involved in various cognitive processes, reward-motivated behaviors, and impulsivity. Abnormality in dopaminergic neurotransmission is implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The present study examined the genetic influence of dopamine system on problematic drinking, impulsivity, and aggressiveness in a Korean male population with AUD. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs4532 in DRD1, rs2283265 in DRD2, rs6280 in DRD3, rs1800497 in ANKK1, and rs4680 in COMT) and a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) in DAT1 in 295 male patients with AUD were genotyped. For AUD-related clinical characteristics, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and the Obsessive–Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) were used to assess the severity of hazardous drinking and craving symptoms, respectively. Participants also completed the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS-P) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ). Analyses were performed using R package SNPassoc; statistical significance was set as p < 0.0083 after Bonferroni correction. A significant association was detected between DRD3 SNP rs6280 and OCDS scores. In regard to impulsivity and aggressiveness, rs4532 of DRD1 was significantly associated with UPPS-P score. Also, rs4532 demonstrated a nominally significant association with BPAQ score, although it did not reach statistical significance after correction for multiple comparisons. Results of this study support the idea that genetic variations in the dopamine system may contribute to alcohol cravings and impulsivity in patients with AUD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioactive and biodegradable fibrous membranes are highly attractive for periodontal bone regeneration. Herein, we demonstrate a new approach for fabrication of a novel nano/micro-structured fibrous membrane made of biodegradable poly(ϵ-caprolactone)/gelatin (PCL/GEL) nanofibers and biomemtically-grown hydroxyapatite spherules (HAs). The proposed approach includes electrospinning fabrication of PCL/GEL nanofibers containing nanobioglass (NBG) agglomerates and their biomimetic transformation into HAs. The NBG agglomerates (~1.9 μm in diameter) enabled the growth of biomimetic HAs (~4 μm in diameter) around the PCL/GEL nanofibers and generated a unique nano/micro-structure. Interestingly, the biomimetically-grown HAs imparted the PCL/GEL-HAs nanofibrous membrane with several remarkable properties including nano/micro-topography, bone-mimetic composition (Ca/P = 1.60), large specific surface area (~31 m2/g), high protein adsorption capacity (~157 μg protein/mg membrane) and controlled protein delivery with zero-order release kinetics; along with sustained release of therapeutic ions (Ca2+ ~ 37 ppm, PO 4 3− ~ 24 ppm, and SiO 4 4− ~ 61 ppm). Furthermore, the PCL/GEL-HAs membrane exhibited enhanced wettability, good biodegradability and adequate mechanical properties. Collectively, the PCL/GEL-HAs demonstrated unique properties and it can be considered as a novel multifunctional bioactive/biodegradable membrane for periodontal bone regeneration. Rationale: Metacognitions, beliefs that monitor or control thoughts and coping, are considered to be important components for development and maintenance of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). Objectives: This study prospectively investigated whether metacognitive beliefs can predict early treatment response after serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) initiation in patients with OCD. Methods: Drug-naïve or medication-free patients with OCD (N = 156) were assessed for various characteristics, including metacognitions. In total, 132 patients were followed for 4 weeks, and their clinical responses to pharmacological treatment were assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). Early treatment response was defined as a 20% or greater reduction from the baseline Y-BOCS score at 4 weeks. Logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to identify major determinants for the early treatment outcome. Results: Among participants with OCD, 53 patients (40.15%) were early responders. The logistic regression model revealed two significant predictors, age (beta = − 0.113, p < 0.001) and "positive beliefs about worry," which refers to metacognitive beliefs concerning the benefits of engaging in worry (beta = − 0.067, p = 0.001), for identifying early responders. Moreover, in the linear regression model, lower "positive beliefs about worry" was also shown as a significant predictor for the degree of better early improvement (beta = − 0.566, p = 0.001). Conclusions: These results suggest that lower metacognition of "positive beliefs about worry" predicts improvement of obsessive–compulsive symptoms seen early on in the SRI treatment, and that pathological metacognitive belief would lead to delayed response to SRI treatment in OCD. Micro‐ and especially nanofiber‐type of materials are extremely attractive for a number of applications, ranging from separation and analysis to drug delivery and tissue engineering, and the majority of them are currently produced worldwide via the extremely popular and effective electrospinning technique. The addition of specific tailored molecular recognition capability to these electrospun materials via the established molecular imprinting technology can be extremely beneficial for a number of applications, as indicated by the number of examples in the literature over the past 15 years. However, the integration of these two technologies has proven to be quite challenging, mainly due to the different processing methodologies which characterize the two approaches. In this progress report, the practical difficulties related to the combination of electrospinning and molecular imprinting and to the production of molecularly imprinted electrospun fibers are addressed, discussing the main aspects to take into consideration when designing and optimizing the experimental protocols, as well as highlighting the most prolific research applications that have been explored thus far, to conclude with a commercial/industrial and economic perspective on the envisaged market for these hybrid products. Background: Oxytocin is an important neuromodulator involved in cognition and socio-emotional processing that exerts its central activities via oxytocin receptors. Epigenetic alterations in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) may be a molecular mechanism in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study investigated the association between OXTR DNA methylation and the OCD status of a Korean population. Results: Quantitative leukocyte DNA methylation levels of three cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites in the 5′ untranslated region (UTR) of OXTR exon 2 and eight CpG sites within OXTR exon 3 were analyzed using the pyrosequencing method in 151 patients with OCD (including 45 drug-naïve patients) and 108 healthy controls. DNA methylation levels were compared between the groups using multiple analyses of covariance separately by sex after controlling for age and educational level. Patients with OCD showed significantly lower methylation levels at CpG1 and CpG2 sites on the UTR of OXTR exon 2 than those of healthy controls for both sexes. In a subset of 45 drug-naïve patients with OCD, the DNA methylation levels also remained significantly lower than those in the controls and their CpG1 methylation levels were significantly negatively associated with the ordering symptom dimension. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that epigenetic OXTR alterations may affect the pathophysiology of OCD. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic and relapsing disease with a substantial genetic influence. Given the recent discovery of the association of PPM1G methylation with alcohol use disorder (AUD) from a genome-wide methylation study, we sought to verify and extend the previous work of AUD-related impulsivity in a Korean population with AUD. A total of 244 men with AUD were assessed for psychological characteristics and behavioral impulsivity using stop signal task (response inhibition) and Balloon Analog Risk Task (risk-taking). Leukocyte DNA methylation at PPM1G was quantified using pyrosequencing. The effects of PPM1G methylation on severity of problematic drinking measured by Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and multidimensional impulsivity were tested using linear regression analyses. Hypermethylation of PPM1G was significantly associated with risk-taking propensity among men with AUD. No significant association of PPM1G methylation was found to be associated with AUDIT scores and response inhibition. Our findings indicate that altered methylation of PPM1G may influence the impulsive choice of risk-taking in AUD. Further research is required in order to determine the role of PPM1G in the pathophysiology of AUD and multidimensional impulsivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the degree to which nurses are aware of cervical cancer and to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients with cervical cancer. To promote quality of nursing care of cervical cancer, we need to explore their perceptions and nursing experience in doing cervical-cancer care. This study was a qualitative descriptive design. Interviews were conducted with 14 registered nurses. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analyzed. Content analysis was performed. Fourteen nurses who had been working at wards and cancer education centers were recruited in this study. Nine key themes emerged from three categories such as nurses’ awareness of cervical cancer, awareness of cervical cancer patient and caring experience. Nurses expressed fear of cervical cancer and helplessness in the face of a life-threatening prognosis. Nurses stated that they might have prejudice about cervical cancer, since it is caused by a sexually transmitted disease. They also recalled that patients with cervical cancer were more sensitive and demanding. Our findings provide a comprehensive and in-depth perspective in understanding the experience of caring for cervical cancer patients. Clinical nurses showed complex emotional reactions to cervical cancer, and expressed prejudice against the sex life of cervical-cancer patients. More education is required to ensure that clinical nurses can provide a nurse-led intervention with patients by managing nurses’ fear, prejudice, and the care burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Aims: A growing body of literature has indicated that oxytocin is associated with several domains of social cognition and behavior. Nevertheless, the effects of oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) polymorphisms on social phenotypes remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the genetic influence of OXTR variants on social cognition (social perception and theory of mind) and resilience in healthy individuals. Methods: We examined the influence of 10 common OXTR variants on social cognitive abilities, including facial emotion recognition and theory of mind, and trait resilience in 264 unrelated, healthy participants. Results: We found a significant association between the A‐C haplotype at rs237887‐rs2268490 and facial affect recognition. In addition, the single marker rs2254298 was significantly associated with participants' scores on the Connor‐Davidson Resilience Scale. In contrast, variations in OXTR did not affect participants' performance on the false‐belief reasoning task. Background: In June 2016, the Republic of Korea included free human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations for all 12-year-old girls in its national immunization program. Purpose: This study investigated perceptions of nurses on HPV vaccination and their intent to vaccinate preteens at the best ages. Methods: Recruited for the survey were 514 health teachers (181, 35.2%), public health nurses (168, 32.7%), and clinical nurses (165, 32.1%). Factor-analysis was conducted to validate the Vaccine-Hesitancy Scale for Korean nurses. Related variables associated with vaccine-acceptance were examined using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Spearman’s rho coefficients, due to lack of normalization. Results: Factor-analysis results showed that two factors of positive acceptance (7 items) and negative acceptance (3 items) accounted for 67.46% of the total variance, and explained 47.4% and 20.1%, respectively. Nurses who positively accepted HPV vaccine differed significantly in agreement to vaccinate girls or boys. For the proper vaccination age, a significant difference emerged between answers for girls and vaccine-acceptance scores, whereas no difference emerged between answers for boys and the scores. The vaccinated status of respondents significantly related to higher HPV vaccine acceptance, although age, religion, marital status, education, and working duration did not. We calculate the deuterium electric field gradient in the HD and D2 molecules at various internuclear separations by making use of a previously proposed variation–perturbation method. We calculate DEFG values at internuclear separations R=1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6. We also calculate the average values for the vibrational ground state v=0 and for the vibrational states J=0, J=1, and J=2 of the HD and D2 molecules. The vibrational averaged DEFG value is very close to the equilibrium value at R=1.4 due to accidental cancellation of different contributions. We report theoretical results of the electric field gradient at the position of the deuterium nucleus in the DF molecule. The purpose of the calculation is the evaluation of a correction term to the expectation value of the electric field gradient with respect to a linear combination of atomic orbitals-molecular orbital self-consistent field (LCAO-MO SCF) function proposed by Ransil. Our method is based on a variation-perturbation method that was proposed previously. The expectation value of q0D (el) is qD =-2.8964, the corrected value is qD (el)=-2.9056, and the experimental value is qD (exp)=-2.9241 (all values are expressed in terms of atomic units). Abstract: Aim: This study was conducted in order to examine the effects of community‐based education on cervical cancer prevention in relation to South Korean mothers’ knowledge about the Papanicolau (Pap) test and human papillomavirus, self‐confidence in communication with their daughters, and health‐related beliefs about their daughters. Methods: A quasi‐experimental pre–post design was used. For the experimental group, face‐to‐face education was administered to 35 participants for 60 min. For the control group, 35 participants were taught by using standardized materials for 20 min. Results: The experimental group showed a significant increase in Pap test knowledge, cervical cancer knowledge, and self‐confidence in communication with their daughters, compared to the control group. In the post‐test, the mothers in the experimental group also perceived cervical cancer as more threatening, their daughter as more susceptible to cervical cancer, Pap tests as being recommended for their daughters, and they showed a significant increase in their self‐efficacy of recommending the Pap test to their daughter. Conclusion: Community‐based education for mothers is effective in increasing their human papillomavirus knowledge, Pap test knowledge, improving their confidence in communication with their daughters, and in some of the health‐related beliefs regarding their daughters. Accumulating evidence suggests that the glutamatergic system plays a major role in the pathophysiology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and empathic processing. Particularly, genetic influence of glutamate transporter gene (SLC1A1) on OCD has been frequently replicated in previous studies, but several studies did not replicate the result. Therefore, we aimed to replicate the associations between the SLC1A1 and OCD in a Korean population. In addition, we investigated the influence of SLC1A1 on trait empathy, impairments in which are characteristic of OCD. Six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of SLC1A1 were genotyped in 615 patients with OCD and 508 healthy controls. The interpersonal reactivity index (IRI)—which consists of four subscales (perspective taking, PT; fantasy seeking, FS; empathic concern, EC; personal distress, PD)—was assessed from 277 patients with OCD and 395 controls. There were no significant associations between OCD and SNPs or haplotypes of SLC1A1. Patients with OCD exhibited significantly lower PT and higher PD scores than controls. The C-T-G haplotype at rs301430-rs301434-rs3087879 of SLC1A1 was significantly associated with higher PD scores after adjusted for age, sex, and OCD status. Our results suggest that six common SNPs of SLC1A1 may not contribute to the development of OCD, but may contribute to certain aspect of trait empathy such as personal distress. However, insufficient sample size and limited number of SLC1A1 SNPs may have reduced the likelihood of detecting significant associations. The fibronectin type 10-peptide amphiphile (FNIII10-PA) was previously genetically engineered and showed osteogenic differentiation activity on rat bone marrow stem cells (rBMSCs). In this study, we investigated whether FNIII10-PA demonstrated cellular activity on polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers. FNIII10-PA significantly increased protein production and cell adhesion activity on PCL fibers in a dose-dependent manner. In cell proliferation results, there was no effect on cell proliferation activity by FNIII10-PA; however, FNIII10-PA induced the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells via upregulation of bone sialoprotein (BSP), collagen type I (Col I), osteocalcin (OC), osteopontin (OPN), and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) mitochondrial RNA (mRNA) levels; it did not increase the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) mRNA level. Objective Zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) is widely used as a therapeutic dental restorative material. However, ZOE has poor mechanical properties and high cytotoxicity toward human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) due to the release of Zn ions. In this study, zirconia-incorporated ZOE (ZZrOE) was developed to reduce the cytotoxicity and improve the mechanical properties of ZOE with sustained therapeutic effects on inflamed hDPSCs in terms of inflammatory gene expression levels compared with those of the original material. Methods After the setting time and mechanical properties of ZZrOE incorporating varying amounts of zirconia (0, 5, 10, and 20 wt% in powder) were characterized, the surface morphology and composition of the resulting ZZrOE materials were investigated. The ions and chemicals released into the cell culture medium from ZOE and ZZrOE (3 cm 2 /mL) were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and gas chromatography, respectively. After testing cytotoxicity against hDPSCs using the above extracts, the therapeutic effects on lipopolysaccharide-inflamed hDPSCs in terms of compromising the upregulation of inflammatory response-related mRNA expression were tested using real-time PCR. Results ZZrOE 20% exhibited increased compressive strength (∼45%), 3-point flexural strength (∼150%) and hardness (∼75%), as well as a similar setting time (∼90%), compared with those of ZOE. After the rough surface of ZZrOE was observed, significantly fewer released Zn ions and eugenol (∼40% of that from ZOE) were detected in ZZrOE 20%. ZZrOE showed less cytotoxicity because of the lower amount of Zn ions released from ZOE while showing sustained inhibition of inflammatory marker (e.g., interleukin 1β, 6 and 8) mRNA levels. Significance The improved mechanical properties and cytocompatibility, as well as the sustained therapeutic effects on inflamed hDPSCs, were investigated in ZZrOE compared with those of ZOE. Background and aim: Tumor burden is important to predict clinical behaviors of cancer such as lymph node metastasis (LNM). Tumor size has been used as a parameter of tumor burden such as indication of endoscopic resection in early gastric cancer (EGC) to predict LNM. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether tumor area can be more helpful to predict clinical behaviors than longest diameter of tumor in EGC. Patients and methods: 3,059 patients who underwent gastrectomy for EGC were reviewed retrospectively. Tumor area was calculated by multiplying long and short diameter of the tumor in surgical specimen. Longest diameter means maximal longitudinal diameter of tumor in specimen. Clinicopathologic features were compared between longest diameter and area using area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves. Results: Longest diameter and area of tumor showed a strong correlation (correlation coefficient 0.859, p<0.01). The cutoff value for prediction of LNM was 20 mm of longest diameter of tumor and 270 mm2 of tumor area. There was no significant difference between longest diameter and area for prediction of LNM (AUC 0.850 vs. 0.848, respectively). In differentiated-type EGC and undifferentiated-type EGC, there was no significant difference between longest diameter and area for prediction of LNM. Among mucosal or submucosal cancer prediction value of LNM between longest diameter and area was not significantly different. Conclusion: Tumor area may not be more helpful to predict LNM than longest diameter in EGC. Therefore, the longest diameter of tumor may be sufficient as an indicator of tumor burden in EGC. The oxytocin receptor ( OXTR ) is a potential candidate in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study investigated the association between common single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) of the OXTR gene and the affected status of OCD or distinct clinical subtypes of OCD including the age at onset and symptom dimensions. Ten SNPs of OXTR were examined in 615 patients with OCD and 581 healthy controls. Single-marker and haplotype-based association analyses were conducted. While OXTR variants were not associated with the affected status of OCD or its clinical symptom dimensions, rs2268493 ( p = 0.00185) and rs13316193 ( p = 0.00461) of the OXTR gene were associated with the age at onset in patients with OCD. In addition, in haplotype-based association analyses, there was a significant association between the OXTR gene and the onset age in patients with OCD. In particular, the G-C-G haplotype of rs2268493-rs2254298-rs11316193 and the T-G-A haplotype of rs237887-rs2268490-rs4686301 were positively associated with late-onset OCD. Our results suggest that common variants of OXTR may exert a modulating effect on the onset age in OCD pathophysiology. Background: Although cognitive impairment is not a consistent feature of multiple system atrophy (MSA), increasing evidence suggests that cognitive impairment is common in MSA with predominant parkinsonism (MSA-P). It is assumed that the cognitive impairment in MSA-P is caused by the striatal dysfunction and disruption of striatofrontal connections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between regional glucose metabolism in the frontal cortex and striatum in patients with MSA-P using [18F]FDG brain PET. Methods: Twenty-nine patients with MSA-P and 28 healthy controls underwent [18F]FDG brain PET scan. The [18F]FDG brain PET images were semiquantitatively analyzed on the basis of a template in standard space. The regional glucose metabolism of the cerebral cortex and striatum were compared between MSA-P and healthy control groups. The correlations between age, symptom duration, H&Y stage, UPDRS III score, MMSE score, and glucose metabolism in the cerebellum and striatum to glucose metabolism in the frontal cortex were evaluated by multivariate analysis. Results: The glucose metabolism in the frontal cortex and striatum in MSA-P patients were significantly lower than those in healthy controls. Glucose metabolism in the striatum was the most powerful determinant of glucose metabolism in the frontal cortex in MSA-P. Only age and glucose metabolism in the cerebellum were independent variables affecting the glucose metabolism in the frontal cortex in healthy controls. Conclusion: The decrease in frontal glucose metabolism in MSA-P is related to the decrease in striatal glucose metabolism. Nanofibrous structures exhibit many interesting features, such as high surface area and surface functionalization and porosity in the range from submicron to nanoscale, which mimics the natural extracellular matrix. In particular, electrospun nanofibers have gained great attention in the field of tissue engineering due to the ease of fabrication and tailorability in pore size, scaffold shape, and fiber alignment. For the reasons, recently, polymeric nanofibers or bioceramic nanoparticle-incorporated nanofibers have been used in dentistry, and their nanostructure and flexibility have contributed to highly promotive cell homing behaviors, resulting in expecting improved dental regeneration. Background: Mothers have a primary role in the prevention of cervical cancer in Korea. This study aimed to determine the awareness and health beliefs of mothers about preventing cervical cancer in their daughters, their intention to recommend the Pap test to their daughters, and the factors influencing this intention.Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was employed, and the study enrolled mothers (n = 1,581) of pubescent girls aged 13 to 18 years who were living nationwide in Korea. The six health-beliefs variables related to preventing cervical cancer in their daughters, awareness of the importance of cervical cancer prevention methods, and the intention to recommend the Pap test to daughters were investigated. The impacts of these health beliefs of the mothers and the sociodemographic factors influencing their intention to recommend the Pap test to their daughters were assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis.Results: Almost one-quarter (23.7 %) of the mothers had talked about the Pap test, 69.2 % were intending to recommend the Pap test to their daughters, and 38.5 % considered that the Pap test could be necessary if their daughters became sexually active. The significant health beliefs influencing the intention to recommend the Pap test were the perceived barriers [odds ratio (OR) = 1.47, 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) = 1.03-2.11] and benefits (OR = 2.25, 95 % CI = 1.55-3.25). The significant sociodemographic factors of mothers were their education (OR = 1.52, 95 % CI = 1.08-2.13), their experience of talking about the Pap test with their daughters (OR = 2.11, 95 % CI = 1.23-3.64), their regularity of undergoing the Pap test themselves (OR = 1.98, 95 % CI = 1.30-3.03), and their age when they first underwent the Pap test (OR = 1.60, 95 % CI = 1.43-0.82).Conclusions: The mothers perceived HPV vaccination as the most important of the five methods for preventing cervical cancer in their daughters. Mothers perceived the importance of their daughters undergoing the Pap test regardless of the presence of HPV vaccination, and most of the mothers had an intention of recommending the Pap test to their daughters. Strategies for increasing the intention of mothers to recommend the Pap test to their adolescent daughters could be promoted by increasing their perceptions of the benefits while reducing their perceptions of barriers toward their daughters undergoing the Pap test, and by empowering active communication about the Pap test between mothers and daughters. Herbal drugs are generally regarded as safe due to their extensive clinical use especially in East Asian countries. However, the potential toxicity of herbal drugs has become an important medical issue recently, resulting in numerous reports of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Here, we performed a systematic review of herbal medicines with the potential to cause hepatotoxicity in Korea. A literature search of six databases, including PubMed and five Korean electronic databases, was performed to identify cases of herb-induced liver injury (HILI) in Korea, yielding 31 unique reports, including 21 single herb and 10 multi-herb preparations. From these reports, we identified 97 cases of HILI (47 males, 49 females, and 1 unknown sex) consisting of 74.7% hepatocellular-type injury, 10.8% cholestatic-type injury, and 14.5% mixed-type injury. Causative agents included 21 unique herbal preparations, including 11 single species and 10 multispecies, with Polygoni Multiflori (39.2%) and Dictamnus dasycarpus (37.1%) as the most frequent agents. These analyses presented a feature of HILI, and produced a comprehensive list of herbs with a higher risk of hepatotoxicity in Korea. Further studies will be necessary to ascertain the mechanisms by which these herbs induce HILI and to determine whether these effects are specific to the Korean population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The survival of cells in the 3D scaffold until the ingrowth of blood vessels is one of the most important challenges in tissue engineering for producing a clinically relevant volume of tissue. In this study, perfluorooctane emulsion (oxygen carrier)-loaded hollow microparticles (PFO-HPs) were prepared as a scaffolding system which can allow timely release of oxygen to cells adhered on the HPs to prevent cell necrosis in a hypoxic environment (inherently created in tissue engineered 3D constructs) until new blood vessels are formed in the 3D cell construct, and thus may produce appropriate tissues/organs with a clinically relevant volume. In the in vitro cell culture and the in vivo animal study, it was observed that the cells initially seeded on the PFO-HPs remained alive for approximately 10 days in a hypoxic environment ( in vitro ), and the cells were also found throughout the implanted whole matrix without a necrotic center until the infiltration of blood vessels (at 14 days after implantation; in vivo ), probably due to the sufficient release of oxygen from the PFO-HPs for an adequate time period. Background Deficits in decision-making have been suggested as a key concept in understanding the symptoms of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). However, evidence in the extant literature remains inconclusive on whether patients with OCD show inferior performance on laboratory decision-making tasks. The aims of the present study were therefore to (1) assess decision-making under ambiguity and under risk in patients with OCD and (2) study the influence of neuropsychological and clinical variables on decision-making in OCD. Methods The sample consisted of 65 patients with OCD and 58 controls. The Iowa gambling task (IGT) and the game of dice task (GDT) were used to examine decision-making under ambiguity and decision-making under risk, respectively. In addition, reversal learning and executive function were assessed in terms of their relationship with decision-making tasks. Results Patients with OCD showed impairment in the IGT, but not in the GDT. Reversal learning was neither impaired nor correlated with IGT performance. Among the clinical variables, illness severity and depression were associated with IGT scores. Executive function was impaired, but no significant relationship was found between executive function and GDT performance in OCD patients. Limitations Almost all OCD patients were on medication when they performed decision-making tasks. Conclusions Patients with OCD are impaired in decision-making under ambiguity, but not under risk. Background/Aim: Little is known about the patterns of treatment failure following definitive chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), especially in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We evaluated definitive CCRT failure patterns and determined the predictive factors for treatment response in esophageal SCC. Methods: We evaluated 136 consecutive patients with esophageal SCC treated with definitive CCRT. We evaluated the factors associated with complete remission (CR) after CCRT and analyzed the pattern of treatment failure of recurred patients and incomplete remission patients. The failures were categorized as either within (locoregional failure) or outside the radiation field (out-field failure). Results: Fifty-seven patients achieved CR after CCRT. Consolidation chemotherapy was significantly associated with CR. Only 4 (7.0%) patients had CR after CCRT in patients with M1a node (Celiac or subclavian lymph nodes involvement by 6th AJCC). During follow-up, 74 patients (54.4%) experienced locoregional failure, 26 (19.1%) out-field failure, and 35 (25.7%) no failure. Esophageal obstruction prior to CCRT, residual tumor according to the first follow-up endoscopy, and poor follow-up computed tomography responses were significantly associated with locoregional failure. Conclusion: Approximately 70% of treatment failures were local failures. Future therapeutic strategies need to focus on improving local control to increase treatment outcomes of CCRT. © 2014 S. In recent years, nanoparticles have been highly investigated in the laboratory. However, only a few laboratory discoveries have been translated into clinical practice. These findings in the laboratory are limited by trial-and-error methods to determine the optimum formulation for successful drug delivery. A new paradigm is required to ease the translation of lab discoveries to clinical practice. Due to their previous success in antiviral activity, it is vital to accelerate the discovery of novel drugs to treat and manage viruses. Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence and consists of computer algorithms which are improved through experience. It can generate predictions from data inputs via an algorithm which includes a method built from inputs and outputs. Combining nanotherapeutics and well-established machine-learning algorithms can simplify antiviral-drug development systems by automating the analysis. Other relationships in bio-pharmaceutical networks would eventually aid in reaching a complex goal very easily. From previous laboratory experiments, data can be extracted and input into machine learning algorithms to generate predictions. In this study, poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles were investigated in antiviral drug delivery. Data was extracted from research articles on nanoparticle size, polydispersity index, drug loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency. The Gaussian Process, a form of machine learning algorithm, could be applied to this data to generate graphs with predictions of the datasets. The Gaussian Process is a probabilistic machine learning model which defines a prior over function. The mean and variance of the data can be calculated via matrix multiplications, leading to the formation of prediction graphs—the graphs generated in this study which could be used for the discovery of novel antiviral drugs. The drug load and encapsulation efficiency of a nanoparticle with a specific size can be predicted using these graphs. A phase II study of NK cell therapy in treatment of patients with recurrent breast cancer has recently been reported. However, because of the complexities of tumor microenvironments, effective therapeutic effects have not been achieved in NK cell therapy. Radioiodine (I-131) therapy inhibits cancer growth by inducing the apoptosis and necrosis of cancer cells. Furthermore, it can modify cancer cell phenotypes and enhance the effect of immunotherapy against cancer cells. The present study showed that I-131 therapy can modulate microenvironment of breast cancer and improve the therapeutic effect by enhancing NK cell cytotoxicity to the tumor cells. The susceptibility of breast cancer cells to NK cell was increased by precedent I-131 treatment in vitro. Tumor burden in mice treated with I-131 plus NK cell was significantly lower than that in mice treated with NK cell or I-131 alone. The up-regulation of Fas, DR5 and MIC A/B on irradiated tumor cells could be the explanation for the enhancement of NK cell cytotoxicity to tumor cells. Background: Chronic sialadenitis is one of the most frequent chronic complications after radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for thyroid cancer. To evaluate the long-term effects of RAI ablation on salivary gland function, we investigated scintigraphic changes in salivary glands by direct comparison of two salivary gland scintigraphies (SGSs) taken before and at 5 years after an RAI ablation. Methods: SGS was performed just before RAI ablation (pre-SGS) and ∼5 years after RAI ablation (F/U SGS) in 213 subjects who underwent thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer. The uptake score (U score) was graded, and the ejection fraction (EF) was quantified for the parotid and submandibular glands at pre-SGS and F/U SGS. Changes in salivary gland function were graded as mild, moderate, or severe according to the differences in U score and EF between the two SGSs. Xerostomia was assessed and compared with the SGS findings. Results: Worsening of the U score was observed in 182 of 852 salivary glands (total: 21.3%; mild: 4.2%, moderate: 7.4%, severe: 9.7%), and 47.4% of the patients had a worsening U score for at least one of four salivary glands. A decrease in EF was observed in 173 of 852 salivary glands (total: 20.3%; mild: 5.4%, moderate: 6.8%, severe: 8.1%), and 43.7% of the patients experienced a decrease in the EF of at least one of the four salivary glands. Bilateral parotid gland dysfunction was the most commonly observed condition. Thirty-five (16.4%) patients complained of xerostomia at 5 years after RAI ablation. Scintigraphic changes in salivary gland function and xerostomia were more common in patients receiving 5.55 GBq, compared with 3.7 GBq. Xerostomia was more common in patients with submandibular gland dysfunction than those with parotid gland dysfunction (68.8% vs. 33.3%, p<0.05). The number of dysfunctional salivary glands was correlated with xerostomia ( p<0.01). Conclusion: About 20% of the salivary glands were dysfunctional on SGS 5 years after a single RAI ablation, especially in patients who received higher doses of RAI. While parotid glands are more susceptible to 131I-related damage, xerostomia was more associated with submandibular gland dysfunction and the prevalence of dysfunctional salivary glands. Abstract: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rate in Korea is very low because a school-based HPV vaccination program has not yet been introduced. This study was designed to assess HPV knowledge, compare the health beliefs toward HPV vaccination and intention to recommend HPV vaccination for girls and boys, and identify the factors influencing the intention to recommend HPV vaccination for girls and boys among Korean health teachers. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, in which 757 health teachers who worked at elementary, middle, high, and special schools in Korea participated via an online survey. A self-administered, structured questionnaire was applied, which included items on sociodemographics, HPV awareness, HPV knowledge, perceived benefits, susceptibility, severity, and barriers toward HPV vaccination for girls and boys, and intention to recommend HPV vaccination for girls and boys. The rate of correct HPV knowledge items ranged from 5.2% to 89.2%; 23.4% of the health teachers answered that they had ever taught about HPV, 97% answered that both boys and girls should receive HPV vaccination, and 47.6% answered that the best time for HPV vaccination is when students are at middle school. There were differences regarding the perceived benefits (Z =−7.69, p <0.001), perceived susceptibility (Z =−3.37, p =0.001), perceived severity (Z =−4.13, p <0.001), and perceived barriers (Z =−4.90, p <0.001) toward HPV vaccination, and regarding intention to recommend HPV vaccination (Z =−15.21, p <0.001) for girls and boys. Factors associated with the intention to recommend HPV vaccination for girls were the HPV vaccination status of the health teachers’ children [odds ratio (OR)=4.24, 95% confidence interval (95% CI)=1.14–15.72], and the teachers’ Pap-test experience (OR =2.50, 95% CI=1.05–5.91), perceived benefits (OR=3.30, 95% CI=1.26–7.40), perceived susceptibility (OR=3.25, 95% CI=1.58–6.68), and perceived barriers (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.30–0.99); these factors for boys were the health teachers’ career duration (OR=1.61, 95% CI=1.12–2.32), HPV knowledge (OR=1.45, 95% CI=1.01–2.09), perceived benefits (OR=3.46, 95% CI=2.27–5.26), perceived susceptibility (OR=1.55, 95% CI=1.04–2.29), and perceived severity (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.15–2.56). General awareness of HPV should be increased and more specific information about HPV—including that related to vaccination of boys and men—should be provided for health teachers. Although a school-based HPV vaccine program has yet to be introduced in Korea, health teachers should possess general knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination, and differences in attitudes and intentions related to HPV vaccination between girls and boys should be reduced. We developed and validated a new staging system that includes metabolic information from pretreatment [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for predicting disease-specific survival (DSS) in gastric cancer (GC) patients. Overall, 731 GC patients undergoing preoperative [18F]FDG PET/CT were enrolled and divided into the training (n = 543) and validation (n = 188) cohorts. A metabolic score (MS) was developed by combining the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the primary tumor (T_SUVmax) and metastatic lymph node (N_SUVmax). A new staging system incorporating the MS and tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage was developed using conditional inference tree analysis. The MS was stratified as follows: score 1 (T_SUVmax ≤ 4.5 and N_SUVmax ≤ 1.9), score 2 (T_SUVmax > 4.5 and N_SUVmax ≤ 1.9), score 3 (T_SUVmax ≤ 4.5 and N_SUVmax > 1.9), and score 4 (T_SUVmax > 4.5 and N_SUVmax > 1.9) in the training cohort. The new staging system yielded five risk categories: category I (TNM I, II and MS 1), category II (TNM I, II and MS 2), category III (TNM I, II and MS ≥ 3), category IV (TNM III, IV and MS ≤ 3), and category V (TNM III, IV and MS 4) in the training cohort. DSS differed significantly between both staging systems; the new staging system showed better prognostic performance in both training and validation cohorts. The MS was an independent prognostic factor for DSS, and discriminatory power of the new staging system for DSS was better than that of the conventional TNM staging system alone. Background: Salivary dysfunction is the most common side effect associated with 131I therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of parotid gland (PG) massage on radioisotope accumulation in the salivary gland. Methods: Sixty patients were included in this study. Using Tc-99m pertechnetate, two salivary scans were performed in all patients. In 30 patients, PG massage was performed between the two salivary gland scans, whereas in the other 30 patients no massage was performed between the two scans. Total counts of both PGs and accumulation ratios were calculated. Results: In the patients who received massage, no difference was observed between the mean PG counts of first and second images (8556.9±3333.4 count vs. 8598.3±3341.3 count, p=0.39). In the patients who did not receive massage, the mean PG count on second images was significantly higher than that on first images (8581.2±3618.0 count vs. 9096.4±3654.0 count, p<0.01). Mean accumulation ratio in the patients who received massage was significantly lower than in the patients who did not receive massage (0.5%±3.3% vs. 6.8%±3.8%, p<0.01). Further, among the patients who received massage there was a higher percentage of patients with a negative accumulation ratio than among the patients who did not receive massage (43.3% vs. 0%, p<0.01). Abstract: Dentin sialoprotein (DSP) is cleaved from dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) and most abundant dentinal non-collagenous proteins in dentin. DSP is believed to participate in differentiation and mineralization of cells. In this study, we first constructed recombinant human DSP (rhDSP) in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and investigated its odontoblastic differentiation effects on human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). Cell adhesion activity was measured by crystal violet assay and cell proliferation activity was measured by MTT assay. To assess mineralization activity of rhDSP, Alizarin Red S staining was performed. In addition, the mRNA levels of collagen type І (Col І), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and osteocalcin (OCN) were measured due to their use as mineralization markers for odontoblast-/osteoblast-like differentiation of hDPCs. The obtained rhDSP in E. coli was approximately identified by SDS–PAGE and Western blot. Initially, rhDSP significantly enhanced hDPCs adhesion activity and proliferation (p< 0.05). In Alizarin Red S staining, stained hDPCs increased in a time-dependent manner. This odontoblastic differentiation activity was also verified through mRNA levels of odontoblast-related markers. Here, we first demonstrated that rhDSP may be an important regulatory ECM in determining the hDPCs fate including cell adhesion, proliferation, and odontoblastic differentiation activity. In addition to heme-irons, reactive (β-globin thiols (βCys93s) of hemoglobin (Hb) also have been shown to interact with endogenous nitric oxide (NO) thereby contributing to vascular tone regulation. What relative roles do these NO binding sites contribute to the overall Hb-mediated vasoactivity? Several test Hbs with either or both the NO binding sites preliganded or blocked were prepared and tested in a rat thoracic aortic ring model. Hbs tested were: NEM-Hb (ferrous Hb with masked thiols), HbNO (ferrous Hb preliganded with NO), Hb+CN (ferric Hb liganded with CN−), NEM-HbNO and NEM-Hb+CN (Hbs with both heme-iron and cysteine sites preliganded or blocked). Typically, >0.2 μM control Hb significantly increased isometric tension in agonist stimulated vessel rings (58.1 ±7.0% over baseline). At comparable concentrations, NEM-Hb also caused a significant contraction (50.7±9.5%) while HbNO and Hb+CN did not (−5.5±6.0% and −3.7±4.6%, respectively). For these Hbs, masking thiols as well did not significantly alter respective vascular effects. Ferrous sperm whale myoglobin (Mb), which has no reactive thiol, elicited a significant contraction (55.1±13.2%) while metMb did not (−0.8±3.2%), suggesting the relative importance of heme-iron ligand and oxidation state in Hb vasoactivity. Additionally, ferrous or ferric equine heart cytochrome-C, a heme protein with no readily available heme-iron and cysteine binding sites, did not elicit notable contraction. Human Hb variants in which (βCys93s are deleted or substituted with non-cysteine residues did not reveal any documented significant hemodynamic abnormalities. Abstract: The vibrational frequencies, normal mode assignments and the internal-rotation and inversion potential energy surfaces of methylarsine and methylstibine are reported. The potential energy distribution (PED) for each frequency is found using Kim''s Correspondence Rules of unified group theory and the program MOLVIB. The predominant motion of each PED is used to name the corresponding vibrational frequency. We also report the infrared spectra prediction of deuterated isotopomers. Our predicted infrared spectra show good agreement with experiment. In the potential energy surfaces of both molecules, there are three minimum energy states; and three first-order internal-rotation, six first-order inversion, and six second-order inversion transition-states. Calculations are performed at the HF, DFT/B3LYP, and MP2 levels of theory using GAUSSIAN 03 quantum chemistry code. • Novel mesoporous Co-BGn were produced by ultrasonic-coupled sol-gel method. • Co-BGn (<100 nm) exhibited spherical morphology and high worm-like mesoporosity. • XPS confirmed the presence of Co2+ions in the glass network structure of Co-BGn. • Co-BGn showed sustained release of Co2+ ions with controlled and fast release kinetics. • Controlled release Co-BGn can be considered as hypoxia-mimic nanotherapeutics. • Fast release Co-BGn can be considered for ferroptosis killing of cancer cells. Herein, novel Co2+ ions-containing mesoporous bioactive glass nanospheres (Co-BGn) with low and high cobalt contents were prepared by a facile one-pot ultrasonic-coupled sol-gel synthesis. Structural evaluations revealed that Co-BGn are totally amorphous and cobalt ions exist as Co2+ ions in the glass structure. Notably, Co-BGn exhibited uniform spherical morphology, nanosize (< 100 nm), high worm-like mesoporosity (0.41 cm3/g) and large specific surface area ca. 787.5 m2/g. Interestingly, low and high Co-BGn showed sustained release of Co2+ ions with controlled release (8 – 32 ppm) and fast release (54 – 112.5 ppm) kinetics over 2 weeks, respectively. Furthermore, Co-BGn showed good bone-like hydroxyapatite formation in vitro. Accordingly, low Co-BGn with controlled release of Co2+ ions can be considered as hypoxia-mimic nanotherapeutics for bone/skin tissue regeneration. Using the HF, MP2, and DFT methods with a 6-311G** basis set, we examine the internal-rotation and inversion of the amino and phosphino groups in methylamine and methylphosphine. The resulting energy surfaces are reported as a function of rotation and inversion descriptors. Both surfaces are characterized by several special points: three minimum energy states, three first-order internal-rotation transition states, six first-order inversion transition states, and six second-order inversion transition states. The MP2 method gave better agreement with experiment. For methylamine, the MP2 energy barrier for internal-rotation is 8.73 kJ/mol; for first-order inversion it is 22.80 kJ/mol and for second-order inversion it is 22.41 kJ/mol. Abstract: Normal mode assignments of the IR frequencies of methylamine and methylphosphine and their deuterated isotopomers are determined based on calculated potential energy distributions. The PED for each frequency is found using Kim’s Correspondence Rules of unified group theory and the program MOLVIB. The predominant motion of each PED is used to name the corresponding vibrational frequency. We compare our results with literature values. Our IR frequency assignments show generally good agreement with experiment and other calculations although there are some differences. We observe no differences in the principal component of normal mode PEDs across different levels of theory with the same basis set. In this brief overview, recent progress and current status of blood substitute research and development is summarized. Current blood substitute development efforts are focused on red blood cell substitutes but substitutes for platelets and other blood components are also in progress. Red cell substitutes currently in various stages of development are semi-synthetic or synthetic oxygen carriers that include “stealth” or “masked” red cells, hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers and perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carriers. Artificial platelets (or platelet substitutes) are in early stages of development and include human platelet fragments or particles of synthetic/semi-synthetic materials or recombinant human serum albumin coupled with platelet surface receptor fragments. Of note, some recombinant clotting factors (Factors VII, VIII, IX) have already been successfully developed and licensed for treatment of hemophilia. Abstract: Collagen-derived gelatin/hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocomposites were biomimetically synthesized for hard tissue engineering scaffold. In vitro osteoblastic cellular responses to the nanocomposites were assessed in comparison with those conventionally mixed gelatin–HA composites. A three-dimensional culture method involving floating cells in a culture medium was introduced to assist in the initial attachment of the cells to the scaffolds, and the proliferation and differentiation behaviors of the cells were examined. The osteoblastic MG63 cells attached to the nanocomposites to a significantly higher degree and subsequently proliferated more. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and osteocalcin produced by the cells were significantly higher on the nanocomposite scaffolds than on the conventional composite scaffolds. These improved cellular responses on the nanocomposites are considered to result from the increased ionic release and serum protein adsorption on the nanocomposites, which was derived from the different structural and morphological characteristics, i.e., the nanocomposite scaffolds retained less-crystallized and smaller-sized apatite crystals and a more well-developed pore configuration than the conventional ones. Based on these findings, the biomimetically synthesized nanocomposite scaffolds are believed to be potentially useful in hard tissue regeneration and tissue engineering fields. Abstract: Fluorine was administered to a system of hydroxyapatite (HA)/polycaprolactone (PCL) ceramic-polymer bioactive composites for applications as hard tissue regeneratives. The HA was fluoridated at different levels (5%, 25%, 50% and 75%) in order to produce the fluor-hydroxyapatite (FHA)/PCL composites. The osteoblastic cellular responses to the composites were examined in terms of the cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation as well as the expression of bone-associated genes. The amount of fluorine released from the composites was controlled by changing the degree of fluoridation, and the cellular responses were strongly influenced by the level of fluoridation. The MG63 cells on the FHA-PCL attached and proliferated at a similar level to those on HA-PCL. However, the fluoridation of HA increased significantly the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and osteocalcin (OC) production by the cells on the composites, which was measured by an enzymatic assay. Moreover, the gene expression level of ALP and OC in the cells was up regulated on the FHA-PCL, which was confirmed semi-quantitatively by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. These findings on the fluorine-administered biological composites (FHA-PCL) suggested that fluorine plays a significant role in stimulating the bone derived cellular activity, and the FHA-PCL composites have high potential for use as hard tissue regeneratives. Abstract: Fluorapatite (FA)–collagen composites were synthesized via a biomimetic coprecipitation method in order to improve the structural stability and cellular responses. Different amounts of ammonium fluoride (NH4F), acting as a fluorine source for FA, were added to the precipitation of the composites. The precipitated composites were freeze-dried and isostatically pressed in a dense body. The added fluorine was incorporated nearly fully into the apatite structure (fluoridation), and a near stoichiometric FA–collagen composite was obtained with complete fluoridation. The freeze-dried composites had a typical biomimetic network, consisting of collagen fibers and precipitates of nano-sized apatite crystals. The human osteoblast-like cells on the FA–collagen composites exhibited significantly higher proliferation and differentiation (according to alkaline phosphatase activity) than those on the hydroxyapatite–collagen composite. These enhanced osteoblastic cell responses were attributed to the fluorine release and the reduced dissolution rate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The normal mode frequencies of isotopomers of trans- and gauche-ethylphosphine and its deuterated species are determined using the gaussian 98 quantum chemistry code. The calculations were performed at the Hartree–Fock, second-order Møller–Plesset and density functional levels with the 6-311G** basis set. The trans conformer was more stable than the gauche conformer by 2.24kJ/mol at the DFT level theory. At 25°C, ΔG0 for the trans→gauche equilibrium is 2.06kJ/mol and the relative population of gauche:trans conformers is 46.6%. The effect of deuterations of the hydrogen atoms in each functional group, separately and in combination, is studied. A comparison was made with the experimental infrared spectra for trans and gauche conformers of CH3CH2PH2 and CH3CH2PD2. For the trans conformer of eight isotopomers of ethylphosphine, potential energy distributions were determined using the program MOLVIB and Kim''s Correspondence Rules of unified group theory. The PED results were used to assign predominant vibrational motions for the trans conformer. The RMS deviation of calculated frequencies from experimental values is reported. The average scaling factors for all vibrational motions for CH3CH2PH2 and CH3CH2PD2 are 0.9197 for HF, 0.9534 for MP2 and 0.9860 for DFT.
