We present a bottom-up argument showing that the number of massless fields in six-dimensional quantum gravitational theories with eight supercharges is uniformly bounded. Specifically, we show that the number of tensor multiplets is bounded by $T\leq 193$, and the rank of the gauge group is restricted to $r(V)\leq 480$. Given that F-theory compactifications on elliptic CY 3-folds are a subset, this provides a bound on the Hodge numbers of elliptic CY 3-folds: $h^{1,1}({\rm CY_3})\leq 491$, $h^{1,1}({\rm Base})\leq 194$ which are saturated by special elliptic CY 3-folds. This establishes that our bounds are sharp and also provides further evidence for the string lamppost principle. These results are derived by a comprehensive examination of the boundaries of the tensor moduli branch, showing that any consistent supergravity theory with $T\neq0$ must include a BPS string in its spectrum corresponding to a "little string theory" (LST) or a critical heterotic string. From this tensor branch analysis, we establish a containment relationship between SCFTs and LSTs embedded within a gravitational theory. Combined with the classification of 6d SCFTs and LSTs, this then leads to the above bounds. We discuss two physics-inspired approaches to derivation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of $A_N$ Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. First approach which was recently proposed by the authors relies on the computations of superconformal indices of class $\mathcal{S}$ $4d$ ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories with the insertion of surface defects. Second approach uses computations of Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of $5d$ ${\mathcal N} = 1^*$ instanton partition functions in the presence of co-dimension two defect. We compare results of these two approaches for the low-lying levels of Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. We also discuss different previously proposed exact quantization conditions for the Coulomb branch parameters of the instanton partition functions and their interpretations in terms of index calculations., Comment: 25 pages

We propose new constraints for 6d (1, 0) supergravity theories based on consistency conditions on the Kahler moduli spaces of their 5d reductions. The requirement that both the metric and the BPS string tensions in the Kahler moduli space are positive imposes specific restrictions on the Chern-Simons coefficients in the 5d effective Lagrangians that are derived from the Kaluza-Klein reductions of 6d theories. Moreover, the emergence of local interacting 5d CFTs when the moduli space metric degenerates introduces additional constraints coming from the analysis of 5d SCFTs. Focusing on the moduli spaces of 6d supergravity theories without a tensor multiplet and their Higgsings, we show that these constraints require the presence of certain primary states in the 2d worldvolume CFTs on 1/2 BPS strings. We specifically analyze a class of SU(2) models and infinite families of U(1) models using these constraints, and demonstrate that the theories featuring a 1-form symmetry in their massless spectra, unless the 1-form symmetry is gauged, fail to satisfy the constraints and therefore belong to the Swampland., Comment: 32 pages, v2: typos fixed, references added

We present an efficient method to compute the modular extension of both fermionic topological orders and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric bosonic topological orders in two spatial dimensions, basing on congruence representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and its subgroups. To demonstrate the validity of our approach, we provide explicit calculations for topological orders with rank up to 10 for the fermionic cases and up to 6 for the bosonic cases. Along the way, we clarify the relation between fermionic rational conformal field theories, which live on the boundary of the corresponding fermionic topological orders, and modular extensions. We explore BPS strings in supergravity theories in six-dimensions and related Swampland Conjectures. We first propose a general modular ansatz for bootstrapping elliptic genera of 2d worldvolume theories on strings in the 6d theories. By employing mirror symmetry on F-theory examples, we explicitly compute the elliptic genera and validate our ansatz. We extend this approach to investigate BPS strings and their spectrum in non-geometric 6d theories which have no known F-theory constructions, and confirm the Swampland conjectures, including the Weak Gravity Conjecture, Distance Conjecture, and Emergent String Conjecture. We propose two novel methods for computing the superconformal index of 5d superconformal field theories that cannot be described by conventional Lagrangian descriptions under mass deformations. The first approach involves the use of Higgs branch flows from UV Lagrangian theories, guided by transitions in 5-brane webs in Type IIB string theory. The second method employs the relationship between O$7^+$-plane and O$7^-$-plane with eight D7-branes, which applies to particular non-Lagrangian theories realized by brane configurations involving an O$7^+$-plane. As a concrete application of our method, we compute the superconformal indices for all known rank-1 non-Lagrangian theories, which we also use to identify flavor symmetries and their global forms at the conformal field theory (CFT) fixed points., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We discuss a 4d Lagrangian descriptions, across dimensions IR dual, of compactifications of the 6d $(\text{D},\text{D})$ minimal conformal matter theory on a sphere with arbitrary number of punctures and a particular value of flux as a gauge theory with a simple gauge group. The Lagrangian has the form of a ``star shaped quiver'' with the rank of the central node depending on the 6d theory and the number and type of punctures. Using this Lagrangian one can construct across dimensions duals for arbitrary compactifications (any, genus, any number and type of $\text{USp}$ punctures, and any flux) of the $(\text{D},\text{D})$ minimal conformal matter gauging only symmetries which are manifest in the UV., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We propose blowup equations for 6d little string theories which generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka's blowup equations for the 4d/5d instanton partition functions on Omega background. We find that unlike the blowup equations for standard SQFTs, we need to sum over auxiliary magnetic fluxes on the blown-up $ \mathbb{P}^1$ for a non-dynamical 2-form gauge field which plays a role in canceling the mixed anomalies of the gauge symmetries. We demonstrate with explicit examples that the blowup equations, when combined with the modular properties, can be solved in order to determine the elliptic genera of little strings., Comment: 71 pages, 6 figures

$\mathbb{Z}_n$ S-folds of 5d SCFTs, including $T_N$, which lead to brane webs with $E_{6,7,8}$ 7-branes were discussed recently. We generalize the construction to `fractional quotients', which are based on $\mathbb{Z}_n$ actions linking multiple copies of the seed theory and lead to $H_{0,1,2}$ 7-branes. We provide the holographic duals for both classes. This expands the space of explicitly known Type IIB $\rm AdS_6$ solutions by incorporating F-theory 7-branes of type $E_{6,7,8}$ and $H_{0,1,2}$, extending previous constructions for O7-planes. The fusion rules and braiding statistics of anyons in $(2+1)$D fermionic topological orders are characterized by the modular data of a super-modular category. On the other hand, the modular data of a super-modular category form a congruence representation of the $\Gamma_\theta$ subgroup of the modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We provide a method to classify the modular data of super-modular categories by first obtaining the congruence representations of $\Gamma_\theta$ and then building candidate modular data out of those representations. We carry out this classification up to rank $10$. We obtain both unitary and non-unitary modular data, including all previously known unitary modular data, and also discover new classes of modular data of rank $10$. We study the IR phases of 3D class R theories associated with closed non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds can be obtained by performing Dehn fillings on 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds along exceptional slopes. In 3D-3D correspondence, the `exceptional' Dehn filling corresponds to the gauging of an $SU(2)$ flavor symmetry in a superconformal field theory associated with a 1-cusped 3-manifold with `small' Chern-Simons levels. With several explicit examples, we analyze various interesting non-perturbative IR phenomena (such as spontaneous SUSY breaking, generation of mass gap and supersymmetry enhancement) from the `exceptional' gaugings. Interestingly, distinguished features of the IR phases can be captured by simple topological properties of non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also find that 3D class R theories associated with certain classes of atoroidal non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds always exhibit supersymmetry enhancement at low energy and actually flow to 3D rank-0 $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs with trivial vacuum moduli space., Comment: 71 pages, 7 figures

We explore the $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings of some 5d superconformal field theories from the $(p,q)$ 5-brane web perspective. The S-folding involves both a spatial quotient and an $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformation on 5-branes simultaneously. The $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings are achieved by the insertion of the $D_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ 7-branes, respectively. The deficit angles and monodromies of these 7-branes are exactly those necessary for the S-foldings. We explore the details of the S-folding process, especially the enhancement of global flavor symmetry in various simple cases. The characteristic of the S-folding depends sharply on whether the fixed point of the discrete symmetry is at the center of a compact face (or surface), at a 5-brane, or at a crossing point of 5 branes. We discuss supersymmetric defects in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs with $\mathrm{SO}(N_c)$ gauge group and $N_c-8$ fundamental flavors. The codimension 2 and 4 defects are engineered by coupling the 6d gauge fields to charged free fields in four and two dimensions, respectively. We find that the partition function in the presence of the codimension 2 defect on $\mathbb{R}^4\times \mathbb{T}^2$ in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit satisfies an elliptic difference equation which quantizes the Seiberg-Witten curve of the 6d theory. The expectation value of the codimension 4 defect appearing in the difference equation is an even (under reflection) degree $N_c$ section over the elliptic curve when $N_c$ is even, and an odd section when $N_c$ is odd. We also find that RG-flows of the defects and the associated difference equations in the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N+1)$ gauge theories triggered by Higgs VEVs of KK-momentum states provide quantum Seiberg-Witten curves for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twisted compactifications of the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N)$ gauge theories.

We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka's blowup formula to calculate the partition functions counting the spectrum of bound states to half-BPS Wilson loop operators in 5d (and 6d) supersymmetric field theories. The partition function in the presence of a Wilson loop operator on the $\Omega$-background is factorized when put on the blowup $\hat{\mathbb{C}}^2$ into two Wilson loop partition functions under the localization. This structure provides a set of blowup equations for Wilson loop operators. We explain how to formulate the blowup equations and solve them to compute the partition functions of Wilson loop operators. In this work we study the quantisation of the Seiberg-Witten curve for the E-string theory compactified on a two-torus. We find that the resulting operator expression belongs to the class of elliptic quantum curves. It can be rephrased as an eigenvalue equation with eigenvectors corresponding to co-dimension 2 defect operators and eigenvalues to co-dimension 4 Wilson surfaces wrapping the elliptic curve, respectively. Moreover, the operator we find is a generalised version of the van Diejen operator arising in the study of elliptic integrable systems. Although the microscopic representation of the co-dimension 4 defect only furnishes an $\mathrm{SO}(16)$ flavour symmetry in the UV, we find an enhancement in the IR to representations in terms of affine $E_8$ characters. We construct novel web diagrams with a trivalent or quadrivalent gluing for various 6d/5d theories from certain Higgsings of 6d conformal matter theories on a circle. The theories realized on the web diagrams include 5d Kaluza-Klein theories from circle compactifications of the 6d $G_2$ gauge theory with 4 flavors, the 6d $F_4$ gauge theory with 3 flavors, the 6d $E_6$ gauge theory with 4 flavors and the 6d $E_7$ gauge theory with 3 flavors. The Higgsings also give rise to 5d Kaluza-Klein theories from twisted compactifications of 6d theories including the 5d pure SU(3) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level 9 and the 5d pure SU(4) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level 8. We compute the partition function for 6d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SO(2N)$ gauge theories compactified on a circle with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ outer automorphism twist. We perform the computation based on 5-brane webs with two O5-planes using topological vertex with two O5-planes. As representative examples, we consider 6d $SO(8)$ and $SU(3)$ gauge theories with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twist. We propose a systematic approach to computing the BPS spectra of any 5d/6d supersymmetric quantum field theory in Coulomb phases, which admits either gauge theory descriptions or geometric descriptions, based on the Nakajima-Yoshioka's blowup equations. We provide a significant generalization of the blowup equation approach in terms of both properly quantized magnetic fluxes on the blowup $\hat{\mathbb{C}}^2$ and the effective prepotential for 5d/6d field theories on the Omega background which is uniquely determined by the Chern-Simons couplings on their Coulomb branches. We employ our method to compute BPS spectra of all rank-1 and rank-2 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories descending from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with/without twist. We also discuss various 5d SCFTs and KK theories of higher ranks, which include a few exotic cases such as new rank-1 and rank-2 5d SCFTs engineered with frozen singularity as well as the 5d $SU(3)_8$ gauge theory currently having neither a brane web nor a smooth shrinkable geometric description. Quantum curves arise from Seiberg-Witten curves associated to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories by promoting coordinates to non-commutative operators. In this way the algebraic equation of the curve is interpreted as an operator equation where a Hamiltonian acts on a wave-function with zero eigenvalue. We find that this structure generalises when one considers torus-compactified 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. The corresponding quantum curves are elliptic in nature and hence the associated eigenvectors/eigenvalues can be expressed in terms of Jacobi forms. In this paper we focus on the class of 6d SCFTs arising from M5 branes transverse to a $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity. In the limit where the compactified 2-torus has zero size, the corresponding 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories are known as class $\mathcal{S}_k$. We explicitly show that the eigenvectors associated to the quantum curve are expectation values of codimension 2 surface operators, while the corresponding eigenvalues are codimension 4 Wilson surface expectation values., Comment: 65 pages, 3 figures

We present a novel M-theoretic approach of constructing and classifying anyonic topological phases of matter, by establishing a correspondence between (2+1)d topological field theories and non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this construction, the topological phases emerge as macroscopic world-volume theories of M5-branes wrapped around certain types of non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We devise a systematic algorithm for identifying the emergent topological phases from topological data of the internal wrapped 3-manifolds. As a benchmark of our approach, we reproduce all the known unitary bosonic topological orders up to rank 4. Remarkably, our construction is not restricted to an unitary bosonic theory but it can also generate fermionic and/or non-unitary topological phases in an equivalent fashion. We propose Swampland constraints on consistent 5-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity theories. We focus on a special class of BPS magnetic monopole strings which arise in gravitational theories. The central charges and the levels of current algebras of 2d CFTs on these strings can be calculated by anomaly inflow mechanism and used to provide constraints on the low-energy particle spectrum and the effective action of the 5d supergravity based on unitarity of the worldsheet CFT. In M-theory, where these theories are realized by compactification on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, the special monopole strings arise from wrapped M5-branes on special ("semi-ample") 4-cycles in the threefold. We identify various necessary geometric conditions for such cycles to lead to requisite BPS strings and translate these into constraints on the low-energy theories of gravity. These and other geometric conditions, some of which can be related to unitarity constraints on the monopole worldsheet, are additional candidates for Swampland constraints on 5-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity theories., Comment: 65 pages. v2: typos fixed

We study supersymmetry breaking deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5d fixed point known as $E_1$, the UV completion of $SU(2)$ super-Yang-Mills. The phases of the non-supersymmetric theory can be characterized by Chern-Simons terms involving background $U(1)$ gauge fields, allowing us to identify a phase transition at strong coupling. We consider supergravity theories with 16 supercharges in Minkowski space with dimensions $d>3$. We argue that there is an upper bound on the number of massless modes in such theories depending on $d$. In particular we show that the rank of the gauge symmetry group $G$ in $d$ dimensions is bounded by $r_G\leq 26-d$. This in particular demonstrates that 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theories with rank bigger than 22, despite being consistent and indeed finite before coupling to gravity, cannot be consistently coupled to ${\cal N}=4$ supergravity in Minkowski space and belong to the swampland. Our argument is based on the swampland conditions of completeness of spectrum of defects as well as a strong form of the distance conjecture and relies on unitarity as well as supersymmetry of the worldsheet theory of BPS strings. The results are compatible with known string constructions and provide further evidence for the string lamppost principle (SLP): that string theory lamppost seems to capture ${\it all}$ consistent quantum gravitational theories., Comment: 8 pages, v2: minor changes

We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau threefolds provide hitherto unknown M-theory duals of F-theory configurations compactified on a circle with twists. We propose Type IIB 5-brane configurations that engineer the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs with $SO(N)$ gauge symmetry coupled to a single tensor multiplet on a circle, by considering RG flows on Higgs branches of $D$-type conformal matter theories. We test the brane systems against known Calabi-Yau threefolds for the 6d SCFTs on a circle. In addition we study a new RG flow involving Higgs vevs of scalar operators with Kaluza-Klein momentum along the circle. Completeness of the spectrum of charged branes in a quantum theory of gravity naturally motivates the question of whether consistency of what lives on the branes can be used to explain some of the Swampland conditions. In this paper we focus on consistency of what lives on string probes, to show some of the theories with ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry in 10d and 6d, which are otherwise consistent looking, belong to the Swampland. Gravitational and gauge group anomaly inflow on these probes can be used to compute the gravitational central charges $(c_L,c_R)$ as well as the level of the group's current algebra $k_L$. The fact that the left-moving central charge on the string probes should be large enough to allow {\it unitary} representations of the current algebra with a given level, can be used to rule out some theories. This in particular explains why it has not been possible to construct the corresponding theories from string theory., Comment: 9 pages

We show that the non-gravitational sectors of certain 6d and 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which are coupled together by pairwise identifying and gauging mutual global symmetries. In the case of 6d supergravity, we consider F-theory on compact elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds with base $B=T^4/\mathbb{Z}_n\times \mathbb{Z}_m$ and we show in many examples that the non-gravitational field theory sectors can be described as configurations of coupled 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs. We also conjecture that the effective 2d $(0,4)$ SCFTs living on the self-dual strings of the 6d theories lead to holographically dual descriptions of type IIB string theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times B$ and moreover that their elliptic genera can be used to compute the degeneracies of 5d spinning BPS black holes along with all-genus topological string amplitudes on the corresponding compact 3-fold. In the case of 5d supergravity, we consider M-theory on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds and using similar ideas as in the 6d case we show the complete non-gravitational sector of 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into coupled 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. Furthermore, using this picture we propose a generalized topological vertex formalism which, excluding some curve classes, seems to capture all-genus topological string amplitudes for the mirror quintic., Comment: 115 pages, 36 figures

In this paper we study compactifications of ADE type conformal matter, N M5 branes probing ADE singularity, on torus with flux for global symmetry. We systematically construct the four dimensional theories by first going to five dimensions and studying interfaces. We claim that certain interfaces can be associated with turning on flux in six dimensions. The interface models when compactified on a circle comprise building blocks for constructing four dimensional models associated to flux compactifications of six dimensional theories on a torus. The theories in four dimensions turn out to be quiver gauge theories and the construction implies many interesting cases of IR symmetry enhancements and dualities of such theories., Comment: 66 pages; 38 figures

We discuss the four dimensional models obtained by compactifying a single M5 brane probing $D_{N}$ singularity (minimal D-type $(1,0)$ conformal matter in six dimensions) on a torus with flux for abelian subgroups of the $SO(4N)$ flavor symmetry. We derive the resulting quiver field theories in four dimensions by first compactifying on a circle and relating the flux to duality domain walls in five dimensions. We formulate geometric conditions necessary for engineering 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) via M-theory compactification on a local Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Extending the classification of the rank 1 cases, which are realized geometrically as shrinking del Pezzo surfaces embedded in a 3-fold, we propose an exhaustive classification of local 3-folds engineering rank 2 SCFTs in 5d. This systematic classification confirms that all rank 2 SCFTs predicted using gauge theoretic arguments can be realized as consistent theories, with the exception of one family which is shown to be non-perturbatively inconsistent and thereby ruled out by geometric considerations. We find that all rank 2 SCFTs descend from 6d (1,0) SCFTs compactified on a circle possibly twisted with an automorphism together with holonomies for global symmetries around the Kaluza-Klein circle.
