Obesity is a major public health problem related to various chronic health conditions. Lactobacillus species has been reported in obese individuals; however, its role is unknown. We compared the abundance and composition of Lactobacillus species by analyzing feces from 64 healthy control subjects and 88 obese subjects. We isolated one Lactobacillus strain from the feces of a subject with obesity and further analyzed its genetic and molecular features. We found that an increased abundance and higher prevalence of Lactobacillus sakei distinguished the fecal microbiota of the obese group from that of healthy subjects and that it was related to the increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by higher fat intake. The L. sakei ob4.1 strain, isolated from the feces of a subject with obesity, showed high catalase activity, which was regulated by oxidative stress at the gene transcription level. L. sakei ob4.1 maintained colon epithelial cell adhesion ability under ROS stimulation, and treatment with saturated fatty acid increased colon epithelial ROS levels in a dose-dependent manner; however, L. sakei ob4.1 did not change the level of fat-induced colon epithelial ROS. Exposing mice to a high-fat diet revealed that high-fat-diet-induced colon ROS was associated with the increased colonization of L. sakei ob4.1 through catalase activity. Four-week supplementation with this strain in mice fed a high-fat diet did not change their body weights or ROS levels. A high-fat diet induces changes in the colon environment by increasing ROS levels, which provides a colonization benefit to an L. sakei strain with high catalase activity. IMPORTANCELactobacillus provides many health benefits; its various species are widely used as probiotics. However, an increased abundance of Lactobacillus has been reported in obesity, and the role of Lactobacillus strains in obesity remains unknown. We found a high abundance of the Lactobacillus sakei species in a group of obese subjects and examined its relationship with a high-fat diet and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the feces. To find the underlying mechanism, we analyzed and characterized an L. sakei strain isolated from a severely obese individual. We found that higher gut oxidative stress could link high-fat-diet-induced obesity and L. sakei. This translational research identifies the roles of the host gut environment in the colonization and survival of L. sakei.

In this paper, the development and performance evaluation of a 4WD robot system designed to follow near-distance moving objects using a 2D LiDAR sensor are presented. The study incorporates identifier (ID) classification and a distance-based dynamic angle of perception model to enhance the tracking capabilities of the 2D LiDAR sensor. A particle filter algorithm was utilized to verify the accuracy of object tracking. Furthermore, a proportional–derivative (PD) controller was designed and implemented to ensure the stability of the robot during operation. Background/Objectives: Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for lung nodule detection often face challenges with 5 mm computed tomography (CT) scans, leading to missed nodules. This study assessed the efficacy of a deep learning-based slice thickness reduction technique from 5 mm to 1 mm to enhance CAD performance. Methods: In this retrospective study, 687 chest CT scans were analyzed, including 355 with nodules and 332 without nodules. CAD performance was evaluated on nodules, to which all three radiologists agreed. Results: The slice thickness reduction technique significantly improved the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for scan-level analysis from 0.867 to 0.902, with a p-value < 0.001, and nodule-level sensitivity from 0.826 to 0.916 at two false positives per scan. Notably, the performance showed greater improvements on smaller nodules than larger nodules. Qualitative analysis confirmed that nodules mistaken for ground glass on 5 mm scans could be correctly identified as part-solid on the refined 1 mm CT, thereby improving the diagnostic capability. Conclusions: Applying a deep learning-based slice thickness reduction technique significantly enhances CAD performance in lung nodule detection on chest CT scans, supporting the clinical adoption of refined 1 mm CT scans for more accurate diagnoses. Background: Sotos syndrome (SS) is a rare disorder characterized by overgrowth, distinctive facial features, and intellectual disability that is primarily caused by NSD1 pathogenic variants or 5q35 microdeletions. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and 339 anthropometric measurements over an average of 4.3 years of follow‐up in 57 Korean children with SS. Sex‐specific percentile curves for height, weight, and head circumference were developed using a generalized additive model that included factors such as location, scale, and shape. Results: Males with SS demonstrated higher height before the age of 12.0, greater weight before 10.0, and larger head circumference before 15.5 compared to age‐ and sex‐matched controls. Females with SS displayed higher height before 17.0, greater weight before 10.5, and larger head circumference before 12.0 compared to controls. Bone age was advanced compared to chronological age in 40% of males and 8% of females at their last visit. The predicted and target adult heights were not significantly different between groups. In subgroup analysis, the intragenic variant group (n = 48) showed a higher mean standard deviation score of height and weight in males, and head circumference in females compared to the microdeletion group (n = 9). Conclusions: Korean children with genetically confirmed SS exhibited overgrowth in height, weight, and head circumference. Overgrowth phenotypes were more prominent in patients with NSD1 intragenic variants than in those with microdeletions. Imha Reservoir has both a water transfer tunnel connecting Andong Reservoir and a selective withdrawal facility (SWF), which enable the innovative operation of the reservoir. Although these facilities had not been equipped when constructed in 1993, these structural measures were applied afterward as needed for the effective reservoir operation. The tunnel was constructed in 2015 to minimize the spillway discharge of a reservoir during floods by moving water to the other reservoir with free space. The SWF was installed in 2006 to address problems due to the persistent turbidity of Imha Reservoir. The effectiveness of these facilities was demonstrated through the operational cases in October 2019, while some improvements to non-structural measures were derived simultaneously. To prevent damage to the fish ecosystem of Imha reservoir, the tunnel currently was operated in a one-way water movement. However, a two-way water movement should be allowed as designed in the mid to long term. The SWF was operated effectively based on the prediction of the fate and transport of turbid water inside the reservoir using CE-QUAL-W2. Nevertheless, more action procedures on turbid water are required, such as setting clear criteria for the release timing of turbid water, predicting the downstream turbidity variations, etc.
