11. Network Brokerage and Self-Rated Popularity among Lao School-Based Children: Findings from Primary Survey Data

Abstract

This study examines whether and how an individual's subjective, or self-rated, popularity is related to one's structural position in the peer network, as measured by betweenness centrality and structural hole measure. Data were drawn from the original fieldwork conducted in Laos (N = 1,490; boys = 40%; M[subscript age] = 13), a low-income country in Southeast Asia. Using friendship nominations, we constructed a global network matrix based on which sociometric variables were calculated. Findings from hierarchical linear models showed that net of sociometric and other controls, "network brokers"--those who span more structural holes or bridge across more disconnected dyads pairs--indeed perceive themselves as being "more popular." Subjective, net of objective, measure of popularity should be incorporated as a critical component in the lives of young people.

18. Prosodic Information in the Resolution of Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity in L2 Sentence Processing

Abstract

This study investigates the nature of L2 sentence processing mechanisms by examining whether or to what extent the sensitivity to prosody would affect the resolution of relative clause attachment ambiguity. The study examines how native speakers of a high attachment language would resolve the attachment ambiguity of their second language which has the opposite preference. Twelve Korean-speaking L2 learners of English and twelve native English speakers participated in a listening task to examine the effect of different types of prosodic information, such as prosodic boundary and focal prominence, along with a silent-reading task. The results showed that L2 learners' high attachment preferences in English were consistent in both tasks, but the focal prominence factor reinforced this preference in the listening task. The findings suggest that L2 learners' parsing routines generally followed their L1-specific high attachment, and this default preference was reinforced by convergent prosodic prominence and intonation contour. Emphasizing that L2 sensitivity to prosody reflects a specific modular organization, the study argues that an L1-induced default projection in processing of relative clause attachment can be enhanced or reduced by specific accentual patterns in L2 sentence processing, without the need to claim shallow processing of L2 learners.

34. Exploring Pre-Service Teachers' Beliefs about English Teaching Competence, Perceived Competence, and Actual Competence

Abstract

The present study explores what constitutes pre-service teachers' beliefs about English teaching competence, perceived English teaching competence, and actual English teaching competence, how these variables are related, and how beliefs function in self-evaluation. Eighty-eight pre-service elementary school teachers participated in the study. They were asked to perform the teaching task and respond to the surveys about beliefs and self-evaluation. The scores of beliefs, self-evaluation, and actual teaching ability were calculated and analyzed. The results are as follows: Pre-service teachers' three variables, beliefs about English teaching competence, perceived English teaching competence, and actual English teaching competence, are separate constructs consisting of different components; there are correlations between some of these components and actual English teaching competence. Also, this study revealed that one of the components--perceived competence about their skills of designing and teaching effective English lessons--best explains actual English teaching competence. Additionally, it was found that preservice teachers make some errors when they evaluate their English teaching competence, which causes tendencies such as overestimation or underestimation of their competence, and that their beliefs play a role in these self-evaluation tendencies.
