Introduction Atypical response to sensory stimuli is common in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) population. While sensory over-responsivity in the gustatory domain (GOR) among ASD has been frequently reported, previous reviews were not solely focused on GOR in the ASD population. This review sheds light on pertinent sensory functions in ASD, differences in GOR between those with and without ASD, and concepts related to GOR in ASD. Results Neurobiological mechanisms in GOR were less studied in the population with ASD. Also, it is not clear if GOR is from difficulties of differentiation, detection threshold, and multisensory integration. Among thirty-six studies using behavioral questionnaires, a greater proportion of ASD (36-72%) had GOR compared to typically developing (TD, 20%) individuals. Furthermore, the ASD population repeatedly showed severe GOR scores relative to the TD cohort. Brain imaging studies suggested aberrant neural responses to oral stimuli as a contributing factor. It is posited that GOR contributes to food selectivity and poor dental care among ASDs. Poor nutritional outcomes among ASDs are controversial. However, severe GOR and food selectivity in reported cases present life-threatening events like pulmonary hypertension mediated by vitamin deficiencies. In addition, being underweight or overweight was associated with GOR in youths with ASD, raising a chronic health concern for general health and well-being. Another emerging consideration is the role of gut microbiome disruption in individuals with ASD and its relationship with GOR. Finally, the ASD population showed more common gastrointestinal problems than their TD counterparts, implying that GOR could be a consequence of anxiety from prior gastrointestinal experiences. Conclusion To provide families with ASD with an environment that promotes healthy development and growth, we need further research, development of clinical management, and policy changes. Thus, we recommend the targeted study of the neural mechanisms, microbiome consequences, and evidence-based intervention for GOR in ASDs.

Citrus fruits are widely distributed in East Asia, and tea made from citrus peels has demonstrated health benefits, such as a reduction in fever, inflammation, and high blood pressure. However, citrus leaves have not been evaluated extensively for their possible health benefits. In this study, the α-glucosidase-inhibitory activity of Jeju citrus hot-water (CW) and ethyl alcohol (CE) extracts, along with hesperidin (HP) (a bioactive compound in citrus leaf extracts), was investigated, and furthermore, their effect on postprandial blood glucose reduction in an animal model was determined. The hesperidin contents of CW and CE were 15.80 ± 0.18 and 39.17 ± 0.07 mg/g-extract, respectively. Hesperidin inhibited α-glucosidase (IC50, 4.39), sucrase (0.50), and CE (2.62) and demonstrated higher α-glucosidase inhibitory activity when compared to CW (4.99 mg/mL). When using an SD rat model, during sucrose and starch loading tests with CE (p < 0.01) and HP (p < 0.01), a significant postprandial blood glucose reduction effect was observed when compared to the control. The maximum blood glucose levels (Cmax) of the CE administration group decreased by about 15% (from 229.3 ± 14.5 to 194.0 ± 7.4, p < 0.01) and 11% (from 225.1 ± 13.8 to 201.1 ± 7.2 hr·mg/dL, p < 0.05) in the sucrose and starch loading tests, respectively. Our findings suggest that citrus leaf extracts standardized to hesperidin may reduce postprandial blood glucose levels through the observed inhibitory effect against sucrase, which results in delayed carbohydrate absorption. Background: Our study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiologic results of all-arthroscopic treatment of terrible triad injuries followed-up for a minimum of 5 years and investigate how arthroscopic partial excision for radial head fractures affects the results at the final follow-up. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients with terrible triad injuries who underwent all-arthroscopic treatment between January 2011 and June 2018. In group I, we performed conservative or arthroscopic fixation of stable radial head fractures, while in group II, arthroscopic partial excision of unstable radial head fractures involving <30%–50% of the articular surface area was performed. Clinical outcomes were measured by visual analog scale score and assessment of instability, range of motion (ROM), and Mayo Elbow Performance Score. Radiological outcomes were evaluated using x-rays, and the integrity of the repaired lateral collateral ligament complex was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging. Results: Thirty-two patients with an average age of 49.5±16.2 years met the inclusion criteria and were followed-up for a mean of 82.7±22.2 months. Twenty patients were assigned to group I and 12 patients to group II. Clinical outcomes showed no significant differences between the two groups at the final follow-up (P>0.05). On radiological evaluation, more heterotopic ossifications were found in the radial head excision group (group II, 66.7% vs. group I, 35%; P=0.02); however, there was no significant difference in ROM between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: In all-arthroscopic treatment of terrible triad injuries, arthroscopic partial excision of the radial head did not seem to have a significant impact on elbow joint stability. Introduction Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents that often continues until adulthood. (1) Youth with ADHD commonly show hyperactivity, inattentiveness and impulsivity, frequently expressed [...], Background: Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show structural alterations in the subcortical and dopaminergic regions of the brain. Methylphenidate is a first-line treatment for ADHD, and it is known to affect the subcortical and dopaminergic systems. The degree of pretreatment structural alterations in patients with ADHD may be an important factor in predicting methylphenidate treatment outcomes. The present study examined whether pretreatment volumetric alterations in the subcortical and dopaminergic regions predicted treatment response in youth with ADHD. Methods: This study included 67 youth with ADHD and 25 healthy controls. Youth with ADHD received 8 weeks of methylphenidate treatment. They completed baseline (pretreatment) 7-weighted structural MRI scans and underwent clinical assessments before and after methylphenidate treatment. The healthy controls also completed baseline structural MRI scans. We assessed volumetric alterations using relative volumes (volume of each region of interest/intracranial volume). Results: Among 67 youth with ADHD, 44 were treatment responders and 23 were nonresponders based on post-treatment scores on the Clinical Global Impression Scale-Improvement. Nonresponders had larger volumes in the bilateral amygdala and right thalamus than responders. Nonresponders also had larger volumes in amygdalar subregions (i.e., the bilateral lateral nucleus and right basal nucleus) and hippocampal subregions (i.e., the right hippocampal head and right molecular layer) relative to responders. Limitations: We did not collect post-treatment structural 7,-weighted images, so volumetric changes related to methylphenidate treatment in youth with ADHD were undetermined. Conclusion: These findings suggest that pretreatment volumetric alterations in subcortical regions may serve as biomarkers for predicting methylphenidate treatment response in youth with ADHD.

Background: Foot ulcers are a major complication of diabetes mellitus that increase morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes, affect their quality of life, and increase the overall social burden. A considerable number of patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) require amputations every year. Methods: This nation population–based study included 1 923 483 patients with diabetes who underwent regular health screening through the National Health Insurance Service during January 2009 and December 2012. We investigated the association between changes in physical activity (PA) status and the incidence of lower extremity amputation (LEA). Based on changes in PA status, participants were categorized into four groups: "remained inactive," "remained active," "active‐to‐inactive," and "inactive‐to‐active." Results: Regular PA is an independent factor associated with a decreased risk of LEA in patients with diabetes. During the follow‐up period, 0.23% (n = 4454) of the patients underwent LEA. Compared with the "remained inactive" group, the "remained active" group were at the lowest risk of LEA (adjusted hazard ratio 0.5888; 95% confidence interval 0.524–0.66). A protective effect of regular PA against LEA was observed in the "remaining active" group. Conclusions: Our findings suggest a protective role of PA against LEA in individuals with diabetes. This highlights the importance of recommending appropriate levels of PA for patients with diabetes. The study also showed a dose–response relationship, indicating that engaging in vigorous‐intensity PA was most beneficial, and higher amounts of PA may provide additional benefits. Agastache rugosa, a traditional Asian herbal medicine, is primarily used for digestive problems; yet, its cognitive benefits remain unexplored. This study evaluated the anti-amnesic effects of A. rugosa extract (ARE) on scopolamine (SCO)-induced memory impairment in mice. Mice received 100 or 200 mg/kg ARE orally for 5 days, followed by SCO injection. The ARE demonstrated significant antioxidant (DPPH IC50: 75.3 µg/mL) and anti-inflammatory effects (NO reduction). Furthermore, the ARE significantly improved memory performance in the passive avoidance test (escape latency: 157.2 s vs. 536.9 s), the novel object recognition test (novel object preference: 47.6% vs. 66.3%) and the Morris water maze (time spent in the target quadrant: 30.0% vs. 45.1%). The ARE reduced hippocampal acetylcholinesterase activity (1.8-fold vs. 1.1-fold) while increasing choline acetyltransferase (0.4-fold vs. 1.0-fold) and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype I (0.3-fold vs. 1.6-fold) expression. The ARE improved hippocampal neurogenesis via doublecortin- (0.4-fold vs. 1.1-fold) and KI-67-positive (6.3 vs. 12.0) cells. Therefore, the ARE exerts protective effects against cognitive decline through cholinergic system modulation and antioxidant activity, supporting its potential use as a cognitive enhancer. To evaluate the efficacy of human placenta hydrolysate (HPH) in a mice model of CFA-induced inflammatory pain. TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 are key pro-inflammatory cytokine factors for relieving inflammatory pain. Therefore, this study investigates whether HPH suppresses CFA-induced pain and attenuates the inflammatory process by regulating cytokines. In addition, the relationship between neuropathic pain and HPH was established by staining GFAP and Iba-1 in mice spinal cord tissues. This study was conducted for a total of day 28, and inflammatory pain was induced in mice by injecting CFA into the right paw at day 0 and day 14, respectively. 100 μL of 20% glucose and polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) and 100, 200, and 300 μL of HPH were administered intraperitoneally twice a week. In the CFA-induced group, cold and mechanical allodynia and pro-inflammatory cytokine factors in the spinal cord and plantar tissue were significantly increased. The five groups of drugs evenly reduced pain and gene expression of inflammatory factors, and particularly excellent effects were confirmed in the HPH 200 and 300 groups. Meanwhile, the expression of GFAP and Iba-1 in the spinal cord was increased by CFA administration but decreased by HPH administration, which was confirmed to suppress damage to peripheral ganglia. The present study suggests that HPH attenuates CFA-induced inflammatory pain through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine factors and protection of peripheral nerves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
