Aging and lack of exercise are the most important etiological factors for muscle loss. We hypothesized that new factors that contribute to muscle loss could be identified from ones commonly altered in expression in aged and exercise-limited skeletal muscles. Mouse gastrocnemius muscles were subjected to mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis. The muscle proteomes of hindlimb-unloaded and aged mice were compared to those of exercised and young mice, respectively. C1qbp expression was significantly upregulated in the muscles of both hindlimb-unloaded and aged mice. In vitro myogenic differentiation was not affected by altering intracellular C1qbp expression but was significantly suppressed upon recombinant C1qbp treatment. Additionally, recombinant C1qbp repressed the protein level but not the mRNA level of NFATc1. NFATc1 recruited the transcriptional coactivator p300, leading to the upregulation of acetylated histone H3 levels. Furthermore, NFATc1 silencing inhibited p300 recruitment, downregulated acetylated histone H3 levels, and consequently suppressed myogenic differentiation. The expression of C1qbp was inversely correlated with that of NFATc1 in the gastrocnemius muscles of exercised or hindlimb-unloaded, and young or aged mice. These findings demonstrate a novel role of extracellular C1qbp in suppressing myogenesis by inhibiting the NFATc1/p300 complex. Thus, C1qbp can serve as a novel therapeutic target for muscle loss. Abstract\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe increasing prevalence of mobility impairments underscores the urgent need for accessible and affordable mobility aids. To overcome the mobility limitations of people with disabilities, there is an increasing need for the development of lightweight and portable powered wheelchairs that can be easily loaded. This study aimed to perform an early health technology assessment and a formative usability evaluation on a modular (detachable) powered wheelchair. It aimed to gauge device satisfaction among users, pinpoint areas for improvement, and detect any unforeseen errors to inform future development. Engaging 16 participants, including powered wheelchair users, healthcare professionals, and caregivers, the research evaluated the wheelchair’s functionality in various scenarios, emphasizing safety, effectiveness, and convenience. Statistical analyses of task performance and satisfaction surveys highlighted that, while powered wheelchair users successfully completed tasks focusing on driving and power control, healthcare professionals and caregivers encountered difficulties with the wheelchair’s assembly and disassembly. Despite general positivity, the surveys indicated mixed satisfaction levels regarding safety, validity, and convenience, with specific issues related to frame durability, seat comfort, and control mechanisms. These findings suggest that refining the wheelchair’s design and addressing user concerns could significantly enhance satisfaction and mobility services. Introduction: Physical activity is associated with improved disease progression and cancer-specific survival in patients with prostate cancer (PCa). However, the mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear, while the relative impact of exercise modes is unknown. This study aims to examine the differential impact of exercise mode on tumour-suppressive skeletal muscle-associated systemic molecules as well as their delivery mechanism. This study will compare the effects of the two main exercise modes, aerobic and resistance, on (1) circulatory myokine levels, (2) skeletal muscle-induced extracellular vesicle abundance and cargo contents, and (3) uptake of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in PCa cells in patients with localised or advanced PCa. Methods: A single-group cross-over design will be used for patients at opposite ends of the disease spectrum. A total of 32 patients (localised PCa, n = 16; metastatic castrate-resistant PCa, n = 16) will be recruited while capitalising on two ongoing studies. Ethics amendment has been approved for two ongoing trials to share data, implement the acute exercise sessions, and collect additional blood samples from patients. The patients will undertake two exercise sessions (aerobic only and resistance only) in random order one week apart. Blood will be collected before, after, and 30 min post-exercise. Circulating/EV-contained myokine levels (irisin, IL-6, IL-15, FGF-21, and SPARC) and plasma skeletal muscle-induced EVs will be measured using ELISA and flow cytometry. PCa cell line growth with or without collected plasma will be examined using PCa cell lines (LNCaP, DU-145, and PC-3), while evaluating cellular uptake of EVs. Ethics amendments have been approved for two capitalising studies to share data, implement acute exercise sessions and collect additional samples from the patients. Discussion: If findings show a differential impact of exercise mode on the establishment of an anti-cancer systemic environment, this will provide fundamental knowledge for developing targeted exercise prescriptions for patients with PCa across different disease stages. Findings will be reported in peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences, in addition to working with national support groups to translate findings for the broader community. Normalized signal intensity (SI) obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to track anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) postoperative remodeling. We aimed to assess the effect of MRI sequence (PD: proton density‐weighted; T2: T2‐weighted; CISS: constructive interference in steady state) on postoperative changes in healing ACLs/grafts. We hypothesized that CISS is better at detecting longitudinal SI and texture changes of the healing ACL/graft compared to the common clinical sequences (PD and T2). MR images of patients who underwent ACL surgery were evaluated and separated into groups based on surgical procedure (Bridge‐Enhanced ACL Repair (BEAR; n = 50) versus ACL reconstruction (ACLR; n = 24)). CISS images showed decreasing SI across all timepoints in both the BEAR and ACLR groups (p < 0.01), PD and T2 images showed decreasing SI in the 6‐to‐12‐ and 12‐to‐24‐month postoperative timeframes in the BEAR group (p < 0.02), and PD images additionally showed decreasing SI between 6‐ and 24‐months postoperation in the ACLR group (p = 0.02). CISS images showed texture changes in both the BEAR and ACLR groups, showing increases in energy and decreases in entropy in the 6‐to‐12‐ and 6‐to‐24‐month postoperative timeframes in the BEAR group (p < $\lt $ 0.04), and increases in energy, decreases in entropy, and increases in homogeneity between 6 and 24 months postoperation in the ACLR group (p < 0.04). PD images showed increases in energy and decreases in entropy between 6‐ and 24‐months postoperation in the ACLR group (p < 0.008). Aims: To evaluate the effects of initiating sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on cardiorenal outcomes and mortality compared to dipeptidyl peptidase‐4 (DPP‐4) inhibitors as active comparators in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a history of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Materials and Methods: We used an active‐comparator, new‐user design and nationwide data from the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea from 2014 to 2019. Of the 56 392 patients who underwent PCI, 4610 new SGLT2 inhibitor users were paired 1:1 with DPP‐4 inhibitor users for analysis using propensity‐score matching. Results: During 13 708.59 person‐years of follow‐up, the initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors, compared with the initiation of DPP‐4 inhibitors, was associated with a significantly lower risk of composite repeat revascularization, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure (HF), all‐cause death and end‐stage renal disease (ESRD). The beneficial effects of SGLT2 inhibitor use were consistent with the components of stroke, HF, all‐cause death and ESRD. In the cohort that included health examination data, including anthropometric and metabolic factors, new use of SGLT2 inhibitors was associated with a significantly lower risk of HF (hazard ratio [HR] 0.574, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.36–0.915), all‐cause death (HR 0.731, 95% CI 0.567–0.942), and ESRD (HR 0.076, 95% CI 0.018–0.319). The effects of SGLT2 inhibitor use were consistent regardless of the timing of the previous PCI. Conclusions: The initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of PCI was significantly associated with a reduced risk of cardiorenal consequences and mortality, irrespective of time since the last PCI. Background: The operative outcomes of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) are challenged by high operative mortality and disabling complications. This study aimed to explore the baseline clinical, anatomical, and procedural risk factors that impact early and late outcomes following open repair of TAAAs. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 290 patients who underwent open repair of TAAAs between 1992 and 2020 at a tertiary referral center. Determinants of early mortality (within 30 days or in hospital) were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models, while those of overall follow-up mortality were explored using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and landmark analyses. Results: The rates of early mortality and spinal cord deficits were 13.1% and 11.0%, respectively, with Crawford extent II showing the highest rates. In the logistic regression models, older age (P < 0.001), high cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time (P < 0.001), and low surgical volume of the surgeon (P < 0.001) emerged as independent factors significantly associated with early mortality. During follow-up (median, 5.0 years; interquartile range, 1.1–7.6 years), 82 late deaths occurred (5.7%/patient-year). Cox proportional hazards models demonstrated that older age (P < 0.001) and low hemoglobin level (P = 0.032) were significant risk factors of overall mortality, while the landmark analyses revealed that the significant impacts of low surgical volume (P = 0.017), high CPB time (P = 0.002), and Crawford extent II (P = 0.017) on mortality only remained in the early postoperative period, without significant late impacts (all P > 0.05). Conclusion: There were differential temporal impacts of perioperative risk variables on mortality in open repair of TAAAs, with older age and low hemoglobin level having significant impacts throughout the postoperative period, and low surgical volume, high CPB time, and Crawford extent II having impacts in the early postoperative phase. Background Objectives Animals Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Importance Romiplostim, a thrombopoietin analog, is commonly used to treat immune‐mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) in humans, but its use in dogs remains limited.Evaluate the effects and adverse events of romiplostim administration in dogs with thrombocytopenia caused by various underlying diseases.Forty‐two client‐owned dogs with naturally occurring thrombocytopenia at 2 referral animal hospitals.Retrospective, multi‐institutional analysis to evaluate the outcomes of romiplostim treatment in dogs.Among the dogs treated with romiplostim, 27 experienced an increase in platelet count and 26 maintained a platelet count within the reference range. Platelet count improvement was observed in various conditions: primary ITP (90%, n = 18/20), pancytopenia of unknown etiology (42.9%, n = 3/7), chemotherapy‐induced thrombocytopenia (50%, n = 3/6), babesiosis (100%, n = 1/1), radiotherapy‐induced thrombocytopenia (0%, n = 0/1), and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (33.3%, n = 2/6). The median time for platelet recovery (>50 000/μL) after romiplostim administration was 4 days, and the median time for platelet count normalization was 7 days. Median hospitalization time for the improvement group (I) was 5 days. The survival‐to‐discharge rates were 85%, 40%, and 28.6% for dogs with primary ITP, secondary thrombocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia of unknown etiology, respectively.Romiplostim is a well‐tolerated and promising treatment for primary ITP in dogs, suggesting its potential as a valuable therapeutic option for dogs with thrombocytopenia caused by various underlying conditions. This study examined the performance of reversed Brayton cycle heat pumps to supply heat above 300 °C. The aim was to overcome the current temperature limitations faced by heat pump technology in industrial heat supply sectors by examining the viability of the reversed Brayton cycle. In particular, the effects of the operating conditions on the cycle performance, such as the waste and return heat temperatures, were analyzed through thermal performance analysis. The reversed Brayton cycle heat pumps showed improved performance over conventional vapor compression cycle heat pumps when a heat supply above 215 °C was required. Furthermore, integrating additional heat exchangers into the cycle configuration was proposed in this study as a method to enhance waste heat utilization and recover unused heat from industrial processes. By incorporating preheating and recuperated cycles, these modifications broaden the operational range under the same operating conditions. They also improve the coefficient of performance (COP) of the reference cycle by up to 23% and 27.4%, respectively. This study explored the potential of reversed Brayton cycle heat pumps to supply heat above 300 °C and provided fundamental guidelines for the efficient design and operation of reversed Brayton cycle heat pumps. Tissue‐mimicking phantoms are valuable tools that aid in improving the equipment and training available to medical professionals. However, current phantoms possess limited utility due to their inability to precisely simulate multiple physical properties simultaneously, which is crucial for achieving a system understanding of dynamic human tissues. In this work, novel materials design and fabrication processes to produce various tissue‐mimicking materials (TMMs) for skin, adipose, muscle, and soft tissue at a human scale are developed. Target properties (Young's modulus, density, speed of sound, and acoustic attenuation) are first defined for each TMM based on literature. Each TMM recipe is developed, associated mechanical and acoustic properties are characterized, and the TMMs are confirmed to have comparable mechanical and acoustic properties with the corresponding human tissues. Furthermore, a novel sacrificial core to fabricate a hollow, ellipsoid‐shaped bladder phantom complete with inlet and outlet tubes, which allow liquids to flow through and expand this phantom, is adopted. This dynamic bladder phantom with realistic mechanical and acoustic properties to human tissues in combination with the developed skin, soft tissue, and subcutaneous adipose tissue TMMs, culminates in a human scale torso tank and electro‐mechanical system that can be systematically utilized for characterizing various medical imaging devices. This paper presents the leakage characteristics of stepped labyrinth seals, considering the impact of rotation in the circumferential direction. Two types of casing, honeycomb and solid lands, were applied to the labyrinth seal, and a numerical study was performed with a wide operating range of the rotational speed, pressure ratio and clearance. The effect of the rotational speed on the sealing performance was analyzed for each clearance size through a parametric study. Regardless of the casing type, the flow function decreased as the rotational speed increased, and the smaller the clearance was, the more the leakage performance was affected by the rotation effect. In particular, it was confirmed that the honeycomb seal had a stronger tendency to decrease the flow function due to the rotation than the solid seal. The honeycomb seal allowed a larger leakage flow in comparison to the solid seal, and the rotational speed played an important role when the clearance was small or moderate. However, when the clearance became large, the leakage flow of the two seal types became almost the same, and the rotational effect became marginal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, pool boiling experiments were conducted using carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-Cu nanoparticle-coated porous surfaces. Applying a layer of CNTs-Cu nanoparticles on boiling surfaces resulted in the formation of porous structures, which led to a rise in the quantity of active nucleation sites. We fabricated three coated boiling test sections, namely 0.1CNTs-99.9Cu, 0.2CNTs-99.8Cu, and 0.3CNTs-99.7Cu in weight percentages. A bare copper surface and a surface coated only with Cu particles were tested as benchmarks. Distilled water was used in the pool boiling experiments. To investigate the bubble dynamics, a high-speed camera was employed, while scanning electron microscopy was utilized to analyze the morphologies of the surfaces that were coated. The objective of this research was to elucidate the impact of varying CNTs content on boiling inversion and pool boiling efficiency. Resveratrol and its derivative piceid exhibit a wide spectrum of health-promoting bioactivities. A resveratrol-enriched variety of Dongjin rice (DJ526) has been developed by transfection of a resveratrol biosynthesis gene, and increased resveratrol content has been confirmed in seeds following germination. In the current study, these resveratrol-enriched seeds were induced to produce callus, and callus extracts were evaluated for in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Callus cultures contained greater amounts of resveratrol and piceid than DJ526 seeds, and treatment with DJ526 callus extract significantly reduced the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of proinflammatory mediators nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 by RAW264.7 macrophages. The inflammation-related nuclear factor kappa B and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways were also inhibited in DJ526 callus extract-treated RAW264.7 cells, resulting in downregulation of proinflammatory factor genes COX-2, iNOS, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Expression of the LPS-binding toll-like receptor-4 was also markedly reduced in DJ526 callus extract-treated cells compared to DJ callus extract-treated cells. These findings demonstrate increased resveratrol and piceid content by callus culture of DJ526 rice seeds and the potent anti-inflammatory activity of resveratrol-enriched callus extract. Photoaging pigmentation conditions such as senile lentigo and melasma show epidermal melanogenic activity and dermal abnormalities, including collagen degradation. A dermal rejuvenation strategy with skin‐lightening therapy directly acting on melanocytes is suggested for photoaging pigmentation. This study investigates whether collagen biostimulation can result in skin lightening of photoaging skin. A split‐face clinical trial was conducted, involving 40 subjects with facial melasma and senile lentigo. Subjects received a poly‐DL‐lactic acid (PDLLA) treatment on one side of their face, whereas the contralateral side received a treatment of normal saline as a control. Assessments were scheduled every month after completing treatments for up to 3 months. Pigmentation was evaluated using the L* value as measured with a chromameter and by investigator global assessment scores (IGA). Subjects reported different outcomes in terms of overall skin quality, including pigmentation, wrinkles and elasticity. Skin biopsies were obtained before the treatment and 4 weeks after completing the treatment. Fontana‐Masson, Masson‐Trichrome and Verhoeff‐van Gieson staining, and fibroblast‐specific protein 1 (FSP1) immunostaining were conducted. The PDLLA treatment demonstrated significant improvements in the L* values and IGA scores from 8 weeks after the subject completed their treatments. These improvements were sustained over a 12‐week assessment period. The subjects reported substantial reductions in both pigmentation and wrinkle severity and elasticity throughout the assessment period. Fontana‐Masson staining showed a marked decrease in pigmentation upon a PDLLA injection compared to the baseline values. Increased immunogenicity of FSP1 and increases in collagen and elastic fibre staining were observed. This study demonstrated remarkable improvements in photoaging pigmentation along with collagen production with a collagen biostimulator. Background/Objectives: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a severe complication in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with catastrophic outcomes. The relationship between prolonged operative times and PJI remains debated. This meta-analysis investigated the link between prolonged operative times and the risk of PJI in primary TKA. Methods: A comprehensive search of the MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases was conducted to identify studies comparing the incidence of PJI in TKAs with prolonged versus short operative times, as well as those comparing operative times in TKAs with and without PJI. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) in operative times between groups with and without PJI or surgical site infections (SSI), including superficial SSIs and PJIs, were analyzed. Additionally, the pooled odds ratios (OR) for PJI in TKAs with operative times exceeding 90 or 120 min were examined. Results: Seventeen studies involving 427,361 patients were included. Significant differences in pooled mean operative times between the infected and non-infected TKA groups were observed (PJI, pooled SMD = 0.38, p < 0.01; SSI, pooled SMD = 0.72, p < 0.01). A higher risk of PJI was noted in surgeries lasting over 90 or 120 min compared to those of shorter duration (90 min, pooled OR = 1.50, p < 0.01; 120 min, pooled OR = 1.56, p < 0.01). Conclusions: An association between prolonged operative time and increased risk of PJI in primary TKA has been established. Capmatinib and savolitinib, selective MET inhibitors, are widely used to treat various MET-positive cancers. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of these inhibitors on MET-amplified gastric cancer (GC) cells. Methods: After screening 37 GC cell lines, the following cell lines were found to be MET-positive with copy number variation >10: SNU-620, ESO51, MKN-45, SNU-5, and OE33 cell lines. Next, we assessed the cytotoxic response of these cell lines to capmatinib or savolitinib alone using cell counting kit-8 and clonogenic cell survival assays. Western blotting was performed to assess the effects of capmatinib and savolitinib on the MET signaling pathway. Xenograft studies were performed to evaluate the in vivo therapeutic efficacy of savolitinib in MKN-45 cells. Savolitinib and capmatinib exerted anti-proliferative effects on MET-amplified GC cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Savolitinib inhibited the phosphorylation of MET and downstream signaling pathways, such as the protein kinase B (AKT) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathways, in MET-amplified GC cells. Additionally, savolitinib significantly decreased the number of colonies formed on the soft agar and exerted dose-dependent anti-tumor effects in an MKN-45 GC cell xenograft model. Furthermore, a combination of trastuzumab and capmatinib exhibited enhanced inhibition of AKT and ERK activation in human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2)- and MET-positive OE33 cells. Targeting MET with savolitinib and capmatinib efficiently suppressed the growth of MET-amplified GC cells. The effects of red light‐emitting diode (LED) light irradiation (630 nm, 0.5 W/m2) and melatonin (10−8 and 10−7 M) on oxidative stress and physiological responses in abalones exposed to high temperatures (28°C) were investigated. Changes in messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of melatonin receptor (MT‐R), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and antioxidant enzymes, as well as alterations in H2O2 levels in the hemolymph, were examined. The results revealed that high‐temperature‐stressed abalones treated with melatonin injections or exposed to red LED light showed a significant increase in MT‐R mRNA expression, while HSP70 mRNA expression decreased. Notably, HSP70 mRNA expression levels in the red LED light‐irradiated group were similar to those in the group injected with 10−8 M melatonin after 24 h exposure. Abalones treated with melatonin at 20°C or irradiated with red LED light exhibited decreased H2O2 levels and reduced antioxidant enzyme mRNA expression compared with those of the control group. However, the high‐temperature environment induced oxidative stress in abalones, leading to increased antioxidant enzyme mRNA expression compared with that under 20°C conditions. Moreover, abalones exposed to high‐temperature stress exhibited hepatopancreatic DNA damage, which was attenuated by melatonin treatment or red LED light irradiation. Hence, red LED light reduces oxidative stress, boosts antioxidant enzymes, and alleviates DNA damage in high‐temperature‐stressed abalones, akin to 10−8 M melatonin treatment. Therefore, considering the practical challenges of continuous melatonin administration to abalones, utilizing red LED light emerges as a practical, effective alternative to protect abalones from oxidative stress compared to 10−8 M melatonin treatment. This study aimed to compare the nanoleakage of retrograde fillings with premixed calcium silicate-based putty and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), using two different techniques (traditional and Lid). Sixty-four extracted human teeth were decoronated, then root canals and ends were instrumented for retrograde filling and divided into four groups according to the retrograde filling technique: the traditional and the Lid technique. Each group (n = 15) was filled with Ceraseal + Well-Root putty, Well-Root putty, Ceraseal + ProRoot MTA, and ProRoot MTA. The nanoleakage was evaluated using the Nanoflow device (IB Systems) on days 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30. Data were collected twice per second at the nanoscale (nL/s) and calculated after archiving the stabilization of fluid flow. The Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U-tests were used for statistical analysis. All groups showed enhanced sealing ability over time. Regardless of filling materials, the Well-Root putty, Ceraseal+Well-Root putty, and Ceraseal+ProRoot MTA groups indicated less nanoleakage than the ProRoot MTA group in the first week of evaluation (p < 0.05). Although all groups did not show significant differences after 2 weeks, the Ceraseal+ProRoot MTA group leaked less than ProRoot MTA on Days 3 and 7 (p < 0.05). The scanning electron microscopic examined good adaptation to the cavity wall, which was similar to nanoleakage results. Premixed calcium silicate-based putty retrograde filling material alone and using the "lid technique" were shown to be faster and less prone to nanoleakage when compared to MTA. Tomatoes contain many secondary metabolites such as β-carotene, lycopene, phenols, flavonoids, and vitamin C, which are responsible for antioxidant activity. SlSGR1 encodes a STAY-GREEN protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of chlorophyll degradation in tomato leaves and fruits. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the sgr1 null lines based on their physicochemical characteristics, the content of secondary metabolites, and the γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) content. The total soluble solids (TSS), titrated acidity (TA), and brix acid ratio (BAR) of the sgr1 null lines were higher than those of the wild type(WT). Additionally, the sgr1 null lines accumulated higher levels of flavor-inducing ascorbic acid and total carotenoids compared to WT. Also, the total phenolic content, total flavonoids, GABA content, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical content of the sgr1 null lines were higher than those of the WT. Therefore, these studies suggest that the knockout of the SGR1 gene by the CRISPR/Cas9 system can improve various functional compounds in tomato fruit, thereby satisfying the antioxidant properties required by consumers. Monoolein cubic phase incorporating poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-phenyl vinyl sulfide) (P(DMAEMA-co-PVS)) and indocyanine green (ICG, a photosensitizer) was prepared as a multiple-responsive carrier. P(DMAEMA-co-PVS), prepared by a free radical polymerization, was air/water interface-active and it exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The polymer increased in its LCST by H2O2 treatment, possibly because of the hydrolytic detachment of DMAEMA pendant, evidenced by 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Water channels surrounded by lipid matrix, characteristic of cubic phase, was observed on TEM photos and the inclusion of the additives (e.g., P(DMAEMA-co-PVS) had little effect on the structure. The cubic phases increased their thermal stability upon the inclusion of the polymer chains and they maintained their integrity once the temperature was kept below 60 °C, supported by the polarized optical microscopy and the differential scanning calorimetry. The release of a cargo (i.e., fluorescent dextran) was suppressed at body temperature (37 °C) at the H2O2 concentration of normal tissue (e.g., 0.000002%), possibly due to an entangled network structure formed by the thermally induced inter/intramolecular hydrophobic interaction of the polymer chains. The release was markedly promoted at the H2O2 concentration of tumor tissue (e.g., 0.0034%), possibly because the thermally induced hydrophobic interaction can be weakened by the hydrolytic degradation. In addition, the release was significantly enhanced by NIR irradiation. In this paper, we address scheduling methods for queue stabilization and appropriate power allocation techniques in downlink dense user-centric scalable cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (CF-MIMO) networks. Scheduling is performed by the central processing unit (CPU) scheduler using Lyapunov optimization for queue stabilization. In this process, the drift-plus-penalty is utilized, and the control parameter V serves as the weighting factor for the penalty term. The control parameter V is fixed to achieve queue stabilization. We introduce the dynamic V method, which adaptively selects the control parameter V considering the current queue backlog, arrival rate, and effective rate. The dynamic V method allows flexible scheduling based on traffic conditions, demonstrating its advantages over fixed V scheduling methods. In cases where UEs scheduled with dynamic V exceed the number of antennas at the access point (AP), the semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS) algorithm is employed to reschedule UEs with favorable channel conditions and orthogonality. Dynamic V shows the best queue stabilization performance across all traffic conditions. It shows a 10% degraded throughput performance compared to V = 10,000. Max-min fairness (MMF), sum SE maximization, and fractional power allocation (FPA) are widely considered power allocation methods. However, the power allocation method proposed in this paper, combining FPA and queue-based FPA, achieves up to 60% better queue stabilization performance compared to MMF. Thermoelectric materials are crucial components in thermoelectric devices employed for environmentally friendly solid‐state cooling and waste heat recovery, demanding not only high performance but also superior thermal or phase stability. The high‐performance thermoelectric material AgSbTe2 encounters challenges when utilized in thermoelectric modules due to the precipitation of Ag2Te, resulting in both thermally unstable characteristics and diminished performance. In this study, a thermal cycling process is employed to enhance the thermal stability and thermoelectric performance of AgSbTe2. Through thermal cycling, secondary phases of AgSbTe2 are made uniform, and the undesired Ag2Te is substituted with Sb2Te3 using an optimized thermal cycling process. As a result, the thermal stability of AgSbTe2 is enhanced due to its meta‐stable state, with <5% variance in thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) measurements, and the ZT value is raised from 0.8 to 1.7 at 643 K through the optimized thermal cycling. The findings indicate that thermal cycling is an effective strategy for enhancing the thermal stability and thermoelectric performance of AgSbTe2, presenting a novel approach for achieving uniform secondary phases in materials with phase separation or phase change characteristics. Pectin gel and retinyl palmitate (RP)-loaded monoolein (MO) cubic phases were prepared by a melt-hydration method as a salt-responsive and anti-oxidative vehicle. The pectin gel was formed maximally when CaCl2 concentration in aqueous pectin solution (0.25% to 2%) was 50 mM. The phase transition temperature (PTT) of the cubic phase, determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), decreased from 58 to 46.9 ℃ as the RP content increased from 0 to 1.5%. The maximum release degree at 22 ℃ of a dye (amaranth) loaded in a cubic phase was about 15.9% and 51.3%, respectively, when the release medium was deionized water and PBS (10 mM, pH 7.4). An ion exchange between Na+ and Ca2+ seemed to cause the extensive release in the saline. The in vitro radical scavenging capability (RSC) of RP loaded in the cubic phase was proportional to the RP concentration and the RSC was substantially higher than that of free RP. The double bond of MO contained in the cubic phases was chemically stable during 6 months storage at 25 ℃ and 40 ℃, evidenced by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Objectives To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumour thrombosis (PVTT) confined to a monosegment of the liver. Methods A total of 192 treatment-naive patients who received chemoembolization between March 2008 and January 2023 as a first-line treatment for locally advanced HCC with PVTT limited to a monosegment were retrospectively analysed. Overall survival (OS) and the identification of pretreatment risk factors related to OS were investigated using Cox regression analysis. Complications, radiologic tumour response, and progression-free survival (PFS) following chemoembolization were investigated. Results After chemoembolization, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 86%, 48%, and 39%, respectively, and the median OS was 33 months. Multivariable analyses revealed four significant pretreatment risk factors: infiltrative HCC (P  = .02; HR, 1.60), beyond the up-to-11 criteria (P  = .002; HR, 2.26), Child-Pugh class B (P  = .01; HR, 2.35), and serum AFP ≥400 ng/mL (P  = .01; HR, 1.69). The major complication rate was 5%. Of the 192 patients, 1 month after chemoembolization, 35% achieved a complete response, 47% achieved a partial response, 11% had stable disease, and 7% showed progressive disease. The median PFS after chemoembolization was 12 months. Conclusions Chemoembolization shows high safety and efficiency, and contributes to improved survival in patients with HCC with PVTT confined to a monosegment. Four risk factors were found to be significantly associated with improved survival rates after chemoembolization in patients with HCC with PVTT confined to a monosegment. Advances in knowledge (1) Although systemic therapy with a combination of atezolizumab and bevacizumab (Atezo-Bev) is recommended as the first-line treatment when HCC invades the portal vein, chemoembolization is not infrequently performed in HCC cases in which tumour burden is limited. STUDY QUESTION What are the characteristics of adolescents diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on the 2003 Rotterdam criteria, but who do not meet the diagnosis according to the international evidence-based guideline? SUMMARY ANSWER Adolescents who had features of PCOS but did not meet the evidence-based guideline adolescent criteria exhibited unfavorable metabolic profiles compared to controls and shared considerable metabolic and hormonal features with adolescents who did meet the adolescent criteria. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The international evidence-based PCOS guideline recommended that ultrasound should not be used for the diagnosis of PCOS in girls with a gynecological age of <8 years. Thus far, few studies have evaluated the clinical characteristics of the girls diagnosed with PCOS based on the Rotterdam criteria but who do not meet the diagnosis according to the updated guideline. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This is a retrospective study, and subjects attended for care from 2004 to 2022. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Adolescent girls with PCOS diagnosed according to the 2003 Rotterdam criteria and healthy controls. All participants were between 2 and 8 years since menarche. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Of the 315 girls diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria, those with irregular menstruation (IM)/hyperandrogenism (HA)/polycystic ovary (PCO), IM/HA, HA/PCO, and IM/PCO phenotypes accounted for 206 (65.4%), 30 (9.5%), 12 (3.8%), and 67 (21.3%) participants, respectively. According to the evidence-based guideline, 79 girls (25.1%) with the HA/PCO or IM/PCO phenotypes were not diagnosed with PCOS, and aligned to the international guideline; they were designated as the 'at-risk' group. As expected, the girls meeting the evidence-based guideline adolescent criteria showed the worst metabolic profiles (degree of generalized or central obesity, frequency of insulin resistance, prediabetes or diabetes, and metabolic syndrome) and higher hirsutism scores than the at-risk group or controls. Approximately 90% of the at-risk group were not overweight or obese, which was similar to the controls. However, they showed worse metabolic profiles, with higher blood pressure, triglyceride, and insulin resistance parameters than controls; furthermore, these profiles were similar to those of the girls meeting the adolescent criteria. The at-risk group showed similarly elevated serum LH levels and LH/FSH ratio with the girls meeting adolescent criteria. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION We could not evaluate hormonal or ultrasound parameters in controls. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Compared to the conventional Rotterdam criteria, the recent international evidence-based guideline—avoiding ultrasound in PCOS diagnosis in adolescents—still gives the opportunity to identify young girls at risk, aligned to the findings in this study. A practical approach to this adolescent population would involve establishing IM or HA (with ultrasound not indicated) and designating 'at-risk' PCOS status with regular check-ups for newly developed or worsening PCOS-related symptoms or metabolic abnormalities, with subsequent reassessment including ultrasound or anti-Müllerian hormone, once 8 years post-menarche. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) use multiple channels to communicate using wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE) standards to provide a variety of vehicle-related applications. The current IEEE 802.11p WAVE communication channel structure is composed of one control channel (CCH) and several service channels (SCHs). SCHs are used for non-safety data transmission, while the CCH is used for broadcasting beacons, control, and safety. WAVE devices transmit data that alternate between CCHs and SCHs, and each channel is active for a duration called the CCH interval (CCHI) and SCH interval (SCHI), respectively. Currently, both intervals are fixed at 50 ms. However, fixed-length intervals cannot effectively respond to dynamically changing traffic loads. Additionally, when many vehicles are simultaneously using the limited channel resources for data transmission, the network performance significantly degrades due to numerous packet collisions. Herein, we propose an adaptive resource allocation technique for efficient data transmission. The technique dynamically adjusts the SCHI and CCHI to improve network performance. Moreover, to reduce data collisions and optimize the network's backoff distribution, the proposed scheme applies reinforcement learning (RL) to provide an intelligent channel access algorithm. As a promising technology, refractive index (RI) sensing has been developed for biosensing and chemosensing applications as well as for multiple industrial applications. Nevertheless, conventional RI sensors are confined by their operating principle or detection devices in terms of high sensitivity or a wide detection range. This study experimentally demonstrates metasurface-based spectrometer-free RI sensing through a spatial weighted variance (SWV)-based analysis of metasurface-generated vortex beams. The proposed liquid-immersed metasurface device creates a focused vortex beam at a single wavelength of 1550 nm, whose focusing effect varies according to the surrounding medium. The images, captured by a position-fixed near-infrared camera, exhibit divergent beam profiles determined by certain RI values. The SWV is used to assess the degree of divergence and is calculated based on the recorded beam images to quantify the variation of the RI. Thus, the proposed RI sensing scheme concurrently achieves high sensitivity (113 598/RIU), wide detection range (1.3164–1.3825), and high resolution (8.8 × 10−6 RIU). The proposed image-based spectrometer-less RI sensing methods overcome the constraints of instruments that are unavoidable in conventional detection techniques. Objective: To explore whether early physical interventions, including neuromuscular retraining therapy, can minimize excessive movement or any unwanted co-contraction after a severe Bell's palsy. Data sources: From March 2021 to August 2022, the therapist treated Bell's palsy patients for the acute (<3 months, Group A), subacute (3–6 months, Group B) and chronic (> 6 months, Group C) stages of the condition. Methods: We explored whether early physical interventions, including neuromuscular retraining therapy, can minimize facial synkinesis after a severe episode of Bell's palsy. Each patient was informed about the potential for synkinesis and the therapist explained that the main purpose of neuromuscular retraining therapy is to learn new patterns to minimize synkinesis. The facial function of Group A was compared to that of Groups B and C using the 'Synkinesis' scale of the Sunnybrook Facial Grading System. Results: The final facial function score after neuromuscular retraining therapy was significantly associated with both the initial electroneuronographic degeneration rate and initial facial function. Early therapy did not prevent synkinetic movement in 84.7% of the patients. But, there was a significant difference between patients who started early neuromuscular retraining therapy and other groups in final facial function. Conclusion: Synkinesis in Bell's palsy patients can be minimized if physiotherapy commences before synkinesis develops; appropriate neuromuscular retraining therapy timing is essential. A patient with sudden severe Bell's palsy should receive oral steroids as soon as possible, along with physical therapy (including neuromuscular retraining therapy) within 3 months, to minimize synkinesis just before synkinesis onset. Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are superior next-generation batteries compared to commercial lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) because of their gravimetric energy densities, which provide longer battery life in a lighter package. However, the biggest hurdle for commercializing LSBs is their poor long-term cycling performance, which stems from polysulfide shuttling. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach: the use of glutamine, an amino acid, as an electrolyte additive to increase the cycling stability. Due to its molecular structure containing amines, the formation of Li dendrites was obstructed by homogenizing the Li-ion flux to shield the exceedingly active Li surfaces with glutamine, thereby reducing the overvoltage during Li plating and stripping. Additionally, the redox reactions of lithium polysulfides were enhanced, which helped to alleviate the shuttling of lithium polysulfides. Camellia is an important plant genus that includes well-known species such as C. sinensis, C. oleifera, and C. japonica. The C. sinensis cultivar 'Sangmok', one of Korea's standard types of tea landraces, is a small evergreen tree or shrub. Genome annotation has shown that Korean tea plants have special and unique benefits and superior components, such as catechin. The genome of Camellia sinensis cultivar 'Sangmok' was assembled on the chromosome level, with a length of 2678.62 Mbp and GC content of 38.16%. Further, 15 chromosome-scale scaffolds comprising 82.43% of the assembly (BUSCO completeness, 94.3%) were identified. Analysis of 68,151 protein-coding genes showed an average of 5.003 exons per gene. Among 82,481 coding sequences, the majority (99.06%) were annotated by Uniprot/Swiss-Prot. Further analysis revealed that 'Sangmok' is closely related to C. sinensis, with a divergence time of 60 million years ago. A total of 3336 exclusive gene families in 'Sangmok' were revealed by gene ontology analysis to play roles in auxin transport and cellular response mechanisms. By comparing these exclusive genes with 551 similar catechin genes, 17 'Sangmok'-specific catechin genes were identified by qRT-PCR, including those involved in phytoalexin biosynthesis and related to cytochrome P450. The 'Sangmok' genome exhibited distinctive genes compared to those of related species. This comprehensive genomic investigation enhances our understanding of the genetic architecture of 'Sangmok' and its specialized functions. CRISPR/Cas9-based targeted gene editing has emerged as a versatile tool for deciphering gene function and improving traits in plants. However, this technique has not been applied to Zoysia japonica, a prominent warm-season turfgrass widely used for green spaces. Leaf senescence, a vital process affecting crop quality, occurs in Z. japonica during late growth, diminishing its aesthetic value and performance. In this study, we adeptly employed CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing to create Z. japonica exhibiting delayed leaf senescence by targeting the ZjEIN2 gene, a crucial regulator of ethylene-mediated senescence. Precise gene editing, which generated knockout mutations in ZjEIN2, led to delayed leaf senescence in both dark and ethylene treatment conditions. This provided strong evidence for ZjEIN2's role in leaf senescence regulation. These findings highlight the potential of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing as a biotechnological strategy to enhance anti-senescence traits in Z. japonica and potentially other crops. With the continuous development of global economic and trade activities, environmental problems have become an important factor restricting the sustainable development of all countries. How to realize the coordinated development of international trade and environmental protection has become a major issue facing the international community. Since China joined the WTO, its share of international trade has been increasing continuously. In order to deeply analyze the influence of international carbon emission trading policy on domestic carbon emissions, we use an input–output model and a GTAP analysis method to theoretically calculate the carbon emissions of the international trade of various departments in Shandong Province. At the same time, the implicit carbon emission index of various industries in 2022 is calculated through the direct energy consumption coefficient. The results show that there are significant differences in the impact of the carbon tariff system on different industries. In terms of the carbon emission index, the food processing industry showed a decrease of 18.99 Mt, while the implied carbon emission of the tobacco, textile and leather manufacturing industry reached 30.56 Mt due to the continuous expansion of trade scale. In contrast, the implied carbon emission level of the metal product processing industry reached 5.3 Mt, while the carbon emission of traditional trading industries such as coal mining was almost unaffected by international trade, and its carbon emission index reached the highest level of 5.89 in 2020. In terms of trade impact, high-trade industries such as the food processing industry are significantly affected by the carbon tariff policy, and their share has dropped from 5.89% to 3.95% in the past decade. The carbon emissions generated by GDP growth established by the GTAP model are more convincing. This model can directly reflect the energy efficiency of a region from the side. Based on the present situation of international trade, this paper analyzes the inequality of the current carbon tariff system, and puts forward some policies to optimize the energy structure to reduce carbon emissions and expand domestic demand to reduce the dependence on international trade. Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between urine albumin excretion (UAE) and retinal microvascular parameters assessed using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 180 patients with diabetes and 50 age-matched controls. Patients with diabetes were grouped according to the five-stage DR severity, combined with the presence of albuminuria. All subjects underwent 12×12mm2 field SS-OCTA. The foveal avascular zone metrics, vessel density, and capillary nonperfusion area (NPA) were quantified using a semi-automatic software algorithm on three different rectangular fields (3×3 mm2, 6×6 mm2, and 10×10 mm2). The correlations between albuminuria and the four OCTA parameters were analyzed. Results: A total of 105 subjects had normal UAE, and 75 subjects had albuminuria. Of the 102 subjects whose DR severity was higher than mild non-proliferative DR (NPDR), capillary NPA on the 3×3 mm2, 6×6 mm2, and 10×10 mm2 fields was significantly larger in the albuminuria group. None of the OCTA parameters were significantly different between the two groups in subjects with mild NPDR or without DR. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that an increase in NPA in the 6×6 mm2 and 10×10 mm2 fields was a significant risk factor for the presence of albuminuria (odds ratio = 1.92 and 1.35). Conclusion: An increase in capillary NPA was independently associated with albuminuria in patients with clinically significant DR levels. Purpose: Vitiligo is a disease of acquired depigmentation characterized by the destruction of melanocytes. A theoretical association between low level of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and vitiligo has been previously suggested. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of intramuscular injection of cholecalciferol with excimer laser compared with the excimer laser alone for vitiligo treatment. Methods: This study included 26 patients diagnosed with non‐segmental vitiligo and low serum 25(OH)D levels (<20 ng/mL). The participants were randomly divided into two groups through randomization. The treatment using a 308‐nm excimer laser was administered to both groups, and the study group additionally received cholecalciferol injection. Results: The Vitiligo Area Scoring Index (VASI) scores showed an 83.6% improvement over the initial score in the study group, whereas the control group showed a 54.7% improvement after 6 months of treatment. After 6 months of treatment, the study group showed a significantly higher proportion of patients who achieved VASI50 and VASI75 compared with the control group. Conclusion: Intramuscular injection of cholecalciferol can be a supplemental option for the treatment of vitiligo patients with vitamin D deficiency with excimer laser therapy. Objective Since vaccination for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been initiated, rare cases of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination-associated myocarditis (VAM) have been reported worldwide. This study aimed to report the short-term outcomes and the clinical presentation of VAM in South Korean adolescents. Methods In this prospective multicenter study across five tertiary hospitals in South Korea, patients aged 12 to 17 years with symptoms of VAM were included from October 18, 2021, to April 30, 2022. We performed laboratory tests, electrocardiography, chest radiography, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging studies on these patients. Results A total of 14 patients were diagnosed with VAM during the study period. The median age of the patients was 15.2 years (interquartile range [IQR], 14.6–15.9) and 11 patients (78.6%) were male. All patients had received a messenger RNA Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The median latent period from vaccination to symptom onset was 1 (range, 0–8; IQR, 0.8–3.5) day. Chest pain was the most common symptom (11/14, 78.6%), and the median duration of symptoms was 1 week. Except for one patient (7.1%) who was admitted to intensive care unit, most patients (13/14, 93.8%) had a minor and short clinical course without an intensive treatment including an immune modulator. Conclusion VAM in South Korean adolescents had self-limiting clinical courses as reported by previous studies. Despite the small number of cases, our findings, consistent with previous studies, revealed that East Asian adolescents might have a similar or even milder clinical course than adolescents of other ethnicities. BACKGROUND: The restoration and management of the uninvolved side have been emphasized to prevent a second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and to ensure that athletes return to sports after ACL reconstruction. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors influencing the single leg hop test (SLHT) and single leg vertical jump test (SLVJT) at 1 year postoperatively after ACL reconstruction in both the involved and uninvolved sides. METHODS: Ninety-four patients who underwent ACL reconstruction were assessed at 1 year postoperatively. Multiple regression models included eight independent variables with two dependent variables (SLHT and SLVJT.), each on the involved and uninvolved side. RESULTS: On the involved side, the Y balance test (YBT), extensor peak torque per body weight (PT/BW), Biodex balance system anteroposterior index (BBS-API), and sex accounted for 53.9% of the variance in SLHT (P = 0.002), and extensor PT/BW and YBT accounted for 26.3% of the variance in SLVJT (P = 0.027). On the uninvolved side, YBT, sex, age, BBS-API, and flexor PT/BW accounted for 47.0% of the variance in SLHT (P = 0.046), and flexor PT/BW, YBT, and age accounted for 44.9% of the variance in SLVJT (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Knee extensor strength on the involved side and flexor strength on the uninvolved side influence the two functional performance tests. Objectives: To compare the safety and efficacy of RFA for single HCCs ≤ 3 cm in subcapsular versus nonsubcapsular locations using a propensity score matched analysis. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included patients with solitary HCCs ≤ 3 cm in size who underwent percutaneous RFA from 2005 to 2015 as initial treatment at two large-volume liver centers. Patients were divided into two groups, consisting of those with subcapsular and nonsubcapsular tumor locations. Complications, local tumor progression (LTP), and overall survival (OS) were compared in these two groups before and after propensity score matching (PSM). Results: The study population consisted of 964 patients (712 men [74%]) of mean age 58.3 years. Of these 964 patients, 561 (58%) had nonsubcapsular and 403 (42%) had subcapsular HCCs. PSM generated 402 pairs of patients. Major complication rate was low, but significantly higher in the subcapscular group (p = 0.047). Rates of technical effectiveness in these two groups were 99% and 98%, respectively (p = 0.315). However, during follow-up, cumulative 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year LTP and OS rates did significantly differ in both entire and PSM cohorts, resulting in the latter 8%, 15%, 20%, and 26% in the nonsubcapsular group vs. 13%, 24%, 30%, and 31% in the subcapsular group (p = 0.015), and 99%, 91%, 80%, and 59% vs. 98%, 85%, 73%, and 50% in the two groups (p = 0.004), respectively. Conclusion: Rates of major complications, LTP, and OS differed significantly following first-line RFA treatment of single HCCs ≤ 3 cm in favor of the nonsubcapsular locations. Clinical relevance statement: This large-scale study provides evidence that radiofrequency ablation for small (≤ 3 cm) hepatocellular carcinomas is safer and more effective in nonsubcapsular location than in subcapsular location. This study proposes a slip prevention algorithm with a load angle controller to prevent the slip phenomenon in dual-rotor PM synchronous motor (DR-PMSM) drives. A DR-PMSM employs inherent magnetic coupling between the inner and outer rotors for power transmission. This structure may lead to slip and desynchronization between the inner and outer rotors at sudden load variations; therefore, a slip prevention algorithm is necessary to enhance its reliability. Conventional passive slip prevention algorithms may induce load angle oscillation around the critical load angle, which will result in desynchronization between the inner and outer rotors. The PI load angle controller proposed in this study can prevent slip and load angle oscillation near the critical angle. The effectiveness of the proposed slip prevention algorithm is verified through mathematical modeling and simulation with MATLAB/Simulink, as well as through an experiment on a horse-power DR-PMSM. Reducing the impedance of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) without power loss is crucial for enhancing its energy conversion efficiency and overall performance. In this paper, a novel signal management structure, based on a newly designed sliding‐mode TENG, aimed at effectively reducing impedance by converting narrow, instantaneous signals into broader ones is presented. This transformation is accomplished by adding a grounded electrode connected to a high‐inductive inductor and fine‐tuning the parasitic capacitance of the dielectric material. Utilizing a highly resistive material like P(VDF–TrFE), a significant improvement in the TENG's performance is achieved, resulting in an increase of output power to 0.352 mW and a decrease in impedance from 3.2 to 0.3 MΩ. This results in a threefold increase in charging speed, which can be attributed to the reduced charge loss and improved matching at lower impedance. Based on these promising findings, the enhanced TENG is successfully connected to power a system for electrochemical CO2 reduction for CO production. Melasma relapse is almost common after discontinuation of conventional treatment. Recent studies suggesting that photoaging dermis is the main pathomechanism of melasma, emphasize the dermal targeting therapy. We investigated maintenance effect of microneedling radiofrequency (RF) for melasma treatment. Subjects with melasma were administered oral tranexamic acid and triple combination cream for 2 months and a randomly assigned half face was treated with RF. After discontinuation of conventional therapy, the half face RF continued monthly over 6 months. Modified melasma area severity index (mMASI) score and L* value by a chromameter were collected monthly. Fifteen subjects were enrolled and eleven completed the 8-month study. At 2nd month of conventional therapy, all subjects showed improvement with a 64% reduction in mMASI score. With continuous RF treatment, the improvement was well maintained; whereas in untreated side, the Δ L* gradually decreased, returning to the baseline after the conventional therapy ended. The continuous microneedling RF therapy is beneficial in maintaining the conventional therapy of melasma suggesting the protective effect of dermal targeting therapy in melasma development. Fibrotic pulmonary sarcoidosis represents a distinct and relatively uncommon manifestation within the spectrum of sarcoidosis and has substantial morbidity and mortality. Due to the scarcity of research focused on this specific disease subtype, our current understanding of pathogenesis and optimal management remains constrained. This knowledge gap underscores the need for further investigation into areas such as targeted therapies, lung transplantation, and quality of life of patients with fibrotic pulmonary sarcoidosis. Chitosan (CTSN), a cationic biopolymer was used to prepare Ion pair self-assembly (IPSAM) with (phenylthio)acetic acid (PTA) as hydrophobic counter ion which is responsive to temperature and oxidation. The IPSAM was formed when the amino to carboxylic group molar ratio was 1/9 ~ 4/6. CTSN/PTA IPSAM was found as sphere-like nanoparticles whose diameter was 30–50 nm on TEM image. The ion pair showed the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) that increased with increasing PTA content and decreased when PTA of the ion pair was oxidized by H2O2. The ion pair exhibited amphiphilic property which was responsible for interface activity which decline upon the oxidation of the PTA. The surface tension was low for the ratio of CTSN/PTA (3/7), which made the 3/7 ratio suitable for further studies. The ionic interaction between CTSN and PTA and the oxidation of PTA were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The payload's release (i.e. Nile red) in IPSAM was constrained below the UCST but it was prompted above the phase transition temperature possibly due to the disassembly of the IPSAM and PTA oxidation. This study aimed to analyze cases of anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap used for hand reconstruction with terminal perforator-to-digital artery anastomosis. Patients who underwent ALT free flap placement with terminal perforator-to-digital artery anastomosis for hand reconstruction between January 2011 and August 2021 were included. The number, length, and diameter of the perforators and veins, flap size, and operative time were investigated through a retrospective review of charts and photographs. The occurrences of arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis, arterial spasm, and flap necrosis were analyzed. In total, 50 patients were included in this study. The mean diameter and length of the perforators were 0.68 mm and 3.25 cm, respectively, and the mean number of veins anastomosed was 1.88, with a mean diameter of 0.54 mm. Complications included four cases of arterial thrombosis, one case of venous thrombosis, seven cases of partial necrosis, and one case of total flap failure. Regression analysis showed that a longer perforator was associated with arterial thrombosis whereas larger flap size and number of anastomosed veins were associated with partial necrosis (p < 0.05). The terminal perforator-to-digital artery anastomosis offers advantages in using compact free flaps with short pedicle lengths to cover small hand defects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Skin defects in the hands are common injuries, and autologous skin grafting is the ideal treatment. However, complications can occur at the donor and recipient sites. This study compares the "Swing-door" technique with conventional skin grafting. Methods From August 2019 to February 2023, 19 patients with skin defects of hand underwent the "Swing-door" split-thickness skin graft (STSG) technique. The thin epithelial layer was elevated with proximal part attached. Skin graft was harvested beneath. Donor site was then closed with epithelial flap like a "Swing-door". The outcomes were evaluated in terms of healing time, scar formation, and pain at the donor and recipient sites. The data were compared with the conventional STSG. Results The "Swing-door" group had lower graft take percentages, but complications did not significantly differ between the two groups. The "Swing-door" technique resulted in better cosmetic outcomes, as evidenced by lower Vancouver Scar Scale scores, faster donor site epithelialization, and reduced pain and discomfort during the early postoperative period, as measured by Visual Analog Scale. Introduction: Sarcopenia is a key predictor of prognosis in patients with hip fractures. This study utilized computed tomography (CT) scan (1) to determine the association between psoas muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and mortality, along with other muscles, and (2) to confirm the correlation between muscle CSA and appendicular lean mass (ALM) measured using DXA in elderly patients with hip fracture. Materials and methods: Patients who were aged ≥ 50 years and underwent surgical treatment for hip fracture were eligible for this study. After a series of exclusion criteria, 217 female patients were included. Patient data, including clinical characteristics, such as body mass index (BMI), CSA, and ALM, were retrospectively collected. The Kaplan–Meier survival method and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were used for the statistical analyses. The correlation between CSA/BMI and ALM was also assessed. Results: Patients in the lowest quartile of psoas muscle CSA/BMI had shorter survival times than those in the other quartiles. When the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was adjusted for multiple variables, the lowest quartile of the CSA/BMI of the psoas was a risk factor for mortality. The CSA/BMI of the psoas showed the highest correlation coefficient. The CSA/BMI ratio of the other muscles showed a moderately positive correlation with ALM. Conclusion: The CSA of the psoas is associated with prognosis in elderly patients with hip fractures and shows a moderately positive correlation with ALM. In recent years, the importance and severity of weather-related disasters have escalated, attributed to rising temperatures and the occurrence of extreme weather events due to global warming. The focus of disaster management has shifted from crisis management (e.g., repairing and recovering from damage caused by natural disasters) to risk management (e.g., prediction and preparation) while concentrating on early warning, thanks to the development of media and communication conditions. The Rural Development Administration (Korea) has developed the "early warning service for weather risk management in the agricultural sector" that detects weather risks for crops from high-resolution weather information in advance and provides customized information to respond to possible disaster risks in advance in response to the increasing number of extreme weather events. The core technology of this service is damage prediction technology that determines the overall agricultural weather risk level by quantifying the current growth stage of cultivated crops and the probability of possible weather disasters according to the weather conditions of the farm. Agrometeorological disasters are damages caused by weather conditions that can affect crops and can be predicted by estimating the probability of damage that may occur from the interaction between hazardous weather and crop characteristics. This review introduces the classification of possible weather risks by their occurrence mechanisms, based on the developmental stage of crops and prediction techniques that have been developed or applied to date. The accumulated crop growth and weather risk information is expected to be utilized as support material for farming decision-making, which helps farmers proactively respond to crop damage due to extreme weather events by providing highly reliable disaster forecasts through the advancement of prediction technology. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of repeated detection of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on the incidence risk of type 2 diabetes in young adults. Materials and Methods: In this nationwide population‐based observational study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, approximately 1 125 015 young adults aged 20‐39 years who underwent health screening four times between 2009 and 2013 were included. NAFLD was defined as a fatty liver index (FLI) of ≥60. Repeated detection of NAFLD scores was defined as the number of times the participants met the criteria for NAFLD (0‐4). To account for the degree of repeated detection of NAFLD, weighted repeated NAFLD scores were scaled as a sum by assigning points (0 points for FLI <30, 1 point for 30 ≤ FLI < 60, and 2 points for FLI ≥60) ranging from 0 to 8 points. Results: The multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratios of type 2 diabetes associated with repeated detection of NAFLD scores of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 2.74 (95% confidence interval 2.57‐2.921), 3.45 (3.221‐3.694), 4.588 (4.303‐4.892) and 6.126 (5.77‐6.504), respectively. The incidence risk of type 2 diabetes increased significantly with repeated detection of the NAFLD score. In the analysis of the weighted repeated NAFLD score, the hazard ratios for the incidence of type 2 diabetes showed a significant continuous positive linear association with increasing scores. Conclusions: Repeated detection of NAFLD influenced the incidence risk of type 2 diabetes in young adults, and a higher degree of repeated detection of NAFLD was independently associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in young adults. The terrestrial ecosystem in East Asia mainly consists of semi-arid regions that are sensitive to climate change. Therefore, gross primary productivity (GPP) in East Asia could be highly variable and vulnerable to climate change, which can significantly affect the local carbon budget. Here, we examine the spatial and temporal characteristics of GPP variability in East Asia and its relationship with climate factors over the last three decades. We detect an abrupt decrease in GPP over Eastern China-Mongolia region around the year 2000. This is attributed to an abrupt decrease in precipitation associated with the phase shift of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). We also evaluate the reproducibility of offline land surface models to simulate these abrupt changes. Of the twelve models, eight were able to simulate this abrupt response, while the others failed due to the combination of an exaggerated CO2 fertilization effect and an underrated climate impact.
