This study developed an innovative active vibration canceling (AVC) system designed to mitigate non-periodic vibrations during road driving to enhance passenger comfort. The macro-fiber composite (MFC) used in the system is a smart material that is flexible, soft, lightweight, and applicable in many fields as a dual-purpose sensor and actuator. The target vibrations are road vibration data that were collected while driving on standard urban (Seoul) and highway roads at 40 km/s. To predict and cancel the target vibration accurately before passing it, we modeled the vibration prediction algorithm using a long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM RNN). We regenerated vibrations on Seoul and highway roads at 40 km/s using MFCs and measured the displacements of the measured, predicted, and AVC vibrations of each road condition. To evaluate the vibration, we computed the root mean squared error (RMSE) and compared standard deviation (SD) values. The accuracies of LSTM RNN vibration prediction algorithms are 97.27% and 96.36% on Seoul roads and highway roads, respectively, at 40 km/s. Although the vibration ratio compared with the AVC results are different, there was no difference between the values of the AVC vibrations. This study focuses on addressing the issue of unwanted vibrations commonly encountered in various fields by designing an Active Vibration Cancellation (AVC) structure using a flexible piezoelectric composite material macro fiber composite (MFC). A comparative performance analysis was conducted between the AVC and a traditional passive gel that continuously absorbs vibrations. The results showed that AVC was more effective in mitigating vibrations, making it a promising solution for vibration control. The results of this study from extensive vibration–sensing experiments and comparisons revealed that AVC effectively cancels the vibrations and vibration absorption performance of the passive gel. These findings underline the potential of AVC as an efficient method for eliminating and managing undesired vibrations in practical applications. Specifically, AVC demonstrated a high vibration cancellation ratio of approximately 0.96 at frequencies above 10 Hz. In contrast, passive gel exhibited a relatively consistent vibration absorption ratio, approximately 0.70 to 0.75 at all tested frequencies. These quantitative findings emphasize the superior performance of AVC in reducing vibrations to levels below a certain threshold, demonstrating its efficacy for vibration control in real-world scenarios. Smart wearable sensors are increasingly integrated into everyday life, interfacing with the human body to enable real-time monitoring of biological signals. This study focuses on creating high-sensitivity capacitive-type sensors by impregnating polyester-based 3D spacer fabric with a Carbon Nanotube (CNT) dispersion. The unique properties of conductive particles lead to nonlinear variations in the dielectric constant when pressure is applied, consequently affecting the gauge factor. The results reveal that while the fabric without CNT particles had a gauge factor of 1.967, the inclusion of 0.04 wt% CNT increased it significantly to 5.210. As sensor sensitivity requirements vary according to the application, identifying the necessary CNT wt% is crucial. Artificial intelligence, particularly the Multilayer Perception (MLP) model, enables nonlinear regression analysis for this purpose. The MLP model created and validated in this research showed a high correlation coefficient of 0.99564 between the model predictions and actual target values, indicating its effectiveness and reliability. The Optimism and Humor Training Program (OHTP) developed to increase optimism and adaptive use of humor for elementry students. Two sixth grade classrooms participated, and the program was implemented in one class (n = 23) over 8 weeks. The effectiveness of the program was tested by Analysis of Covariance. With the continuous reduction in size and increase in density of semiconductor devices, there is a growing demand for contact solutions that enable high-speed testing in automotive, 5G, and artificial intelligence-based devices. Although existing solutions, such as spring pins and rubber sockets, have been effective in various applications, there is still a need for new solutions that accommodate fine-pitch, high-speed, and high-density requirements. This study proposes a novel three-dimensional microelectromechanical system spring structure coaxial socket for semiconductor chip package testing. The socket design incorporates impedance matching for high-speed testing and addresses the challenges of fine-pitch and high-density applications. Mechanical tests are conducted to evaluate the durability of the structure and electrical tests are performed to verify electrical characteristics by utilizing a vector network analyzer up to 60 GHz. Summary: Purpose: Cerebral cortical dysplasia (CD) is one of the important causes of intractable epilepsies and characterized histologically by disorganized cortical lamination and cytomegalic dysplastic neurons. Although it has been suggested that neurotrophins play an important role in differentiation, growth, and survival of developmental neurons, their pathogenetic role in CD has rarely been investigated. Methods: To know the pathogenetic role of various neurotrophins on dysplastic neurons, immunohistochemical staining was performed using antibodies against NGFRp75, trkA, trkB, and trkC in surgical specimens of 20 patients with CD. Results: TrkB and trkC were strongly expressed in dysplastic neurons of severe CD, and NGFRp75 was also expressed in some dysplastic neurons. Conclusions: It is known that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) contribute to the differentiation of neuronal precursor cells, dendritic and axonal arborization, synaptic plasticity, and cellular hyperexcitability, so increased expression of trkB and trkC may have a critical pathogenetic role in cytoskeletal abnormalities and epileptogenicity in dysplastic neurons of CD. Quadruple sectoranopia (QSA) has been attributed to anterior choroidal artery infarction affecting the lateral geniculate body. We report a case of QSA caused by posterior cerebral artery infarction in a patient having migraine without aura and suggest that QSA is not always diagnostic of a lesion in the lateral geniculate body in the territory of anterior choroidal artery. The wrist is one of the most complex joints in our body, composed of eight bones. Therefore, measuring the angles of this intricate wrist movement can prove valuable in various fields such as sports analysis and rehabilitation. Textile stretch sensors can be easily produced by immersing an E-band in a SWCNT solution. The lightweight, cost-effective, and reproducible nature of textile stretch sensors makes them well suited for practical applications in clothing. In this paper, wrist angles were measured by attaching textile stretch sensors to an arm sleeve. Three sensors were utilized to measure all three axes of the wrist. Additionally, sensor precision was heightened through the utilization of the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) technique, a subtype of deep learning. Rather than fixing the measurement values of each sensor to specific axes, we created an algorithm utilizing the coupling between sensors, allowing the measurement of wrist angles in three dimensions. Using this algorithm, the error angle of wrist angles measured with textile stretch sensors could be measured at less than 4.5°. Life assessment predictions of reformer tubes of HP40Nb grade steel used in the petrochemical industry were investigated by quantitative metallographic evaluations of the area fractions of precipitated carbides. Correlations were established between the field-service periods and area fractions of the carbides via microstructural analysis. The microstructures of the virgin and other tubes were examined using optical microscopy (OM) for service periods of 1.8, 6.0, 7.2, 8.5, 9.7, and 16.2 years at 950 °C. The area fractions of the precipitates were measured by image analysis using ImageJ software. The results showed that increase in the area fractions of the precipitates was almost proportional to increase their service times. The relationships between area fractions of the precipitates and service times were also discussed for a 6-year cracked tube and a tube that had been in service for 11.5 years at another furnace. In the present work, several specimens were obtained from microalloyed HP40Nb reformer tubes with the different serviced period. The creep tests were conducted at a temperature of 950 °C and under stress levels in the range 25–55 MPa. Results indicated that the degradation of the creep life was due to the increase of the serviced period. The microstructural degradation and creep voids were observed at the grain boundary regions, attributed to the main reason leading to the premature creep failure. The creep exponent started decreasing after the servicing and approached a constant value after 7.2 years. The creep coefficient was obtained to be a function of time when the creep exponent was constant. Norton's creep power law equation was used to derive an equation describing the relationship between the diametrical expansion and serviced period of the reformer tubes. Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) in older adults is a very serious complication. Due to the complexity of too many risk factors (RFs), an overall assessment of RFs may be needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate comprehensively the RFs of POD regardless of the organ undergoing operation, efficiently incorporating the concept of comprehensive big data using a smart clinical data warehouse (CDW).Methods: We reviewed the electronic medical data of inpatients aged 65 years or older who underwent major surgery between January 2010 and June 2016 at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital. The following six major operation types were selected: cardiac, stomach, colorectal, hip, knee, and spine. Clinical features, laboratory findings, perioperative variables, and medication history were compared between patients without POD and with POD.Results: Six hundred eighty-six of 3634 patients (18.9%) developed POD. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, common, independent RFs of POD were as follows (descending order of odds ratio): operation type ([hip] OR 8.858, 95%CI 3.432-22.863; p = 0.000; [knee] OR 7.492, 95%CI 2.739-20.487; p = 0.000; [spine] OR 6.919, 95%CI 2.687-17.815; p = 0.000; [colorectal] OR 2.037, 95%CI 0.784-5.291; p = 0.144; [stomach] OR 1.500, 95%CI 0.532-4.230; p = 0.443; [cardiac] reference), parkinsonism (OR 2.945, 95%CI 1.564-5.547; p = 0.001), intensive care unit stay (OR 1.675, 95%CI 1.354-2.072; p = 0.000), stroke history (OR 1.591, 95%CI 1.112-2.276; p = 0.011), use of hypnotics and sedatives (OR 1.307, 95%CI 1.072-1.594; p = 0.008), higher creatinine (OR 1.107, 95%CI 1.004-1.219; p = 0.040), lower hematocrit (OR 0.910, 95%CI 0.836-0.991; p = 0.031), older age (OR 1.053, 95%CI 1.037-1.069; p = 0.000), and lower body mass index (OR 0.967, 95%CI 0.942-0.993; p = 0.013). The use of analgesics (OR 0.644, 95%CI 0.467-0.887; p = 0.007) and antihistamines/antiallergics (OR 0.764, 95%CI 0.622-0.937; p = 0.010) were risk-reducing factors. Operation type with the highest odds ratio for POD was orthopedic surgery.Conclusions: Big data analytics could be applied to evaluate RFs in electronic medical records. We identified common RFs of POD, regardless of operation type. Fibrosis is the final pathological outcome of many chronic kidney diseases and is quite common. Thus, development of effective anti-fibrotic agents is urgently needed. Although histone deacetylases (HDACs) have been reported to be involved in renal fibrosis, current HDAC inhibitors are unsatisfactory anti-fibrosis drugs. Therefore, more potentially relevant anti-renal fibrosis HDAC inhibitors are needed. We initially found that non-cytotoxic concentrations of SB939 (pracinostat) had strong anti-fibrotic activity, drastically decreasing TGF-β1-induced alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expression in the NRK renal fibroblast cell line. Similar anti-fibrotic activity of SB939 on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) was confirmed using the HK-2 human renal proximal tubular epithelial cell line. SB939 inhibited Smad-independent TGF-β signaling involving the MAPK and PI3K/AKT pathways. To evaluate in vivo anti-fibrotic activity, we administered SB939 in a unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) model. SB939 treatment markedly inhibited the accumulation of α-SMA and tissue injury. Inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokines in the obstructed kidney were also significantly decreased by SB939 treatment. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to play important roles in several plant processes such as flowering, organ development and stress response. However, studies exploring the diversity and complexity of lncRNAs and their mechanism of action in plants are far fewer that those in animals. Here, we show that an intronic lncRNA in rice (Oryza sativa L.), RICE FLOWERING ASSOCIATED (RIFLA), is required for the inhibition of OsMADS56 expression. RIFLA is produced from the first intron of the OsMADS56 gene. Overexpression of RIFLA in rice repressed OsMADS56 expression but activated the expression of flowering inducers Hd3a and RFT1. Additionally, RIFLA -overexpressing transgenic rice plants flowered earlier than the wild type. Under normal conditions, the transcript level of the rice enhancer of zeste gene OsiEZ1 , a homolog of Arabidopsis histone H3K27-specific methyltransferase genes SWINGER (SWN) and CURLY LEAF (CLF), was as low as that of RIFLA , whereas the transcript level of OsMADS56 was relatively high. In the osiez1 mutant, OsMADS56 expression was upregulated, whereas RIFLA expression was downregulated. Additionally, RIFLA formed a complex with OsiEZ1. Aim: To provide therapeutic hypothermia (TH) to survivors after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), inter-hospital transfers (IHT) are frequently required. The safety of IHT remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the effect of TH on brain recovery after OHCA differs between IHT and direct arrival groups.Methods: We identified patients with OHCA of presumed cardiac aetiology who were resuscitated by emergency medical services and experienced return-of-spontaneous circulation in 27 hospitals between January and December 2014. The main exposure variables were TH and IHT. The primary endpoint was discharge with good neurological recovery. We compared outcomes between the TH and non-TH groups using multivariable logistic regression with an interaction term between TH and IHT, after adjusting for potential confounders.Results: Among 1616 patients, 576 patients were included in the final analyses. Neurologic recovery was better in the TH group (46.2%) than in the non-TH group (20.1%) (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.03 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24-3.33]). In the interaction model for the outcome of good neurological recovery, the aOR for TH was 2.82 (95% CI 1.59-5.01) in the direct transfer group vs. 0.76 (95% CI 0.29-2.01) in the IHT group. The measure of interaction on the multiplicative scale in this model was also statistically significant (OR 0.27 [95% CI 0.07-0.83]; p=0.02).Conclusion: IHT modified the effect of TH on neurological recovery for survivors of OHCA. The article presents the case of a 58-year-old man, who visited the outpatient clinic of department of neurology due to onset of a new onset, persistent, progressive, and severe headache. The patient felt pressure in the vertex area, and tightness in the shoulders, the back of the neck and occipital regions, but there were no other associated symptoms.

Summary: Purpose: Our aims were to identify (a) the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of cortical dyslamination with cytomegaly, including dysplastic and destructive lesions; (b) the relationship between MRI findings and pathologic characteristics; (c) the diagnostic role of functional neuroimaging studies in patients with these pathologies. Methods: The series consisted of 23 adult patients who had proven cortical dyslamination with cytomegaly. The abnormalities found on MRI were subdivided according to the patterns of involvement. They also were compared with the patients' pathologic characteristics. With visual qualitative analysis, [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose with positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), and ictal single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), observations were classified as localizing, lateralizing, nonlateralizing, false-localizing, and false-lateralizing. The standard for correct localization of neuroimages was defined to be the resected lobe. Results: Focal abnormalities were found in 14 cases by MRI. Six cases showed typical MRI findings of focal cortical dysplasia, with focal areas of cortical thickening with or without poor grey–white matter differentiation. Focal subcortical high signal intensities on T2-weighted images occurred in two cases. Six patients had the focal destructive pattern. Three of eight cases with normal MRI and four of eight cases with the nondestructive cortical dysplasia pattern had balloon cells. However, these were not found in six patients with the destructive MRI pattern. FDG-PET localized the pathologic lobe in 13 (65%) of 20 cases, and ictal SPECT achieved this in 11 (61.1%) of 18 cases. FDG-PET and ictal SPECT also correctly localized the pathologic lobe in four and two cases with normal MRI, respectively. Conclusions: Two distinct patterns of abnormal MRI were found in the pathology of cortical dyslamination with cytomegaly. These dysplastic and destructive patterns might reflect different pathogeneses, such as the time of insult. Topics discussed include performing of lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for screening of ruptured dermoid cyst, operating the patient with laminectomy and near total excision of the lesion, and headache was resolved within seven days after surgery and low back pain disappeared by a follow-up conducted after seven months.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the long-term mortality and recurrence rate of stroke in first-time stroke patients with symptomatic isolated middle cerebral artery disease (MCAD) under medical management.Methods: We identified 141 first ever stroke patients (mean age, 64.4 ± 12.5 years; 53% male) with symptomatic isolated MCAD. MCAD was defined as significant stenosis of more than 50% or occlusion of the MCA as revealed by MR angiography. The median follow-up was 27.7 months. We determined a cumulative rate of stroke recurrence and mortality by Kaplan-Meier survival analyses and sought predictors using the Cox proportional hazard model.Results: The cumulative composite outcome rate (stroke recurrence or any-cause death) was 14%, 19%, 22%, and 28% at years 1, 2, 3, and 5, respectively. The annual recurrence rate of stroke was 4.1%. The presence of diabetes mellitus was the only significant independent predictor of stroke recurrence or any cause of death in multivariate analyses of Cox proportional hazard model adjusted for any plausible potential confounding factors.Conclusions: We estimated the long-term prognosis of stroke patients with isolated symptomatic MCAD under current medical management in Korea.
