Abstract

A long‐term feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the effect substituting dietary fishmeal with a mixture of plant and animal protein sources on growth, body composition and economic efficiency of young Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). A fishmeal‐based diet was designated the control (Con). Three among the other six diets, respectively, had 30%, 40% and 50% of its fishmeal replaced by a mixture of plant and animal protein sources (designated as FS30, FS40 and FS50 respectively), while the remaining three diets were FS30, FS40 and FS50 diets supplemented with L‐lysine and L‐methionine (FS30AA, FS40AA and FS50AA respectively). Three replicated groups of fish (initial body weight, 86 ± 1.9 g) were fed one of the seven diets for 30 weeks. By the end of the feeding trials, the survival rate of all experimental groups was over 92%. The final mean weight, weight gain, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and condition factor of fish were not significantly affected by dietary treatments. Incidence cost of FS50 diet was significantly lower than Con diet. FS50 and FS40AA diets exhibited significantly higher profit index than the Con diet. FS40AA and FS50 diets were the best economically, followed by FS40, FS50AA, FS30, FS30AA and Con diets. These results suggest that the dietary fishmeal could be substituted with a mixture of plant and animal protein up to 50% in the diet without a reduction in growth and feed utilization of young Korean rockfish. Taking account of economic efficiency, the FS50 diet is recommendable for young Korean rockfish farming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of extruded pellet (EP) diets, as compared to a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, grown in commercial-scale aquaculture for 1 year. Four diets with duplication per diet were formulated for this experiment: two experimental EP diets (EP1 and EP2), one commercial EP diet (CEP), and a raw fish MP diet (MP). The MP diet consisted of 80% frozen horse mackerel and 20% commercial binder meal. Fish weighing () were distributed randomly to each aquarium as a group of 2,600 fish. Weight gain (WG) and feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish fed EP2 and MP were higher (P0.05) from those fed EP2 and MP. However, fish fed the MP diet had a higher survival rate than fish fed the other diets. Fish fed EP2 had higher serum, phospholipids and total protein levels, and lower levels of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and total cholesterol than fish fed MP (P0.05). These results strongly suggest that EP1 could be developed to replace MP for grow-out stage production of olive flounder without adverse effects on growth performance.

Abstract

Abstract: An 11‐wk feeding trial was conducted to evaluate three different protein hydrolysates as feed ingredients in high‐plant‐protein diets for juvenile olive flounder. Five experimental diets were fed to juvenile olive flounder to examine the effect of three different protein hydrolysates on growth performance, innate immunity, and disease resistance against bacterial infection. A basal fishmeal (FM)‐based diet was regarded as a high‐FM diet (HFM) and a diet containing soy protein concentrate (SPC) as a substitute for 50% FM protein was considered as a low‐FM diet (LFM). Three other diets contained three different sources of protein hydrolysates, including shrimp, tilapia, and krill hydrolysates (designated as SH, TH, and KH), replacing 12% of FM protein. All diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric. Triplicate groups of fish (15.1 ± 0.1 g) were handfed one of the diets to apparent satiation twice daily for 11 wk and subsequently challenged against Edwardsiella tarda. Growth performance and feed utilization of fish fed hydrolysate‐supplemented diets were significantly improved compared to those of fish fed the LFM diet. Dietary inclusion of the protein hydrolysates significantly enhanced apparent digestibility of dry matter and protein of the diets. In the proximal intestine, histological alterations were observed in the fish fed the LFM diet. The fish fed the hydrolysate diets showed significantly longer mucosal fold and enterocytes and greater number of goblet cells compared to fish fed the LFM diet. Respiratory burst activity was significantly higher in fish fed the TH and KH diets than fish fed the LFM diet. Significantly higher immunoglobulin levels were found in fish fed SH and KH diets compared to those of fish fed the LFM diet. Dietary inclusion of the protein hydrolysates in SPC‐based diets exhibited the highest lysozyme activity. Significantly higher superoxide activity was observed in groups of fish fed the KH diet. Fish offered the protein hydrolysates were more resistant to bacterial infection caused by E. tarda. The results of this study suggest that the tested protein hydrolysates can be used as potential dietary supplements to improve growth performance and health status of juvenile olive flounder when they were fed a LFM diet. Abstract

A 25-week feeding trial of two dietary protein (47 and ) and three dietary lipid level (7, 12 and ) factorial design with three replications were conducted to determine effects of dietary protein and lipid levels on growth, feed utilization and body composition of adult starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus), average initial weight 332 g, during the winter season. Survival of fish was not affected by either dietary protein or dietary lipid level. Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio improved with dietary protein and lipid levels except for those of fish fed the protein diet with lipid. The best growth and feed utilization were observed in the protein diet with lipid, but were not significantly different from those of fish fed the protein diet with lipid or the protein diets with lipid levels. Hepatosomatic and visceral somatic indexes were significantly influenced by dietary protein level, but not by dietary lipid level. None of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, or glycogen contents of dorsal muscle or liver in starry flounder except for crude lipid in dorsal muscle was significantly influenced by either dietary protein or dietary lipid level. Plasma cholesterol concentration was significantly influenced by both dietary protein and dietary lipid levels. The results of this study suggest that the diets containing protein with lipid or protein with lipid are optimal for growth and feed utilization of adult starry flounder under these experimental conditions.

This study investigated the effect of soybean-curd residues as an ingredient of the formulated diet for juvenile flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Three replicates of juvenile fish (averaging weight ) were fed one of four isonitrogenous diets containing soybean-curd residues for 7 weeks. Survival, hepatosomatic index and condition factor of the fish were not affected by dietary soybean-curd residues levels. Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the utilization of Sargassum meal in the diet on juvenile ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) reared in seawater. White fish meal and wheat flour were used as the dietary protein and carbohydrate sources in the control diet. Wheat flour in the control diet was replaced with and Sargassum meal. Three replicate groups of fish average weighing 4.0 g were fed one of three isonitrogenous and isocaloric (14.5 MJ /kg diet) diets for 7 weeks. Survival of all groups were above . Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were not significantly affected by dietary Sargassum meal levels (P>0.05). There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, crude ash and fatty acid compositions of whole-body fish among groups. It is concluded that Sargassum meal could be used as a dietary additive or alternative low-cost dietary ingredient up to for juvenile ayu reared in seawater.

Abstract

An 8-wk feeding trial was conducted to estimate the optimum dietary protein level and protein-to-energy (P/E) ratio in juvenile parrot fish, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Eight experimental diets were formulated with two energy levels and four protein levels for each energy level. Diets containing crude protein ( CP) at 35, 40, 45, and 50% had either 12.5 or 14.6 kJ/g of energy. Fish averaging 7.1 ± 0.06 g (mean ± SD) were fed one of the experimental diets for 8 wk. At the end of the feeding trial, weight gain ( WG) of fish fed 45 and 50% CP in the 12.5 kJ/g diet was significantly higher than fish fed the 35% CP diet ( P < 0.05). WG of the fish fed 45 and 50% CP in the 14.6 kJ/g diet was significantly higher than fish fed the 35 and 40% CP diets ( P < 0.05). Fish fed the 14.6 kJ/g diet had a higher WG compared with fish fed the 12.5 kJ/g diet at all CP levels. Feed efficiency ( FE) and specific growth rate ( SGR) showed a similar trend to the WG. WG, FE, and SGR improved with increasing dietary protein levels up to 45% and remained constant at 50% CP for both energy levels. However, protein efficiency ratio was negatively related to dietary protein levels. The results suggested that the optimum level of protein and the optimum P/E ratio for juvenile parrot fish should be 45% and 31.1 mg protein/ kJ, respectively, in a diet containing 14.6 kJ/g energy.
