According to the Eshelby conjecture, an ellipse or ellipsoid is the only shape that induces an interior uniform strain under a uniform far-field loading. We extend the Eshelby conjecture to domains of general shape for anti-plane elasticity. Specifically, we show that for each positive integer $N$, an inclusion induces an interior uniform strain under a polynomial loading of degree $N$ if and only if the exterior conformal map of the inclusion is a Laurent series of degree $N$. Furthermore, for the isotropic case, we characterize the shape of an inclusion by only using the first-degree polynomial loading and explicitly solve the interior potential of the inclusion in terms of the Grunsky coefficients., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures

We investigate anomalous localized resonance on the circular coated structure and cloaking related to it in the context of elasto-static systems. The structure consists of the circular core with constant Lam\'e parameters and the circular shell of negative Lam\'e parameters proportional to those of the core. We show that the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Poincar\'e operator corresponding to the structure converges to certain non-zero numbers determined by Lam\'e parameters and derive precise asymptotics of the convergence. We then show with estimates that cloaking by anomalous localized resonance takes place if and only if the dipole type source lies inside critical radii determined by the radii of the core and the shell., Comment: 19 pages

We first investigate spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincar\'e (NP) operator for the Lam\'e system of elasto-statics. We show that the elasto-static NP operator can be symmetrized in the same way as that for Laplace operator. We then show that even if elasto-static NP operator is not compact even on smooth domains, its spectrum consists of eigenvalues which accumulates to two numbers determined by Lam\'e constants. We then derive explicitly eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on disks and ellipses. We then investigate resonance occurring at eigenvalues and anomalous localized resonance at accumulation points of eigenvalues. We show on ellipses that cloaking by anomalous localized resonance takes place at accumulation points of eigenvalues., Comment: 33 pages

We consider well-posedness of the boundary value problem in presence of an inclusion with complex conductivity $k$. We first consider the transmission problem in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and characterize solvability of the problem in terms of the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincar\'e operator. We then deal with the boundary value problem and show that the solution is bounded in its $H^1$-norm uniformly in $k$ as long as $k$ is at some distance from a closed interval in the negative real axis. We then show with an estimate that the solution depends on $k$ in its $H^1$-norm Lipschitz continuously. We finally show that the boundary perturbation formula in presence of a diametrically small inclusion is valid uniformly in $k$ away from the closed interval mentioned before. The results for the single inclusion case are extended to the case when there are multiple inclusions with different complex conductivities: We first obtain a complete characterization of solvability when inclusions consist of two disjoint disks and then prove solvability and uniform estimates when imaginary parts of conductivities have the same signs. The results are obtained using the spectral property of the associated Neumann-Poincar\'e operator and the spectral resolution.

The size estimation problem in electrical impedance tomography is considered when the conductivity is a complex number and the body is two-dimensional. Upper and lower bounds on the volume fraction of the unknown inclusion embedded in the body are derived in terms of two pairs of voltage and current data measured on the boundary of the body. These bounds are derived using the translation method. We also provide numerical examples to show that these bounds are quite tight and stable under measurement noise., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

If a core of dielectric material is coated by a plasmonic structure of negative dielectric material with non-zero loss parameter, then anomalous localized resonance may occur as the loss parameter tends to zero and the source outside the structure can be cloaked. It has been proved that the cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR) takes place for structures of concentric disks and the critical radius inside which the sources are cloaked has been computed. In this paper, it is proved that CALR takes place for structures of confocal ellipses and the critical elliptic radii are computed. The method of this paper uses the spectral analysis of the Neumann-Poincar\'e type operator associated with two interfaces (the boundaries of the core and the shell).

We consider the Lam\'e system of linear elasticity when the inclusion has the extreme elastic constants. We show that the solutions to the Lam\'e system converge in appropriate $H^1$-norms when the shear modulus tends to infinity (the other modulus, the compressional modulus is fixed), and when the bulk modulus and the shear modulus tend to zero. Using this result, we show that the asymptotic expansion of the displacement vector in the presence of small inclusion is uniform with respect to Lam\'e parameters., Comment: 20 pages

We prove an optimal stability estimate for Electrical Impedance Tomography with local data, in the case when the conductivity is precisely known on a neighborhood of the boundary. The main novelty here is that we provide a rather general method which enables to obtain the H\"older dependence of a global Dirichlet to Neumann map from a local one on a larger domain when, in the layer between the two boundaries, the coefficient is known., Comment: 12 pages

Li-Vogelius and Li-Nirenberg gave a gradient estimate for solutions of strongly elliptic equations and systems of divergence forms with piecewise smooth coefficients, respectively. The discontinuities of the coefficients are assumed to be given by manifolds of codimension 1, which we called them manifolds of discontinuities. Their gradient estimate is independent of the distances between manifolds of discontinuities. In this paper, we gave a parabolic version of their results. That is, we gave a gradient estimate for parabolic equations of divergence forms with piecewise smooth coefficients. The coefficients are assumed to be independent of time and their discontinuities are likewise the previous elliptic equations. As an application of this estimate, we also gave a pointwise gradient estimate for the fundamental solution of a parabolic operator with piecewise smooth coefficients. The both gradient estimates are independent of the distances between manifolds of discontinuities., Comment: 33 pages

We will show that the same type of estimates known for the fundamental solutions for scalar parabolic equations with smooth enough coefficients hold for the first order derivatives of fundamental solution with respect to space variables of scalar parabolic equations of divergence form with discontinuous coefficients. The estimate is very important for many applications. For example, it is important for the inverse problem identifying inclusions inside a heat conductive medium from boundary measurements.
