28. Processes of social change in the works of Badiou and Laclau

Abstract

No theory of social change can circumvent the task of specifying the process that transforms the existent order into a different order, and determining that which accounts for the difference between those two orders. This thesis examines whether the theories of social change found in the works of Alain Badiou and Ernesto Laclau succeed in fulfilling this task. Badiou contends that a political process transforms the situation in which it unfolds in so far as what it produces is a ‘truth’. Certain implications of the set-theoretical ontological discourse through which Badiou conceptualizes truths, however, prevents an unambiguous appraisal of their socially transformative character. Although Badiou stipulates that the transformative potential of a truth lies in its ‘generic’ universality, this universality becomes indistinguishable from particularity when its transformative effects are limited to a situation—but it is precisely the interplay between situations, in the plural, that is not adequately reflected in set-theoretical ontology. Whilst Laclau’s theory of hegemony can be interpreted as providing an account of this interplay between pluralities of situations, it has its own shortcoming: the transition between different social orders cannot be thought under hegemony theory as anything other than a transition wherein the to-come is conditioned by the present to an extent that is theoretically underdetermined, resulting in the blurring of the distinction between social transformation and social reproduction. The final part of this thesis explores the possibility of bringing together the Laclauian notion of the ‘simplification’ of the social space through hegemonic articulation and Badiou’s theorization of truth procedure, in an attempt to conceive the particular kind of situation in which a political process would potentially have far-reaching socially transformative consequences.

Abstract

Global climate crises are the most significant challenges to be solved these days. As one of the technological endeavors to tackle the issue, radiative cooling is amongst the most attractive approaches for sustainable heat energy regulation, which involves maximizing solar heat reflection and thermal heat emission. These green technologies inevitably require architectural applicability, considering that building facades take a large proportion of the heat‐radiating surfaces. For mass‐production suitability and durability, radiative coolers (RCs) fabricated in a fully ceramic context are recently suggested, featuring scalable, thermally insulative, and non‐shrinking advantages. However, the visual effects are also imperative for architectural instances but are seldom accounted for. In this context, this article suggests the enhanced color‐preserving radiative cooling (ECRC) structure for practical architectural applications of glass‐infiltrated ceramic RCs. By simply blending ceramic pigment into the uppermost porous alumina layer, the ECRC structure can maintain the physical, and thermal features of all‐ceramic RC, while exhibiting color by visible reflectance adjustment. ECRCs exhibit an additional cooling performance of up to ≈17.3 °C depending on their color, compared to their conventional counterparts. With additional chromatic features, ECRC can further enhance the availability of radiative cooling technology for practically realizing the energy‐saving structures in real‐world architectural circumstances. Abstract

This paper develops robust testing procedures for nonparametric kernel methods in the presence of temporal dependence of unknown forms. Based on the fixed-bandwidth asymptotic variance and the pre-asymptotic variance, we propose a heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation robust (HAR) variance estimator that achieves double robustness --- it is asymptotically valid regardless of whether the temporal dependence is present or not, and whether the kernel smoothing bandwidth is held constant or allowed to decay with the sample size. Using the HAR variance estimator, we construct the studentized test statistic and examine its asymptotic properties under both the fixed-smoothing and increasing-smoothing asymptotics. The fixed-smoothing approximation and the associated convenient t-approximation achieve extra robustness --- it is asymptotically valid regardless of whether the truncation lag parameter governing the covariance weighting grows at the same rate as or a slower rate than the sample size. Finally, we suggest a simulation-based calibration approach to choose smoothing parameters that optimize testing oriented criteria. Simulation shows that the proposed procedures work very well in finite samples.
