8. A Comprehensive Technoeconomic and Environmental Evaluation of a Hybrid Renewable Energy System for a Smart Farm in South Korea

Abstract

The farming sector like any other industry needs to be decarbonized. Hence, it is essential to meet the energy demands of the farms by adopting energy systems with a low-carbon footprint. Depending on the weather conditions, heating or cooling is needed. Within this context, this study presents a new hybrid renewable decentralized energy system that is designed to satisfy the requirements for heating, cooling, and electricity of a smart farm in South Korea. The under-investigation energy system comprises solar PV arrays, heat pumps, thermal energy storage tanks, and a wood pellet boiler. This study is the first to conduct an inclusive techno-enviroeconomic assessment of such a hybrid energy system by utilizing actual meteorological data on an hourly basis. This enables the model to be dynamic and facilitate accurate and reliable assessments. The modelling efforts have been performed in Aspen Plus and MATLAB to investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of the system. The investigation shows that the proposed system has achieved a daily average temperature of around 23.9°C inside the farm throughout the year with a standard deviation of 2.16°C. For the economic assessment, the levelized cost of energy has been selected as the main economic indicator, and this has been estimated at $0.218/kWh. It is found that the PV panels and the biomass boiler dominate the capital expenditures, and the biomass feedstock is the major contributor to the operating expenditures. Further, the proposed energy system reduces CO2 emissions, by up to 88.94%, when compared to conventional fossil-based energy systems. The outcomes of this study represent a holistic evaluation for such a low-carbon hybrid energy system when applied to greenhouses in Korea and in similar locations.

9. 3D Reconstruction of Celadon from a 2D Image: Application to Path Tracing and VR.

Abstract

We present a straightforward approach for reconstructing 3D celadon models from a single 2D image. The celadon is a historical example of the surface of revolution. Our approach uses a surface of revolution technique to generate the basic shape of the celadon and then applies texture mapping to create a realistic appearance. The process involves detecting the contour and corners of the celadon image, determining an axis of revolution, generating a profile curve, and finally constructing a 3D celadon model. Additionally, we create models as triangular meshes at multiple resolutions, employing a B-spline curve as the profile curve. It enhances the adaptability of the models for various purposes. We render various scenes using a path tracer to assess the suitability of the generated 3D celadon models and generate a VR celadon museum with the models. Overall, our approach offers a simple and efficient solution for reconstructing a 3D celadon model, generating VR content, and demonstrating extensive applicability across numerous disciplines. Abstract

A dynamic simulation of a modern ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (USC-CFB) boiler system was performed using a physics-based model, where the boiler system was composed of an integrated system of heat exchanger (HEX) blocks. In each of the discretized elements of the HEX blocks, supercritical steam flow interacted with the solid–gas flow via heat transfer, and conservation laws, and physical phenomena of the CFB, and the supercritical steam flow was modeled to obtain the flow properties of each material side. By utilizing this model, the dynamic behavior of the main steam temperature, which was selected as the representative performance parameter for achieving safe and fast load changes, was simulated in response to changes applied to the main operating parameters such as the feedwater and fuel flow rates. The dynamic characteristics of the USC-CFB boiler were demonstrated by presenting the temperature responses of the steam and the circulating solid–gas after a step change in the feedwater and fuel flow rates. In the case of a load change, the dynamic response of the steam temperature was quantitatively presented by showing the transient overshoot and undershoot behavior, depending on the selection of the ramp speed when changing the feedwater and fuel flow rates. The steam temperature was also shown to be controlled by manipulating the inlet solid mass flow rate into the final superheater section of the external HEX. The comprehensive set of plant performance data that was generated from the model simulation can be utilized in setting up the operation strategies and/or in determining the control parameters for achieving stable steam temperature behavior during a load change.
