1. Realization of 5 h/e^2 with graphene quantum Hall resistance array

Abstract

We report on realization of 10 quantum Hall devices in series fabricated using epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide. Precision measurements with a resistance bridge indicates that the quantized Hall resistance across an array at filling factor 2 is equivalent to 5 h/e^2 within the measurement uncertainty of approximately 4 10-8. A quantum-Hall phase diagram for the array shows that a metrological quantization of 5 h/e^2 can be achieved at the magnetic field of 6 T and temperature of 4 K. This experiment demonstrates the possibility of timely unchangeable resistance reference in various ranges in relaxed experimental conditions.

Abstract

Accurate measurement of the electric current requires a stable and calculable resistor for an ideal current to voltage conversion. However, the temporal resistance drift of a physical resistor is unavoidable, unlike the quantum Hall resistance directly linked to the Planck constant h and the elementary charge e. Lack of an invariant high resistance leads to a challenge in making small current measurements below 1 muA with an uncertainty better than one part in 106. In this work, we demonstrate a current to voltage conversion in the range from a few nano amps to one microamp with an invariant quantized Hall array resistance. The converted voltage is directly compared with the Josephson voltage reference in the framework of Ohm's law. Markedly distinct from the classical conversion, which relies on an artifact resistance reference, this current-to-voltage conversion does not demand timely resistance calibrations. It improves the precision of current measurement down to 8 10 -8 at 1 muA.

5. Asymmetric Electron-Hole Decoherence in Ion-Gated Epitaxial Graphene

Abstract

We report on asymmetric electron-hole decoherence in epitaxial graphene gated by an ionic liquid. The observed negative magnetoresistance near zero magnetic field for different gate voltages, analyzed in the framework of weak localization, gives rise to distinct electron-hole decoherence. The hole decoherence rate increases prominently with decreasing negative gate voltage while the electron decoherence rate does not exhibit any substantial gate dependence. Quantitatively, the hole decoherence rate is as large as the electron decoherence rate by a factor of two. We discuss possible microscopic origins including spin-exchange scattering consistent with our experimental observations.

18. Realization of Inductance Scale Using Digital Bridges at Low Frequencies

Abstract

This article describes a traceability chain for the inductance scale from the dc quantum Hall resistance using a multipurpose digital impedance bridge. In this study, the digital bridge was employed in various inductance measurements against either ac resistance standards or other inductance standards in the wide range from $100~\mu $ H to 10 H. An inductance standard of 100 mH was calibrated at 1 kHz using the digital bridge in a fully digital (FD) mode by a direct comparison against the ac resistance standard of 1 k $\Omega $ . The measurement results were in good agreements with the reference value on the level of $10^{-6}$ at the best. From the calibrated 100 mH standard inductor, the inductance scale was realized by 10:1 comparisons from $100~\mu $ H to 10 H using the bridge in a digitally assisted (DA) mode. In a similar manner, the 10 mH inductance was calibrated against the 1 k $\Omega $ resistance at a higher frequency of 10 kHz, then scaled down to $100~\mu $ H. During the extensive measurements, the digital bridge was studied for various ways to improve the inductance measurement accuracy, such as the phase correction of the bridge.

Abstract

Benign cartilaginous tumors, known as chondrogenic tumors, show cartilage components in the microscopic diagnosis. We present two clinical cases with cartilaginous tumors of the toes showing distinctive clinical manifestations. Two juvenile patients visited our outpatient clinic due to tumors with toenail deformities. A 10-year-old girl presented with a palpable mass with a nail deformity on the left third toe. The initial pathology report was soft tissue chondroma until complete resection. Another 15-year-old male patient visited the dermatology department with a toenail deformity and underwent a punch biopsy. The pathology report was fibrosis with myxoid degeneration. Excisional biopsies were performed for both patients. In the operative field, we observed exophytic tumors connected to the distal phalangeal bones. The final pathology reports were subungual osteochondroma on both patients. The specimen exhibited mature bone trabeculae with a focal cartilaginous cap. Benign cartilaginous tumors have a slow, progressive course and do not show significant symptoms. However, tumors in subungual areas are accompanied by toenail deformities and they can cause pain. Their clinical characteristics lead to a delayed diagnosis. Surgeons can be confused between soft tissue and chondrogenic tumors.
